MIRTH AND MISCHIEF AT UHUBURG CASTLE

uhuburg castle

During my elementary school years, you'd often find me with my nose in a book engrossed in reading tales about King Arthur, Prince Valient and the merry adventures of Robin Hood. Our local library had this wonderful reading room that was funded by the Rockefeller Foundation that made you feel like you were hanging out in a castle with its woodworking and a fireplace they kept lit from Fall through Spring which was the perfect spot for a kid to immerse himself in tales of chivalry and swordsmanship. Since those days, I've dreamed of one day traveling to Europe to explore the castles and locations where those stories were set.

Alas, I've yet to make that dream a reality. If you are like me and taking a trip to Europe to trek around castles isn't really that practical on your family budget, there is another option that is closer to home where you don't have to use a passport to travel outside the USA. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding the alpine town of Helen, Georgia is Uhuburg Castle, a legitimate reproduction of a European fortresses from days gone by.

travel geek

This Renaissance-style castle has twelve towers, one turret, three gatehouses, an eight story lookout tower, Great Hall, cloistered walls with rampart and lower walkways and two acres of courtyard gardens. The castle has spectacular views from each of the walls and towers of the breathtaking scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains around it. Based upon the Bavarian heritage of Helen, the structure takes its name from Uhu and Burg, the German words for Owl and Castle. Visitors can choose to spend a day touring the grounds or can spend the night at the castle's boutique hotel. Uhuburg Castle also hosts special events like Renaissance festivals throughout the year.

During the month of May this year, Uhuburg Castle will be featuring an immersive theatrical event on Friday and Saturday nights called Mirth & Mischief which features cirque-style acrobatics and cutting-edge video projections. Utilizing the ambiance of Uhuburg Castle, Mirth & Mischief will create a fantasy setting meant to fascinate and delight people. This is a ticketed event meant for ages 18+.

Head over to uhuburg.com to check out other events taking place at the castle throughout the year ranging from its CastleFaire Renaissance Festival to visits with Father Christmas at the castle. Would you be geeked to visit Uhuburg Castle? I know I would be!

HAUNTED PLACES OF CODY WYOMING

Cody Wyoming

Founded by Buffalo Bill Cody, the town of Cody in northwestern Wyoming serves as a gateway to Yellowstone National Park and epitomizes the spirit of the showman's Wild West shows. With Cody's Wild West atmosphere still alive welcoming Yellowstone tourists to the area, spirits of days gone by continue to linger through ghost stories and spooky landmarks. Fans of Halloween festivities and paranormal mysteries are sure to have their interest piqued by these haunted places in Cody, Wyoming:

Irma Hotel. One of the most recognizable buildings on Cody’s Sheridan Ave., the Irma hotel was built by Buffalo Bill Cody in 1902 and named for his daughter Irma. Irma and her husband Fred Garlow – manager of the hotel - both died tragically of the Spanish flu in October 1918. Irma was only 35 when she died, and Room 35 at the hotel is where there have been numerous reports of hauntings.

Irma Hotel

Among the occurrences guests of that room have reported: water in the bathroom turns on and off by itself, belongings are moved to different locations in the room, and artwork is found on the floor where it couldn’t have simply fallen from the picture hooks. There have also been reports of guests and staff seeing an apparition of a soldier in a cavalry uniform with a sword, but it is only the soldier’s bottom half that appears.

In another room, there have been reports of Irma herself in a rocking chair in the corner of a guest room. And servers in the dining room have reported seeing guests sitting in booths in the restaurant but finding no one there when they return to serve the guests. In that same dining room, there’s a photo - circa early 1900s - of a ghostly figure hanging out in the dining room surrounded by a few men at the bar, seemingly undaunted by the eerie extra in their group.

Irma Hotel Cody Wyoming

J.H. Vogel Building. Now the home of a thriving retail store called the Cowboy Palace, the J.H. Vogel Building is another place with a history of hauntings. When the building opened in 1912, proprietor J.H. Vogel and his wife made full use of every nook and cranny of the building by operating a furniture store in the front and a mortuary in the back. The two businesses were separated by just a curtain, so presumably furniture shoppers were occasionally distracted by the presence of sorrowful mourners paying their respects to their deceased loved ones. Several businesses have operated in the building over the years, and many of those business owners have reported seeing a ghostly boy in strange clothing roaming the aisles.

