XINO IS COMING

Sci-Fi fanatics will want to look into the future so that they don't miss out when the first issue of the XINO limited series of science fiction themed stories hits comic book shop shelves on June 14, 2023. Some of Oni Press' top artists and authors will be contributing to the three-issue series which the publisher promises to be "intra-ocular lozenges of subversive, psych-surrealist science fiction."

"All comics, at their best, do one simple thing: Embed themselves into your psyche like razor-sharp shards hurtled from an alternate dimension. Each and every creator in XINO is bringing their A-game to fulfill that purpose and tell stories that distort and destroy expectations at each turn," President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson commented to ageekdaddy.com. "Each issue is packed with potent and powerful content – and is definitely not for the faint of heart."

XINO #1 will feature three stories within the 40 pages of this sci-fi spotlight of Oni Press talent:
  • Rising stars Melissa Flores (The Dead Lucky, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) & Daniel Irizarri (Judge Dredd) surgically activate the hidden dimensions of the human senses;
  •  Cult phenoms Christopher Condon (That Texas Blood) and Nick Cagnetti (Pink Lemonade) debut the world's first intravenous video game system;

UFO S.H.A.D.O. Technical Operations Manual

UFO SHADO Technical Operations Manual

The year is 1980 and Earth's population is being targeted by covert incursions by an alien race visiting from a dying planet. They are secretly abducting humans to harvest their organs to replenish their decaying alien bodies and doing reconnaissance for an intergalactic invasion of the planet. These cosmic interlopers have been discovered though and a secret, high-technology international military agency called SHADO (an acronym for Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization) has been established by the governments of the United Kingdom, the United States, the Soviet Union, France and Germany to defend Earth and humanity against the mysterious foes while at the same time keeping the threat of an alien invasion hidden from the public.

This is the premise of Gerry Anderson’s 1970 British cult sci-fi series UFO which will explode to life again with the November 14, 2022, release of the UFO: S.H.A.D.O. Technical Operations Manual. Written by Chris Thompson and Andrew Clements, and published by Anderson Entertainment, the UFO: S.H.A.D.O. Technical Operations Manual immerses readers in the Sci-Fi classic show. Across the oversized (11.8" x 9" x 1") and lavishly illustrated (150+ brand-new illustrations) hardcover book’s 208 pages, Thompson and Clements explore S.H.A.D.O.’s history, introduce readers to the show’s inventive vehicles and equipment via illustrations and blueprints, and share an overview of everything known about the dangerous unidentified aliens.

UFO SHADO book

I know they are based on fantasy, but I love flipping through the pages of technical manuals that delve into the worlds of science fiction stories learning about equipment, weapons and vehicles as if they were real. My library includes a number of these type of books referencing Star Trek and Star Wars technology and I'd be geeked to add this UFO: S.H.A.D.O. Technical Operations Manual to my collection. For more information on how to purchase this upcoming book, head over to gerryanderson.com

Not only does this book provide some interesting Sci-Fi content, but I also find it interesting as a history geek to be able to look back into the 1970s perspective of how it was envisioned the world would be like a decade later now that we in a point in time where we've leaped into a new century and the 1980s seem to have been a long time ago. We are in a time where the original viewers of UFO would have considered a distant future. What do you think people fifty years from now will think of today's science fiction movies and television shows?

Galaxy Quest The Inside Story

Inspired by Star Trek actors who seemed forever type cast into their role, David Howard an office temp by day and aspiring writer by night who moved to California with the dream of making it big in Hollywood penned a screenplay called "Captain Starshine." It was the story of "a guy hopelessly mired in the role of being a sci-fi hero." The chance of his script being picked up by a Hollywood studio was 1 in 10,000 but five years later his story now named "Galaxy Quest" was showing on movie theater screens around the world and featured a stellar cast that included Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver and Tony Shalhoub.

DUNE IMAX POSTER

DUNE promises to be a BIG movie! It is being theatrically released in October as well as have a simultaneous debut on the HBO Max streaming service. And while you may be able to see the movie from home streaming it on your television this is a flick you are going to want to see on IMAX!

IMAX just debuted their promotional poster for the movie and I'm sure a lot of sci-fi fans are going to be geeked to see this movie on the big IMAX screens at theaters. I've heard the sets for the film were so big that actors got lost while moving around them. Plus you want to see those big sand worms tower over the audience on the silver screen. This science fiction movie has so many big elements to it seeing it on IMAX is the way to go.

DUNE is based upon is one of the most popular science fiction novels ever published, written by author Frank Herbert in 1965. The book tied with Roger Zelazny's This Immortal for the Hugo Award [recognizing the best in science fiction] and also won Nebula Award for Best Novel. The story was adapted into a movie in 1984 that bombed at the box office. I've never read DUNE or its five sequel novels and didn't like the 1984 film which featured Kyle MacLachlan, Sting, Virginia Madsen, and Patrick Stewart; but I know bunch of fans of the books and insist that if this new movie faithfully follows Herbert's story it will be extraordinary. So I'm all in for seeing Warner Bros. DUNE directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival / Blade Runner 2049) when it arrive on IMAX screens this fall.

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, DUNE tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

For more information, visit the film's official website dunemovie.com or its social media accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Look for IMAX movie theater locations at imax.com. And if you aren't following a Geek Daddy on social media check out @Geekdad248 on Twitter and Instagram.

SCI FI REIMAGINING OF JULES VERNE NOVEL

Image Comics

Author Jules Verne (1828 - 1905) set the foundation for the action adventures and science fiction stories enjoyed today by writing novels such as Around the World in 80 Days, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. He explored technological themes when many of these topics were fantasies rather than the reality we know today. To his credit many of Jules Verne's stories are still amazing to read even though they are more than a hundred years old and I've encouraged my kids to pickup some of his titles when selecting library books to bring home. Captain Nemo isn't just the name of my favorite sub shop, he is an incredible literary figure created by Jules Verne.

