Since its founding in 1939 as Timely Comics, Marvel has published some of the most iconic series in American comic book history, including The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and X-Men that have shaped pop culture. While the comic book publisher is now mostly recognized for its superhero characters, Marvel also had a history of crafting horror and science fiction stories that were popular in the 1960s and '70s but have faded from mainstream audiences memory. Fantagraphics is hoping to bring some of these stories back to light by releasing this year three hardcover anthologies which will introduce today's readers to some Lost Marvels.
The first of these three anthologies which debuts today is a collection of the issues from the horror series Tower of Shadows which originally ran in 1969. Lost Marvels No. 1: Tower of Shadows, collects all nine issues of the series. In 1969, with its revolutionary superhero line well established, Marvel took a chance on the kind of supernatural, EC-style anthology series that had been banned since the formation of the Comics Code in the 1950s. Tower of Shadows featured a staggering array of artists and writers, including Neal Adams, Jim Steranko, Barry Windsor-Smith, John Buscema, Gene Colan, Wally Wood, Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, John Romita, Johnny Craig, Marie Severin, Gerry Conway, and Bernie Wrightson, to name a few. Freed from the conventions of the superhero adventure, these creators brought their storytelling skills to a more quietly sinister genre, producing atmospheric gems of twisted suspense and sardonic horror. In July, Fantagraphics will publish Lost Marvels No. 2: Howard Chaykin Vol. 1: Dominic Fortune, Monark Starstalker, and Phantom Eagle. When Howard Chaykin broke into comics in the 1970s, there was nothing quite like him. His original characters Dominic Fortune and Monark Starstalker took classic pulp heroes and ran them through a postmodern blender. This new volume collects some of the most exciting, sought-after work by Chaykin from 1975 to 2008, including retro-science-fiction bounty hunter Monark Starstalker’s debut appearance and all the Dominic Fortune stories, including the character’s unexpurgated Max series, published a generation later.
Completing the package is the collision between pulp heroism and the devastating, bloody realities of World War I in Chaykin’s 111-page collaboration with The Boys writer Garth Ennis on War Is Hell: The First Flight of the Phantom Eagle. As the artist behind Marvel’s comic adaptation of the first Star Wars movie and the creator of iconic, influential series like the sci-fi satire American Flagg! and the adults only vampire saga Black Kiss, Howard Chaykin has earned his reputation as a prolific and essential cartoonist. In November, Fantagraphics will publish Lost Marvels No. 3: Savage Tales. Best known for Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith’s Conan the Barbarian and the first appearance of Gerry Conway and Gray Morrow’s Man-Thing, 1971’s Savage Tales was a stunning comics magazine in the spirit of Creepy and Heavy Metal. This volume will collect all 11 issues of the series featuring work from Stan Lee, John Romita, Dennis O’Neil, Al Williamson, Jim Steranko, John Buscema, and a host of other legendary creators delivering a high-octane combination of fantasy, horror, and action. Lost Marvels No. 3: Savage Tales will be published on November 18, 2025.

It seems like we're always wondering when the next kid friendly film will be arriving at theaters so we can go on a family outing to the theaters. Unfortunately when you have young children there aren't always a lot of options for movies that the whole family can go together to see without worrying about violence, sexual situations, and other mature themes being portrayed on the big screen in front of your little ones. So I've compiled a calendar of the more kid friendly motion pictures that will be playing at theaters in 2016 to keep track of when some of the best times throughout the year will be to consider a family trip to the movies.
NORM OF THE NORTH - January 15
A polar bear of many words, Norm’s greatest gripe is simple:

KUNG FU PANDA 3 - January 29

THE LITTLE PRINCE - March 18
The story centers around a young girl who befriends an eccentric old neighbor. The elderly man shares with her his tale of being a pilot who crash-landed in the Sahara
desert and came across a little boy who says he is a prince fallen to Earth
from his home on an asteroid. As the pilot repaired his plane, the little prince
regales him with stories about his home and the foolish inhabitants of nearby
asteroids.
