TIGERS KICK OFF AUGUST WITH A SWEEP

detroit tigers august 2 2026 game highlights

The Detroit Tigers crushed the Athletics 11-0 on a Sunday afternoon in California completing their first-ever season-series sweep against this American League opponent behind six scoreless innings of pitching from Keider Montero and four RBIs batted in by Eduardo Valencia.

Sweeping the West Coast and Keeping the Faith

What a difference a couple of days makes in baseball. Coming off the emotional whirlwind of roster shakes and trade deadline moves—including the heavy heart of parting ways with our ace—the Detroit Tigers showed us that this club still has plenty of fight left in the dugout. Sunday afternoon at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento was nothing short of a statement win.

Montero Rebounds from Baltimore Loss

Keider Montero had a great day on the mound pitching six scoreless innings while allowing only two hits and two walks to earn his eighth win of the season:
  • Extreme Efficiency: Montero threw 53 of his 86 pitches for strikes, navigating 6 complete frames while facing just 4 batters over the minimum.
  • Pitch Mix & Defense: He commanded a heavy 94.5 mph sinker with an average spin rate of 2227 rpm, forcing a high volume of weak contact. He even flashed his own defensive skills by fielding a sharp combacker off the bat of Tyler Soderstrom in the first inning.
  • Bouncing Back Strong: This dominant outing was a massive bounce-back performance for the young right-hander. In his previous start on July 27 against Baltimore, he surrendered 4 earned runs and 9 hits across 4.1 innings. Shrinking the hits allowed from 9 to just 2 shows exactly what he is capable of when hitting his spots.
Making History

With this 11-0 rout, the Detroit Tigers didn't just win the game—they polished off a clean 6-0 sweep of the season series against the Athletics. This marks the first time that has happened against the A's by the Tigers since they both entered the American League in its charter season of 1901.

Where We Stand

Despite the noise and the tough loss of a fan favorite player, the Detroit Tigers are refusing to back down. This third straight victory keeps us sitting right on the fringe, just 2.5 games out of the final American League wild-card spot as the team heads for Seattle. If this team wants to make a miracle run like they did a couple of summers ago, days like this Sunday prove they aren't dead yet.

MAKE SURE YOU'RE PROTECTED WHEN YOU'RE ON THE ROAD

driving tips from dad

Whenever you go out on the road, you want to make sure that you are as protected as possible. We understand that for some people they think that as long as they are in control of the vehicle, this makes them safe on the road, and this is true to an extent. Being present when you’re driving shouldn’t be negotiable, but even when you are there is still a chance that things could go wrong, and it’s important that you are as protected as possible.

So, let’s look at some of the ways that you can ensure you are safe and protected each time you get out on the road:

Safety Features On The Car

First, we’re going to look at safety features on the car. When you purchase your car, you want to make sure that it has as many safety features as possible as you’re going to be relying on them later down the line.

Make sure that you’re looking into all of them, otherwise you could be in trouble when something goes wrong out there. Most cars come with safety features as standard these days, but if there are any that you don’t have but do want, speak to the dealer before you purchase.

Insure Your Vehicle

Another thing that you should be doing is insuring your vehicle. Now, it’s actually illegal to drive without insurance on your vehicle, but even if we were to put that to the side, you need insurance anyway in case something happens to your car. You need to think about how much it could cost to fix your car, or the other persons, if you end up in an accident of some sort.

Insurance covers this if this happens, with you only having to pay the excess which is important, so you need to have this cover. Again, it’s illegal not to, so make sure that you do.

Roadside Assistance

Finally, we’re going to be taking a look at roadside assistance. When your car breaks down and you have no way to move it, you are going to need assistance to come and get you, but you don’t want to have to pay through the nose for this. As such, you should have Seat roadside assistance if this is your make, or whatever other roadside assistance policy you want to have.

As long as you have someone who is going to come and help you when you are stuck at the side of the road, and you’re not going to have to panic if your bank account is empty, that’s what matters.

I hope that you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you should be doing to ensure that you are safe and protected when you are on the road. Take your time, and make sure that you go through each thing on this list, making sure that you have what you need before you get back in your vehicle and drive it again.

ORIOLES LET HOMERUNS FLY AGAINST TIGERS

detroit tigers geek

The Tigers suffered a Monday night 8-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles extending their losing streak to three games and putting a damper on Detroit's pursuit of an American League Wild Card slot for the post-season.

