I had the chance to goof around with Mim-Mim from the popular Disney Jr. cable network television show KATE & MIM-MIM this summer and have to say that bunny is sure a lot of fun to hang out with. Of course anyone who has seen this animated show for preschoolers that focuses on the friendship and adventures of a 5 year old girl named Kate and her favorite stuffed animal, a plush bunny named Mim-Mim already knows that. In the show, Kate and Mim-Mim travel to the land of Mimiloo for imaginary adventures where they are joined by magical friends that live in this land of make believe named Lily, Tack and Gobble. If you haven't seen Kate & Mim-Mim yet now is a chance to catch up on some of their past escapades which are being released on a new DVD coming out September 20, 2016. "THE MIMILOO ZOO" DVD will feature six fun filled tales plus a bonus video called "Mimiloo's Creatures."
In the story "The Mimiloo Zoo," Kate's trip to the zoo gets canceled because it's raining, so it's off to the fantasy world of Mimiloo! In Mimiloo, animals made out of bushes are being created for Gobble and Tack's AMAZING new fruit garden inside their AMAZING new hedge maze. When Mim-Mim accidently spritzes the animals twice with Gobble's powerful presto potion, they come to life and things quickly get wild. With the animals creating a bit of havoc, the gang needs to fnd a place for them to live and Kate knows the perfect location.
The DVD also features the story "Lily and the Unicorn." Lily has always wanted to see a unicorn, and now is the perfect time as beautiful shimmer flowers, which unicorns love to eat, are blooming. After searching all day, the gang finally locates a whole garden of flowers. When the garden starts to float away, with Lily, who can save her?
Additional stories included on "The Mimiloo Zoo" DVD include, To Catch a Critter, Follow the Leader, Kate's Turtle Drive, and Kittens & Mittens. The DVD run time is approximately 65 minutes. You can order the DVD online from Shop PBS or look for it at retail locations across the United States. For more information about this television series and its characters, visit kateandmimmim.com

Nickelodeon continuing popular animated series THE LOUD HOUSE for a second season
After its hugely successful first season debut in May which saw THE LOUD HOUSE dominate ratings as the #1 animated kids' show on television, it didn't take long for Nickelodeon to announce that it was renewing the series for a 14-episode second season. THE LOUD HOUSE provides a humorous inside look at what it takes to survive the chaos of growing up in a huge family by following the lives of Lincoln Loud and his 10 sisters. The series debuted on Monday, May 2, 2016 at 5:00 pm (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon and has quickly garnered a large following on the cable network. THE LOUD HOUSE is inspired by creator and executive producer Chris Savino's life growing up in a family of 10 kids.
In season two of THE LOUD HOUSE, Lincoln remains the man with the plan as he navigates through the chaos of living in a family with 11 kids. The upcoming season that is scheduled to arrive this Fall will dive deeper into the unique personalities of Lincoln's sisters as well as feature a spooky themed Halloween episode. If you haven't seen any of season one's shows yet, Nickelodeon has a few of the full length episodes available to view at your convenience on its website.
THE LOUD HOUSE is based on an animated short of the same name that was created by Chris Savino for Nickelodeon's annual Animated Shorts Program. It is the first TV series to be greenlit from that global program which is designed to cultivate a new generation of creative talent for the cable network. THE LOUD HOUSE is being produced at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, California.

TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE
Transformers, the toy series from Hasbro in which vehicles switch into robotic alien warriors, had a cartoon that was popular with all the neighborhood kids that aired on TV during my 1980s childhood years. These robots in disguise have made a comeback to entertain today's generation of kids with a new animated television series. In these adventures from Hasbro Studios, BUMBLEBEE, one of the most popular Transformer characters from the toys and movies, must lead a rogue team of AUTOBOTS to ward off a new threat to the Earth from the dastardly DECEPTICONS. The 26 episode season of Season One for TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE just wrapped up on Cartoon Network.
Miss the first season on Cartoon Network or want to watch it all over again? Shout! Factory has just released a DVD with all 26 episodes of TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE which also has bonus segments including a San Diego Comic-Con Panel presentation, featurettes, and animated shorts. You can find the DVD for purchase at retailers such as Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart as well as on the Shout! Factory website. A Geek Daddy also has a TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE -- SEASON ONE DVD to giveaway to one lucky blog reader or social media follower.