THE JUNGLE BOOK - April 15
The Jungle Book is an all-new live-action epic adventure
about Mowgli, a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of
wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome
tiger Shere Khan, who bears the scars of Man, promises to
eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever
known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by
panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera and the
free-spirited bear Baloo. Along the way, Mowgli
encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart,
including Kaa, a python whose seductive voice and
gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie, who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to
the elusive and deadly red flower: fire.
RATCHET & CLANK - April 29
Ratchet & Clank tells the story of two unlikely heroes
as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every
planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind -- a foolhardy
"lombax" who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family
of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the
two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they
must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in
order to save the galaxy. Along the way, they will learn about heroism,
friendship, and the importance of discovering one's own identity.
ANGRY BIRDS - May 20
A feature-length movie based on the popular downloadable
game in which birds try to attack pigs who stole their eggs.
ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS - May 27
In this sequel to Alice in Wonderland, Alice Kingsleigh has spent the past few years
following in her father’s footsteps and sailing the high seas. Upon her return
to London, she comes across a magical looking glass and returns to the
fantastical realm of Underland and her friends the White Rabbit,
Absolem, the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter (played by Johnny Depp), who is not
himself. The Hatter has lost his Muchness, so Alice embarks on
a quest to borrow the Chronosphere, a metallic globe inside the chamber of the
Grand Clock which powers all time. Returning to the past, she comes across
friends – and enemies – at different points in their lives, and embarks on a
perilous race to save the Hatter before time runs out.
FINDING DORY - June 17
Finding Dory takes place about a year after the events that transpired in the Finding Nemo which won the 2003 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Finding Dory addresses the one emotionally open-ended issue that remained from
the first movie: Where is Dory’s family, and will this overly-optimistic fish
with short-term memory loss ever be able to find them again? This movie's setting moves from the Australian backdrop of the first movie to to the California coastline in this one and features a that welcomes a host of
new characters, including a few who will prove to be a very important part of
Dory’s life.
BFG - July 1
The BFG, while a giant himself, is a Big
Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing
24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly
dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler and Fleshlumpeater on the other hand, are twice
as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the
BFG prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle. Upon her arrival in Giant Country,
Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of
the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize
that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met a
giant before, has many questions. The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Country where
he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about the magic
and mystery of dreams.
Having both been on their own in the world up until now, their affection for
one another quickly grows. But Sophie’s presence in Giant Country has attracted
the unwanted attention of the other giants, who have become increasingly more
bothersome. Sophie and the
BFG soon depart for London to see Queen Victoria and warn her
of the precarious giant situation, but they must first convince the Queen that giants do indeed exist. Together, they come
up with a plan to get rid of the giants once and for all.
Adapted from Roald Dahl's 1982 novel, which was illustrated by Quentin
Blake this film marks Steven Spielberg’s first time directing a Disney-branded
movie.
SECRET LIFE OF PETS - July 8
Set in a Manhattan apartment building, after the two-legged
residents head for work and school, their pets gather to start their day, which
consists of hanging out, trading humiliating stories about their owners, and
helping each other work up adorable looks that will lead to more snacks. The
head hound is a quick-witted terrier rescue, whose
position at the epicenter of his master’s universe is suddenly threatened when
she comes home with Duke, a sloppy mongrel with no
polish. The two soon find themselves on the mean streets of New York, where
they meet the adorable white bunny Snowball. It turns
out that Snowball is the leader of an army of pets that were abandoned and are
determined to get back at humanity and every owner-loving pet. The dogs must
thwart this plot and make it back in time for dinner.
ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE - July 22
Scrat’s epic pursuit of the elusive acorn catapults him into
the universe where he accidentally sets off a series of cosmic events that
transform and threaten the Ice Age World. To save themselves, Sid, Manny,
Diego, and the rest of the herd must leave their home and embark on a quest
full of comedy and adventure, traveling to exotic new lands and encountering a
host of colorful new characters.
