It was a cold, snowy evening when we watched LONG WAY NORTH for a family movie night which was a fitting time to view this animated adventure about a young heroine's journey to the North Pole. This isn't your run of the mill kids movie though as this French movie imported to the United States by Shout! Factory has an artistic flair to it. The artwork is more reminiscent of classic Disney animated movies than the mainstream computer generated cartoons being produced today adding to the aura of the film's setting in Russia during the late 19th century. Long Way North's distinct visual presentation combined with a compelling coming of age story resulting it winning the Grand Prize at the Tokyo Animation Festival and earned it A Geek Daddy's recommendation to give it a view. Long Way North's story revolves around Sacha, a young girl from the Russian aristocracy during the days of Tsar rule. She has known nothing but comfort and privilege during her life, but faces uncertainty about the future as her parents have orchestrated an arranged marriage to help themselves move up the societal ladder of prominence. Sacha dreams of being an explorer like her grandfather, Oloukine, a renowned scientist who has gone missing during an expedition to reach the North Pole. Anguishing over the fate of her grandfather, Sacha defies her forced marriage and runs away to embark on a quest to find Oloukine and bring him home.
Does a spoiled young girl who has always had her every need met have the strength, courage and wits to travel from a comfortable home and find her grandfather's missing ship, the Davai, in the Arctic wilderness on her own? Through perseverance, hard work, and developing new friendships, Sacha gives it a good go in a physical and emotional journey. Is there a happy ending? Does she find Oloukine and help bring the crew of the Davai home? You'll have to watch Long Way North for yourself to find out!
Print out these activity sheets courtesy of my friends at Shout! Factory for some added educational and entertainment value for children during a family movie night watching Long Way North:

Make yourself some hot chocolate and enjoy SNOWTIME! for an enjoyable family movie night perfectly themed for a winter evening. Our family recently watched this animated movie together and my kids were giggling throughout. That was this silly romp turned very serious as it came to a conclusion. I won't give out any spoilers other than to say be prepared for an unexpectedly sad ending which while putting a damper on the laughs also provided an important message to my kids that people shouldn't get too carried away with things; plus need to be vigilant about being considerate and caring towards others. To amuse themselves during the winter school break, the kids in a small village decide to have a massive snowball fight. Luke and Sophie, both 11 years old, become the leaders of the opposing sides. Sophie and her cohorts defend an amazing elaborate snow fort against the assault of Luke's horde. Whichever side occupies the fort at the end of the winter break, wins! But what starts out as pure youthful fun and enthusiasm deteriorates into a more serious conflict. Can joy and peace be restored, or will the kids' friendships fall in a flurry of ice and snow.

We had a nice family movie night as our friends at Shout! Factory introduced us to one of Australia's most recognized characters, an adventurous koala named Blinky Bill, by sending us a copy of BLINKY BILL -- THE MOVIE before its official release on blu-ray and dvd. The Adventures of Blinky Bill is a beloved children's book series in Australia and he has also been featured in television series and movies Down Under. Now Shout! Factory is importing him to America with the blu-ray, dvd, and digital download release of BLINKY BILL -- THE MOVIE within the United States on October 11, 2016. Endorsed by the Dove Foundation as family friendly entertainment, BLINKY BILL-- THE MOVIE really is an enjoyable romp through the Outback featuring an entertaining ensemble of animated animal characters that children will adore including kangaroos, koalas, emus, frill-necked lizards, kookaburras, and a wombat who drives a wicked tricked out pickup truck. In addition to providing an exciting adventure story, the movie is also filled with important lessons on the importance of community, survival in harsh climate, the love between children and parents, and 'mateship' -- an Australian cultural idiom that embodies equality, loyalty, and friendship. Our family may not be that fond of Vegemite but after watching this movie we're now very big fans of another quintessential Australian favorite -- Blinky Bill.
To share my family's enjoyment of BLINKY BILL -- THE MOVIE, A Geek Daddy is giving away a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital to one one lucky winner. To be eligible for this giveaway you must follow