To be eligible for this giveaway you must follow @Geekdad248 on Twitter and retweet our original contest tweet embedded above before May 22, 2016 @ 11:59 pm EST. Must be a US resident over the age of 18 to participate. One entry per person and we'll randomly select a winner from all eligible entries.
UPDATE: Congrats to Deb from St. Paul, MN who won the dvd giveaway.
When a CYBERTRONIAN prison ship filled with DECEPTICONS crash lands on Earth and unleashes its prisoners, BUMBLEBEE returns to the planet he once called home with a new team of AUTOBOTS - STRONGARM, SIDESWIPE, FIXIT and GRIMLOCK - to track down the escapees. BUMBLEBEE must balance his job of fighting off evil with being equal parts squad leader and coach to a rascally team that needs constant coaxing to learn how to work together. The results are comical when the cool rebel SIDESWIPE, elite guard cadet STRONGARM, bombastic dinobot GRIMLOCK and the overly-excited FIXIT must balance keeping the team together with chasing and capturing their new enemies in each adventure-filled episode. Along with their new human allies, Denny and Russell, this unlikely team of robots in disguise must protect the Earth while preparing for an ominous threat suited only for a Prime.

The Future of Star Trek Television Shows is Online
2016 will be the 50th anniversary of the television show which aimed "to boldly go where no man has gone before" when STAR TREK debuted on September 8, 1966. It will also mark eleven years since Enterprise was cancelled in 2001 ending an 18-year run of back-to-back Star Trek television series that began with the revitalization of the brand in 1987 with The Next Generation. For me these television shows cultivated my interest in science fiction which had been initiated by my enjoyment of Star Wars movies and now faced a void of new content to keep my interest following the culmination of the original trilogy of movies with Return of the Jedi in 1983. During my high school and college years, Star Trek played a key part in maintaining and developing my appreciation of the Sci-Fi genre. I would absolutely not be the fan of science fiction that I am today if it wasn't for the 18 year run of Star Trek shows on TV.
Yes there are the new Star Trek motion pictures to enjoy every few years, but the television series were a regular gateway that viewers could depend on each week to transport them to faraway worlds and include them in fantasy adventures. That regular connection to the franchise is lacking for today's fans. Aspiring screen writer and entertainment producer Sky Conway is trying to change that though by creating an independent, fan-funded and supported Internet television series. Conway has teamed up with Star Trek alumni Walter Koenig (Chekov in the original Star Trek television series) and Tim Russ (Tuvok in the Voyager TV show) to create a pilot episode for an online series called Star Trek: Renegades.
Directed by Russ, Star Trek: Renegades is set a decade after the conclusion of the Voyager series (1995-2001) focusing on a team of fugitives who are on the run from the Federation while secretly working for the head of Starfleet's Intelligence Division, Admiral Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) and his adviser a Vulcan named Tuvok (Tim Russ) to root out internal corruption and external threats. This crew of rogues, outcasts, and criminals is led by Lexxa Singh (Adrienne Wilkinson), a descendant of the Star Trek franchise's greatest villain Kahn Noonan Singh (Star Trek II: Wrath of Kahn / Star Trek: Into Darkness ), who has genetically engineered superhuman abilities and is disdained by the Federation and Star Fleet because of her heritage. In addition to Koenig and Russ, there are a bunch of familiar faces appearing in Star Trek: Renegades including Gary Graham ( Alien Nation / Star Trek Enterprise), Corin Nemec (Stargate SG-1, Parker Lewis Can't Lose), Robert Picardo (Star Trek Voyager / Star Trek First Contact / Stargate SG-1 ), Richard Herd (Seinfeld / SeaQuest 2032 / Star Trek Voyager), Robert Jefferson Jr. (Battlestar Galactica) and Manu Intiraymi (Star Trek Voyager).
