Marvel United Exclusive Kickstarter Expansion

Geek Daddy

I'm so geeked! My Kickstarter Pledge for CMON and Spin Master Games MARVEL UNITED finally arrived! MARVEL UNITED is a hybrid combination of a card game and a board game which involves deck building and moving miniature figures around a designated play area. Players cooperatively work together roleplaying as comic book-inspired heroes attempting to prevent a dastardly villain from completing a despicable master plan.

The core box for this fantastic tabletop game actually arrived at major retailers like Target and Walmart in 2020. It took awhile longer for me to get my hands on MARVEL UNITED though because in addition to the main game I also received an exclusive expansion of additional playable characters and villains to encounter that was provided as a bonus reward to those who supported the Kickstarter campaign. I also purchased an exclusive add-on playmat that was exclusively available through Kickstarter from CMON and Spin Master Games.

I'm really glad about purchasing the playmat because it really adds a nice visual element to playing the game. It also re-enforces the game rules and flow of play which is nice for family game nights when some extra structure can help keep my tween-aged tweens focused on the activity. The MARVEL UNITED playmat has a nicely stitched base and a neoprene skid free bottom providing a sturdy surface for a game that involves tossing cards and moving figures around. We've been playing the game a lot so this playmat really has been great to have.

Secondly, I also received an expansion box full of complimentary add-ons that were provided as fundraising stretch goals during the Kickstarter campaign. For those not familiar with Kickstarter, stretch goals are fundraising targets that if are met provides a reward to people financing the project. In this case, when the campaign met certain funding marks a new hero or villain was added to the game that is not available at retailers like Target and Walmart but exclusively provided to Kickstarter backers at no extra charge.

While the core box of the game has an Avengers focus containing a team that includes seven of Earth's Mightiest Heroes (Ant Man, Black Widow, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Hulk, Iron Man and the Wasp) and three villains (Red Skull, Ultron and Task Master), the MARVEL UNITED exclusive Kickstarter expansion pack adds an additional 33 heroes and 11 villains. This opens up numerous gameplay options with heroes from the entire Marvel universe of comics, television shows and movies.

Along with a miniature, each of the characters included in the expansion pack include a deck of cards compatible with the MARVEL UNITED core game. Bring together Netflix's Defenders (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist) to tackle the King Pin's master plan. Create a supernatural team of heroes with Doctor Strange, Blade, Moon Knight and Ghost Rider to take on the demonic Dormammu. Show some girl power with Ms. Marvel, Spider-Woman, She-Hulk and the Scarlet Witch battling Hela. Or you could have Black Cat, Falcon, Howard the Duck and Squirrel Girl go head to head with Rhino in a wild duel. So much expanded playability with MARVEL UNITED with this exclusive Kickstarter expansion.

Marvel United tabletop game

For those of you who may be interested in this expansion but missed the initial Kickstarter campaign last year for MARVEL UNITED there is some hope to get your hands on this fantastic expansion to the core game. CMON and Spin Master Games are hosting a sequel MARVEL UNITED Kickstarter campaign with an X-Men theme in mid-April 2021. They've announced that the expansion pack from the first Kickstarter campaign will be available to purchase as an add-on with the X-Men one. While you can't get it as free bonus content like I did, this still is a much affordable way to get these extra heroes and villains compared to through eBay scalpers. Plus there is sure to be a new expansion pack of stretch goal rewards with an X-men theme to go along with that sequel box set.

The expanded game play options with these extra heroes and villains has made playing an already entertaining game in MARVEL UNITED extra fun. I've really appreciated the attention to detail put into the characters and the chibi art style incorporated into the game. Though the game play is really fast-paced and fun have to say though the bland plastic coloring of the miniatures does become blah. I'm really going to have to get some hobby supplies and dip into painting miniatures for the first time to enhance this game just a bit.

Marvel United

The only dissatisfaction I have with the Marvel United Exclusive Kickstarter Expansion was that they didn't include extra battle locations for the game board within the stretch goal expansion pack or as a buyable add-on. The core box locations have an Avengers focus with sites such as Tony Starks' lab, a S.H.I.E.L.D. helocarrier, plus the Avengers' tower and mansion. It would have been nice to play with some more distinct locals tied to the newly included characters such as Sanctum Sanctorum, Hell's Kitchen, Wall Street and Ryker's Island. So that is my one gripe otherwise I've been very impressed by MARVEL UNITED.