Halloween Ghost Stories

Cody Cemetery. There have also been reports of apparitions roaming around a field that was once a Cody cemetery. The graves in the cemetery were relocated in the 1960s because irrigation and heavy rains caused some of the coffins in shallow graves to rise to the surface. The effort to relocate the cemetery was only partially successful, and Cody locals have surmised that some of the graves were missed and bodies may still be buried beneath what is now just a field.

Mummy Cave. Just a short hike from the road north of the Shoshone River in Wapiti Valley, a Cody resident discovered a cave with the remains of a remarkably well-preserved, 1,200-year-old man that residents dubbed “Mummy Joe.” The discovery was remarkable for many reasons.

Cody Yellowstone

He was buried under a massive overhang of a high volcanic cliff more than 6,000 feet above sea level, which offered the perfect climate for long preservation. Joe, archaeologists have surmised, was a big-game hunter, because there were thousands of well-preserved animal bones – probably of bighorn sheep and deer – resting alongside Joe’s remains. There were also perishable materials like arrows, feathers, baskets, beads and nets. Mysteriously, the cave was occupied for many years after Mummy Joe died, which begs the question of why the residents of the cave didn’t move the mummified remains.

Smith Mansion. The Smith Mansion, which locals call “Crazy House,” is a rambling five-story structure perched on a hill on the south side of the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway. The structure was a built bit by bit by owner Lee Smith over many years. Smith and his wife raised two children there, and Smith continually worked on the house, adding architectural elements like seemingly random exterior staircases and containers made from metal scraps.

haunted houses

On a windy day in 1992, Lee was working on the upper floors without safety tethers. He fell from the roof and died. After that the family moved out and the house was left to slowly decay in the harsh elements. Some windy day, it may crumble to the ground. Until then, it sits, abandoned, on a lonely spot overlooking the highway.

Chamberlin Inn. This luxury boutique inn is one of Cody’s showplaces filled with impeccably appointed rooms. Named for the inn’s original proprietress, Agnes Chamberlin, a couple of the inn’s street-facing rooms once served as a dentist office where Agnes’s husband Mark used to practice. Although he called himself a dentist, there is no record of him ever having a license to practice. So presumably, he was practicing his trade on the un-numbed-up mouths of Cody locals whose agony it is said can sometimes be heard as screams murmuring in the wind. Just a little nugget that is good to know for visitors planning an overnight stay.

halloween

The Coffin School. Among the many preserved frontier buildings at Old Trail Town is The Coffin School. Built in 1884 at the W Bar Ranch on the Wood River, the building was indeed used as a school. But it was also the one-time cabin of frontiersman Alfred Nower. One day while hewing logs, Nower accidentally cut his legs. He returned to his cabin in hopes of recovery, but he eventually died of gangrene from his wounds. Like all buildings at Old Trail Town, the Coffin School was moved to the Cody site, reassembled and furnished with frontier-era school desks.

Old Trail Town

Spirit Mountain. Just five miles from Cody, this 7,890-foot peak is commonly called Cedar Mountain. The prominent peak can be viewed from many places throughout Cody. Town founder Buffalo Bill Cody loved the mountain, and he told his friends he wanted to be buried there so he could forever overlook his beloved town.

When he died in Denver in 1917, however, his estranged wife Louisa accepted $10,000 from the city of Denver and the publisher of The Denver Post so that the city could bury the still-famous Wild West Show visionary in Denver instead of Cody. Whether or not that actually happened depends on who you ask. The folks at the Buffalo Bill Grave in Golden, Colo. will assure you that is indeed Buffalo Bill buried in the grave there.

Yet there are many people in Cody who believe a different story, one that involves a caravan of Buffalo Bill’s friends, a long drive to Denver, body-switching, a return trip to Cody with the true remains of Buffalo Bill and a secret burial on Spirit Mountain. And that, according to believers of the legend, is where Buffalo Bill Cody still rests today, overlooking the town he founded.

FRIGHT AT THE MUSEUM

St Louis City Museum

Throughout the year, St. Louis' CITY MUSEUM provides a fun menagerie of unique environments and exhibits that kids and kids at heart are sure to be geeked to explore. What was once a ten story shoe factory and warehouse has now been transformed into an artistic wonderland that will put your curiosity and imagination into overdrive.