While this online pilot episode doesn't have the polish of a big budget studio production, it is rather well done and enjoyable to watch. There are some great space ship renderings and battle scenes in Star Trek: Renegades that are actually pretty impressive to view and could match up with scenes you may see on a broadcast television network or in a big budget movie. Of course there are also some cheesy scenes, special effects, and plot elements like when a Klingon is vaporized and the "portals" that can cause the impending doom of any planet where a bigger budget may have made a difference in improving the show.
Star Trek: Renegades is FREE to watch on YouTube. Check it out!
Bases upon the positive response to Star Trek: Renegades, Conway, Russ and Koenig have a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of additional online episodes. The next two episode story arc promises to feature the final performance by Walter Koenig of the beloved Star Trek character Pavel Chekov. Also some new Star Trek alumni are joining the cast of Renegades, Terry Farrell (Deep Space Nine), Robert Beltran (Voyager), Aron Eisenberg (Deep Space Nine) and Hana Hatae (Next Generation).
Just as Star Trek: Renegades is starting to take off, CBS Television Studios recently announced that it will be launching a brand new television series in January 2017. Like Star Trek: Renegades this new show is departing from the traditional television broadcasting of the series and will have an online focus too. While CBS' new yet to be named Star Trek series will blast off with a special TV broadcast of its premiere episode, subsequent episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States through CBS All Access, the network's digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service. CBS All Access charges $5.99 per month to access online content from CBS's current and past seasons on demand plus allows subscribers to stream their local CBS television stations live. That current monthly subscription rate includes access to every episode of all the previous Star Trek television series. The new Star Trek series will be the first series developed specifically for CBS' online service that can be accessed by smart TVs, computers, tablets, phones, and other streaming devices like Roku and Chromecast.
So it appears the future of Star Trek may not be in outer space but rather in the Cloud. Television viewing as we know it is changing and it appears Star Trek is leading the way transitioning from over-air and cable broadcasting to online streaming. While I don't know what the future of the Star Trek franchise holds for its fans, I do know that the place fans will be going to enjoy it will be online.

Free Comic Book Promotes Debut of Netflix's "Jessica Jones" Television Series
Following the success of its television adaption of the comic book Daredevil, Netflix is giving another Marvel character a series. Jessica Jones will premiere with 13 episodes on November 20, 2015. To help promote the debut of this new series on Netflix, Marvel has released a FREE digital comic book on Comixology that people can download which provides an overview of the show's main character and how she will be portrayed on TV.
The premise of the show is that after a tragic ending to a short-lived super hero stint, Jessica Jones is rebuilding her life as a private investigator who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City. In the show, she will be working out of Hell's Kitchen (Daredevil's stomping grounds) and working with Luke Cage (who is the lead character of Netflix's planned third television series focusing on the Marvel comic book universe which is set to be released in 2016). Jessica Jones was originally the lead character in a 28-issue comic book series called Alias created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos that ran from 2001 to 2004. Alias won the Comic Buyers Guide award for "Favorite Comic Series" in 2003, and the Harvey Award for "Best New Series" in 2002. It was also nominated for two Eisner Awards ( the Oscar of the comic book industry) in 2004 for "Best Continuing Series" and "Best Serialized Story."
Alias was produced by an imprint of Marvel called Max Comics that specialized in R-rated comic books that were filled with graphic violent scenes, mature themes and sexual context. Jessica Jones is based off of the Alias comic book series and will present a darker and edgier version of the Marvel Universe than has previously been portray on television or in the movies. Jessica Jones will feature Krysten Ritter as the title character, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, and David Tennant as Zebediah Kilgrave. Kilgrave who has the power to take over other people's thoughts and actions will be an overarching villain in the series and is tied to how Jessica Jones gave up her super hero identity of Jewel and why she now suffers from alcoholism and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).
