BULLPEN HEARTBREAK AT COMERICA PARK

I am absolutely sick to my stomach writing about today's game at Comerica Park. The Detroit Tigers dropped a brutal 5-4 decision to the Kansas City Royals. For the second straight afternoon, our makeshift bullpen completely fell apart late and flushed a gritty, hard-fought comeback down the drain. Instead of securing a massive series win over a division opponent, we settle for a disappointing 2-2 series split.

The loss drops our record to 50-56 more than midway through the 2026 campaign. With the August 3 trade deadline looming in exactly one week, these are the exact types of gut-wrenching losses that make the front office hesitate to buy—especially as they weigh whether to shop or hold onto our ace, Tarik Skubal.

A Sputtering Start for Framber

Let’s be honest: Framber Valdez didn't have his best stuff out of the gate. On the very first pitch of the game, Lane Thomas launched a solo shot over the right-field wall to make it 1-0. A rough fielding error by Hao-Yu Lee later in the frame gifted the Royals a second run. By the time Luke Maile smacked an RBI double in the fourth, the Tigers were staring down a 3-0 deficit. Valdez battled to limit the damage through 5.0 innings, giving up 3 runs (2 earned), but our offense looked entirely lifeless against Kansas City's Luinder Avila.

The Magical Fifth-Inning Rally

Just when I was ready to throw my remote at the television, the bats finally woke up in the bottom of the fifth. We strung together three straight hits to load the bases, and the young guys showed exactly why we love this core.

Colt Keith and Hao-Yu Lee scampered home on a soft ball up the middle by Riley Greene, aided by an Andrew Velazquez fielding error to pull us within one. Moments later, our All-Star catcher Dillon Dingler delivered the biggest blow of the day, driving a sharp two-run single past Matt Strahm’s head to cap off a four-run explosion and give us a 4-3 lead. Comerica Park was absolutely rocking!

The Bullpen Meltdown

Ty Madden came out of the bullpen and looked fantastic, throwing 1.2 innings of hitless ball to bridge the gap. But leaving the bases loaded without adding any insurance runs in the later frames ultimately left us playing with fire.

In the top of the eighth, A.J. Hinch turned to lefty Drew Sommers. With two outs and a runner on, Royals pinch-hitter Michael Massey stepped to the plate and absolutely crushed a 399-foot, two-run blast into the right-field seats. Just like that, the lead evaporated, and a 4-3 advantage flipped into a miserable 5-4 deficit.

Heartbreak in the Ninth

We didn't go down without a fight. In the bottom of the ninth, Hao-Yu Lee and Colt Keith reached safely to put runners on first and second with nobody out against Steven Cruz. The stage was set for a walk-off celebration. Instead, McGonigle flew out, Gleyber Torres struck out swinging, and Steven Cruz blew a nasty cutter right past Riley Greene for a strike out to end the ballgame.

Looking Ahead

This one hurts deeply, but there's no time to hang our heads. We open up a crucial three-game home stand on Monday night against the Baltimore Orioles. Keider Montero (7-5, 3.14 ERA) takes the mound for us. Let's put this series behind us, get out to Comerica Park, and back our boys!

ROYALS WHIP TIGERS

The Kansas City Royals defeated the Detroit 3-2 today snapping Detroit's three-game winning streak in a heartbreaking late-inning bullpen collapse at Comerica Park whipping the Tigers at home.

Another Bullpen Heartbreak at Comerica

This one stings for Tigers fans. We had the momentum, a three-game win streak, and a stellar performance on the mound from Casey Mize. Mize was absolutely locked in, carving up the Royals for six innings while allowing just three hits and a single run. He left the game with a 2-1 lead, perfectly positioned to log a well-deserved win.

Then the seventh inning arrived, and things unraveled. Reliever Kyle Finnegan stepped onto the mound and immediately served up a 401-foot lead-off blast to Salvador Perez. Not only did it tie the game 2-2, but we also had to watch Perez break George Brett’s 40-year-old franchise record with his 318th career home run on our own turf.