Well, fellow Tiger fans, that one stung. Just as we were starting to feel the good vibes of a mid-summer push, the Baltimore Orioles rolled into Comerica Park and showed us exactly how brutal the playoff race can be. It was a frustrating series opener where every single mistake we made found its way over the outfield wall. Our bats fought hard to keep us in it, tallying 11 hits overall, but the pitching staff just couldn't hold down a suddenly homer-happy Baltimore lineup.

Here is how the numbers shook out in Monday's series opener:
  • The Pitching Woes: Keider Montero (7-6) took the loss, getting tagged for a season-high 6 runs (4 earned) on 9 hits across 4.1 innings. The bullpen didn't offer much relief early on, as Brenan Hanifee and Tyler Holton both surrendered costly long balls right after Montero exited.
  • The Counterpunch That Fizzled: Give credit to the offense—they didn't lay down. Zach McKinstry stayed hot, ripping his third triple of the year in the second inning to jumpstart our first run. In the fourth, an infield single by Hao-Yu Lee (extending his hitting streak to 12 games!) and a Matt Vierling sacrifice fly brought us within one.
  • The Inability to Contain: Every time we got close, Baltimore answered with authority. In the fifth, Leody Taveras launched a solo shot, and Coby Mayo followed with a crushing two-run homer off Hanifee to push their lead to 7-3. We clawed back to 7-5 via a Spencer Torkelson sacrifice fly and a McKinstry RBI single, but Tyler O'Neill put it out of reach with a pinch-hit homer in the sixth.
  • Bullpen Shutdown: Baltimore's relievers completely stifled our bats over the final four innings, leaving us stranded without a single run against Grant Wolfram, Yennier Cano, Andrew Kittredge, or closer Rico Garcia.
With this loss dropping us to a 50-57 record, the clock is ticking loudly for A.J. Hinch and the front office. We are now 4 games back from the final Wild Card spot, and with the August 3 trade deadline just days away, management faces some agonizing choices on whether to buy, sell, or stand pat.

As Riley Greene put it post-game: "All of these are must-win games. We have to win all of them." Let's shake this one off, get behind the boys, and hope the pitching can flip the script tomorrow.

TIGERS COME FROM BEHIND W IN ANAHEIM

detroit tigers july 17 game highlights

The Detroit Tigers secured a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against the Los Angeles Angels in the teams July 17 matchup. Down to their final out in the ninth inning, Hao-Yu Lee blasted a clutch two-run double to put the Tigers ahead on the scoreboard.

How Detroit Stole One in Anaheim:

Tigers Win in the 9th! Whew, did anyone else's heart almost stop last night? If you stayed up late to watch the Tigers kick off the second half of the season against the Angels at Angel Stadium, you were treated to a masterclass in never giving up.

Pitching Kept Tigers Alive:

First of all, shoutout to Troy Melton. The 25-year-old righty was pitching right in his own backyard, and he absolutely brought it. He grinded through 5.2 innings, allowed just one run, and racked up an impressive 9 strikeouts. He got into a little bit of trouble with walks early, but he settled down like an absolute pro.

But the real MVP of the night might just be Keider Montero. When he came in, our bullpen absolutely locked it down. Montero went 3.1 innings and gave up just one hit while striking out five! When the Angels threatened in the bottom of the ninth, he stayed cool as ice to secure the final out.

Ninth-Inning Magic:

Let's talk about the drama in the top of the ninth. Things looked bleak. Tigers were down 1-0 and down to their final out against Angels reliever Kirby Yates. But this team just doesn't quit.

After some gritty baserunning, Detroit had guys on the bases. Then, Hao-Yu Lee stepped up to the plate and delivered the absolute dagger! He lined a two-out, two-run double into right-center field. Seeing Riley Greene and James Outman come crossing home plate to take the 2-1 lead was a shot of pure adrenaline.

Defensive Jewels:

The Tigers couldn't have pulled this off without some serious leather work in the bottom of the frame. With two runners on, third baseman Kevin McGonigle made an unbelievable, leaping grab on a high chopper and fired a rocket to first! That play saved the game and gave Montero the breathing room to shut the door on an Angels comeback.

A win like this—scrappy, pitching-heavy, and decided by late-inning heroics—is exactly the kind of momentum the team needs heading into the rest of this grueling 13-games-in-13-days stretch of their schedule. Having stumbled through a disastrous May, the remainder of the month of July really is a make it or break time if the team has hopes for a postseason appearance.

