The Secret to a Perfect Camp Fire

One of the best parts of a camping trip is spending an evening outdoors around a fire roasting hot dogs, making s'mores and sharing ghost stories.  So how disappointing would it be not to be able to get a fire started while you are camping?  Getting a good fire burning can often be more difficult than people think it will be and I've witnesses quite a few struggles to get wood set ablaze while camping.  So from my own lessons learned, here is the secret to a perfect camp fire:

TINDER

Spark your fire with tinder that will get hot quickly but not burn out too fast.  Come prepared with your own tinder that is dependable to get your fire burning.  We make our own special "fire starters" that are sure to get things burning which we bring along on all our family camping trips. Take a cardboard egg carton and fill it with dryer lint.  Sprinkle candle wax over the top which allows the egg cartoon and lint to get really hot but prevents them from burning out too quickly so that the tinder keeps your kindling ablaze.

KINDLING

Create a nest around your tender of small twigs and branches.  This expands the heat and flames from your tender long enough to get your fuel logs burning. Otherwise logs might smother the flame from the tinder.  Don't include leaves, grass, weeds or vines in your kindling because that will generate more smoke than flame.

FUEL LOGS

Place logs around your tinder and kindling in the form of a teepee.  This is what keeps your fire hot and burning once you get it going.  Leave an opening on one side of the teepee facing the direction in which the wind is blowing.  This will ensure the fire is getting enough air to help fan the flames across the kindling and fuel logs.  The teepee structure will eventually fall as the wood burns.  Once this happens just throw more logs onto the fire to keep it going.

There you have it -- the secret to a perfect camp fire!  I hope these tips help ensure you are never left in the cold when it comes to starting a fire on a family camp trip vacation.

H.R. Pufnstuf Returns To Television

It's been a long time but I still can remember watching some of the popular kids programs of my youth like Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Dressup, The Friendly Giant, and of course H.R. Pufnstuf.  I really liked H.R. Pufnstuf as a youngster because it featured life-sized puppets in fantasy adventures on a live-action television show which really brought characters like Cling and Clang, Dr. Blinky, the friendly dragon H.R. Pufnstuf and the villainous Withchiepoo to life.   This gang's high jinks on Living Island made for a cutting edge show at the time and have made the television series a cult classic. I have fond memories of the show but don't recall seeing much about H.R. Pufnstuf and its cast of characters since I was about 6 or 7 years old so when I noticed Nickelodeon was bringing its characters back to television that news caught my attention.

Sid and Marty Krofft who in addition to creating H.R. Pufnstuf are known for other popular 1970s era television shows such as the Donnie & Marie variety show, Land of the Lost, Sigmund & The Sea Monsters, Doctor Shrinker and Wonderbug have recently embarked on a new venture with Nickelodeon producing a new live-action preschool series called Mutt & Stuff.  Set in a unique school for dogs, Mutt and Stuff stars Calvin Millan and his dad Cesar (the original star of Dog Whisperer), interacting with a cast of both real dogs and puppets.  Based upon the popularity of the new series this year, Nickelodeon is expanding its first season by an additional 20 episodes.  In celebration of this expanded season, one of the new episodes will pay tribute to Sid and Marty Kroft's beloved characters from H.R. Pufenstuff bringing them back for their first new television show appearance since the 1980s.  Featuring H.R. Pufnstuf, Cling and Clang, Freddy the Flute, and the Rescue Racer, H.R. PUFNSTUF COMES TO MUTT & STUFF is currently being filmed and will have a premiere date in early 2016.

In "H.R. Pufnstuf Comes to Mutt & Stuff," Stuff, the over-the-top canine companion of Calvin, is paid a special visit at the canine school by his favorite uncle H.R. Pufnstuf.  When H.R. Pufnstuf arrives with his friends from Living Island, Stuff goes overboard in an attempt to impress him and make sure everything is perfect.  This episode promises to be a nostalgic moment for fans of the original H.R. Pufnstuff and an opportunity to introduce these characters to a new generation of both parents and children who may not be familiar with this cast of characters because of their long hiatus from television.

"H.R. Pufnstuf was the first TV show my brother and I created, so it has always held a special place in our hearts," said Marty Krofft in a press release provided to A Geek Daddy.  "Our fans constantly ask us to bring pack Pufnstuf and we feel the vibrant world of Mutt & Stuff is the perfect setting to revitalize these colorful characters and build excitement for new fans."