An engaging super hero themed tabletop game that is exciting yet not too complicated to play, MARVEL UNITED gets a Geek Daddy nod of approval. Involving both strategic thinking and the luck of the draw this hybrid cooperative card game provides a dice free evening of gaming fun. Straight forward rules and the need for teamwork make MARVEL UNITED a great selection for a family game night. I've been having as much fun playing it as my twelve year old twins providing some quality family time and demonstrating this game can be appealing to both kids and adults. Highly recommend picking it up from Target or Walmart of joining in the MARVEL UNITED: X-MEN campaign coming to Kickstarter.

iLIVE SOUND BAR WITH WIRELESS SUBWOOFER

iLive

I've amped up my enjoyment of March Madness by adding a new 37" Bluetooth sound bar with wireless subwoofer to the television in my den. Wow! I didn't realize how much sound quality that was missing from just using the built-in speakers on the tv. You really get some nice bass from this iLive sound bar so it feels as well as sounds from the subwoofer as if the basketball is bouncing off your floor instead of on a court shown inside the tv screen.

My television doesn't have bluetooth capability so the sound is connected via a optical audio cable. It has sounded crystal clear since I hooked up the sound bar and subwoofer combo from iLive. Took about ten minutes to get everything connected and haven't had a complaint or problem with the setup since I installed it.

geek daddy

While I haven't been able to take advantage of the bluetooth capabilities with my television, have enjoyed streaming some of my Spotify music lists from my phone to this iLive sound bar. Appreciate that the remote control that comes with this package clearly identifies home theater and music modes to help users clearly be able to utilize these sound enhancement features which both work great. This soundbar and subwoofer has also made playing video games on the tv sound so much better!

While I have used an optical cord to connect between the sound bar and tv, it is appreciated that the speaker and subwoofer connect wirelessly. Just plug in a separate power cord to the subwoofer, flip the on switch and the subwoofer automatically meshes with the sound bar. The subwoofer interacts well with the sound bar doing a nice job of letting you feel the sound.

37 inch sound bar with wireless subwoofer

I've really enjoyed how this iLive 37" Bluetooth sound bar with wireless subwoofer has enhanced my listening experience. My wife and kids don't like to watch basketball so I'm often relegated to this room to watch games. Now I want to be in there instead of feeling forced to watch games in that room. Thanks iLive for enhancing my special space in the house. I have been so geeked since hooking this sound system up!

iLive provided this dad blogger with a complimentary sound bar system to upgrade my home office / den. Opinions expressed are honest and my own. Other than the featured product to review, I received no financial compensation for this endorsement. You can find this iLive 37" sound bar with wireless subwoofer at Walmart.

POOPEEZ

Look! Is it a bird? a plane? No it is ... Pooperman!!!  Pooperman joins other characters like Beary Stinky, Old Fart, Poo-dle, Poo-F-O, and Turdle in the new POOPEEZ collection of squishy toy collectibles from Basic Fun.

There are 36 mini-characters in all to collect that will be available on the shelves of Walmart toy aisles.  POOPEEZ can be found in toilet paper roll shaped blind packs that contain two mystery mini-figures with each of the characters inside ranging in difficulty to acquire from common to ultra rare.

Normally you wouldn't want to get a box full of poop left at your doorstep.  But I won't be mad that Basic Fun sent A Geek Daddy a promotional box full of POOPEEZ to flush out the news about these new toys.  My kids are at an age where they love collecting these type of blind bag mini-toys to play with and trade with their friends.  Plus they find potty humor hilarious.  So my son and daughter think POOPEEZ is a real toot!  They've been having a lot of fun joking and goofing around with the POOPEEZ that Basic Fun plopped on our front porch to discover.

In addition to colleting POOPEEZ figures in toilet paper roll packages there are also multi-packs available where you can see which characters are inside through the clear packaging.  Each multi-pack includes either a porta-potty or toilet accessory plus includes a selection of exclusive figures that aren't available in the tp roll blind packs.  The porta potty provides a nice storage bin for your POOPEEZ while the toilet bowl has some explosive launching action to it.

