ABBOTT is a supernatural murder mystery set in 1970's era Detroit full of Motown vibe and occult mayhem. So downtown Detroit's Vault of Midnight was a fitting place for me to stop by to get the first issue of this comic book mini-series from Boom Studios autographed by its author Saladin Ahmed. I swung by the comic shop, bought a book, and spent a few moments chatting with the writer.
Saladin Ahmed's literary career has really taken off in recent years after his novel Throne of the Crescent Moon was nominated for a Hugo Award, which is the publishing industry's equivalent of an Oscar presented annually to the best science fiction writer of the year, and he was awarded the Locus Award for Best First Novel. Star Wars fans will appreciate that among his works, Ahmed contributed a short story to the Canto Bight: Journey to the Star Wars: The Last Jedi anthology. He just recently began writing for comic books, scripting Marvel's Black Bolt series as well as this new mini-series from Boom Studios. Both titles have been receiving praise from critics who have reviewed them. Next up, Ahmed will be writing a new Exiles series for Marvel about a group of alternate universe super heroes that dimension hop to save their reality from a variety of different threats.
Paired with Finnish artist Sami Kivela doing the artwork for this Boom Studios comic book mini-series, Ahmed told me that in ABBOTT they will try to paint Detroit's own uniqueness for audiences rather than just use generic city imagery in portraying the story. He commented that his European colleague Kivela doesn't have pre-existing biases or notions about Detroit like many Americans have and has focused on providing an authentic image of the city as a backdrop for the story. Ahmed said that the series will include actual Detroit references and locations within it. In the first issue for example, the main character walks past the real life newspapers, Detroit Free Press and Detroit News, on her way to work at the fictional Detroit Daily. Ahmed remarked to me that people familiar with the city of Detroit will enjoy seeing that its island park, Belle Isle, will be prominently featured in the mini-series third issue. As someone who has lived in the area a majority of my life, I'm going to enjoy reading through these comics looking for the realistic touches of Detroit being included within the artwork and script.
The story revolves around a female journalist of color named Elena Abbott who is investigating a series of grisly crimes that the police seem to be ignoring -- crimes that appear to be the same as a dark magical force that murdered her husband 10 years prior to the ones currently taking place. As she searches for clues, Abbott finds herself in the cross hairs of an occultist menace with a thirst for causing death. Adding to the tension of the story is its setting at a point in time when Detroit is just beginning its downward spiral of urban decay from which the city is just now beginning to emerge from.
This historical context combined with the paranormal investigative and noir detective story aspects of this comic book makes ABBOTT a compelling read. I really enjoyed the first issue and encourage you to check out this Boom Studios series filled with shadowy magic and social conflict. You can pick up print issues of ABBOTT from a local comic book shop like Vault of Midnight or purchase a digital version to read from comixology.

It Was The Wednesday Before Christmas & New Holiday Themed Comics Appeared On Store Shelves
I always enjoy stopping by a comic book shop on Wednesdays which is the day new weekly releases are placed on store shelves. It is always a fun break to check out all the cover artwork and see what interesting stories are out. With Christmas being just a few days away, it was nice to see publishers were still releasing a few holiday themed treats for consumers to enjoy:
KLAUS & THE WITCH OF WINTER -- Boom Studios
Klaus returns for an epic oversized one-shot, perfect for any comic fan's stocking! Brought to you by legendary creator Grant Morrison and 2016 Russ Manning Award winner Dan Mora, join the continuing adventures through space and time of the man that would become Santa Claus.
HARLEY QUINN -- DC Comics
Come spend the holidays with Harley in issue #10's collection of wintry short stories-just don't expect to make it to New Year's in one piece!
LUCIFER -- DC Comics
It's a LUCIFER holiday special! Forget coal-this nice 'n' naughty issue is your reward for a year of indulgent misdeeds with the devil. Writers Holly Black and Richard Kadrey team up to deliver a darkly festive and irreverent ode to the joy of seasonal sin and twisted Secret Santas.
X-FILE X-MAS SPECIAL 2016 -- IDW Publishing
When a school holiday pageant takes an extraterrestrial turn, Mulder must contend with old ghosts, present dangers, and close encounters yet to come. But this is no cookie-cutter Christmas Carol. Together with Scully, and a host of holiday visitors and visitations, they'll rediscover the spirit of the season... if they can only survive the night. Executive produced by The X-Files creator Chris Carter!