DESERT HEIST BY ALEX DEKKER

Nate Wilde

Desert Heist
by Alex Dekker is a masterfully executed debut for the writer that perfectly bridges the gap between historical mystery and gritty military realism. Published by Emily Bestler Books, this high-octane thriller introduces readers to Nate Wilde, a former Green Beret turned Harvard archaeology student who trades academic red tape for an unsanctioned, high-stakes tactical expedition into the Middle East.

The Plot: "Indiana Jones" Meets "Jack Reacher"

The story follows Nate Wilde as he becomes obsessed with finding the legendary lost city of Ubar—the so-called "Atlantis of the Sands". When political bureaucracy stalls his official dig, Wilde takes matters into his own hands. He assembles a team of his former Special Forces brothers to infiltrate the dangerous, unforgiving terrain of the Saudi Arabian "Empty Quarter" via war-torn Yemen. What begins as a quest for historical truth quickly devolves into a desperate race for survival as the team is hunted by terrorists, shadowy corporate entities, and local authorities.

alex dekker desert heist book review

Authenticity Drawn From Real-World Experience

What elevates Desert Heist above standard thriller fare is the undeniable authenticity injected into every page. As a retired Green Beret with nearly twenty years of Special Forces service, Dekker knows the territory, the language, and the tactics intimately. The weapon handling, squad banter, and operational planning feel raw and incredibly real. Instead of the cliché "lone wolf" operator trope, Dekker shines a light on the psychological strength and organic chemistry of a tight-knit Special Forces unit.

The "Operator-Scholar" Dynamic

The core strength of the novel lies in the distinct juxtaposition of its protagonist. Nate Wilde is just as comfortable decoding ancient historical texts as he is clearing a room with an assault rifle. This blend of intellectual curiosity and lethality makes him a captivating lead. The pacing transitions seamlessly from a slow-burn academic mystery into an explosive, heart-pounding tactical survival story.

Alex Dekker

The Verdict: Desert Heist Makes Great Summer Read

While the plot occasionally flirts with traditional action tropes and a slightly formulaic villain, its  historical details and blistering pacing completely overshadow minor critiques. It delivers the exact type of action adventure that fans of Jack Carr, Brad Thor, and Vince Flynn crave. Desert Heist cements Alex Dekker as a major new voice in military adventure fiction and earns a Geek Daddy nod of approval for its modern day take on the exotic escapades of an adventurous archeologist.

TIGERS SWEEP YANKEES FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2008

detroit tigers historic sweep of new york yankees

The Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Yankees 6-2 TODAY completing a three-game series sweep at Yankee Stadium.

Tigers Extra-Inning Explosion Secures Historic Sweep in New York

What did we just witness, Tigers faithful?! Grab your Vernors and your Coney dogs, because the Detroit Tigers just did something they have never done before in the history of the new Yankee Stadium: they completed a three-game series sweep against the Bronx Bombers on their own turf!

The last time our boys swept the Yankees in New York was back in 2008 at the old stadium. This afternoon though on a brutally hot, 95-degree afternoon, Detroit fought through a 9th-inning heartbreak, stood tall in extra innings, and left New York with a thrilling 6-2 victory in 11 innings.

Here is how a chaotic, beautiful, and gritty Wednesday afternoon unfolded:

The Dynamic Duo: Melton and McGonigle

For most of the game, this was a masterful pitching duel. Starting pitcher Troy Melton was absolutely dealing on the mound. Following dominant performances earlier in the week by Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal, Melton kept the pinstripe bats completely frozen.

Meanwhile, rookie sensation Kevin McGonigle provided the early spark. In the top of the 3rd, he crushed a Will Warren curveball 422 feet into the right-center field bleachers for a solo shot to put Detroit up 1-0. By the 6th, Riley Greene tacked on a sacrifice fly to drive in Dillon Dingler, moving the score to a seemingly comfortable 2-0.

The 9th Inning Heart Attack

Being a Detroit sports fan means never having it easy. Two outs away from securing the shutout victory in regulation, the bullpen imploded. Reliever Drew Anderson served up a solo home run to Amed Rosario to cut the lead to 2-1. Shortly after, a disastrous wild pitch allowed Jazz Chisholm Jr. to slide home, tying the game 2-2 and sending us into the nerve-wracking depths of extra innings.