"H.R. Pufnstuf's wildly imaginative characters made an indelible impression on an entire generation, and now preschoolers and parents will see the two fantasy worlds of Sid and Marty Kroft come together on Mutt & Stuff through the same creative storytelling that defines both series," noted Russell Hicks, President, Content Development and Production, Nickelodeon Group.

"It has been an amazing experience to be part of Mutt & Stuff with my son Calvin," added Cesar Millan.  "The show is an amazing platform to educate kids on the responsibilities of being a dog owner and we are excited to be bringing it back for another 20 episodes."

Mutt & Stuff follows Calvin Millan and his best friend Stuff, a larger-than-life dog with the personality to match, as they take preschoolers inside the doors of Mutt & Stuff, a school for dogs, to explore the daily lives of these canine companions.  Each episode features incredible tricks, training lessons and high-spirited humor.  With the help of 15 playful puppies and charismatic puppets, Calvin educates preschoolers on how to train and guide their dogs, as well as showcase the friendship and loyalty that puppies can provide.  The series has a social-emotional curriculum that helps preschoolers identify and manage emotions, build interpersonal awareness and develop social skills.  Mutt & Stuff also carries a message of pet adoption and responsible pet care based upon Cesar Millan's philosophies.

If you want to check out re-runs  H.R. Pufnstuff they are broadcast on the Me-TV television network and streamed at metv.com.  We've also included an episode of the show you can watch below:

Treat Yourself To Some Spooky Fun Tricks On Family & Friends This Halloween

** The reviewer has been compensated in the form of a Best Buy Gift Card and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free **

Halloween has always been one of my favorite times of the year with its costume parties, haunted houses, ghost stories and trick or treating.  One of the funnest parts of the season though has to be pulling pranks on people to see if you can scare them.  BEST BUY's Geek Squad has come up with some great ideas on how you can use recent advances in technology to take your Halloween pranks to the next level.  With some help from BEST BUY, you can really treat yourself to some fun with awesome spooky tricks on your friends and family.

Our family walks past this mantle probably a hundred times per day with a mirror hanging over it and built-in cabinets underneath with a television and audio-video equipment and I figured they wouldn't be pay much attention if I tried to pull off the Best Buy Geek Squad's "Mirror Mirror" prank.  So I followed the directions in the video below by swapping out the mirror over our living room mantle with the flat screen television I have stashed in my basement workout area while my wife and kids were out doing some errands.  I grabbed an old Halloween monster mask and recorded myself jumping as if I would be coming out of the mirror yelling BOO!!!  Then I edited the video on my PC and burned it to a DVD.  I connected the DVD to the television which was hidden by a sheet of two-way mirror film and hoped my family wouldn't notice the extra cords dangling about.  Since we already has some A/V cords wrapped around some shelves and the mantle they really did blend in unless you were really paying attention.

When my wife and kids arrived home they went upstairs to put some things away and I grabbed the DVD and TV remote controls to get ready for my prank!  I hid by the stairway entrance to our living room and as I heard steps coming down I flipped on the video just as the person approached then jumped out with my camera to record the moment.  I snapped a picture just as my son began to howl out a cry of fright!  Ooops! thought it was going to be my wife walking into the room first and I felt bad about scaring my son.  He started laughing though once he realized it was a prank and started begging that we do it on my wife and daughter too.  I let him work the remote controls when we heard them walking down the stairs.  Oh the family fun you can have at Halloween!

While scaring friends and family at Halloween can be a real treat - even more fun is being able to show your "victims" how ridiculous they looked at the moment you've terrified them.  Taking a photo can be a nice present to preserve their memory of this Halloween prank or if you are more devilish  it can be a way to blackmail someone who wants to avoid having their embarrassing freaked out face show up all over social media.  BEST BUY has some great tips on how to really do a great job of recording your prank so there are images to share.

So are there any Halloween pranks you've wanted to do but haven't had the know how to pull them off.  BEST BUY can supply technology now that makes pranks that my have seemed beyond the realm of possibility in the past a reality now.  CLICK HERE for BEST BUY's full list of high-tech pranks you can do for a high-scare Halloween. BOO-HA-HA-HA!!!!

Happy Halloween!!!

Nickelodeon is going to the dogs with premiere of new series Mutt & Stuff

Programming on Nickelodeon is going to the dogs, and I'm not talking about the Pups of PAW Patrol which my kids adore, with the addition of a brand new television series in which will feature Cesar Millan, star of Nat Geo WILD's Cesar 911 and former star of Dog Whisperer, and his son Calvin interacting with a cast of real dogs and puppets at a canine school called Mutt & Stuff.  This series, also called Mutt & Stuff, will balance teaching puppies to behave and perform tricks with lessons for children to help with identifying and managing their emotions, building interpersonal awareness, and developing social skills.  Additionally the show will carry a message promoting pet adoptions and responsible pet ownership based upon Cesar Millan's philosophies.