KUBO & THE 2 STRINGS - August 19
Clever, kindhearted Kubo ekes out
a humble living, telling stories to the people of his seaside town including
Hosato, Hashi and Kamekichi. But his relatively quiet existence is shattered when he accidentally
summons a spirit from his past which storms down from the heavens to enforce an
age-old vendetta. Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey and Beetle,
and sets out on a thrilling quest to save his family and solve the mystery of
his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known. With
the help of his shamisen - a magical musical instrument - Kubo must battle gods
and monsters, including the vengeful Moon King and the evil
twin Sisters to unlock the secret of his legacy, reunite his
family and fulfill his heroic destiny.
STORKS - September 23
Storks deliver babies…or at least they used to. Now they
deliver packages for global internet giant Cornerstore.com. Junior, the
company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally
activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly
unauthorized baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the
boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain,
race to make their first-ever baby drop – in a wild and revealing journey that
could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in
the world.
TROLLS - November 4
Not much has been released about this animated movie yet except that it revolves around those creatures with the funky hair that old ladies keep as lucky charms while playing Bingo.
FANTASTIC BEASTS & WHERE TO FIND THEM - November 18
Set in New York roughly seven decades before Harry Potter’s
saga starts, Fantastic Beasts is based on the Hogwarts textbook of the same
name and follows the adventures of its author, Newt Scamander.
MOANA - November 23
In the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, Moana, a born
navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible
journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse
the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures,
breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.
SING - December 21
Matthew McConaughey voices "Buster Moon," a dapper
Koala who runs a once-great theater now fallen on hard times. Seeing the thing
he loves most in his life coming to ruin, Buster connives to restore the
theater’s fortunes by producing the world’s greatest singing competition.
The last few years the lineup of family friendly movies during the summer has really been ho-hum with most of the best films coming out during the Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday season. 2016 could reverse that trend with what appears will be some of the year's best Kids Movies being released in June and July. My wife is really excited about going to see Finding Dory, in fact probably more excited than my kids are, and the two movies my 7 year old twins appear to be most excited to go see, Secret Life of Pets and Ice Age: Collision Course are coming out in July. Just like when Frozen, we don't know much about Disney's big animated feature Moana in advance of its release. People went into Frozen not necessarily knowing much about what it was about and fell in love with it. Could Moana have the same Disney magic? If so than the holiday season could again overtake the summer as the blockbuster time of year for kids movies. Also keep an eye out for Sing which comes out at the end of the year from the studio that brought you the Despicable Me and Minions movies. Moana, Trolls, Fantastic Beasts and Sing could make for some great end of the year movie watching if these films all live up to studio expectations.
So what kids movie is your family most looking forward to seeing this year?
I went to the movie theater a lot more than usual last year and it appears that I wasn't alone with three films, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens setting all-time box office records. In addition to going to a bunch of children's focused shows with my kids like Alvin & The Chipmunks: Road Chip, Hotel Transylvania 2, Home, Inside Out, Minions, Peanuts, The Good Dinosaur, and Shaun the Sheep last year, there were also a lot of times I left the twins at home going out with my wife, friends or by myself to see Ant-Man, Creed, The Martian, Tomorrowland, Mad Max: Fury Road, and James Bond SPECTRE, plus the three mega hits mentioned above that included Star Wars twice, because there were a lot of films playing in 2015 I really wanted to enjoy watching with the theater experience. The movie industry isn't resting on its laurels though as 2016 looks to be even more of a blockbuster year filled with action packed films from start to finish.
Here are a few of the films, I'm most looking forward to in 2016:
THE REVENANT - JANUARY 8
The scenery may be the star of this film which was filmed on location in the rugged Canadian wilderness. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, it is the true story of legendary explorer Hugh Glass who after being brutally attacked by a bear is left for dead by his own hunting party. Guided by his sheer will to live, Glass must struggle to survive through the uncharted American wilderness in the 1800s era.