Keider Montero: The 10th Inning Savior

The hero who kept our sweep hopes alive wasn't a batter—it was Keider Montero. Shuffled out of a crowded rotation into a relief role, Montero entered a high-stakes nightmare in the bottom of the 10th. With the winning run standing 90 feet away on third base, Montero went ice-cold. He struck out Oswaldo Cabrera and then dialed up a 97.2 mph fastball to strike out Ali Sánchez, blowing the roof off the Tigers dugout and keeping the game alive.

The 11th Inning Avalanche

In the top of the 11th, the floodgates didn't just open; they collapsed on the Yankees. New York reliever Camilo Doval completely lost the strike zone, walking three consecutive batters—including a bases-loaded pass to Spencer Torkelson that forced Kevin McGonigle home to take a 3-2 lead.

Then came Zach McKinstry with the dagger. McKinstry laced a sharp single to right field. Yankees catcher Ali Sánchez attempted a throw to second base to catch McKinstry, but threw the ball wildly straight into center field. It turned into a total defensive circus as Riley Greene, Hao-Yu Lee, and Spencer Torkelson all crossed home plate to secure a four-run explosion!

Montero trotted back out for the bottom of the 11th and slammed the door shut, extending the Yankees' miserable losing streak to seven games.

Let's keep this momentum rolling! What was your favorite moment from this historic Bronx sweep? Drop your thoughts in the comments below! Go Tigers!

USA FACES OFF AGAINST BOSNIA IN WORLD CUP

usa vs bosnia world cup preview

The United States Men’s National Soccer Team faces Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday, July 1 in the World Cup Round of 32, with kickoff set for 8:00 PM ET from Santa Clara, California. One team will advance and the other will be knocked out of the international soccer tournament which showcases the best players from around the globe playing for national pride. Team USA is made up of a group of gritty underdogs looking to make a historic World Cup run for the country which would be especially special with the United States hosting the tournament while celebrating the nation's 250th anniversary.

If you are a Detroit sports fan, you know exactly what this feels like. We spent years watching the Lions build grit, watching Dan Campbell talk about biting kneecaps, and watching the Red Wings reconstruct a roster from the ground up. This USMNT squad under Mauricio Pochettino is giving off those exact same blueprint vibes. They cruised through Group D by taking care of business against Paraguay and Australia. Even that 3-2 group-stage finale loss to Turkey didn’t hurt because Pochettino rested the big dogs. Now, it is win-or-go-home time—the kind of single-elimination pressure Detroiters live for.

Here is how the matchup breaks down through a classic, grit-loving Detroit sports lens:

The Blueprint: How the U.S. Wins

The USMNT is entering this game as a heavy favorite, but as any Tigers or Lions fan will tell you, a "favorite" tag does not mean a thing if you don’t bring the work ethic. Bosnia is going to play exactly like a division rival coming into Ford Field. They are going to sit back in a mid-to-low defensive block, clog up the middle, and try to make the game as ugly, physical, and frustrating as possible.

For the U.S. to break them down, it comes down to three things:
  • The Captain is Back: Christian Pulisic is officially locked into the starting lineup after managing a calf injury during group play. He is the Amon-Ra St. Brown of this team—reliable, clinical, and the guy who moves the chains when everything else stalls.
  • Poch’s Heavy Metal Press: Coach Pochettino’s high press is built to punish teams that try to sit deep and launch desperate long balls. Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie need to play like elite defensive line anchors, blowing up Bosnia’s counter-attacks before they ever cross the midfield stripe.
  • Speed Out Wide: Bosnia’s central defenders are solid but notoriously slow. Folarin Balogun has the elite pace to stretch their backline. If the U.S. can transition quickly and feed Balogun in the half-spaces, they will blow this game wide open.
The Trap: What to Watch Out For

Bosnia is not going to beat the U.S. in a track meet, but they are incredibly dangerous on set pieces. They boast serious height and a physical forward presence in veteran Edin Dzeko. If the U.S. gives away cheap fouls around the box, it is the soccer equivalent of letting an opponent bleed the clock out with short, bruising run plays. The defensive pairing of Chris Richards and veteran Tim Ream must remain disciplined, secure the aerial duels, and avoid the chaotic defensive lapses that bit them against Turkey.