Do you have the courage to thrust yourself down a ten story slide that was originally a shaft used to transport finished shoes from the building's factory area to its warehouse? Brave enough to tackle a subterranean maze called "the caves?" Have the stamina to navigate a vertical climbing course on the exterior of the building complete with planes to leap into that gives you the feeling of soaring over the cityscape? These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the exciting and exhilarating experiences to be had at the City Museum.

FIVE WAYS TO ENJOY A CODY YELLOWSTONE FALL GETAWAY

cody yellowstone roadtrip

With summer vacations wrapped up and children back to school, if you want to enjoy the scenery of Yellowstone without the sight of crowds of other tourists around the Fall season is a great time for a getaway to the national park and the nearby quaint northwestern Wyoming town of Cody. This town provides a great staging point with the comforts of civilization for your outdoor adventures in the Yellowstone region.

Here are five ways to enjoy a Cody Yellowstone fall getaway:

Go fishing. Cody Yellowstone is home to an abundance of top-flight fishing spots including the North and South Forks of the Shoshone River and rivers and streams in Yellowstone National Park. Local fishing outfitters offer guides, maps and advice. Blue-ribbon trout fishing is especially popular in the fall, where Yellowstone cutthroat, one of the four subspecies of cutthroat found in Wyoming, can be found throughout the region.

Drive a UTV to a backcountry ghost town. Cody-based Tread ‘N Trails rents street-legal UTVs for adventurous visitors to explore backcountry areas such as the ghost town of Kirwin. Located high in the Absaroka Mountains above the town of Meeteetse, the discovery of gold in the late 1800s prompted the creation of this once-thriving boomtown. When a disastrous blizzard struck in 1907, most people left the town, leaving behind numerous structures and mines. UTV enthusiasts can explore miles of trails surrounding the town. They can also take a short hike to the foundation of a cabin that was being built by aviatrix Amelia Earhart, a frequent visitor to the region before her disappearance.

Drive a scenic byway. Road-tripping in the fall is a memorable way to enjoy fall color, with five scenic drives leading into Cody that take travelers past some of Wyoming’s most breathtaking valleys, mountain passes, rivers and forests. Download the free TravelStorys app and listen to a GPS-prompted audio tour of the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway or the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway. Fans of audio tours can also listen to a guided walking tour highlighting downtown Cody’s historic structures.

View wildlife in action. Fall is one of the best times of the year to watch wildlife in action. The forests, river valleys, mountains and canyons of Cody Yellowstone are filled with wildlife such as bears, elk, wolves, moose, bison, eagles and river otters, and many of these species are especially active in the fall. Bears spend the fall months filling up on pine nuts to fatten up before heading to their dens in the winter. It’s mating season for elk, and the males of the species court prospective mates by shrilly bugling and challenging other males to battles. Fall is also a great time to watch wolves. Wolf packs are often larger in the fall than other times of the year because pups are finally big enough to hunt with the adults. Top places to see wildlife in Cody Yellowstone include Lamar Valley in Yellowstone National Park, and along the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway from Cody to the northeast gate of the park and the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway from Cody to the east gate of the park.

Hit the trails. Explore Cody Yellowstone on a bike, on horseback or on foot. A free downloadable trail map offers suggestions for trails based on desired challenge level and type of trail (hiking, horseback riding, gravel bike or road bike). Grab a free downloadable trail map and hop on a bike to explore the town and the surrounding areas. Popular regions include downtown Cody, Beck Lake, Slick Rock and the Shoshone National Forest.

off roading fun

After a day full of adventure, you are sure to be hungry and thirsty. The new Cody Yellowstone Sippin’ Trail is a great way for visitors to experience some of the town’s most popular restaurants and bars. The trail includes breweries, restaurants and unique venues such as a cigar lounge and a historic hotel built by town founder Buffalo Bill Cody. Visitors who download a free app and make a purchase at the participating locations can earn points for rewards like Sippin Trail T-shirts, pint glasses and stickers.

Home of the Great American Adventure, Cody Yellowstone is comprised of the northwestern Wyoming towns of Cody, Powell and Meeteetse as well as areas inside of Yellowstone National Park and the valley east of the entrance. The region is known for recreational adventures that reflect the adventurous spirit of the visionaries and explorers who brought the remote region to the world’s attention.

