We regularly go through our bedroom closets and dressers at the beginning of each summer to weed out clothing items that are in good condition but don't fit or just aren't worn anymore for our family to donate to the local Salvation Army thrift stores.  I just dropped off our annual summer donation of unused clothing and household items to The Salvation Army the other day.  It is a win-win-win deal when donating items to The Salvation Army thrift stores because it provides a tax donation to the donor, recycles unwanted items so they don't end up in landfills, and supports a good cause -- The Salvation Army Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Center.

From May 19-25, Comcast customers can browse the virtual aisles of the Xfinity Digital Store and stock up on a collection of the best and newest kids’ releases at discounted sale prices.  Headlining this sale will be a special SpongeBob Squarepants promotion.  Beginning Tuesday, May 19th, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, will be available to own through Xfinity On Demand two weeks before it is released on blu-ray & dvd plus during this Summer Kids Sale both this film and the original Spongebob Squarepants Movie can be purchased as a high definition HD digital download combo for the price of one at $19.99.

Xfinity customers who have children watching television should also check out the Kids Zone. When in Kids Zone, children can browse all on their own, selecting live programming, free Xfinity On Demand content, movies and TV shows purchased through the Xfinity Digital Store, as well as any saved programming on your Comcast DVR — all of which has either been flagged by the network or studio as kids programming, or deemed age-appropriate for kids 12 and under by the great folks at Common Sense Media.  Additionally, while in Kids Zone, children can quickly find recently-watched programming, browse by their favorite network and even sort by their favorite theme such as "superheroes," "princesses" or "talking animals."

What is specifically nice about Kids Zone is that parents can lock the television down so that children can't leave this mode and flip through the rest of the Xfinity channel and OnDemand offerings without a parental control pin code being entered.  No more worrying about some unauthorized movie rentals or purchases showing up on your bill or your kids being too scared to go to bed because they caught a glimpse of The Walking Dead while flipping through the channels.  Parents can also filter the programming within Kids Zone to specific age ranges.  So if you don't want your child 4 year old watching episodes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Monsters High just yet you can just allow then to view just programming that has been tagged preschool appropriate.  Parents can set programming to specifically cater to the following age groups:  2-4, 5-7, 8-9 and 10-12 years old.  With my having 6 year old twins that 5-7 year old category fits in really nicely for our family.

Get a Dynamite Comic Book Deal on Groupees

I've been a fan of the offerings of comic book publisher Dynamite for a few years now because they take pulp fiction and retro stories like Battlestar Galactica, Flash Gordan, The Green Hornet, John Carter: Warlord of Mars, The Lone Ranger, The Six Million Dollar Man and Sherlock Holmes portraying them in updated adventures for modern audiences to enjoy while maintaining many of their classic elements.  Dynamite is offering for a limited time a digital deal on the website Groupees that will allow purchasers to sample a large number of their comic book series while also supporting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund with a percentage of the proceeds.

The Groupees web site is an alternate service similar to the Humble Bundles I've posted about several times before.  Instead of choosing your price though, consumers select how much they want to spend from designated levels of benefits.  20% of the purchase price in this Dynamite deal goes to the Comic Book Defense Fund.  Spend a minimum of $1 and you'll receive 34 comic books that include selections from Project Superpowers, The Spider, Sherlock Holmes, and Red Sonja.  Spend $5 or more and you will receive a selection of comic books from additional series that include Games of Thrones, Army of Darkness, Dresden Files, the Green Hornet, and Django/Zorro.  $10 will get you a variety of issues from Dreadstar, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, and Legenderry plus the Dynamite Art of Alex Ross picture book. Alex Ross has really become recognized as one of the best artists in the comic book industry so that book in itself makes this package worthwhile.  Additionally, for every 1,000 purchases, an additional bonus item is added to everyone's package.  Since most of the titles in this deal are ones I actually haven't read yet, I spent $10 to check them out and to show some support for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.  My $10 purchased 101 digital comic book issues that normally cost from .99 cents to $3.99 each.  For example to demonstrate the savings, Kevin Smith's Green Hornet digital issues included in my Groupee deal on the Comixology website/app are priced at $1.99 each which would have cost me $20 just for those 10 issues if I bought them there.

Since 1986, when Michael Correa, the store manager for a Lansing, Illinois comic book shop called FRIENDLY FRANK'S was arrested for the possession and sale of comic books as obscene material, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) has provided legal assistance to protect the First Amendment rights of the readers, creators, retailers, publishers, and librarians of comic books, manga, and graphic novels.  Twenty-eight years later the CBLDF is still tackling censorship issues and standing up for First Amendment rights, including its recent efforts to have a Utah law that censored Internet speech and a California law that eliminated First Amendment protections for violent images declared unconstitutional by Federal Courts. In additional to legal advocacy, the CBLDF also provides educational outreach regarding citizens rights in regard to the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. The digital comic books are stored on your Groupee website profile and can be downloaded from there to your PC in DRM-free files which means that you don't have to view them through a particular website or app like Comixology; but you'll need a good unzip program, like Express Reader, and a pdf reader compatible with your phone, tablet or whatever device you wish to read with to access and enjoy the comics. You can also use Torrents to access your digital files from Groupee.