The fatal blow came in the top of the ninth. Jacob Waguespack surrendered a solo shot to Nick Loftin, putting the Royals ahead 3-2.

The Hao-Yu Lee Show

If there is one massive silver lining to take away from July 25, it is Hao-Yu Lee. The young second baseman single-handedly carried the Tigers' offense.2nd Inning: Lee ripped an RBI double to right field, scoring Riley Greene to tie the game 1-1.4th Inning: Lee absolutely crushed a 402-foot solo home run to left field off Michael Wacha, giving Detroit the temporary 2-1 lead.

With those two hits, Lee extended his career-best hitting streak to 10 games. He accounts for all of our offense right now, and he is quickly turning into appointment television.

Twisted Knives in the Ninth

The bottom of the ninth gave us a massive surge of hope, only to rip it away. Riley Greene led off the frame with a sharp single. Naturally, Royals manager Matt Quatraro pulled the ultimate script-writer move and brought in former Tigers closer Alex Lange to shut us down. Lange struck out Lee, but Zach McKinstry followed up with a clutch single to right, putting runners on the corners with only one out. Comerica Park was ready to explode. 

Instead, Lange struck out Matt Vierling. Then, Spencer Torkelson stepped up to pinch-hit, only to pop out harmlessly to the catcher to end the ballgame. Watching a former Tiger celebrate a save against us at home is a tough pill to swallow.

The Tigers drop to 50-55 on the season. We flush this one down the toilet and look ahead to Sunday’s series finale, where Framber Valdez takes the mound to help us secure the series victory.

TIGERS TAKE A BITE OUT OF THE ROYALS

What a night at Comerica Park! A sold-out crowd of 40,638 packed the stands, and the energy was absolutely electric from the first pitch to the final out. The Tigers defeated the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on a perfect summer evening for a ballgame in Detroit. The weather was amazing and so was the pitching performance from our ace Tarik Skubal.

Skubal’s Masterpiece Amid Trade Deadline Noise

If this was Tarik Skubal’s final home start in a Detroit uniform, he gave us a performance we will never forget. Despite heavy trade rumors ahead of the August 3 deadline, Skubal blocked out the noise and completely mowed down the Royals lineup.

Every time Kansas City threatened, Skubal found another gear. In the third inning, the Royals put runners on second and third with one out. Skubal dialed it up and struck out Carter Jensen and Lane Thomas back-to-back to escape unscathed. When he walked off the mound in the eighth inning, the entire stadium stood on its feet to give him a massive, extended ovation. He deserved every bit of it!

Strike First, Strike Fast

All of the Tigers' offense came right away in the bottom of the first inning against Royals opener Beck Way. Colt Keith got things started by scoring on a deep sacrifice fly from Riley Greene—which nearly cleared the wall for a grand slam if not for a spectacular web gem catch by left fielder Isaac Collins.

Shortly after, Hao-Yu Lee ripped a sharp RBI single to center field to bring home Gleyber Torres, pushing the lead to 2-0.

The Royals managed to scratch a run back in the fourth inning when Nick Loftin hit an RBI double off Skubal, but that was all the pitching staff would allow.

Slamming the Door

After Brenan Hanifee got the final two outs of the eighth, veteran closer Kenley Jansen took the mound for the ninth. Jansen made quick work of the Royals, forcing a pop-out to Hao-Yu Lee on the right side of the infield to seal the 2-1 victory and secure his 12th save of the year.

The Big Picture: Keep Pushing

With this win, the Tigers improved to 13-5 in the month of July and 28-16 since June 1. We are officially playing some of the best baseball in the league right now. This team is now just four games under .500 (50-54) for the first time since mid-May.

Whether the front office decides to trade Skubal or ride this wave into August, one thing is certain: this grit-and-grind culture under A.J. Hinch is a real roller coaster ride for Detroit Tigers fans.