When Blinky discovers a mysterious marker that hints at his dad's whereabouts, he embarks on a journey that takes him beyond the boundary of Green Patch and into the wild and dangerous Outback. He quickly makes friends with Nutsy, a zoo koala, and Jacko, a nervous frill-necked lizard. Transformers, the toy series from Hasbro in which vehicles switch into robotic alien warriors, had a cartoon that was popular with all the neighborhood kids that aired on TV during my 1980s childhood years. These robots in disguise have made a comeback to entertain today's generation of kids with a new animated television series. In these adventures from Hasbro Studios, BUMBLEBEE, one of the most popular Transformer characters from the toys and movies, must lead a rogue team of AUTOBOTS to ward off a new threat to the Earth from the dastardly DECEPTICONS. The 26 episode season of Season One for TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE just wrapped up on Cartoon Network.
Miss the first season on Cartoon Network or want to watch it all over again? Shout! Factory has just released a DVD with all 26 episodes of TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE which also has bonus segments including a San Diego Comic-Con Panel presentation, featurettes, and animated shorts. You can find the DVD for purchase at retailers such as Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart as well as on the Shout! Factory website. A Geek Daddy also has a TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE -- SEASON ONE DVD to giveaway to one lucky blog reader or social media follower.

When a CYBERTRONIAN prison ship filled with DECEPTICONS crash lands on Earth and unleashes its prisoners, BUMBLEBEE returns to the planet he once called home with a new team of AUTOBOTS - STRONGARM, SIDESWIPE, FIXIT and GRIMLOCK - to track down the escapees. BUMBLEBEE must balance his job of fighting off evil with being equal parts squad leader and coach to a rascally team that needs constant coaxing to learn how to work together. The results are comical when the cool rebel SIDESWIPE, elite guard cadet STRONGARM, bombastic dinobot GRIMLOCK and the overly-excited FIXIT must balance keeping the team together with chasing and capturing their new enemies in each adventure-filled episode. Along with their new human allies, Denny and Russell, this unlikely team of robots in disguise must protect the Earth while preparing for an ominous threat suited only for a Prime.

If you are looking for a super hero themed story that isn't dominated by male characters than Miraculous Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir may be a show you want to check out. The adventures of teenage girl Marinette as the hero known as "Ladybug" provide for super fun in this animated TV series that has been wildly successful on Nickelodeon and is now being released on DVD beginning May 3, 2016 by Shout! Kids. Both my seven year old daughter and son really enjoy watching the Paris-based adventures of Ladybug and Cat Noir so A Geek Daddy is sharing my kids enjoyment of the show with a C'est Magnifique giveaway courtesy of Shout! Kids. We're giving away a Miraculous Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir DVD.

randomly select someone from all eligible entries to receive a Miraculous Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir DVD featuring the first seven episodes broadcast on Nickelodeon.
Marinette and Adrien, two seemingly normal kids live what appears to be an ordinary teen life. But when the evil Hawk Moth threatens their beloved city of Paris, they transform into the superheroes Ladybug and Cat Noir using super powers gained with the help of their magical friends. Hawk Moth is using his evil energy to transform normal people into super villains, so our two heroes need to use all their skills to defeat him.
Becoming Ladybug is a complicated process for Marinette. First, she needs a "Kwami" which is a tiny magical creature. She also needs a "Miraculous" which is a magical accessory. Combining the two transforms Marinette into a super hero, but her Ladybug powers only work for a limited time!
It is a good think that she gets a little help from her super hero sidekick, Cat Noir, even though she insists she doesn't need his help. If only she knew Cat Noir's true identity -- Adrien, her school crush. It will take a lot -- friendship, teamwork, and skill -- to outwit Hawk Moth. Will Ladybug & Cat Noir be able to balance their double lives and keep Paris safe? Will they ever find out each other's true identity? Until then there is a whole city of baddies to defeat...SPOTS ON, CLAWS OUT!
The Miraculous Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir DVD includes the television episodes "The Bubbler," "Mr. Pigeon," "Stormy Weather," "Timebreaker," "Copycat," "The Pharoah," and "Lady Wifi." It also contains bonus features including cast and crew interviews, episode animatics, and a sing-along. CLICK HERE for information on how you can purchase this Shout! Kids DVD.

