What Up, Doe! The surging Detroit Tigers opened up their homestand at Comerica Park tonight with an unbelievable, cardiac-cat 4-3 comeback victory over the Kansas City Royals.
The Comeback Cats Strike Again
For six innings, it looked like it was going to be one of those frustrating summer nights at Comerica Park. Right-hander Randy Dobnak had our bats looking completely off-balance with a "funky" mix of sinkers and sweepers, keeping us scoreless. When Isaac Collins launched a two-run homer off Tigers starter Troy Melton in the top of the sixth, you could feel the collective groan through the stadium.
But this team has won 14 of its last 19 games for a reason—they simply do not quit!
The Outman Flip and Dingler's Clutch Hit
The real fireworks started in the bottom of the seventh. Dillon Dingler and Kerry Carpenter kickstarted the inning with consecutive singles. With two outs and a 2-2 count, center fielder James Outman turned on a John Schreiber fastball and crushed a beautiful, no-doubt three-run shot over the right-field wall to flip the script and give us a 3-2 lead.
The Royals didn't go away quietly, tying it back up at 3-3 in the eighth against Drew Anderson. However, the bottom of the eighth belonged to our young core. Pinch-hitter Hao-Yu Lee singled up the middle, and with two outs, our breakout catcher Dillon Dingler absolutely laced a clutch, tie-breaking double down the left-field line off Steven Cruz to drive Lee home.
Turning Two to Seal the Deal
Manager A.J. Hinch admitted after the game that he didn't originally want to use closer Kyle Finnegan for a third time in four days, but "we had earned the right to go for it." Finnegan entered the ninth with two on and one out in a high-stress jam. He induced a beautiful, game-ending double play from Salvador Perez—grounding out to Spencer Torkelson, who threw to shortstop, and back to Finnegan covering first—to lock down his second save.
The Big Picture: Buy, Buy, Buy?
With the August 3 trade deadline looming, this stretch of winning baseball is completely changing the front office narrative. Instead of trading away our Cy Young ace Tarik Skubal, this team is playing like they want to buy and force themselves right into the wild card conversation. If Outman and Dingler keep delivering in the clutch like this, August is going to be electric in downtown Detroit.