The POOPEEZ universe revolves around the porcelain paradise of Kerplopolis. Whenever a toilet is flushed in the real world a magical portal opens up to this bustling city where everything about poop is celebrated.  All of Kerploplis' citizens are colorful characters made out of items that have been flushed there such as poop, pee, farts and toilet paper.

Every city has its own problems and Kerplopolis is no different.  Follow the adventures of six heroes, T.P., Pooji, Lil' Squirt, Skid Mark, Dumpling, and the Toot Fairy, as they try to keep Kerplopolis from being a stinky place to live in cartoons that can be viewed for FREE on the POOPEEZ YouTube channel.  These characters animated journeys are filled with potty puns and jokes meant to garner smirks and get viewers to smile.

For more information, visit POOPEEZ.COM or follow the toy collection's social media accounts on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook.  Get a potty started with POOPEEZ!

Summer Water Fights with Prime Time Toys Adventure Force Blasters

** A Geek Daddy received the featured products for free to review**

Enjoy the hot summer months of the year outside getting wet in fun backyard water fights.  We had the opportunity to test out Prime Time Toys new Adventure Force line of water blasters over the Memorial Day weekend.  They worked really great and my kids had a great time playing with them.  I joined in the battle and have to say getting soaked on a hot day really is a refreshing way to cool off.

There are a number of Adventure Force water blasters to choose from, that range in size, water holding capacity, and features, which are available exclusively from Walmart.    We played around with the Super Storm and Hydro Blitz water blasters.  Each of these are recommended for ages 6+.

Super Storm

You'll dominate a water fight with the Super Storm.  You'll be able to outlast your competition when it comes to refilling with its 68-ounce size tank and hit them from a distance with its pressurized stream that can soar up to 38 feet.  Use its three adjustable nozzle setting to be strategic on how you soak your friends.  Quad-Stream sprays out four streams of water while Super Soak Blast provides one big drenching.  Flip to the Long-Range Blast to hit your targets from a distance as they try to flee from you.  My lids loved the variety of nozzle setting on this blaster the only drawback was that when fully filled it can be somewhat heavy to hold for younger kids and difficult to handle.  We alleviated the problem very easily by only filling it up half way and that made the kids happy.  The Super Storm is ideal for tweens and teens that want to engage in a water blaster bout.

Hydro Blitz

While the Hydro Blitz has a trigger it is just for imagery as it projects water through a pumping action.  Slide forward the pump action handle on the bottom of the blaster and push it back to launch out a strong blast of water.  This blaster also holds a lot of water storing up to 57 ounces plus has some nice distance to it as well being able to hit a distance of up to 35 feet.  Like the Super Storm when fully filled it can get to be quite heavy so for younger children it is recommended to only fill it up half way.  This is a heavy duty soaker that doesn't have special features to it but instead provides its user with a consistent intense stream through its easy to use pump action launcher for continuous fun during a water fight.  Tweens and teens who want to be running around while drenching each other will especially enjoy the Hydro Blitz.

Hydro Storm

Prime Time Toys also provided us with a Hydro Storm 6-Pack.  This water blaster set is recommended for ages 4+.  They are simplistic, easy to use water blasters that are particularly nice for younger children to play with.  They are very durably built, provide for quick action water release to projects up to 25 feet and are easy to refill.  Coming in a 6-pack makes this set ideal to bring out when you have a group gathering and want to make sure everyone has something to play with.  At under $10, based upon the quality of the blasters and the quantity of them this really is a great deal that I'd recommend for play dates, picnics, birthday parties and other summer activities.

Swing by your local Walmart retail location or visit walmart.com to pick up Prime Time Toys Adventure Force Water Blasters for some summer fun!

THE QUIET HOUR

American fans of the British made DOCTOR WHO television series will gladly testify that there are some great sci-fi stories being produced by studios outside of Hollywood.  THE QUIET HOUR is a great example of this.  Produced by the United Kingdom's Frenzy Films and shot at locations in Tipperary, Ireland this movie has received praise from audiences and critics at film festivals across the world.  After being shown on Sky Cinema, a premium cable channel similar to HBO that is available in the UK, THE QUIET HOUR is now available for science fiction fans in North America to view on all major video on demand (VOD) platforms and will be available on DVD beginning March 21, 2017 at retail outlets including Best Buy, Target and Walmart.

