DOOM PATROL ON BLURAY

Warner Bros Home Entertainment provided this dad blogger with free Blu-rays. Opinions expressed are my own.

After spending Friday evenings the last two months watching new adventures of WandaVision stream on Disney+ each night now that mini-series has concluded it is time to tune into a new superhero adventure drama. We've decided to start watching DOOM PATROL together as a family since the first two seasons of this DC Comics inspired tv series recently became available to view on Blu-ray. We hadn't been able to see the show previously because it has been exclusively showing on the DC UNIVERSE and HBO MAX subscription streaming digital content platforms which I haven't bought memberships for. So our family tv viewing tonight is going to be the first few episodes of DOOM PATROL.

Based upon characters and situations from DC Comics, DOOM PATROL is about an idealistic mad scientist who creates a team of misfit heroes who have unique abilities that resulted from tragic circumstances. These superpowered outcasts join together in a series of misadventures. Yet when it comes down to it just may fall on the shoulders of the Doom Patrol to save the world from a supernatural threat that could snuff out life as we know it.

Here are the members of Doom Patrol:

Niles Caulder aka "The Chief" -- a medical doctor who helped save the lives of the Doom Patrol members yet who also orchestrated the events that caused each of them to develop their powers. This is all part of a hidden agenda to protect his daughter Dorothy from a mysterious danger.

Larry Trainor aka "Negative Man" -- a critical thinker with a romantic soul, Air Force test pilot Larry Trainor crashed his plane, exposing him to a mysterious “negative” energy. Now a being of pure energy, Negative Man must remain wrapped in bandages to protect those around him. He’s struggles with strange new powers that isolate him from the rest of humanity.

Cliff Steele aka "Robotman" -- a former race car driver, Cliff Steele was in a horrific accident that left his body uninhabitable. Cliff’s brain was saved by the mysterious "Chief" and he lives on in a powerful robotic body.

Rita Farr aka "Elasti-Woman" -- an actress on the rise, Rita Farr was exposed to a toxic gas that altered her cellular structure. Longing for the days of old, Rita finds a place for herself among The Doom Patrol.

Kay Challis aka "Crazy Jane" -- an unlikely hero suffering from the world’s most severe case of multiple personality disorder. Each of her 64 distinct personas manifest a different superpower making Jane the Doom Patrol’s most powerful member...and also its most unstable.

Victor Stone aka "Cyborg" -- Vic Stone is the charming and sarcastic half-human, half-machine superhero known as Cyborg. Vic may be connected to every computer on the world, but he struggles to maintain the connections that make him human.

You can purchase Season 1 & Season 2 of DOOM PATROL on Blu-ray from Best Buy. Make a purchase using a Geek Daddy affiliate link and this dad blogger will receive a small commission at no additional expense to you. Your support of ageekdaddy.com is appreciated!

THE YOUNG POPE -- REVIEW + DIGITAL HD GIVEAWAY

While I am a big fan of science fiction and fantasy adventures sometimes it is nice to mix things up a bit and watch a show with some serious dramatic chops to it.  So with Westworld and Game of Thrones on hiatus, I've decided to spend some time watching the first season of HBO's ten episode The Young Pope TV series now that it is available on Digital HD.  It is a show filled with political and psychological intrigue as a variety of players jockey for power within the Vatican wrestling for the authority to steer the direction of the 1 billion member congregation of the Catholic Church as well as the resources and responsibilities that come with that leadership.  The Young Pope is directed and edited by Paolo Sorrentino (co-writer and director of The Great Beauty which won an Academy Award for "Best Foreign Language Film" in 2014) who creates an art filmesque backdrop for this show that is full of visually stunning settings and splendid character portrayals.  The imagery of The Young Pope combined with the acting performances of two-time Academy Award nominee Jude Law and Academy Award winner Diane Keaton make this dramatic series in my opinion very much worth seeing.