POWER MAN & IRON FIST SWEET CHRISTMAS ANNUAL -- Marvel
YOU BETTER NOT POUT, YOU BETTER NOT CRY! 'Cause you're getting an extra helping of POWER MAN AND IRON FIST! This Christmas will be sweet, indeed! But not for Luke Cage, who is feeling neither holly nor jolly. Surely Danny can change that! Or maybe these demonic toys will! Wait, demonic toys?! OH, NO!
Drink a glass of egg nog sitting by an open crackling fire while you appreciate the joy of reading a comic book during the Christmas holiday break. Is there a favorite comic book that you like to pull out to read this time of year?

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2016
It's become an annual family tradition that we swing by the
local comic book store on the first Saturday morning in May to enjoy FREE COMIC BOOK DAY.
This is a special event hosted by comic book retailers and publishers
to entice new customers and reward existing ones for their loyalty.
Free Comic Book Day provides a selection of specially printed issues for this event that provide a sample of a publishers work or
an interesting one-shot story to promote a particular character or
series. This year there will be 50 free comic books that people can
select from and pick up from participating locations on Saturday, May 7, 2016. A nice aspect of this annual event is that there are always a variety of comics to select from that will be of interest to children, teens and adults so there is something for everyone in the family to pick up and bring home to enjoy.Comic books catering to children this year include DC Super Hero Girls, the Pink Panther, Strawberry Shortcake, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Pokemon. Boom Studios always provides a nice comic book for youths to enjoy and this year's Summer Blast 2016, which features original stories of Dave Peterson's Mouse Guard and Jim Henson's Labyrinth, continues their streak of providing quality content on Free Comic Book Day.
Tweens and Teens will want to get their hands on Bongo Comic's Simpsons, IDW Publishing's ROM, Marvel's Avengers and Captain America Free Comic Book Day editions, and Image Comic's Camp Midnight.
Adults stopping by themselves or along with their kids should look out for Bruce Lee: The Dragon Rises, Con Man! Spectrum, Dark Horse Comics' Serenity/Hellboy/Aliens compilation, Doctor Who: Four Doctors, and The Phantom 80th Anniversary Special. For the ladies in attendance this Mothers Day Weekend, Lady Mechanika and Grump Cat are two titles that have a large female fan base you may want to check out.
Adding an educational aspect to Free Comic Book Day, March provides a historical look at the 1960s civil rights movement from Congressman and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient John Lewis, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund provides a social studies lesson about the First Amendment in Defend, and Science Comics contains non-fiction stories that help explain how the world works.
The highlight of Free Comic Book Day is always picking up the special issue published for the event featuring one of my all time favorite super hero characters THE TICK. He's back again in 2016 with a 32 page full-color comic book featuring a brand new lead story that is being published for the first time in honor of Free Comic Book Day. SPOON!!!
2016 is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY'S 15th Anniversary and will be the fifth year in a row our family will be stopping by our local comic book shop to enjoy some freebies. To participate yourself, visit FreeComicBookDay.com and use the website's Store Locator to find local participating retailers in proximity to your zip code. Because of the increasing popularity of the event, you should contact participating locations in advance to confirm their hours, what their rules are (some stores let you take one of every available title while others limit peoples' selections to just 1 or 2 of the Free Comic Book Day publications), and if they are hosting any special events in conjunction with the comic books giveaway (artist signings, character appearances, costume contests, store discounts, etc.) to be prepared. Throw on your favorite sci-fi or super hero t-shirt, grab the kids and have some fun enjoying the comic book genre on Saturday, May 7, 2016.

ABIGAIL & THE SNOWMAN
It was always a thrill when my mom took me to the store as a kid and let me pick up a few comic books so it is a little disappointing when I pop in to my favorite spot to pick up some now and see the place filled with 30 to 60 year old guys and gals with no trace of anyone who has probably had to do homework for years. Now that may be do to changes in tech ... kids get their stories through video games, television, and digital publications versus old fashioned paper and ink book ... or the price of a comic (I could buy them for .50 / .65 / .75 cents a pop as a nine year old versus it costing $2.99 to $4.99 or more now to purchase just one book) which is where I have to admit contributing to the kids free zone myself because I occasionally take my children to the comic book store with me and buy them something but really can't afford to get them hooked on a series plus pick up some of the items I want to read on a regular basis too so more often than not leave them at home myself rather than entice them with cool stuff they can't have or spend a paycheck at the store so everyone leaves happy. In a few years when my kids are older and more proficient readers, I'll probably take a break from what has become an indulgence to take my mind away from some of the headaches of work/life and either buy comic books just for them to read or not at all for awhile as not to be too selfish on how I'm spending money. That being said if I see a fun comic book that is appropriate for our whole family to sit down and enjoy reading together, I'll probably always pick it up to buy. One example of that is the brand new comic book mini-series ABIGAIL & THE SNOWMAN which had its first issue of a 4 part story arc just released on December 31, 2014.