Mutt & Stuff will premiere on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 10 am (ET/PT), joining Nickelodeon's regular weekly morning preschool lineup of content that includes the popular shows PAW Patrol and Blaze and the Monster Machines.  Sid and Marty Krofft, the creators of two of my favorite TV shows when I was a youngster H.R. Pufnstuf and Land of the Lost, are serving as executive producers along with Cesar Millan on bringing this show to life on Nickelodeon.

The focus of the show will be on following 16 year old Calvin Millan and his best friend Stuff, a larger-than-life dog with a personality to match as they take viewers inside the doors of Mutt & Stuff.  Each episode will feature fun tricks, training lessons, and some doggy humor with the help of 15 playful puppies and some charismatic puppets.  Cesar will join in on showing Calvin and Stuff how dogs should be guided and highlighting the benefits that the friendship and loyalty of puppies can bring to a family.

Calvin began working with his father at the age of eight when he appeared on the Dog Whisperer helping to train small dogs.  In 2012, he toured Asia and Canada with his dad appearing in the show CESAR MILLAN LIVE.  Cesar of course is well known for his time as the host of the Dog Whisperer television series and more recently as the star of Nat Geo WILD's Cesar 911.  He is also a best-selling author, frequent public speaker, and a pet care product designer.

In addition to Mutt & Stuff being broadcast on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr cable networks, NickJr.com and the Nick Jr. App will feature Mutt & Stuff content and clips.  The series premiere episode will also be available to view via NickJr.com, the Nick Jr. App and on Nick Video On Demand beginning July 11.

Halloween is a Tricky Time for those with Food Allergies

I had never had any experiences with any friends, family, co-workers or acquaintances suffering from food allergies until the day my daughter ate some peanut butter and we found ourselves in a hospital ER not sure if she was going to live or die after going into anaphylactic shock.  Fortunately everything turned out all right but now everyday is a challenge to avoid food and situations that could put her in peril.

I didn't realize just how much food I'd taken for granted over the years was dangerous for people suffering from food allergies either from ingredients or contamination during the manufacturing, baking or packaging of the product until we had to start monitoring what we fed our family.  The feeling of loneliness and exclusion when dealing with others that don't provide compassion or consideration, and in some cases even express hostility, towards your situation is a factor that I hadn't taken into consideration until food allergies started impacting our daily lives and we experienced these situations first hand.  We've already encountered our kids not being invited to play dates and birthday parties because the other students' parents didn't want to deal with our "food allergy" children being at their function.  On another occasion, we had to sit in the back of the room at a school holiday concert  away from everyone else because the event featured a pot luck buffet full of things that weren't safe for my daughter to eat and they fed everyone before instead of after the students performance of songs that my children had practiced for weeks and were very excited to participate in.

Holidays in particular can be a tricky time with so many parties and events that have a focus on food, especially Halloween.  Halloween was always one of my favorite times of year as a child.  I loved the spooky vibe of the season filled with costumes and decorations and of course trick-or-treating was a huge thrill.  While we stay away from many of the trick-or-treat type events surrounding the holiday, we do go out on Halloween night because I just didn't feel that it was fair for my kids to see all the other children in the neighborhood running around having fun and have to make them stay in the house.  We only go to a few houses in our neighborhood though and our kids don't touch or eat any of the candy.  When they get home my son and daughter trade in their candy for a treat bundle that my wife and I put together for them that includes toys and Halloween themed trinkets.  This year they are getting some Disney Infinity video game figures, Crayola coloring sets, and Scholastic books for their candy trade in. As we are imposing on others by visiting their homes asking for treats we take the responsibility on ourselves to be safe but awareness and consideration regarding food allergies by our neighbors is always appreciated.

My children's allergy doctor participates in the Metro Detroit Food Allergy Friendly Trick-or-Treasure event

Our kids are also lucky in that our community has been generous enough to adopt a Food Allergy Friendly Trick-or-Treasure event for children in the Metro Detroit area to attend the Saturday before Halloween that we enjoy going to.  The organizers screen candy labels for ingredient or contamination warnings and only purchase items identifies as safe for kids with peanut or tree nut allergies, though they do make an effort to accommodate for the eight top allergens impacting children.  They than distribute this candy and some other non-food treats (including comic books from Halloween Comic Fest) to businesses in our downtown who are participating sponsors along the trick or treat route so everyone has pre-screened goodies to hand out.