In the free comic book by Bendis and Gaydos -- the original creative team behind Alias -- Jessica Jones has been tasked to hunt down a dead beat dad and finds him laid up in a hospital bed after the thug has had a run in with Daredevil. The way the private investigator handles the situation demonstrates that she clearly has no problem with a Hell's Kitchen style of justice approach to her job. This comic book is a nice starting off point for beginning to view the Jessica Jones series when all the episodes become available for streaming on November 20th. Debuting on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at Noon (E.T.) will be a brand new 1/2 hour weekly series for the Nickelodeon cable channel which follows two junior high students, Marinette and Adrien, who must juggle their secret identities as the superheroes Ladybug and Cat Noir with the crazy antics of normal teen life. There will be weekly new baddies deployed by the villainous Hawk Moth who are out to steal the hero's powers as part of his evil genius plan to take over the world. Nickelodeon promises that this 3D CGI-animated sitcom will have storylines and adventures that are rich with friends, family, fun, secret identities, transformations, villains, fashion, creativity and plenty of super hero action all within the spectacular backdrop of Paris, France.

Marvel Provides a First Look at New Darth Vader Comic Book Series
Beginning in February 2015, Marvel Comics will begin publishing a monthly serial titled Darth Vader. The Dark Lord of the Sith will be featured in his own ongoing series which begins at the ending of Star Wars: A New Hope ( aka Episode III, aka the original Star Wars movie) and will focus on the war with the Rebel Alliance from the Empire's perspective.
I'd been excited about Marvel Comics new Star Wars series until I recently saw that the first issues were priced at $4.99. Buying these comics at $5 a pop on a regular basis was a prospect I was having some second thoughts about. Fortunately, I found out that the issues will be regularly priced at $3.99 which while that is still somewhat pricey it is the current industry average for a comic book. The reason for the price increase I noticed was that Issue #1 for both the new Star Wars and Darth Vaders series will be 48 pages while subsequent issues will be $3.99 for 32 pages. For Darth Vader's launch in February it also appears that both Issue #1 and #2 will both be published that month to kick off the title.
Marvel recently announced that the Darth Vader series will be written by Kieron Gillen and its artwork will be by Salvador Larroca. They also posted for fans the image below along with a gallery of artwork from the Darth Vader series on Marvel.com. CLICK HERE to view the full gallery.

Watch Disney's Star Wars Rebels for FREE on iTunes
Disney debuted the newest edition to the Star Wars saga when it aired a one hour special last week on Disney Channel titled "Sparks of Rebellion" to launch its new animated television show titled REBELS. Half-hour episodes of Rebels will then begin airing on the Disney XD cable channel each week on Mondays at 9pm ET/PT beginning October 13th. Can't wait until October 13th to watch the show's first new episode "Droids in Distress" or don't have access to Disney XD on your cable lineup? Then you may want to visit iTunes which is providing FREE downloads of "Droids in Distress" for a limited time to promote Star Wars: Rebels and its iTunes season download passes that are being sold for $29.99. For the time being though the price for the season's first episode is listed as FREE and you can download it at no charge.
Disney's Star Wars: Rebels television series is set 5 years before the original 1977 movie (Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope) and fourteen years after the defeat of the Jedi Order and creation of the Empire (Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith) in the Star Wars story timeline. The show focuses on the crew of a space freighter called the Ghost that has banded together to tackle the Empire in an effort to spark a rebellion against it. CLICK HERE for more details about Disney's Star Wars: Rebels from a previous A Geek Daddy blog post.
While this is a new television show it has many of the features that so many people love from the original trilogy of movies. There is a focus on the force as a mysterious power (rather than some midi-cholorian over explanation from the prequel movies) with one of the last Jedi taking on a new youthful and rambunctious apprentice; a beat up freighter akin to the Millennium Falcon; a quirky droid named Chopper similar to R2D2 but yet with its own unique personality; and lots of storm troopers and TIE fighters that are the images people most identify with when characterizing "the Empire." While Disney's Rebels takes a lot of cues from classic Star Wars cannon it also sets itself apart with new characters and locations. The crew of the Ghost isn't made up of established Star Wars characters but rather are all brand new creations to give the series its own unique identity and the principal villain isn't the figure that is often the face of the Star Wars franchise, Darth Vader, but rather the newly introduced Inquisitor.
