bd's Mongolian Grill

It is National Tequila Day so I stopped by bd's Mongolian Grill in downtown Royal Oak, Michigan to enjoy some margaritas and try out their new steak fajita stir fry recipe courtesy of the restaurant which was hosting a blogger fiesta for the evening.  What started out as a Metro Detroit restaurant now has locations in nine states (Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, and Pennsylvania).  Head over to gomongo.com to see if there is a restaurant near you.

The premise of the restaurant is based upon folklore of how soldiers of the Mongol Empire gathered large quantities of meat, prepared them with their swords and cooked them on their upturned shields over a large fire so now bd's Mongolian Grill is bringing that style of cooking to modern times. Meals are prepared by diners walking through a buffet filling a bowl with their choice of a variety of thinly sliced meats (such as beef, chicken, pork, and shrimp), noodles and vegetables.  Head over to a giant 8-foot circular grill that is heated up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit and the restaurant's cooks will add your choice of sauce to the mix and stir fry your meal for you using 3-foot "swords. Feeling intimidated on what to gather up for your dish? They have recipe cards with mild, medium and hot recipe suggestions that have some Mongolian barbeque flair to them that you can pick up to take through the buffet line.  Just gather the ingredients listed on the cards and they'll make up your meal for you on the grill.

They've also just added some cards that have recipes with an American Southwestern flavor to them like the Steak Fajita stir fry I had mixed up for me. Oh was it good! As soon as I was done with my plate I went back for seconds. Then enjoyed a desert of deep fried Oreos accompanied with vanilla ice cream and hot fudge to dip the cookies in that was incredible.

Of course it being National Tequila Day, I enjoyed myself a Mongo Margarita. bd's Mongolian Grill is having a Margarita Madness special this summer.  $5 Margs all day, every day!  Frozen or on the rocks.