In THE QUIET HOUR, humans are few and far between since Earth was invaded by unseen extraterrestrial machines that harvest the planet's natural resources and relentlessly kill its inhabitants. In a remote part of the countryside, where starved humans have become as dangerous as the alien machines hovering in the sky, a feisty 19 year old girl, Sarah Connolly, sets out on a desperate attempt to fight back a group of bandits and defend her parents' farm, their remaining livestock, and the solar panels that keep them safe from extraterrestrials. If she doesn't succeed, she will lose her only source of food and shelter; but if she resists, she and her helpless blind sibling will be killed. And if the mysterious intruder dressed like a soldier who claims he can help them turns out to be a liar, then the enemy may already be in the house.

THE QUIET HOUR stars Dakota Blue Richards (“The Golden Compass,” “Skins”), Karl Davies (“Game of Thrones,” “Happy Valley”), Brigitte Millar (“James Bond Spectre,” “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and British TV star Jack McMullen.  It is being distributed in the United States and Canada by Vision Films.

A NEW WAVE OF SPLASHLINGS HAS ARRIVED

Wave 2 of the colorful Splashlings collectible toys has just arrived on store shelves.  After being one of the most sought after collectible toys during the holiday shopping season, Walmart will now be joining the ranks of retailers selling these toys as Wave 2 rolls out this month.  TPF Toys generously sent my daughter some of the Wave 2 assortments for free to play with and they've been a big hit.  She has been playing with them every night after she's done with her homework.  She's also been taking taking extra long baths lately having fun in the water with these mermaid themed toys.  Of course collecting these miniature figurines is also half the fun as she and her friends have been keeping track of who has the most unique collection and trading the toys among themselves ever since Wave 1 came out last year.

Invented by the famed Pound Puppies creator, Mike Bowling, Splashlings provide kids with an ocean full of friends.  Over 100 new mermaids, ocean creature pets, gems, shells, and treasures join the Splashlings family in Wave 2 doubling the total number of collectible items that are now available in the toy line between the two waves.  Wave 2 also is debuting a series of ultra-rare color changing characters for kids to look forward to finding in the Splashlings toy assortments.  When dipped in icy cold water they amazingly change colors.

Splashlings are designed for children ages 5 and older and are available in 12-pack, 6-pack, and 2-pack assortments.  The 12-pack includes a Mermaid, seven displayed Splashlings, 2 hidden mystery Splashlings, and 2 sea shell storage cases. The 6-pack includes 1 mermaid, four Splashlings, and one sea shell.  The 2-packs are mystery bags where you won't know what Splashlings you have until ripping open these foil packs.

There is also a Splashlings playset available called the Coral Treasure Park.  My daughter has been having a lot of fun playing with this.  I have to say whoever designed it did a very nice job in thinking out the layout for this toy.  It is compact so the Coral Treasure Park doesn't take up a lot of space but has plenty of nice features to keep kids entertained.  It has a lot of pegged spaces that fit with holes on the bottom of Splashlings toys so kids can display and store their collection without worrying about the figurines falling all about.  Plus parents will appreciate there is no assembly required!

Spinning the merry-go-round also causes the swing on the other side of the playset to rock on its own.  Pressing a button activates a launcher that allows Splashlings to sail down a twisting slide on an inner tube into a sea shell pool.  The sea shell pool also provides another storage option for kids Splashlings collection.

The Coral Treasure Park includes a Mermaid, two Splashlings pets, and one inner tube along with the play set structure.  If your child is going to be playing with Splashlings you really should pick them up a Coral Treasure Park.  It is great for both encouraging imaginative play with Splashlings, letting kids display and showoff their collection as well as for keeping these small toys together so you aren't finding them laying in a variety of places all around your house.

If your child enjoys this toy collection, check out the Splashlings youtube channel where you can stream a digital series that can be viewed for FREE.  These animated shows follow five mermaid guardians of the sea as they encounter adventures, fend off dastardly Mer-Pirates, and make new friends while protecting the underwater kingdom of Orabel.  In the first episode, the Mermaids receive a mysterious treasure map and are challenged to retrieve four special treasures throughout the Kingdom of Orabel.

