LITWAK'S ARCADE
For our family movie night we recreated Litwak's Arcade with some miniature arcade cabinets from Basic Fun Toys. Litwak's Arcade is where the FIX IT FELIX JR video game that is Ralph's home is located in the Wreck It Ralph movies. We had fun playing Basic Fun! Q-Bert, Frogger and Fix It Felix Jr. Arcade Classics that I picked up from Walmart. While Fix It Felix Jr. looks like a Donkey Kong style 1980's era video game, a real version of the game didn't exist until Walt Disney Studios built a limited number of arcade cabinets to use in promoting the 2012 release of Wreck It Ralph. Disney also released an app and website-hosted version of the game as well. Now Basic Fun! has also released a miniature cabinet version of Fix It Felix Jr. as part of its Arcade Classics toy collection.
The Basic Fun! version of Fix It Felix Jr. plays just like it is portrayed in the Wreck It Ralph movies. The game starts off with Ralph climbing up to the top of the Nicelanders' apartment building smashing windows along the way. Players need to fix the windows with Felix's magic hammer while avoiding bricks being tossed down by Ralph.
In addition to dodging bricks, you'll need to avoid ducks that fly by and other obstacles that present themselves as levels become more difficult. To help you, sometimes a Nicelander will leave a pie in a window. Eating a pie will temporarily make Felix invincible and increase the magic hammer's power so that it can fix two broken window panels at a time.
Complete a level and you earn a medal. Then the Nicelanders toss Ralph off the apartment's roof. Just as shown in the Wreck It Ralph movie! Though it has a simple premise the game is actually really fun to play. While goofing around playing these games with my kids reminded me of good times when I was the age they are now stuffing quarters into Burger Time, Centipede, and Pac-Man at arcades trying to get my name listed on the high score rankings.
ONLINE SAFETY
The Internet is an amazing thing but as fun and useful as it can be there are also dangers and perils to be aware of. So Walt Disney Studios is having Wreck It Ralph partner with Google's Be Internet Awesome campaign to help promote online safety with kids. We spent some time playing an online game called Interland that teaches children about digital safety while they have fun. Then spent some time going through the Be Internet Awesome Family Guide and doing some Wreck it Ralph 2 activity sheets that highlighted some of the online safety pointers we'd just gone over.
MOVIE TIME
We wrapped up an evening of family time watching the feature presentation → WRECK IT RALPH 2: RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET. Rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for action sequences and rude humor, Ralph Breaks the Internet from our experience is a great movie for a family to enjoy together for a movie night. It brings together the Walt Disney Studios cinematic universe with humorous moments and parodies that include among other things cameos by Marvel's Stan Lee, Star Wars' C-3P0 and a whole bunch of Disney Princesses.
So what is the movie about? Ralph's modification of his friend Vanellope von Scheweetz's video game leads to the Sugar Rush game being damaged. The two travel to the Internet with the hopes of obtaining a part need by Litwak's Arcade to avoid Sugar Rush being unplugged forever. In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet -- the netizens -- to help navigate their way, including an entrepreneur named Yesss, who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of trend-making site BuzzzTube. But in trying to save the day, Ralph sabotages the whole Internet.