Rebels succeeds where the prequel movies failed in that it embraces the heritage and elements of the original movies that my generation loved but still has enough new twists and angles to make it interesting to younger audiences. I watched the one hour Disney Channel movie with my children and we both enjoyed it but for different reasons. I enjoyed it for the sense of magic and unknown the show returned to the power of the force, the Ralph McQuarrie inspired touches that the artistic team added to the show, the John Williams Star Wars musical score and seeing TIE fighters and star destroyers flying across a screen again. Meanwhile my kids enjoyed the comedic elements of the show, loved the baby wookiee rescue scene, appreciated the rebellious youth character Ezra who they could relate to, and were excited to share in something with their dad they know I have a passion and appreciation for. This show did a nice job of bringing together two generations to mutually enjoy a science fiction space opera together. Disney has done a nice job with Star Wars: Rebels and this animated series get A Geek Daddy nod of approval.

New STAR WARS television show debuts in October
A brand new Star Wars animated television show titled Rebels will be debuting in October. Star Wars: Rebels is scheduled to premiere on October 3rd with a one hour special Star Wars: Rebels- Sparks of Rebellion on the Disney Channel. Half hour episodes will than routinely air on Monday nights each week on the cable channel Disney XD beginning on October 13th. The premise behind the tv series that is set 5 years before the original Star Wars move "A New Hope" is that a motley crew of a spaceship called the Ghost begins harassing the Empire in an effort to spark a rebellion.
Other characters in the show include:
Kanan Jarrus a survivor of the Empire's purge of the Jedi. After barely surviving Order 66 he went underground hiding in obscurity until discovered by the owner of the Ghost, Hera Syndulla. He is now the leader of the Ghost's crew doing his best to inflict harm against the power of the Empire.
Hera Syndulla is the Twi'lek owner and pilot of the Ghost.

Ezra Bridger is a 14 year old pickpocket and con artist who the crew of the Ghost find living on an Outer Rim world. Unknown to him one of the reasons he is able to get out of so many jams is that he is gifted with the ability to use the Force.
To help up the excitement for Rebels, Disney has released four short youtube videos to promote the excitement for this new series:
In “The Machine in the Ghost,” the
rebels’ Ghost starship is under attack by a wave of TIE fighters. Hera
pilots the craft, while Kanan tries to blast the Imperials from the
Ghost’s gunner. While they do evade and shoot down several TIEs, it’s up
to astromech droid Chopper to finish the job – even if he’s reluctant
to do so.
In “Art Attack,” Sabine sneaks into an
Imperial compound, looking to create a diversion for her friends aboard
the Ghost. Spotted by stormtroopers, she proves too quick to be
captured – and leaves behind an explosive surprise.
In “Entanglement,” Zeb fails to meet
with Kanan at a specified rendezvous point…and instead finds himself
joyfully battling many, many stormtroopers.

Alice Cooper Comic Book Debuts This Week
I never was much of a fan of Alice Cooper but had plenty of friends in high school and college who were into his music so I'm pretty familiar with the rocker. So I'm sending out this heads up to all those Alice Cooper fans out there that in addition to being a rocker, Cooper is also is joining the geek crowd this week with the release of his own comic book. Dynamite Comic's Alice Cooper #1 will be available to purchase on this week's new comic book day, Wednesday September 3, 2014. Hey and if you are a really big fan you can even purchase an autographed cover by Alice Cooper himself on this inaugural issue from Dynamite's website for $200. I'll pass myself, but I'm sure that is probably a tantalizing prospect for long-time fans of the "Prince of Darkness".
So what is this comic book about? Here's a summary courtesy of Dynamite Comics:
Rock n' Roll legend Alice Copper was never a stranger to the mystic and the macabre. His stage shows were the stuff of legend, featuring snakes, pyrotechnics, and the invocation of dark themes and darker forces. But while he was a legend in the waking world, few knew his role as "The Lord of Nightmares" beyond it, where he watched over us while we dreamed and delivered horrors unto the deserving. Only someone took it all away from him, cast him out of his realm and locked him away...until now. And if he's going to reclaim his dark throne, he's going to need all the help he can get!
Here's a preview of Alice Cooper's new on-going monthly series below. So what do you think?