Published by the kaboom! imprint of Boom Studios which is targeted at producing comic books for young audiences this story will thrill both kids and parents alike. If you want to enjoy the comic book medium with your children, pick up this series, snuggle the family together and enjoy a quirky and humorous adventure story that people of all ages can enjoy together. As a parent, I wish there were more comic books like ABIGAIL & THE SNOWMAN for families with kindergarten and elementary school ages children that are filled with inspiring artwork and tales providing a more grown up format to expanding upon the story board books so popularly read to kids at preschool and library circle times.
ABIGAIL AND THE SNOWMAN begins with a young nine year old girl named Abigail moving to the quiet little town called Shipton-On-Sea. As she is exploring and becoming accustomed to her new surroundings, she shockingly bumps into a yeti on the run. The yeti, officially known as Specimen 486, has escaped from the government's Ministry of Unusual Phenomena (oh by the way this story is set in Great Britain) and is alluding these mysterious Shadow Men ( government agents ) that want to return him back. After affirming that Specimen 486 is really a yeti, Abigail agrees to help the snowman return home. How does a little girl help a snowman travel from Britain to his real home a world away? You'll have to read this comic book mini-series to find out!
Written and illustrated by Roger Langridge whose family friendly comic book resume includes THE MUPPET SHOW COMIC BOOK and JIM HENSON'S THE MUSICAL MONSTERS OF TURKEY HOLLOW this mini-series will remind kids of wacky adventures of LILO & STITCH or MONSTERS INC while its artwork will trigger fond memories of CALVIN & HOBBES style humor for parents. Don't miss picking up ABIGAIL AND THE SNOWMAN #1 at your favorite comic book retailer now!

STAR TREK goes to the APES
With the recent box office successes of the movies RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, the Planet of the Apes franchise is a hot commodity again. Based upon that renewed popularity, BOOM! STUDIOS the publisher of Planet of the Apes comic books is hoping to have the apes explode off the printed page by creating an epic crossover miniseries with another classic SciFi brand STAR TREK. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to "mind-meld" with a sentient ape...I have to say I haven't but I am sure there are some folk out there who have...or wanted to see a Klingon on horseback brandishing a rifle? Boom! Studios threw out those scenarios when it announced at Comic Con that its partnering with IDW Publishers, who holds the comic book license for Star Trek, to present an alternate future where Star Trek and Planet of the Apes crossover.
IDW will publish the mini-series which will pair the original U.S.S. Enterprise crew with Taylor, Nova, and the cast of the original Planet of the Apes film. This will mark the first time Boom! Studios has partnered with another publisher for a comic book series. Together they will bring Star Trek, licensed by CBS Consumer Products, and 20th Century Fox's Planet of the Apes together in a product the publishers exclaim will delight existing fans of these two franchises and create new fans for each of these two brands.
In a press release IDW President & Chief Operating Officer, Greg Goldstein and Boom! Studios Founder and CEO Ross Richie comments on this upcoming min-series which they called the "crossover event of the year."
"Planet of the Apes and Star Trek are groundbreaking science-fiction properties and both deal with many of the same social issues and themes,” Greg Goldstein noted. “A crossover between the two is a natural and long overdue.”
“Before I could read comic books as a child, I could watch science fiction on my television. My dad used to wake me up way past my bedtime to watch Star Trek in syndication—it came on after the nightly news—and I took a Planet of the Apes lunchbox with me to kindergarten every day,” said Ross Richie. “Suffice to say, teaming up these two titans of science fiction on the page in a way that they probably will never meet each other on the silver screen is a huge moment for me personally and emotionally.”
The creative team on this project will be a mix of veteran comic authors Scott and David Tipton scripting the series and the interior and cover art being created by British newcomer Rachael Stott. The Tipton's recently worked on another high profile Star Trek cross-over with the recent Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who mini-series that IDW published.
“With the Klingons secretly backing a renegade gorilla general in a coup for control of Ape City, Captain Kirk finds himself in the uncomfortable position of having to help out Dr. Zaius’ orangutans,” explains David Tipton. “Taylor won’t be happy with that!”
“What an epic pairing! I’m so excited to see Taylor, Kirk…and those damned dirty apes…in our upcoming comic,” says IDW editor Sarah Gaydos, “We’re eager to team up these exciting creative forces to bring this to life.”
