Indominus Rex – Zoomer Jurassic World Collectible Robotic Dinosaur – Spin Master Toys

** A Geek Daddy received the featured product free to review **

My son has a tendency to snoop at the presents under our Christmas tree so I added a bit of security this year to keep him from prying around under there.

Like most boys, my son is pretty fond of dinosaurs but we found it can be a bit scary and dangerous to play with the real things so we like this Zoomer Robotic Dino from Spin Master for him to have some fun with.

Joking aside Spin Master's Jurassic World collectible edition Indominus Rex was a blast for him to play with. Plus it did a pretty good job of keeping him away from snooping under our Christmas tree because my son's been focused on playing with the Zoomer Dino rather than what gifts he might be getting for the holiday. Indominus Rex lets you engage in your own Jurassic World adventures through imaginative play with this technologically advanced robotic dino. The toy uses True Balance Technology to independently hunt, patrol and explore its surroundings through its autonomous artificial intelligence modes without direction.

Unlike the untamable dinosaur in Jurassic World, you can control Spin Master's Indominus Rex actions through hand motions or an included remote control.  Advanced IR nose sensors allow Indominus Rex to sense your hand and respond to its movements.  Many robotic toys lately are using people's smart phones as their steering devices, but Indominus Rex comes with its own remote control that allows its users to control the toy's modes, record combo moves, and guide its movements.  I don't particularly care for handing my phone over to my six year old twins so they can play with a toy which made Indominus Rex's remote control a really attractive feature.

Indominus Rex is a limited edition version of Spin Master's Zoomer toy line.  It emits the real sounds used for the dinosaur in the Jurassic World movie.  Plus comes with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity that makes it not just a fun toy to play with but also a nice collectible item to display.

The remote control requires 3 AAA batteries, but the toy itself can be plugged into a computer with the  included USB cord to power its internal battery pack.  I hate always having to change batteries in my kids toys so I appreciate that Spin Master designed the toy so you can just plug it in to charge it up. If you have wall adapter for USB cords you can plug it straight into an electrical outlet for even faster and more convenient charging.

Indominus Rex is available at most major toy retailers or you can purchase it online from Spin Master by clicking here. The Zoomer Dino Indominus Rex Collectible Robotic Edition is recommend for ages 5+.

WowWee MiPosaur

** A Geek Daddy was provided the featured product for free **

Hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween this year.  Halloween is always such a fantastic time for our family with all the spooky fun that it involves but it also has us having to be very cautious with all the treats that are passed around because our children suffer from life threatening food allergies to peanuts and tree nuts.  We didn't want to exclude our kids from the thrill of trick-or-treating, especially with that being an exciting event that all their classmates participate in, but did set some important ground rules.  No touching or eating their candy until they return home and my wife or I have screened what they've been given.  Since 80% of the candy they normally receive is dangerous because of ingredient or production contamination issues, we have an annual tradition of our kids trading in their trick-or-treat candy for a special toy surprise they have been wanting.  This year's Halloween special surprise was a WowWee MiPosaur - a robotic pet dinosaur kids can dance with, that will play fetch with them, and can be taken for walks with an electronic leash.

The MiPosaur is equipped with GestureSense™ Technology that allows you to control the movements of your pet robot with the swipe of a hand.  Your MiPosaur will respond to 10 different hand commands ranging from moving right or left following your gestures to acting frightened if you cover its eyes.  Yank its tail though and you'll see an aggressive side as it rolls around to chase you down.  Push your hands toward it and the MiPosuar will sit back and the clap of your hands will have it pop back up on its feet.

There is also an app that you can download for free as part of your purchase price of this toy.  The app will let you drive the MiPosaur around like a remote control car, play BattleMode games where you can challenge another MiPosaur or a WowWee MiP robot in gladiatorial combat, or feed your dinosaur different variations of food to alter its mood.  The MiPosaur's mood will change in relationship to how you interact with it either being curious, excited, and annoyed.  It will react differently to commands from gestures, the app and the included TrackBall depending on what it's mood is.  Here's a tip, Fetch likes to be petted and given snacks after it follows a command or does a trick to keep it curious and excited.