While the number of children with food allergies is still a small percentage of the population, the numbers are unfortunately growing.  Today, 1 in 12 children, approximately 8 million children living in the United States, are allergic to peanuts, tree nuts or milk, ingredients commonly found in candy.  What is really scary is that cases of the most life-threatening allergy, peanuts, have doubled in the last five years.  So there really are quite a few families dealing with food allergies at Halloween, more than you may have been aware of.

1. CONTAMINATION IS AS BIG AN ISSUE AS INGREDIENTS

Microscopic contamination of food or candy can make treats unsafe even if they don't have the allergen in their actual ingredients.  Don't just look at the ingredients on labels but also watch out for labels that identify if a treat was processed, prepared or packaged in a facility with the allergens.

2.  HOME BAKED & BAKERY MADE ITEMS ARE A NO NO

Unfortunately, even with washing, if the same bowls, pans, utensils and other kitchen tools are used to make and prepare items that contain allergens there is a significant risk of contamination though the food itself may not have the allergen as an ingredient.  That often makes home baked goods and items from bakeries off-limits for kids with food allergies.

3.  IT IS NOT JUST EATING - TOUCHING ALLERGENS CAN CAUSE REACTIONS

In the case of my daughter, peanut or tree nut oil can be absorbed into her skin causing a reaction.  A child with peanut butter on their hands touching her skin or someone inadvertently contaminating a toy, seat, or desktop by handling something containing peanuts or tree nuts than her handling the same item creates a potential hazard.  Being wary of multiple types of exposures is so important.  The simple act of the wrapper from a piece of candy being torn and thrown into a goodie bag or trick-or-treat sack could contaminate the wrappers of every other item included with it.

4.  LET KIDS GRAB TREATS THEMSELVES OR PUT ITEMS IN THEIR BUCKETS - DON'T TRY TO HAND THEM CANDY

It can be really scary to have a food allergy and someone is trying to force candy you know you shouldn't be touching in your hand.  Every year we have well-meaning people trying to force my daughter to take Reese's Peanut Butter Cups from them by handing them to her even when she says no thank you.  Let the kids grab treats from a bowl or drop them in their trick or treat bucket just to be safe.

5.  LISTEN TO THE KIDS

If a child has a food allergy and sees that you are giving out something they shouldn't have they'll probably tell you and say thanks but I can't have that. Often times my kids just won't take unsafe candy from a bowl or will simply let someone drop it in their bag and not say anything knowing they are trading it to us at the end of the night.  It is when people start trying to force my kids to handle unsafe candy from them where problems occur though.  Every year I witness people telling my kids that food allergies aren't that big of a deal and go ahead and try it.  Than I have to step in!

It amazes me that my kids are always polite and say "thank you but I can't have that because of a food allergy so no thanks" yet adults get angry and argue with them.  Really?!!!

6.  EVERY CHILD SHOULD HAVE A FUN HALLOWEEN

Try to provide treats at Halloween that are safe for everyone so no child is excluded from Halloween fun.  If you feel it is a necessity to include treats that aren't safe for everyone than provide other options and make sure you keep things segregated.  Many of the food allergy deaths reported within the United States the last few years have been from accidents involving safe and non-safe foods being intermingled.

The charity Kids With Food Allergies has provided a nice digital booklet with tips on trick or treating and other fun activities for food allergic children titled Celebrating Halloween With Food Allergies.  CLICK HERE to download it.

 7. SPREAD THE WORD

Because a majority of people do not have food allergies it just doesn't occur to them how important it is to make their home an allergy-friendly stop on the trick-or-treat trail or to take precautions at parties or community events.  Please share this post with friends and families to help make everyone aware!

This Halloween, the charity Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) is encouraging people to start a new tradition that will help make this holiday season less scary for children with food allergies: the TEAL PUMPKIN PROJECT.  This campaign encourages people to raise awareness of food allergies by providing non-food or food allergy safe treats for trick-or-treaters and painting a pumpkin teal - the color of food allergy awareness - to place in front of their house or display a free printable sign from FARE featuring a teal pumpkin on their front door.

VALU HOME CENTERS has a nice post on their website about how to create a teal pumpkin and participate in the  #TealPumpkinProject.  CLICK HERE to check it out.
