CAMP CROODS VIRTUAL EXPERIENCE

camp croods

While it may not be an ideal time due to the pandemic to visit Los Angeles' La Brea Tar Pits or Washington DC's Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is hosting some free virtual field trips to these spots to tie in with the release of The Croods: A New Age on Digital, DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K discs. Your family can join in these Camp Croods events taking place at the La Brea Tar Pits on Thursday, February 11, 2021 (6pm - 7:30 ET) / Saturday, February 13 (1:00pm - 2:30 ET) and at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History on Tuesday, February  23, 2021 from 6pm - 7 ET).

There is no charge to participate in these Camp Croods events but advance reservations are required. Participants will have the chance to learn about fossils and prehistoric times from a real life paleontologist plus learn how to draw characters from The Croods with a demonstration by a DreamWorks Animation illustrator who worked on the movie. Combining history and Hollywood together these Camp Croods events are a fun time that is both entertaining and educational.

This dad blogger had the chance to participate in an exclusive trial run of a Camp Croods session with my son before the free public forums go online and we were geeked to participate. This advance preview included a conversation with the film's director Joel Crawford where he shared some trivia about the time period when the movie takes place and the creatures that live in it. There are a lot of odd critters in The Croods: A New Age and he shared with us some of these zany creature mashups while highlighting a few of his favorites.

The La Brea Tar Pits are temporarily closed due to COVID-19 restrictions in California, but we had the chance to learn a bit about the facility during our Camp Croods experience. Plus we were able to participate in a live question and answer session with one of the paleontologists who works there. She shared with us how they've found hundreds of thousands of fossils excavating these tar pits ranging from the remains of minuscule insects to the gigantic skeletons of elephant-like mastodons at the La Brea Tar Pits.

We also had a drawing lesson from one of the animators for The Croods: A New Age. She showed us step by step how to draw the saber toothed pet of the Croods, Grug. Not only is my son a fan of The Croods movies but art is his favorite class at school so he really enjoyed this demonstration.

How well do you think you could do hand sketching Grug? Have your family try it out yourselves by participating in one of the free Camp Croods virtual experiences. In addition to the paleontologist talks and drawing demonstrations there are a few more fun aspects to Camp Croods that I will let you be surprised by. Don't miss out in these excellent La Brea Tar Pits and Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History that you can enjoy without having to leave the comfort of your own house.