EIGHT IDEAS FOR A ROMANTIC CODY YELLOWSTONE GETAWAY

yellowstone valentines day getaway

Have yourself a wild adventure for Valentine's Day with your special someone by going on a getaway to visit the scenic territory of Yellowstone National Park and the northwestern Wyoming towns of Cody, Powell and Meeteetse that neighbor it. Without the summer tourist crowds, winter is a great time to experience this wonderland as if the place was your own personal playground. Enjoy some one-on-one time enjoying the sights and sounds of the region with your Valentine.

“Nature is the star performer in the winter, when couples can view the starry skies, wandering wildlife and winter landscapes in quiet solitude,” Ryan Hauck, executive director of Cody Yellowstone, the marketing arm for the region that includes the towns of Cody, Powell and Meeteetse, a large swath of the Shoshone National Forest and about half of Yellowstone National Park, told ageekdaddy.com. “No matter what their shared interests, couples can find endless inspiration in the frosty quiet of the forests and valleys and the historic streets of downtown Cody.”

winter visits

In addition to the splendor of nature's scenery, couples visiting Cody during the pre-summer quiet season will find plenty of ways to enjoy each other’s company. Here are some ideas:
  • Sharpen skills together. Cody Yellowstone stages periodic special events such as this four-day Winter Photography Workshop in late February. Led by two celebrated outdoor photographers, the workshop includes accommodations at the historic Irma Hotel, instruction and field trips into the frosty wilderness.
  • Observe frosty critters at sunrise. Get up early, grab a coffee and drive along the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway towards Yellowstone with binoculars handy. The early-morning hours and dusk are two of the best times to see animals in the wild. There are numerous places to pull off the road to scope for bison, elk, deer, bighorn sheep and even moose.
  • Act like a couple of kids in a candy store. Literally. The Cowtown Candy Company celebrates sweet nostalgia in the form of hand-dipped truffles, homemade fudge as well specialty sodas and unique gifts. Couples with a taste for authentic sweets will find a distinctive selection at the Meeteetse Chocolatier. Owned by a one-time cowboy, the store’s celebrated concoctions include raspberry, peanut butter and even jalapeno truffles.
  •  Cross country ski through the forest. Work off the calories along the classic tracks and skate lanes along the Shoshone River at Pahaska Tepee near the East Gate to Yellowstone National Park. Or head to the remote Wood River Valley Ski Touring Park. Skis as well as snowshoes can be rented at outfitters in town or at the Sleeping Giant Ski Area.
  • Make it a Date Night at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. The acclaimed museum stages periodic date nights such as a Sangria and Tapas evening. The celebrated museum also hosts Cody Culture Club evenings with talks about a variety of Cody topics.
  • Or make it a date night with a twist (or olive). Sip on a cocktail and listen to live music at the Chamberlin Inn. The romantic boutique inn serves inventive cocktails and snacks and stages live music on Friday nights in its cozy Spirits Lounge.
  • Shop for the perfect new painting. Art is a tradition in Cody, and couples will find numerous art galleries and one-of-a-kind stores and antique shops overflowing with a wide range of art and home décor. In addition, museums like the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and By Western Hands have a wide selection of Western-style creations for purchase.
  • End the day with a beer crawl. Hops-loving couples can sample local brews at numerous downtown locations such as Pat O’Hara’s Brewing Company, Cody Craft Brewing and the Millstone Pizza Company and Brewery. Be safe! Stay at one of the many hotels right in downtown Cody and walk to each location.

DAREDEVIL EATING PUFFER FISH

eating puffer fish

When it comes to daredevil adventures, eating a meal probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind. Yet, people travel to Shimonoseki, Japan to engage in culinary daredeviling of eating a dish that could kill them if not properly prepared by expert chefs. They visit the Blowfish Capital of Japan to taste fugu, also known as the liver of puffer fish, which is considered both a delicacy and a feat of courage to eat.

Eating fugu is risky, because a puffer fish's liver contains a high concentration of deadly poison known as tetrodotoxin. Consuming a tiny amount of tetrodotoxin can result in a paralysis of major organs including the lungs and heart resulting in death. Yet for 2,800 years people here have been consuming this dare-fueled dish for the thrill of adventure and as those who have eaten it have said an appreciation of its un-seafood-like meaty taste.

daredevil eating

People can eat fugu and other puffer fish dishes thanks to specially licensed chefs who trained to avoid its toxins. This technique known as “migaki” is a delicate skill acquired from years of training culminating in a license and special distinction. You definitely don't want to catch and cook up a puffer fish on your own to eat!

