What a night at Comerica Park! A sold-out crowd of 40,638 packed the stands, and the energy was absolutely electric from the first pitch to the final out. The Tigers defeated the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on a perfect summer evening for a ballgame in Detroit. The weather was amazing and so was the pitching performance from our ace Tarik Skubal.
Skubal’s Masterpiece Amid Trade Deadline Noise
If this was Tarik Skubal’s final home start in a Detroit uniform, he gave us a performance we will never forget. Despite heavy trade rumors ahead of the August 3 deadline, Skubal blocked out the noise and completely mowed down the Royals lineup.

Every time Kansas City threatened, Skubal found another gear. In the third inning, the Royals put runners on second and third with one out. Skubal dialed it up and struck out Carter Jensen and Lane Thomas back-to-back to escape unscathed. When he walked off the mound in the eighth inning, the entire stadium stood on its feet to give him a massive, extended ovation. He deserved every bit of it!
Strike First, Strike Fast
All of the Tigers' offense came right away in the bottom of the first inning against Royals opener Beck Way. Colt Keith got things started by scoring on a deep sacrifice fly from Riley Greene—which nearly cleared the wall for a grand slam if not for a spectacular web gem catch by left fielder Isaac Collins.
Shortly after, Hao-Yu Lee ripped a sharp RBI single to center field to bring home Gleyber Torres, pushing the lead to 2-0.
The Royals managed to scratch a run back in the fourth inning when Nick Loftin hit an RBI double off Skubal, but that was all the pitching staff would allow.
Slamming the Door
After Brenan Hanifee got the final two outs of the eighth, veteran closer Kenley Jansen took the mound for the ninth. Jansen made quick work of the Royals, forcing a pop-out to Hao-Yu Lee on the right side of the infield to seal the 2-1 victory and secure his 12th save of the year.
With this win, the Tigers improved to 13-5 in the month of July and 28-16 since June 1. We are officially playing some of the best baseball in the league right now. This team is now just four games under .500 (50-54) for the first time since mid-May.
Whether the front office decides to trade Skubal or ride this wave into August, one thing is certain: this grit-and-grind culture under A.J. Hinch is a real roller coaster ride for Detroit Tigers fans.