Final Prediction

This isn't the old USMNT that plays down to its competition and folds under international pressure. This team has too much homegrown grit and a manager who expects nothing less than a clinical performance. Bosnia will hold tough for the first 30 minutes, but the Americans' sheer athletic advantage in the midfield will eventually break the lock. Expect Pulisic to orchestrate an early breakthrough, forcing Bosnia to abandon their defensive shell and opening up the floodgates for goals by the USA.

team usa vs bosnia in 2026 world cup match

Final Score Prediction: USA 3, Bosnia 0. The U.S. marches on to the Round of 16 in Seattle.

TIGERS LOSE PITCHING DUEL TO ASTROS

june 25 2026 detroit tigers game results

The Detroit Tigers suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss against the Houston Astros tonight as a late-game rally fell just short at Comerica Park. Despite a brilliant pitching performance by rookie right-hander Troy Melton, who carried a perfect game into the sixth inning, Detroit’s bats could not find a solution in combating Astros starter Tatsuya Imai.

Game Summary: An Electric Pitching Duel

For the first five innings, Troy Melton was absolutely flawless. He mowed down the Astros lineup without allowing a single runner. Unfortunately, Houston's Tatsuya Imai was nearly as sharp, striking out 10 Tigers over six scoreless innings.

The deadlock broke in the top of the sixth when Taylor Trammell crushed a 422-foot solo home run to right field off Melton, ending the perfect game and giving Houston a 1-0 lead. The Astros added a crucial insurance run in the top of the ninth off Kenley Jansen. Jeremy Peña singled, stole second, advanced on a groundout, and scored on an Isaac Paredes sacrifice fly. That extra run proved devastating.

In the bottom of the ninth, Tigers catcher Dillon Dingler gave fans life by launching his 19th home run of the season to narrow the gap to 2-1. Riley Greene followed immediately with a single to bring the winning run to the plate, but Enyel De Los Santos induced a game-ending double play from Colt Keith to seal the loss.

The Fan's Take: Incredible Pitching Wasted by Quiet Bats

It is incredibly frustrating to watch a young pitcher like Troy Melton throw an absolute gem and come away with a loss. Melton showed top-of-the-rotation stuff, and executing a perfect game into the sixth inning against a dangerous Astros lineup proves his future is incredibly bright.

However, this game highlights the glaring issue holding the 2026 Tigers back: a stagnant, inconsistent offense. Striking out 10 times against Imai and failing to advance runners meant Melton had zero margin for error. While Dillon Dingler continues his All-Star caliber breakout season with his 19th blast, one-swing offenses won't win close ballgames. The aggressive approach in the 9th—homer, single, then a first-pitch double play—showed a lineup pressing too hard under pressure. Detroit has now dropped three straight games and desperately needs to find some run support before this homestand gets away from them.

YANKEES SNAP TIGERS 4 GAME WIN STREAK

detroit sports geek

The New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-3 on June 23 at Comerica Park. The heartbreaking loss snapped Detroit’s hot four-game winning streak halting the Tigers momentum to get out of the cellar in the American Leagues' standings for post-season contention.

Key Game Takeaways
  • Welcome to the Show, Ben Malgeri! The absolute best part of the night was the major league debut of outfielder Ben Malgeri. Called up earlier in the day, he wasted zero time. In his very first career at-bat in the third inning, Malgeri lined a first-pitch fastball into right field for a single. He later came around to score, making it an unforgettable debut.
  • Mize Shines, But the Sixth Inning Hurts: Casey Mize was absolutely dealing early on. He generated a ton of swings-and-misses with a nasty splitter and electric fastball. He struck out six and extended a stellar team streak—making it 27 consecutive games where a Tigers starter allowed four or fewer runs. Unfortunately, the sixth inning unraveled. After an infield single, Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a crushing two-run homer to right-center that ultimately flipped the game.
  • A Contentious Play at the Plate: Detroit had a massive opportunity in the bottom of the fourth. Riley Greene tried to score, but Cody Bellinger threw a bullet from the outfield to nail Greene at the plate. It was a killer base-running blow that took all the wind out of a potential big inning.
  • Late Fight Falls Just Short: Down 4-2 in the sixth, Dillon Dingler and Matt Vierling hit consecutive doubles to immediately cut the deficit to 4-3. The bullpen locked things down after Mize exited. However, the bats couldn't solve the back end of the Yankees' bullpen, leaving the tying run stranded late.

TIGERS ROAR AGAINST YANKEES

detroit tigers june 22 game highlights

The Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Yankees today 5-3 at Comerica Park. The victory secured the Tigers' fourth straight win and marked a historic milestone, beating Yankees ace Gerrit Cole for the first time in 10 years.