So, would you dare to eat fugu or any other type of puffer fish dish? Would visiting Shimonoseki to eat puffer fish be a bucket list adventure for you? Or would you rather just stay clear of blow fish?

JOYROOM CAR CHARGER

family travel tips

Summer travel season is here! One of the biggest family feuds we have when traveling in our car for a family road trip is everyone wanting to recharge their mobile devices during a drive through the one port available in the dashboard. To help alleviate that problem this summer, I picked up a JOYROOM Car Charger that is compatible with multiple brands, including both Apple and Android, and allows up to five devices to charge simultaneously. I'm geeked to use this charger during our travels this summer and hopefully it will alleviate some of the gripes from my kids when we are traveling on the road.

Joyroom car charger

This car charger works through simply plugging into a vehicle's cigarette lighter or central power port and is configured with 72W total outputs. It is equipped with two outlets so the charger can be easily accessed from both the front seats and back seats of a vehicle. A five foot cable with attached power ports can be clipped to the back of the driver's seat so kids in the back of the car can access it to power their devices while the main charger can have GPS devices, phones and so on tap into it from those riding in the front seats.

joyroom

The JOYROOM 72W Fast Car Charger is 5 times faster than the 2.4A car phone chargers on the market.  It fully charges a depleted iPhone 13/12 in approximately 33 minutes, iPad Air 5 in 48 minutes, a Samsung S22 in 32 minutes or a Motorola in 34 minutes. It works with all 12V~24V vehicles multiple car charger outlets and cigarette lighters. Conveniently keep your mobile devices charged within your car while traveling!

INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCES AT STAR WARS GALAXY'S EDGE

star wars galaxys edge

Immerse yourself in the Star Wars galaxy with a visit to the Black Spire Outpost on the planet of Batuu (aka Galaxy's Edge at Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park in Orlando, Florida). Imagine being on a Star Wars adventure while engaging in a variety of interactive experiences. Enjoying a pint of blue milk, crafting your own lightsaber and taking the Millenium Falcon for a spin provide an out of this world vacation without having to travel to a galaxy far, far away.

STORMTROOPERS ON PATROL

geek daddy

Be alert for stormtroopers promoting order and snuffing out rebellion within the spaceport of this Outer Rim world. They like to question passersby and pry into their business. These impromptu encounters can make you stand out in the crowd and provide a personal touch to your Star Wars Galaxy's Edge experience. Additionally, you may bump into Chewbacca or Rey who are enlisting people into the Resistance.

DRINK BLUE MILK

Ever since Luke Skywalker took a gulp of blue milk in the movie A New Hope, Star Wars fans have been fascinated with the beverage. Disney has concocted a specialty drink to provide visitors to Galaxy's Edge with a refreshment that lets you try the stuff out for yourself. It is plant-based instead of dairy so as not to exclude people from the experience with milk allergies or lactose intolerance. My description of Galaxy's Edge blue milk is it has the consistency of a drinkable yogurt with the taste of cotton candy flavored Faygo.

disney world galaxys edge

Blue Milk is actually made with a base of rice milk powder and coconut oil. It gets it color from adding blue-green algae into the mix rather than artificial coloring. Don't tell Aunt Beru but there is also a version of the drink with Bacardi Rum as an extra ingredient to provide some extra kick to the drink.

CRAFT A LIGHTSABER

Who doesn't want to wield a lightsaber?! Stop by Savi's Workshop to learn some wisdom of the Force and craft your very own lightsaber. Personalize its components and blade color to create a fantastic souvenir that matches your own personal style. Reservations are required so don't try to just walk in or you might miss out on this experience. My son was so GEEKED to participate in this!

ESCAPE A STAR DESTROYER

rise of the resistance

Oh no! You've been captured as a rebel spy and taken to a star destroyer in the Rise of the Resistance ride at Star Wars Galaxy's Edge. Combining cast member theatrical elements with special effects, this ride will have you feeling like you just jumped into the action of a Star Wars movie. Do you have what it takes to escape being imprisoned on a star destroyer and find a way to return to Batuu?

BUILD A DROID

I love droids! I'm such a gearhead! Galaxy's Edge is full of droids and you can even build one to bring home with you.

star wars galaxys edge

Step inside droid depot and construct your very own personalized remote control BB or R series droid. Select pieces off a conveyor belt and get building. Screw together parts just like a mechanic working in a droid factory.

droid depot

In addition to having a fun remote control toy, these droids can enhance your Galaxy's Edge experience interacting and reacting to elements and objects both on Batuu and around Disney resorts. Plus, when you get home they are still fun to play with around the house.

