Thirty years after Mike Mignola created Hellboy, the legendary cartoonist is introducing readers to a brand new shared universe, created with frequent collaborator Ben Stenbeck, the writer/artist of the acclaimed series Our Bones Dust. In December, Dark Horse Comics will publish Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, an anthology of folklore-inspired fantasy stories written and illustrated by Mignola, colored by Dave Stewart, and lettered by Clem Robins. The book will be the first publication from Curious Objects, Mignola’s new imprint at Dark Horse and will set the stage for more weird, wicked, and whimsical stories in the “Lands Unknown” universe from Mignola and Stenbeck.
“It all started with an Italian Folktale about a boy who goes bowling with corpses,” Mignola commented to ageekdaddy.com. “I fell in love with the story as soon as I discovered it but I wanted to play fast and loose when adapting it, so I created a whole new world. Not TOO different than our world a few centuries ago, but with a lot more gods and monsters. Once I created that world new characters and stories just started pouring out of it. There is a whole lot to play with here and I expect to be at it for a very long time.”
In Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, the stories are fantastical, odd and charming — from a search for the beating heart of a long-dead sorcerer, to a pirate girl who makes a deal with the devil, to the titular boy who wins a grim prize in a game with undead interlopers. The graphic novel is a 112-page hardcover that will be released in bookstores on December 3, 2024 and in comic shops on December 4.
“For a few years now Mike has been emailing me designs and pages and ideas and maps and lists of place names for this world, and his enthusiasm for this project is indomitable and infectious,” remarked Stenbeck, who will be writing and drawing other, unannounced future Lands Unknown comics. “So often my reaction to these emails is ‘that's great Mike! But I still have two books to draw before I can even move on to this work!’ and then I find myself taking three days off to write a new story. Luckily Mike likes my stories. My first project is set far off in a distant corner of this world. That way I can't bump into anything Mike is doing and make a mess. Spoiler...it will have monsters in it.”

Today is National Superhero Day which for many at first thought probably brings fantasy characters like Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy to mind; but I wanted to take a moment to use this occasion to salute real life heroes ... the fire fighters in our world. As the name applies, this profession started out with a focus on keeping towns from burning to the ground (think the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 which destroyed more than 17,000 buildings and killed 300 people) and over the years has evolved so that fire fighters do much more than extinguish burning structures and wild fires. They are now first responders to HAZMAT situations, extract people from vehicle crashes, and provide emergency medical treatment in a variety of scenarios, among other responsibilities. Have you ever thought about how many different ways fire fighters contribute to making communities safe?
I really hadn't until being invited to participate in a day in the life experience which let me feel what it is like to be on-the-job as a firefighter. My day as a firefighter included a searching inside a smoke-filled building for people to be rescued, extinguishing a car fire, a jaws of life vehicle extraction, an active shooter paramedic scenario and addressing a mock HAZMAT threat. This movie geek was able to live out some real life fire fighter moments as if he was starring in the flick BURN. You don't realize until experiencing it how heavy the gear is and how quick on your feet you have to be both mentally and physically when it comes to this job until going through the same drills the pros do.
Let the firefighters in your community know you appreciate them on this National Superhero Day and throughout the year. Say thank you and express your appreciation for their service by giving your local department a positive shout out on social media. Are you following your local fire department on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter? Most of some sort of social media presence.
Remember, firefighting is a dangerous profession, with these men and women are putting their lives on the line in service to others. Let your local City Council representatives know you support your local government spending the resources to ensure these people who risk their lives are going into peril with the best tools and resources to accomplish their job. Firefighters need to have the ability to not only get the people they are rescuing out of danger, but also be able to return home to their own families as well when their mission has been accomplished.
Thanks again to the local departments that let me get a better understanding what is like to live a day in the life of a firefighter at my county's emergency training center.
NERF the toy brand known for foam dart weaponry and sports balls has just unleashed upon the world its first-ever mascot ... and it is a doozy. Murph from NERF is a towering monstrosity that looks like a sasquatch mated with a koosh ball. Mascots are supposed to be about fun and Murph is literally made out of what comes to front of mind when people think about NERF ... the foam darts that these toys are known for.
Hasbro, the parent company of NERF, will be utilizing Murph for a public relations campaign that encourages families to step away from their screens and get up and active with NERF to create memories that will last a lifetime. Can Murph encourage kids to step away from Fortnite for some backyard NERF battles? I hope so because people, my own kids included, really do need to get outside and get active more often ... and who doesn't love battling with friends and families with a bunch of NERF launchers? I know animated movies are supposed to be for kids, but I am really GEEKED to go see LIGHTYEAR! The trailer looks like this will be a fun, light-hearted sci-fi flick. And IMAX has gone all out to create a theatrical experience for the showing of this film that shouldn't be missed. I'm absolutely going to see this new Disney Pixar movie inspired by the Buzz Lightyear character from the Toy Story films on an IMAX screen.