My kids favorite way to interact with their MiPosaur, which they have names "Fetch" is to use the TrackBall.  Your robotic dinosaur will follow commands from how you move the TrackBall around and which of its 6 mode settings it is set on.  My children really like to play fetch with their MiPosaur which is "Ball Mode"-- roll the TrackBall around a room and the robotic dinosaur will chase after it.  "Leash Mode" is also really fun which when activated will have your MiPosaur follow you around as if you were taking it for a walk on a leash.

My daughter just loves though more than anything else dancing with Fetch in "Dance Mode".  MiPosaur really has some great speakers projecting sound effects and music.  The music my daughter and Fetch are dancing to in this video is being emitted from the toy.

Other play modes you can set on the TrackBall include "TeddyBear Mode" where the ball becomes the robot's favorite toy, "Food Mode" where you can reward your MiPosaur with a treat to keep it in a positive mood, and "BeatBox Mode" where when it gets close to the TrackBall the dinosaur will begin to beat box. To change the modes on the TrackBall you just spin this dial on it around to the corresponding labels to activate.

My kids have really enjoyed playing with Fetch so this toy absolutely gets A Geek Daddy nod of approval because of its fun factor and also because we haven't had any technical difficulties with it.  Every parent knows electronic toys can really be hit or miss on how well they work and hold up to child play.  MiPosaur has performed extraordinarily well from our family's experience.

The only knock on the product is that it requires 4 AA batteries for the robotic dinosaur and 4 AAA batteries for the TrackBall which needed to be replaced after a couple days of intensive play.  A nice feature though is that the app does show you a power meter for your batteries so you know exactly how much of a charge you have left with the toy's batteries.  Before buying you should also know this is an "indoor only" toy not because of durability but rather due to the sensor technology used by the toy.  The impressive interaction abilities and treats that WowWee's sensors provide though more than makes up for the lack of being able to play outside with this toy. We also found that MiPosaur worked equally well on carpet, tile and hard wood floors.

Our Hike With The Dinosaurs

All my nieces and nephews who are around the same age as my kids were in town over the Fourth of July weekend so we decided to take them all over to the Detroit Zoo to go for a hike through the dinosaur exhibit.  No not real dinosaurs or a display of fossils but rather through a 5 acre trail lined with lifelike animatronic prehistoric creatures.

The DINOSAURIA exhibit is open through Labor Day from 9:30 to 5pm (until 8pm on Wednesday nights) and you need to purchase tickets for an additional expense beyond the price of admission to the zoo to be able to hike with the dinosaurs.  You can purchase Dinosauria tickets at the zoo entrance or at the exhibit itself for $5 per person for anyone older than 2 years old.  Though if you have an annual zoo membership and ask at the Members Entrance you can purchase a four pack of Dinosauria tickets for $12 letting you get a slight discount so you'd be paying $3 per person.  Hey it adds up that discount ended up saving us $24 dollars for our our group that day.

Walk through the fossilized remains of a dinosaur and through the mists of time to find yourself transported back to prehistoric times.  The mist is actually water so be prepared to get a little wet as you venture through the dinosaur rib cage plus watch your step as it can be muddy and slippery in some spots.

The dinosaurs are created by Billings Productions which has created a niche for themselves in producing high quality aninmatronic dinosaurs and marketing them to zoos across the country to provide an enhanced experience for their visitors plus some extra revenue generation for the parks hosting the displays. CLICK HERE for a list of zoos that host displays featuring Billings Productions dinosaurs to see if there is one near you.  The company also produces a line of giant bug animatronics that I haven't personally seen myself but look really impressive on their website that you may also want to keep an eye out for when visiting a zoo or theme park hosting a Billings Productions display.

My kids love the movie WALKING WITH DINOSAURS so were thrilled to see a realistic looking Pachyrhinosaurus with babies standing right in front of them.