THE 5THE WAVE - JANUARY 22
Following in the popularity of Sci-Fi young adult novels like The Maze Runner and The Hunger Games being turned into hit movies is this adaption of Rick Yancey's 2013 book The 5th Wave. In this movie, the Earth has been devastated by an alien invasion. A teenage survivor searches for her brother, who may or may not have been abducted by human-looking extra-terrestrials. She is helped in her search by a boy who also might be an alien in disguise.
THE FINEST HOURS - JANUARY 29
On February 18, 1952, a massive
nor’easter struck New England, pummeling towns along the Eastern seaboard and
wreaking havoc on the ships caught in its deadly path, including the SS
Pendleton, a T-2 oil tanker bound for Boston, which was literally ripped in
half, trapping more than 30 sailors inside its rapidly-sinking stern. As the
senior officer on board, first assistant engineer Ray Sybert (played by Casey Affleck)
soon realizes it is up to him to take charge of the frightened crew and inspire
the men to set aside their differences and work together to ride out one of the
worst storms to ever hit the East Coast. Meanwhile, as word of the disaster
reaches the U.S. Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts, Warrant Officer
Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana) orders a daring operation to rescue the stranded men.
Despite overwhelming odds, four men, led by Coast Guard Captain Bernie Webber
(Chris Pine), set out in a wooden lifeboat with an ill-equipped engine and
little, if any, means of navigation, facing frigid temperatures, 60-foot high
waves and hurricane-force winds.
DEADPOOL - FEBRUARY 12
Expanding on the X-Men mutant universe that it has the rights to, Twentieth Century Fox brings one of Marvel Comic books most popular characters to the silver screen. Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces
operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue
experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter
ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor,
Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life. This film is full of smart ass humor and like this trailer is something you probably don't want younger children to see.
ZOOLANDER 2 - FEBRUARY 12
10 years have passed since the events in the first movie. Derek and Hansel are no longer relevant anymore in the fashion world. Then Interpol contacts them for help when the world's most beautiful people are being killed one-by-one and they need to infiltrate the modeling scene to catch the murder. If you want to go see a silly, goofy comedy that's charm is it doesn't take itself seriously this movie promises to be full of laughs.
LONDON HAS FALLEN - MARCH 4
Olympus Has Fallen was a surprisingly good movie that reminded me of the Die Hard movies that I really enjoyed in my high school and college years. This 2013 story of the White House being taken over by terrorists did respectfully well at the box office grossing over $161 million at the box office worldwide. So of course they made an action packed sequel -- London Has Fallen. The plot really isn't important, if you enjoy action movies filled with explosives and stunts you'll want to see this film.
BATMAN VS SUPERMAN - MARCH 25
This isn't just a battle between two larger than life super heroes, this film is the beginning of a smack down duel between two gigantic corporations as Warner Brothers' DC Comics subsidiary battles Disney's Marvel Entertainment subsidiary by creating its own comic book inspired cinematic universe to compete for the hearts, and dollars, of movie goers. Batman vs Superman consider each other a danger to society, but an even larger villain looms that could prove to doom the world. Will this movie be the Doomsday for Warner Brothers comic book movies or just the beginning of a series of successful films that ties together DC Comics characters through the Justice League similarly to what Disney has done with Marvel's Avengers. I can't wait to find out!
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR - MAY 6
Disney counters Warner Brothers Batman vs Superman with its next mega-Marvel movie. In this Captain America movie, when the government sets up a governing body to oversee the
Avengers, the team splinters into two camps -- one led by Steve Rogers and his
desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government
interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to
support government oversight and accountability. With all the appearances by various Marvel superheroes this movie could really also be called Avengers 3 though of course they have another film already planned coming up by that name. The script for the film is based upon one of Marvel Comics all time most popular story arcs which was also titled Civil War.