It also happens to be Walter's first day on the job at the Walt Disney Studios lot after joining the Muppet Show cast. The first episode has been posted on youtube but the remaining 5 episodes will be exclusively viewable via the Disney Movies Anywhere website/app. I've embedded this first episode below and here's a synopsis of it:
After being left in charge of the Muppets office by Kermit, Pepe the King Prawn takes on the responsibility of "mentoring" Walter on the business of Hollywood. Still considered the "new guy" with the Muppets, Walter is given low-level jobs working alongside his fellow Muppets at their office in the famed Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. Walter quickly learns there is a lot more to making movies than he thought! Developing projects may not always be so glamorous, but Walter is still excited to tackle new challenges and discovers life on the Disney Lot is certainly a fun and funny adventure.
To watch the rest of these new Muppet shows, tune in every Friday at DisneyMoviesAnywhere.com throughout the month of August.

Nickelodeon misses the mark with new Dora reboot
I have to complement Nickelodeon for reaching out to me to discuss my recent post DORA GIVES BOOTS THE BOOT which was critical of the cable network's upcoming spinoff of Dora the Explorer. This new Dora & Friends television series will debut on Monday, August 18 @ 8pm on Nickelodeon. This new spin on the Dora character takes her away from the jungle and her animal friends to live in the fictional Latin American city of Playa Verde where she is now a tween going on urban adventures with a group of classmates. In my previous post which was based upon Nickelodeon's marketing of the show, I was critical of what appeared to be introducing themes to the program like fashion, make-overs, shopping and popularity that didn't seem appropriate to portray to an audience of preschoolers; but admitted that I hadn't seen the show yet to make any final judgments. Nickelodeon graciously sent me several episodes of Dora & Friends to view in advance of the series' August 18th premiere. After viewing the shows, I have to say that those issues mentioned in my original post aren't a concern to me now and really were not reflected in any of the episodes I viewed. That being said, I still believe that Nickelodeon really missed the mark with this television series. In trying to cater to both a preschool audience and older elementary school kids the final product isn't really suitable for either.
When the episodes of Dora & Friends arrived my wife and I screened them first to make sure they were content appropriate for our 5 year old twins to watch and we felt they were fine. Than we let the kids watch them to get their reaction. Our kids are at a unique age that for the last few years they have been enjoying the Dora the Explorer shows as preschoolers but are now entering kindergarten this fall and while they still enjoy Dora's adventures with Boots, Swiper and the gang I can foresee them getting a little old for those stories and characters soon. My wife and I felt that the new Dora & Friends episodes were of decent entertainment value for our kids but really didn't provide the structured educational elements that are of value to preschoolers that Dora the Explorer presented. Our kids aren't at the preschool age that the show is being marketed to but seem to be a better fit for the show than the audience it is target to.
Instead of educational programming, I'd categorize Dora & Friends as entertainment in the same category as the Disney Channel's popular shows Sophia the First and Doc McStuffins. Parents can trust these shows to have content that isn't violent or crude and feel comfortable with their children spending some time in front of the television watching them. They may include some life lessons but teaching isn't a principal element of the story telling. Trying to match Disney's creations with a revamped Dora is a worthy goal; but by trying to maintain the preschool elements of the original Dora the Explorer and combine them with a tween focused story that is more entertainment value than substance misses the marks for both of these ambitious objectives. In my opinion, Nickelodeon should have aimed the new Dora series for kindergarten and elementary school aged audiences as a step up from Dora the Explorer to maintain fan and parent loyalty with the brand as children aged out of the interest level for the original series.
Dora & Friends just doesn't seem to be a good fit for preschoolers but it has a number of preschool elements to detract from it being of interest to older children where it would probably be a better fit for their viewing. Nickelodeon in trying to persuade me that Dora & Friends was a good fit for preschoolers noted that the show was "tested with preschoolers", I guess my question is was it tested with preschoolers' parents? As I mentioned earlier, Dora & Friends is an entertaining show that I am sure preschoolers would be entertained by but it lacks the structured reinforced educational elements of Dora the Explorer that parents of preschoolers appreciate and that help preschoolers learn.