In this fictional story,  a clandestine group of Cardinals arrange to get the Archbishop of New York City, Lenny Belardo (played by Jude Law), elected as the youngest and first-ever American Pope, with the aim of manipulating him as their pawn.  But as Belardo takes on the role of Pope as Pius XIII it appears that he may be the one doing the manipulating.  One of Belardo's first actions as Pope Pius XIII is to secretly command the priests who handles the Confessions of the Cardinals and other noteworthy Vatican staff to report back to him the details of each of these people's sins.  Has Belardo actually been scheming for years to rise through the Church's hierarchy?

To the surprise of the Cardinals who elected him, instead of taking a refreshing, youthful approach to directing the policies of the Church, Pius XIII announces ultra conservative, hardline initiatives that rock the Vatican status quo.  He also forsakes the guidance of the Vatican's long-time Secretary of State, Cardinal Voiello, and brings in the nun who raised him at a Catholic orphanage, Sister Mary (played by Diane Keaton), as his chief confidante and counsel.  Of course Vatican insiders begin a plot to take the Pope down trying to find dirt on him or catch him in a scandalous act to force his ouster.  As Law's character consolidates his power and executes his duties with an ironfisted authority, the story becomes a mystery about whether the young Pope is a man of conviction or one full of contradictions.

Does Pius XIII have a spiritual philosophy for leading the Church? Is a psychological disorder impacting him causing his behavior to be askew? Or is Lenny Belardo just someone who craves authority over other people to compensate for the lack of power he had when abandoned by his parents as a child?  Trying to understand this complicated character's intentions provides an intricate plot for viewers to unravel as the show progresses.

Season One of The Young Pope is now available on Digital HD.  It will be available on Blu-ray and DVD beginning June 6, 2017.  In addition to all ten episodes the Blu-ray, Digital Download, and DVD of The Young Pope -- Season One will also contain three special features including an exclusive new "The Making of The Young Pope" segment.  The Blu-ray and DVD will also include a free Digital Download.

TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE

Transformers, the toy series from Hasbro in which vehicles switch into robotic alien warriors, had a cartoon that was popular with all the neighborhood kids that aired on TV during my 1980s childhood years.  These robots in disguise have made a comeback to entertain today's generation of kids with a new animated television series.  In these adventures from Hasbro Studios, BUMBLEBEE, one of the most popular Transformer characters from the toys and movies, must lead a rogue team of AUTOBOTS to ward off a new threat to the Earth from the dastardly DECEPTICONS.  The 26 episode season of Season One for TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE just wrapped up on Cartoon Network.

Miss the first season on Cartoon Network or want to watch it all over again? Shout! Factory has just released a DVD with all 26 episodes of TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE which also has bonus segments including a San Diego Comic-Con Panel presentation, featurettes, and animated shorts. You can find the DVD for purchase at retailers such as Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart as well as on the Shout! Factory website.  A Geek Daddy also has a TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE -- SEASON ONE DVD to giveaway to one lucky blog reader or social media follower.

UPDATE: Congrats to Deb from St. Paul, MN who won the dvd giveaway.

When a CYBERTRONIAN prison ship filled with DECEPTICONS crash lands on Earth and unleashes its prisoners, BUMBLEBEE returns to the planet he once called home with a new team of AUTOBOTS - STRONGARM, SIDESWIPE, FIXIT and GRIMLOCK - to track down the escapees.  BUMBLEBEE must balance his job of fighting off evil with being equal parts squad leader and coach to a rascally team that needs constant coaxing to learn how to work together.  The results are comical when the cool rebel SIDESWIPE, elite guard cadet STRONGARM, bombastic dinobot GRIMLOCK and the overly-excited FIXIT must balance keeping the team together with chasing and capturing their new enemies in each adventure-filled episode.  Along with their new human allies, Denny and Russell, this unlikely team of robots in disguise must protect the Earth while preparing for an ominous threat suited only for a Prime.