They also had a blast running around the trail discovering new dinosaurs around every twist and curve of the path.  WARNING! Two things to watch out for! First, two of the dinosaurs spit at you. I'm not going to say which ones so you'll enjoy being surprised if you visit but my nephew wasn't paying attention and got blasted right in the face.  He was fine but really embarrassed.  Secondly, there is a somewhat explicit scene of a predator eating its kill.  As the kids ran up on that scene in front of our group of adults in the group we didn't have a chance to screen them for that.  The kids weren't phased at all though and seemed to understand that animals get eaten in the wild.  My nephew blurted out it was like seeing a lion eating a gazelle.  So it obviously wasn't a big deal for our family but I understand it could be for others so I thought I'd give it a mention.

If you want to expand upon the educational aspect of your visit, there is also an augmented reality app you can download and use on your smart phone while hiking with the dinosaurs.  It is available for Android and Apple devices and takes about 5 to 7 minutes to download so you may want to load it onto your phone before you head over to the zoo.  When you arrive at the dinosaur exhibit open the app and in the drop down menu look at the specific zoo you are visiting and select that location.  Then using the camera on your phone zoom in on the various informational signs posted around the exhibit.  Wow! virtual dinosaurs will appear on your phone's screen through the augmented reality app that you can interact with.  The app also provides you additional information on the dinosaurs to help you turn this entertaining experience into an expanded educational opportunity.

I have to say that the dinosaurs created by Billings Productions are impressive.  The adults and children alike in our group had a fun and enjoyable time during our hike with the dinosaurs. From a parenting perspective the scariest thing I wanted to run away from during our visit was the gift shop you are dumped into at the end of the trail which results in children swarming you yelling out "gimme gimme" and grasping at you for your wallet. Oh the horror!

Seriously though younger children may be frightened by the shear size of the dinosaurs ... and their teeth ... that also roar at you, but we had a 3 year old, 4 year old, two 6 year olds and a 7 year old in our group and none of them were scared of anything we saw during our visit.  Speaking of teeth I wonder if it is ok to feed a dinosaur a twinkie?

Because it combines entertaining and educational elements to promote an interest in learning, the Detroit Zoo's Dinosauria gets A Geek Daddy nod of approval.  Plus those dinosaur robots are just darn cool!

Oh and the baby dinosaurs are pretty adorable too!

Check Out JURASSIC WORLD Through its Park Cams Before the June Opening

Can't wait to check out the JURASSIC WORLD theme park?  You may want to visit its official website that is full of information including a map of  Isla Nublar, the day's temperature on the island, the current attendance, attraction overviews, and trivia.  It even has " live park cam" feeds so you can get a first hand behind the scenes look at staff mucking out dinosaur pens, eggs getting ready to crack open in the hatchery, staff working in the creation lab, or how long the line is to ride the gyrosphere from your PC or mobile device.  It really is a great website chock-full of information about the theme park and the dinosaurs on exhibit.

If you want to always be at the front of the line and get exclusive first access to news about JURASSIC WORLD or updates to the website before they are unlocked to the public sign up for a RAPTOR PASS. Provide your name and e-mail to be sent special alerts about JURASSIC WORLD and you'll be included in the VIP list of fans who gets details first.  Hey all I needed to know was that Jurassic World has its own Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville to be sold that this is my kinda place!

While unfortunately we can't visit a real dinosaur theme park, JURASSIC WORLD will be opening to the public on movie screens at theaters across the United States on June 12, 2015.

They've really done a top-notch job with the movie's website that provides an authentic feel of an amusement park.  I encourage you to check it out before going to see the movie because it really does provide you a nice orientation of the scenery and helps set up the plot so you can dive right into the adventure...just don't dive into the Mosasaurus pool.

You are going to see the movie?!  I've been a fan of these dinosaur movies since I first saw the rippling water glass scene introducing the T-Rex in Jurassic Park. So you know I'll be going to the theater to see Jurassic World because you really need to watch a movie about dinosaurs on a "big" screen.  This seems like a perfect movie for an IMAX experience.  So bring on the T-Rex, Indominus Rex, and Velociraptors.  It will be an interesting twist in this movie that I'll be looking out for as it appears the villainous raptors may be playing the part of heroes in this chapter of the Jurassic movie saga.