FLY THE MILLENNIUM FALCON

Participate in a Smugglers Run that utilizes a motion simulator to let you experience what it would be like to fly sci-fi's most famous spaceship. A more intimate version of Star Tours that has you seated in a replica of the Millennium Falcon's cockpit. You aren't just along for the ride as manipulating the spaceship's controls impacts the outcome of your experience. Realistic digital imagery in the cockpit's windows, motion corresponding to the action you are seeing and the interactive elements of the controls make it seem as if you are really taking a flight through the Star Wars galaxy. Hit it Chewie!

The ride queue is amazing too so don't rush through it. It starts off with a life size scale replica of the Millennium Falcon and lets you wander inside this hunk of junk. Don't miss out on taking a photo op at the holochess table!

geek daddy

Have yourself an exciting Star Wars adventure with a visit to the Galaxy's Edge. This experience is also available in Disneyland if California is a more convenient destination than Florida. This is the theme park experience you have been looking for!

THREE LESSONS MODERN DADS CAN LEARN FROM DIGITAL NOMADS

digital nomad

Have you heard of digital nomads? These are people who utilize technology to work remotely so as to be location independent. So instead of being tied to a desk in an office building a digital nomad may be working from a beach-side cabana, while traveling around the United States in an RV or maybe even from hotels in foreign countries while exploring the world. They utilize the connectivity of the Internet and today's communications and computing technology to lead a nomadic lifestyle.

Digital nomading may be great before you have kids or even with preschoolers. Once your kids hit school age, however, there’s a lot of reasons why it’s useful to have a home base. Even so, there’s still a lot modern dads can learn from digital nomads. Here are a few of the key lessons.

Keep on top of time with technology

You may think that your kids are too young to have smartphones and apps. There is, however, nothing to stop you from creating and managing accounts for them. For example, if you use an Android smartphone yourself, then you could create Gmail accounts for your kids. Then you can put anything related to them in their own calendar, which you can see.

The advantage of this approach is that changes to a kid’s calendar will be seen immediately by everyone who has access to it. This avoids the problem of you updating your own calendar but forgetting to tell anyone else who needs to know.

Digital nomads always have knowledge of how to get WiFi connection. They always know the best internet for rural areas and urban areas. This helps them to stay connected in whichever parts of the world they choose to be. Try to get the highest quality internet you can as it will prevent frustration, and help productivity.

digital nomading tips

Separate your contact details from your location

You’re probably already doing this to some extent with cell phones and email. Now, however, could be a great time to up your game. For example, ditching your regular landline for a VoIP number can do a lot more than just lower your phone bills. It can give you access to the kinds of call-management features which used to be exclusive to business.

What’s more, you can have extra numbers without extra lines. This could be very handy if you wanted to work/side-hustle/run a business from home. In fact, if you are or thinking about side-hustling/running a business from home, then you probably want to up your game even further. Using low cost virtual address services allows you to give people a mailing address without potentially compromising your home address.

Make sure that you have a portable workspace

Full-time travel with kids is, realistically, not a practical option for the average family. Part-time travel with kids, however, can lead to some of the best experiences a family can have. Your ability to work “away from base” can make a significant difference to your ability to get out and about with your kids. After all, even if you’re just heading out on a short road trip, you might find it very helpful to keep on top of work.

digital nomading

The better your portable workspace, the more options you can have. That means it really can be worth thinking about what you, personally, need to be productive on the move for different lengths of time. When considering this, remember to think about accessories such as cases, cables, cards and, of course, power.

For example, a tablet on its own might keep you going when you’re waiting to pick up your kids from some activity. If, however, you’re going “off base” for a day, then you need to start thinking about extra power. If you want to do any serious work, then you might find it very helpful to have an external keyboard and mouse. In fact, you may even find that you really need to upgrade to a laptop.

DROID DEPOT

droid depot

During my family's sci fi adventure to the Black Spire Outpost on the planet of Batuu at Star Wars' Galaxy's Edge both my kids wanted a memorable souvenir to bring home with them. My son was infatuated with crafting a handbuilt lightsaber at Savi's Workshop. His twin sister on the other hand was more interested in customizing a creation at the Droid Depot. Both building a droid combined with the Baby Yoda backpack my daughter begged us to buy for her came out to about the same price as my son building a lightsaber so they each had an individualized experience while we were at Walt Disney World's Star Wars Land.