Did you know Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind such blockbuster films as The Dark Knight trilogy, Jurassic World, Pacific Rim and Godzilla vs Kong, also has a comic book division? LEGENDARY COMICS has published comic books and graphic novels tied to movies the company has released as well as stand alone titles such as THE TOWER CHRONICLES and KRAMPUS. The newest release from LEGENDARY COMICS is a graphic novel titled ACURSIAN which brings a popular digital comic strip from WEBTOON to print.
While digital comics can be convenient to purchase and read there is just something about holding a printed edition in your hands and flipping through its pages that I really appreciate. So it was nice to pick up Legendary Comics graphic novel adaption of the WEBTOON supernatural adventure Acursian. This graphic novel stands out not just because of its origin as a web comic but also in that one of its co-authors had his image illustrated as the story's main character. That is why the title is promoted as starring John Barrowman.
Sci-fi and superhero tv show fans may be familiar with Scottish-American actor John Barrowman from his roles as Captain Jack Harness in BBC'sDoctor Who and Malcolm Merlyn in The CW Network'sArrowverse. He has teamed up with his English professor sister Carole to write a suspenseful Celtic themed thriller with drawings by artists Beni Lobel and Rubine portraying John in their artwork as the lead character Charlie Stewart. Celtic myth and Scottish magic intertwine with the modern world as Charlie Stewart unexpectedly learns that curses can be very real.
Charlie Stewart is leading a wonderful life with an amazing wife and successful career as a high powered attorney. It is his 40th birthday though and suddenly his life begins to unravel. He accidently splits his pants on his way to work, gets into a car crash that totals his vehicle, his wife starts acting crazy during a telephone call and he finds himself arrested for embezzlement upon arriving at his law office...and the day just gets worse from there!
This path of events sets him on a time-traveling journey set between 1745 and present day as he discovers his bloodline is cursed by the Celtic Gods based upon Charlie’s ancestor, Prince Charles Edward Stewart, breaking deal made with Bregon, the god of war. The Bonnie Prince had stolen three talismans from Bregon's sisters, the goddesses of fate and time, which he promised to return in exchange for the god of war's support Scotland's battle against England. The prince reneges on his pledge and until the talismans are returned, the three sisters can no longer control fate and time, but they can put a curse on Charles Edward Stewart and his descendants. The Stewart bloodline is now cursed to lose everything at the age of the Bonnie Prince's betrayal ... their 40th birthdays.
Now Charlie must find a way to reverse his misfortune and save his young son from a similar future. Can he find the missing talismans and if so who does he return them to? Bregon or his sisters? Will this break the curse? Or worse will restoring the power of fate and time to the gods alter life and destroy the world as we now know it? You'll have to read the graphic novel Acursian to find out!

My kids have been having a blast playing the new MOTO RACER 4 video game for XBOX ONE and PLAYSTATION 4. Video game publisher, Microids provided us with this arcade style motorcycle racing game to play and our whole family has really gotten into the competition of playing it for the bragging rights of being the MOTO RACER 4 champion! The video game allows players to choose to ride either dirt bikes or motorcycles in races through a variety of spectacular looking courses that also provide a variety of exciting competition modes to choose from. It really is a fun game to play! Plus very family-friendly as its controls are very simple and easy for children to use and the game doesn't contain any violence or mature content that parents would want to steer kids away from. It does contain features though that let you do some pretty cool jumps and tricks!