** A Geek Daddy received the featured product for free. Opinions are my own**
I remember a big part of my after-school routine in elementary school was running as fast as I could from the bus stop to get home in time to see the Transformers cartoon series on tv. With dvds, digital downloads and streaming Internet videos, my kids are shocked to hear that if you missed a cartoon when it originally aired when I was their age you were pretty much out of luck to see it again until the summer reruns began. I was truly captivated each afternoon taking in the adventures of the heroic Optimus Prime and his band of mechanical Autobots tackling the dastardly exploits of the evil Megatron and his villainous army of Decepticon robots in this animated series that aired in 1985 and 1986. Hey what young boy wouldn't enjoy a television show about high-tech robots that can turn into cool vehicles who battle each other with laser guns and missiles!!!
Just as my own children are entering their elementary school years themselves, the Transformers are back in an all new animated series on Cartoon Network called Robots In Disguise. The war for control of the Earth has been over now for decades with the Autobots being victorious and the Transformers have returned to their metallic home planet of Cybatron. The fan favorite young gun from the original series, Bumblebee is now a veteran law enforcement officer on Cybatron supervising a young beat patrol cadet named StrongArm as they search to arrest a troublesome maverick named SideSwipe. Just as Bumblebee and StrongArm capture SideSwipe the whole trio gets sent back to Earth through a series of mishaps via a one-way interstellar gateway.
Bumblebee, StrongArm and SideSwipe arrive on Earth to find out that an Autobot spaceship transporting hundreds of the most dangerous Decepticons from Cybatron to a distant prison world has crash landed there. It's up to Bumblebee and his team to round up all these escaped prisoners and lock them up before they create too much havoc on the planet. Each episode will feature an encounter with a new Decepticon on the loose. Oh plus because the only thing cooler than a robot that turns into a cool car is one that turns into a dinosaur during their adventures, the Autobots pick up a Dinobot to join their team.
Don't worry if you missed the first few episodes of this new series as on October 20, 2015 Shout! Factory Kids, in collaboration with Hasbro Studios, released TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE - A NEW AUTOBOT MISSION on DVD which features the first five entertaining episodes of the new tv series and special behind-the-scenes bonus content. I watched this with my son and he was really thrilled by it. We've watched the DVD three times now in just the one week we've had it. You can order the DVD from Amazon and Walmart.
The DVD has a run-time of 110 minutes and features five action-packed TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE adventures:
Pilot, Part 1
Pilot, Part 2
Trust Exercises
More Than Meets the Eye
W.W.O.D.?
These cartoons feature a brand new anime inspired animation style that provides more of a focus on presenting human and animal characteristics of the Transfomers versus a focus on a robotic portrayal of them. My kids really liked this new style. The series also features the voice talents of Will Friedle (Boy Meets World), Darren Criss (Glee), Constance Zommer (Entourage), Khary Payton (Teen Titans Go!), and Mitchell Whitfield (TMNT) plus Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime in the 1980s Transformers cartoons and the live-action theatrical motion pictures, when the character makes a cameo appearance in this series.
The new mission begins as Bumblebee must step up to be leader in the years after we left the AUTOBOTS in
Transformers Prime. Summoned by Optimus Prime to save Earth from a new DECEPTICON threat,
Bumblebee puts his light-hearted mettle to the test after assembling a rouge team of
Autobots action heroes.
Bumblebee must balance his job fighting off evil with being equal
parts squad leader and coach to a rascally team that needs constant
coaxing to learn how to work together. The results are comical when the
cool rebel SIDESWIPE, elite guard cadet STRONGARM,
bombastic dinobot GRIMLOCK and overly-excited mini-con FIXIT must
balance keeping the team together with chasing and capturing their new
enemies in each adventure-filled episode.
The TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE series is currently airing on Cartoon Network in the U.S. and on Teletoon in Canada. If you're like me and have kids at home who are really into cool cars, dinosaurs, and high-tech robots you are going to want to roll out into action and pick up the start of this new chapter of the Autobots story on DVD.