Key Game Takeaways
  • Tearing Into Cole: The Tigers’ offense completely rattled Gerrit Cole, knocking him out of the game in the fifth inning. Detroit blew the game open with a three-run third inning fueled by a Zach McKinstry triple and back-to-back clutch RBI singles from Spencer Torkelson and Colt Keith.
  • Riley Greene's Rocket: Riley Greene provided the absolute highlight of the night in the bottom of the fifth. He crushed a monumental 422-foot solo home run to right-center field, extending Detroit's lead to 5-1 and putting an exclamation point on the offensive clinic.
  • Framber Valdez Delivers: On the mound, Framber Valdez put together a stellar performance to stifle the star-studded Bronx Bombers. He racked up eight strikeouts over six highly effective innings, surrendering just a single earned run.
  • The Groundskeeper Intermission: In one of the strangest moments of the season, the game was delayed for seven minutes in the fourth inning when an in-ground camera popped out of the grass near second base. Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. hilariously tried to stomp and rebury it before the Comerica Park grounds crew arrived to save the day.
  • Will Vest Slams the Door: After a two-run homer from New York cut the lead to 5-3 in the seventh, the bullpen got tight. Will Vest was called into a high-leverage situation in the eighth with two runners on and struck out Jasson Domínguez to end the threat. Vest then cruised through a perfect ninth to secure his second save of the year.

TIGERS SWEEP WHITE SOX

detroit sports fan

The Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox 5-4 in 10 innings on June 21 at Comerica Park. The thrilling walk-off victory capped off a dramatic comeback and secured a three-game series sweep against their AL Central rivals.

Key Game Takeaways
  • Dillon Dingler's Clutch Heroics: Catcher Dillon Dingler was the undisputed MVP of this comeback. Down 3-1 in the eighth, Dingler crushed his 18th home run of the season to bring Detroit within a run. Then, down to the final out in the ninth after Jahmai Jones and Kevin McGonigle kept the game alive with back-to-back hits, Dingler slapped an RBI single through the left side to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Vierling Calls Game: After the White Sox manufactured a run in the top of the 10th on a sacrifice fly, the Tigers' offense went right back to work in the bottom half. Riley Greene singled and Spencer Torkelson drove home the tying run with an RBI knock. With the bases loaded and no outs, Matt Vierling stepped up as a pinch hitter and delivered a soft bloop single to shallow right field that could not be caught, plating Greene for the walk-off win.
  • Keider Montero Flirts With Perfection: Left-handed replacement starter Keider Montero was absolute magic early on. Filling in for an injured Justin Verlander, Montero retired the first 13 batters he faced in order before allowing a soft infield single in the fifth. He finished the afternoon throwing seven strong innings, allowing three runs on just a handful of hits while keeping Detroit within striking distance.
  • Scrappy Hits Win It: While the White Sox relied heavily on a two-run homer by Luisangel Acuña to do their damage, the Tigers ground out a victory by generating 13 total hits. Zach McKinstry opened the scoring in the fifth by driving in Colt Keith, setting the stage for the dramatic late-inning fireworks.

TIGERS DROP RUBBER MATCH TO ASTROS

detroit tigers june 17 game results

The Detroit Tigers dropped the series rubber match tonight to the Houston Astros with a 4-2 final score. Despite an encouraging return from the injured list by Casey Mize, the Tigers' offense was largely held in check during the June 17 game, ultimately conceding the Daikin Park series to the Astros.

The Recap: Mize's Return and Cold Bats

Wednesday’s matinee started with excitement as we welcomed Casey Mize back to the mound. While it was fantastic to see him back in action, the Astros managed to scratch across a few runs, highlighted by a solo home run from Jeremy Peña in the third inning. Houston's starter Peter Lambert had our lineup in a bind all afternoon. Through seven innings, Lambert surrendered only two hits, making it a frustrating day at the plate for Detroit.

The Spark: McGonigle and Carpenter Go Yard

The Tigers didn't go down without a fight! Showing off the exciting power brewing in our farm system, Kevin McGonigle crushed his sixth home run of the year, sending one deep into the left-field seats off Astros closer Josh Hader. Kerry Carpenter also homered to left center earlier in the game, providing the only other offense of the day.

Looking Forward

Dropping a series is never nice, but seeing the young guys like McGonigle flash their power against one of the league's toughest relievers is a major silver lining. The Tigers (now 30-44) will be looking to shake this one off and bounce back as the season rolls on.