Splashlings toys can be found at Walmart, Toys R Us, Justice Stores, and on Amazon.com.  Since my daughter's enjoyed her collection so much these toys get A Geek Daddy nod of approval.  For more information, please visit splashlings.com.

Animal Planet Giraffe Neck Support Pillow

** A Geek Daddy received the featured product for free to review **

We recently took a family road trip to Florida which involved four days in the car driving back and fourth from Michigan.  My daughter loves giraffes and this wonderful neck support pillow from Animal Planet really delighted her.  Amazingly we made it through the whole trip without her complaining of being uncomfortable as this pillow was a great fit keeping my seven year old's head comfortable and avoided it ending up in awkward positions which could cause aches and pains during the car ride.

We had such a great experience with this product, I highly recommend it for families who will be traveling with children that will have to be sitting in seats for any extended time whether that be by airplane, automobile or train.  Of course every parent knows that kids who are comfortable while traveling make the trek much more enjoyable for mom and dad too!  This Animal Planet giraffe neck support pillow really did the trick and I'm so glad we had it along with us for our long ride.

In addition to the giraffe, these Animal Planet neck support pillows are also available in a variety of other cute animals as well including a monkey, lion and elephant from retailers like  Walmart.  Recommended for children toddler aged to ten years old these pillows are made from soft polyester material that in addition to being comfortable also can survive the messes kids throw at it. The animal design also adds a bit of fun to the pillow that can also entertain kids while they are traveling.

Discovery Communications also provides a variety of toys and products associated with the programming on their television channels like this giraffe neck support pillow (Animal Planet, Discovery, Discovery Kids, Destination America, ID, Science Channel, TLC, and Velocity).  Check out what they have to offer at store.discovery.com.

Our Generation vs My Life Ice Cream Trucks

An ice cream truck is on my daughter's wish list to Santa this Christmas.  She has been eyeing these toy vehicles during our shopping trips throughout the year so it wasn't a surprise she'd ask for one.  There are two models to choose from being offered by competing brands of 18 inch dolls, My Life available at Walmart and Our Generation from Target.  Here's A GEEK DADDY's evaluation of these two ice cream trucks that are competing for your hard earned dollars to help other parents out there who may have children dreaming of finding one of these under the Christmas tree:

Both trucks are approximately the same price and are compatible with pretty much any of the 18" doll brands (American Girl, Journey Girls, Madame Alexander, My Life, Our Generation, etc) plus each toy vehicle has working wheels to facilitate a pretend driving experience.  Each comes with accessories that include miniature kitchen utensils, such as ice cream scoops and tongs, and imitation food, like doughnuts and sundaes, for kids to play with.  My Life's version has more of a food truck theme including hot dogs, hamburgers and shish kabobs among the 40 accessories that come with the toy.  Our Generation's vehicle has a more limited desert focus but provides substantially more accessories with 120+ items included aimed to stimulate creative play.  Each truck also includes a chalk board for kids to have fun drawing on.

The chalk board on the My Life truck flips up from the roof and comes with one piece of white chalk.

The Our Generation version is on the side of the vehicle which provides a larger more stable surface and comes with multiple pieces of chalk in a variety of colors.

The two vehicles differ significantly on how to access the kitchen section of the trucks.  The Walmart version separates from the rear allowing great playtime access to this area but by splitting in half it also sacrifices stability making the My Life truck not as structurally sturdy as the Our Generation one.

Our Generation's truck has an opening roof that provides adequate but more limited access to the area than My Life's.  While it may provide a more limiting play space than the My Life version, the Our Generation ice cream truck makes up for it by providing a toy vehicle that isn't as flimsy making it easier to roll around on its wheels and more durable for withstanding the carefree play of children. The kitchen area in the Our Generation model is also much more detailed with removable trays of imitation gelato on display, compared to My Life utilizing stickers to represent the same thing, for instance.  While the My Life just has several open shelves within its kitchen for storing the included accessories, Our Generation provides a fridge, freezer and cupboard with multiple doors to open and close. There is just a lot more attention to detail and realistic elements when it comes the the Our Generation ice cream truck compared to the My Life toy vehicle.