It was so much fun to see life-size droids displayed around Star Wars Galaxy's Edge at Walt Disney World Hollywood Studios theme park. Droids are such a huge part of the Star Wars! Who wouldn't want their very own droid?! The Droid Depot allows you to construct a quarter scale remote control astromech unit that you can bring home with you. Fun to play with and a great memento from a Walt Disney World vacation.

Step inside the Droid Depot and you'll find yourself surrounded by realistic looking BB and R-series droids and shelves full of parts for building and repairing them. A conveyor belt also carries an assortment of quarter scale parts that people can customize in creating their very own droid. There are a variety of body colors and dome head styles to choose from in putting together you droid.

For the BB-series droids like the Resistance's heroic BB-8 (The Force Awakens) or First Order's villainous BB-9E, Droid Depot lets you pick from a selection of items off the conveyor belt that include a dome, dome connection plate, body sphere and motivator. Make a replica of your favorite BB droid from the Star Wars movies or build your own original design. When done these droids move about like a spinning beach ball with a personality.

You can also choose to build a droid in the R-series style of astromechs like the Rebellion's R2-D2 or Empire's R2-Q5. Droid Depot's available parts to select from include a dome, body, center leg and set of side legs. My daughter decided to build an R2-D2 inspired droid with a purple dome head and black/silver legs.

Unfortunately, while customization is really touted in the Droid Depot promotions she found that color combinations were somewhat limited for the parts. While she loved the purple and silver head, a matching body wasn't available so she included a white and blue R2-D2 body which left her somewhat disappointed. Overall though she loves her creation and really enjoyed the activity of putting it together at the Droid Depot.

Once your parts have been selected from the Droid Depot conveyor belt, you move to a build station. Placing everything on a placemat that highlights directions for builders to assemble a droid. Screw together your parts just like a mechanic working in a droid factory.

Once complete, your droid is placed within an activation station which pairs it with a remote control and adds some theater to your experience in showing the droid come to life. I really like that these Star Wars droids come with their own remote controls because it annoys me when you spend a bunch of money on a toy then it is linked to your phone or tablet in order to use it. I don't want to have to be badgered about handing over my phone so one of my kids can play with a toy through an app.

Building an astromech at the Droid Depot not only provides an exciting toy but it also is an entertaining Star Wars immersive experience that provides a memorable moment during your time at the Black Spire Outpost. Additionally, these build your own droids are equipped with bluetooth technology that lets them communicate with other astromechs created at the Droid Depot as well as as interact and react with other elements and objects both on Batuu and around Disney parks and resorts.

Just note you aren't allowed to drive your droid around the theme park with its remote control. Carrying your droid in your hands or in an add-on extra purchase backpack designed specifically for use at Star Wars Galaxy's Edge is required for transporting it around the theme park. If you just want to take the droid home with you there is a nice cardboard container great for storing it that is included in the purchase price.

We visited Droid Depot near the end of our last night at Walt Disney World so didn't have time to play around with it at the theme parks. My daughter was geeked about the experience of building it at the Droid Depot and has been having a lot of fun playing with it since we arrived home. She really loves her custom astromech unit so I'm glad we let her build one during our Disney World vacation.

For those of you who don't mind interconnecting your phone with toys, there is also a free app that you can download to control the droid via a mobile device.  Because I use my smart phone both for work and family matters I tend not to want to do that but admit there are features like augmented reality and artificial intelligence that can make this option very worthwhile. So it is really cool that you have both options with these droids from Star Wars Galaxy's Edge.

The Droid Depot App is available on Apple and Android devices. It lets you pilot a droid without using the remote control provided with the toy. The app also lets you program maneuvers so you can make your droid dance. My daughter has been have a great time with that feature. Plus through the app you can also play a strategy game against your droid like tic tac toe. For those who can't make the trek to Batuu there is also a virtual mode where app users can create a digital droid to play with on their mobile device's screen.

For those who want to enhance their Droid Depot toy there are also personality chips that can be purchased for an additional fee that expand upon how your droid interacts with you and its surroundings. You can pick those up at the Droid Depot or if you decide later on that it would be a nice addition to your droid personality chips are available from Amazon.com as well.