The following is a synopsis and some critiques of one of the episodes of Dora & Friends my family watched together titled "Doggie Day"
While trying to shoot a video to help her friend Alana promote the animal shelter's Doggie Adoption Day, Dora's video camera mysteriously becomes enchanted. When she points her magic camera at one of the shelter's dogs, Cusco, he breaks out in a song about being separated from his brothers. Dora and Pablo head out to help Cusco reunite with his family.
Once again I'll point out that this new show doesn't have the structure of the original Dora. There is no map that the audience follows throughout the show to know exactly what is going on. The show does incorporate a map app on Dora's smart phone but it isn't as detailed as in the Explorer series and I wonder how appropriate is it to be introducing the necessity of technology as an issue for preschoolers. My wife and I go out of our way to balance our kids use of tech so they are also playing outdoors and reading books instead of playing on the ipad or watching tv all day. I really don't want my 5 year olds asking for a smart phone because Dora has one...which has happened since they watched these episodes of Dora & Friends.
I appreciate Spanish language being included in this series, but it really isn't that helpful compared to the original Dora. In Dora the Explorer she would say what a Spanish word meant in English and encourage the audience to use it in the right context along with her. In Dora & Friends they just start talking or singing in Spanish with no explanation of what they are saying in English. This is fine if your family speaks Spanish but if not this really leaves you in a lurch. Since Dora is an ambassador of latino culture to many non-Spanish speaking families this really seems a detraction from that role.
While the show is lacking in the formal educational elements it also missed out on some informal teachable moments. For example, the kids run across a city street without looking for cars before crossing. It could have been a nice teachable moment for them to remind their audience that you always need to stop and look before crossing a street. The show also featured a maze where the characters try to find their way out of a temple by identifying shapes as they progress and the audience helps them pick which way to go by answering questions. This part of the show was too short not providing the repetition that is important for preschool students but another problem was that my kindergarten aged children found it too simplistic.
Now I know I've pointed out a few negatives but there were some positives to the "Doggie Day" episode as well. It had a nice message regarding taking care of your pets and finding homes for strays and abandoned animals. There was a funny scene where a pack of cats chased a puppy and Dora's friend around town that had my kids giggling. The show had a very catchy song with a nice theme called "Together All For One."
By having entertaining stories aimed at a kindergarten and elementary school aged audience with educational elements aimed at preschoolers that show just doesn't work for either age group. My kids did seem to enjoy watching the show and told me they liked it when I asked them but when I offered to let them watch it again they responded no and asked if they could go play in the other room. Not the most glowing of endorsements.
Dora the Explorer really was an endearing part of my children's preschool years. We watched the shows on Nickelodeon together, took the DVDs on long vacation car rides, the kids have spent hours playing with the toy sets, and I've read numerous bed time stories from books featuring Dora, Swiper, Boots and the gang. In my opinion the original series contained numerous aspects that helped with the educational development of my children during their preschool years and entertained them while they learned. In regard to this new series, I would let my children at their current age watch Dora & Friends for its amusement or entertainment on a rainy day, when letting them watch tv as a treat, or if I need to distract them while getting some work or chores done around the house, but it wouldn't be for the educational value we felt the kids got from watching Dora the Explorer. If my children were a few years younger and just starting their preschool years, I wouldn't have them watch Dora & Friends even though that is the targeted age group for the show. That may be a little blunt but that is just my honest opinion.
Dora & Friends according to Nickelodeon will air 20 half-hour episodes in its first season featuring the iconic character Dora living in a city, attending school and at the center of a peer group that works together to give back to the community -- having both real life and magical adventures along the way. Created by Chris Gifford and Valerie Walsh Valdes (Dora the Explorer, Go, Diego Go!) the series will regularly air weekdays during the preschool block on Nickelodeon. The Dora the Explorer series, which after 14 years remains the most-watched preschool show on television, will continue to air as well. Nickelodeon has also teamed up with Fisher-Price to expand the Dora franchise with interactive dolls, playsets and accessories that will hit the market beginning in August. Additionally, Nickelodeon has signed more than 130 new licensees across apparel, publishing, home goods, electronics, and specialty categories with products set to launch this fall and into early 2015.