What really differentiates the Our Generation truck from the My Life one are the special battery operated features that it provides.  My Life's model doesn't provide any type of these features.  On the other hand, the Our Generation version has working windshield wiper action, headlights that turn on, rear lights that illuminate when the brake pedal is pushed down, and turn signal lights that activate when the steering wheel is turned left or right.  We have an ice cream truck that roams our neighborhood every summer playing tunes so you know it is coming down the road and can be waiting for it with your money to buy a treat.  The Our Generation ice cream truck plays tunes too!  Press the music button on its dashboard and it will play one of three songs. Sweet!

Another nice touch is that the Our Generation Sweet Stop Ice Cream Truck comes with batteries so it is ready to go right when you get it home.  Just note that you need to adjust a switch on the bottom of the vehicle under the front license plate from demo to play mode to get all of these neat features to work properly.  The instructions that come with it could probably highlight that point a bit more prominently.

There are some nice aspects to the My Life truck such as being able to have two dolls ride together in its front cab and the openness of its kitchen area but when sold for approximately the same price as Our Generation's version it just doesn't compare.  With it being a more sturdy and durable toy along with the impressive battery powered special effects and incredible number of included accessories, the Our Generation Sweet Stop Ice Cream Truck really overwhelmingly comes out on top between the two models.  The Our Generation ice cream truck really is a sweet ride!

Disclaimer: A Geek Daddy received the featured products for free to review. My daughter received the Our Generation ice cream truck prior to Christmas as a reward for doing well in school and because she caught wind of us doing this review. The My Life toy vehicle was repackaged as good as new and provided to a holiday toy drive for underprivileged kids. A Geek Daddy did not receive any financial compensation for this post. Opinions are honest and my own.

YOU'VE BEEN BOO'D

**A Geek Daddy received the featured product for free**
We were BOO'D by Sony Pictures and Walmart!  Booing is a Halloween tradition that has been growing in popularity over the last twenty years.  Someone mysteriously leaves you a fun treat around Halloween and you have 48 hours to put together your own creative gift of goodies to BOO someone else.  Our surprise was finding the new Ghostbusters movie, which was just released today on Blu-ray and DVD, along with an assortment of candy from Walmart waiting for my family by the front door this morning.

The GHOSTBUSTERS: ANSWER THE CALL -- EXTENDED EDITION on Blu-ray and Digital HD adds more than 15 minutes of never-before-seen film footage to Director Paul Feig's take on the long awaited next installment of the iconic 1980s era supernatural comedy movie franchise. Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy (Best Supporting Actress -- Bridesmaids), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live) and Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live) comprise a new Ghostbusters team who must defend Manhattan from mischievous ghouls who descend on Times Square.  The EXTENDED EDITION Blu-ray and digital download include both the extended edition and original theatrical version as well as 15 deleted, extended or alternate scenes, gag reels, and filmmaker commentaries. It also provides five featurettes that give fans an inside look into the film's supernatural visual effects, the "making of" the ghosts from the film, an in-depth insight into the team's look and weaponry, as well as the casting of Chris Hemsworth as the Ghostbusters' receptionist.

So now that we've been BOO'D it is time for us to #BooItForward.  Walmart is a great place to load up on goodies and treats to secretly leave at a friend's front door.  They've even dedicated a special Ghostbusters themed area of their website sponsored by American Greetings, Skittles, Snickers, Kellogg's and Sony Pictures that can help people make the perfect BOO kit to support this fast-growing, good spirited tradition.  Get on the BOO-wagon and visit Walmart.com/BooItForward. Who are you gonna BOO?!

We made sure to Boo It Forward by filling up a jack-o-lantern bucket filled with a variety of Halloween themed trinkets and treats.  Under the cover of darkness my son and daughter crept up to the house of one of their classmates quietly leaving the bundle of treats by the door we know she exits each morning for her walk to school.  I'm sure someone being BOO'D is going to be the topic everyone is talking about in their class tomorrow morning and my son and daughter are so excited to be a part of this Halloween secret.

Enjoy the Halloween season everyone! Share the fun! Boo It Forward!