X-MEN APOCALYPSE - MAY 27
Twentieth Century Fox isn't letting Warner Brothers and Disney have all the fun when it comes to the current comic book craze in the movie industry. 2016 really is the year of comic book movies with Batman vs Superman, Civil War and Twentieth Century Fox adding Deadpool and a new X-Men movie into the mix.
Since the dawn of civilization, Apocalypse was worshipped as
a god. He was the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe,
and amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible.
Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as
he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened
Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order,
over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven
(Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a
team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from
complete destruction.
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES - JUNE 3
I find these Mutant Ninja Turtles really creepy but really like this souped up garbage truck in the trailer. This sequel based upon the comic books created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman looks better than the 2014 film it follows.
WORLD OF WARCRAFT - JUNE 10
Comic book inspired movies have become hits the last few years can video games have the same pop culture success? This movie based upon the popular video game franchise World of Warcraft aims to find out.
The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as
its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their
dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds,
one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides,
two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their
family, their people and their home. So begins a spectacular saga of power and
sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something.
INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE - JUNE 24
Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have
collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing
can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the
ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink

THE LEGEND OF TARZAN - JULY 1

with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back
to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a
pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian,
Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what
they are about to unleash.
GHOSTBUSTERS - JULY 15
In this reboot of the original Ghostbusters movie, Erin Gilbert and Abby Bergman are a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that
ghosts are real. A few years later, Gilbert lands a prestigious teaching
position at Columbia University, but her book resurfaces and she is laughed out
of academia. Gilbert reunites with Bergman and others when ghosts invade
Manhattan and try to save the world. If you liked Bridesmaids this film will have a lot of the same players in it with an all-female cast.
STAR TREK BEYOND - JULY 22
This film will mark the 50th anniversary of the airing of the original Star Trek TV series and features the continuing adventures of the re-imagined crew based upon the cast and stories from that show. This will be the third installment of the new rebooted Star Trek cinematic story arc starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock.
SUICIDE SQUAD - AUGUST 5
The next edition of Warner Brothers comic book cinematic universe based off of a popular DC Comics series of the same name. In it a mix of well-known and unknown villains (Deadshot, King
Shark, Captain Boomerang and Harley Quinn) are recruited by the government to
accomplish a task deemed too dangerous for superheroes. The historically
independent operators must bury their own interpersonal conflicts and agendas
to form a cohesive unit to take on a singular task.
INFERNO - OCTOBER 28
Tom Hanks returns as Robert
Langdon tries to stop a global genocide scheme by following clues in Dante
Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy" which take him to Florence and
Venice, Italy. He battles a chilling adversary and grapples with an ingenious
riddle that pulls him into a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and
futuristic science.
DOCTOR STRANGE - NOVEMBER 4
If this movie based upon the classic Marvel comic book character is as good as Disney's 2015 Ant-Man it should be a real treat to watch.
FANTASTIC BEASTS & WHERE TO FIND THEM - NOVEMBER 18
Warner Brothers is trying to keep the magic of Harry Potter alive with this new film. With a script by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and the director of the last four Potter movies, David Yates, this film aims to transport people back to wizarding world portrayed in the popular book and movie franchise. This film though features all new characters and places set in a time period decades before Harry Potter was born. The idea for the film was inspired by a Harry Potter Hogwart's textbook called "Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them" written by a "magiczoologist" named Newt Scamander who is the principal character in what is expected to be the first in a trilogy of films.
STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE - DECEMBER 16
This is the movie I'm most looking forward to seeing in 2016! Director Gareth Edwards promises to put in the "War" in "Star Wars" with this film that will have a gritty battle vibe to it reminiscent to Saving Private Ryan. Comic books and Sci-Fi really dominate this year's movie releases, but eventually the pop culture interest will move on, so if you are a fan of these type adventure movies like I am enjoy the ride while it lasts.