Make yourself some hot chocolate and enjoy SNOWTIME! for an enjoyable family movie night perfectly themed for a winter evening. Our family recently watched this animated movie together and my kids were giggling throughout. That was this silly romp turned very serious as it came to a conclusion. I won't give out any spoilers other than to say be prepared for an unexpectedly sad ending which while putting a damper on the laughs also provided an important message to my kids that people shouldn't get too carried away with things; plus need to be vigilant about being considerate and caring towards others. This movie will make your family laugh and cry but I promise you'll have a good time watching Snowtime!.

As a father I want my daughter to have limitless potential to excel at whatever goals she wants to pursue in life. Fortunately we live in a country where females can attain an education and have societal freedoms which don't restrict her ability to engage in the life she wants to lead. The ability to get an education is so important for opening opportunities for both professional and personal development, yet even in today's day and age more than 60 million girls are not able to attend school around the world because of societal restrictions or safety concerns. In my view that is unacceptable!
Ziauddin (Zia)Yousafzai believed in the merits of every female getting the same education as a male would get and opened a chain of schools that allowed girls to attend in rural Pakistan even though there was societal undertones against such things. Then the Taliban invaded their valley and things got worse. Yet Zia still encouraged his daughter Malala to attend school and stand up against repression. She began to blog against the societal restrictions against women dictated by the Taliban and advocate for girls to have the right to go to school. At the age of 11, Malala was writing a blog for the BBC detailing her life under Taliban occupation, their attempts to take control of the area where she lived, and promoting education for girls living in the Swat Valley. After a few years her public profile expanded from the blog to doing local, national, and international print and television interviews advocating for peace in her community and women's rights. Malala's advocacy began to get attention not just in her own community but throughout her country drawing the wraith of the Taliban upon her.
On October 9, 2012, while her father was out of town advocating for more local assistance from the Pakistani government against Taliban repression, 15 year old Malala boarded a bus after school to head home. A Taliban gunman boarded the bus, asked for Malala by name, then fired three shots at her. The attack left her in critical condition. She was eventually able to be be transported to England for treatment and after intensive rehabilitation has made an incredible recovery. In 2014, Malala was named as a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for her struggle against suppression and work in promoting the right of all children to get an education making her the youngest ever Nobel Prize laureate at 17 years old. With her family now permanently residing in the United Kingdom, Malala and Zia continue to advocate for access to a good education for every girl around the world.
Having just returned from the annual DAD 2.0 SUMMIT conference where more than 400 fathers from across the United States and Canada met to discuss the changing voice and perceptions of modern fatherhood, Malala's story reminded me that while there have been great gains over the last decade by men like Zia to promote equality for our daughters there is still so much more work to be done. A common denominator between conversations I have with other dads in my hometown and the fathers who attended the DAD 2.0 SUMMIT is a desire for our daughters to excel in school and use that education to achieve whatever personal and professional dreams they may have. I've noticed a growing trend in the last decade of more fathers across the U.S., U.K. and Canada becoming more active in the parenting responsibilities of family life and an uptick in stay-at-home dads being children's primary care-gives while their wives are working moms financially supporting the household. As gender roles and stereotypes continue to dissolve in the future, I believe that men will be more relatable to women having experienced a more in-depth relationship through the parenting of their daughters. This hopefully will lead to more opportunities for equality among the sexes when it comes to the freedoms of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just in the United State but across the globe. How do you think the role fathers play in raising and inspiring their children, as Zia did, has changed in the past decade? How do you think this role will continue to change?

Timed to the exclusive global broadcast television premiere of Academy Award® winner Davis Guggenheim's feature documentary HE NAMED ME MALALA on the National Geographic Channel, 21st Century Fox has committed to donating up to $50,000 in response to people standing #withMalala through social media.
From February 18 - March 10, 2016, 21st Century Fox will donate $1 to the Malala Fund for every tweet on Twitter using the hashtag #withMalala up to $50,000. Additionally, Facebook users can utilize a custom application that allows profile pictures to be transformed into a yearbook photo. The yearbook photo then adds animation that dissolves female users' photos from the page as a powerful metaphor that sheds light on the 60 million girls out of school worldwide and meant to further inspire people to learn about Malala's mission.