Stopping by my local comic book store to look for something new and interesting to read, I discovered LIGHTHOUSE by Image Comics. This comic book is a reimagining of a lesser known Jules Verne novel "The Lighthouse at the End of the World." It takes an adventurous tale set in a time on Earth filled with wooden sailing ships and pirates and retells it with a science fiction twist featuring rocket ships in outer space.

lighthouse comic review

Jules Verne's "Lighthouse" is set in the 1850s in a time before the Panama Canal when rickety sailing ships from Europe and the East Coast of the United States must make a hazardous voyage around South America's Cape Horn to get to the West Coast of America and Asia. To try and make the voyage safer a lighthouse is built along the ocean coast of Argentina to assist passing ships in navigating treacherous waters. A small skeleton crew maintains this lighthouse built at the "End of the World" and is relieved by new staff to maintain the facility via a supply ship which visits every three months.

The story begins with head lighthouse keeper Vasquez along with helpers Moriz and Felipe beginning their shift in this out of the way local. Shortly after the supply ship departs though there is a new arrival at the lighthouse ... Pirates! They plan to utilize the lighthouse to wreck ships instead of guide them. The pirates will then scavenge the wrecks for booty.

The pirates quickly dispatch Moriz and Felipe but Vasquez escapes into the wilderness surrounding the lighthouse. Vasquez then struggles to stay alive while also circumventing the pirates efforts to utilize the lighthouse to misguide passing ships into crashing their vessels. Can Vasquez hold out until the supply ship arrives with help?

Jules Verne Lighthouse

Image Comics "Lighthouse" takes the plot of the 1850s era Jules Verne novel and sets it in a distant future sci fi setting. This lighthouse is a giant super computer on a space station in a far off corner of the galaxy that assists space ships in navigating transit through wormholes which allow mankind to travel millions of light years in short periods of time. Without this space station to guide ships traveling via wormholes is very tricky and dangerous. The lighthouse though has made traveling throughout outer space almost routine.

At the edge of the galaxy, there is a giant supercomputer known as the Lighthouse. The only brain powerful enough to navigate ships through a sargasso of naturally occurring wormholes, potentially cutting months or even years off a spaceship’s journey. Three humans, one alien, and a nanny bot have manned the remote station for years in relative peace until the arrival of Captain Kongre and his band of cutthroat pirates threatens the future of civilization and reveals that each of the Lighthouse crew has been hiding a shocking secret.

Like in Jules Verne's original story, the small crew maintaining this remote space station finds itself highjacked by pirates. Why try and take over ships when they can just crash them into asteroids and scavenge the wrecks with help from the Lighthouse. This comic book adaption of the Jules Verne "Lighthouse at the End of the World" adds a sci fi twist to the plot and takes the story off in a few different directions from the original novel adding some originality to the inspiration material.

Geek Daddy

Image Comics' first issue in a 5-part mini series is on comic shop shelves now. Featuring captivating artwork by Brian Haberlin and a fun science fiction spin on a classic adventure tale with this adaption written by David Hine, I'm enjoying reading the first installment of Image Comics Lighthouse which starts off the mini-series with a double-sized issue. I'm geeked to keep reading the rest of the Lighthouse story from Image Comics!

STAR TRECK TRIDIMENSIONAL CHESS SET

Play chess like Captain Kirk, Spock and the crew of the starship Enterprise did with this screen accurate as seen on the original Star Trek television series game set available now from The Noble Collection. Enjoy a sci-fi angle to this classic game of strategy as players utilize a three dimensional chess board. While the rules are fairly similar to standard chess play there are some 23rd Century adaptions for science fiction fans to geek out over with the tridimensional layout of the game as well as the addition of mobile board sections that are in motion throughout a match. There are new rules to expand the fun of your matches to where no chess game you've played has gone before!

My son and I have been having some good times battling one another in Star Trek Tridimensional Chess. It takes a few games to get down moving up and down in addition to across the chess board. Plus your opponent being able to move board segments offensively and defensively adds an extra dimension of strategy that takes some getting use to. But once you have a few matches under your belt the game becomes comfortable to play and really isn't that intricate to get a grasp on.

The Noble Collection's Star Trek Tridimensional Chess Set looks just like the one played by Captain Kirk and Spock on the tv show but it isn't just a prop replica. It is a fully playable game adapting chess rules that has provided my family with numerous exciting bouts in our basement game room. Whether you are a chess player or Star Trek fan this game is a great addition to incorporate into your family game nights. Plus it makes an incredible addition for anyone who has Star Trek themed decor in a home or office.

The Star Trek Chess Set is approximately 13 inches tall and features translucent acrylic elevated game boards. 32 diecast game pieces representing traditional chess pawns, bishops, rooks, knights, kings and queens are included with the set. It takes about five minutes to set up the chess set out of the box and begin playing though as I said it may take a few matches before you completely get the new game rules mastered. Once you get the game down this is an energetic, exciting version of chess to play.

SNOW PIERCER

Warner Bros Home Entertainment provided this dad blogger a free Blu-ray. Opinions expressed are my own.

Hasn't been much of a winter when it comes to snow fall this year but a bunch of it has just been dumped on us by some recent storms. Winter weather conditions made today a snow day with our local roads impassible this morning but by the afternoon our local DPW had done an excellent job of digging us out. So my daughter and I bundled up and hit the sledding hill for the first time in awhile. We had a lot of fun getting outside and racing down the slopes!

After we got home it seemed a fitting day to watch this sci-fi tv series I've been wanting to see but couldn't because we cut our cable and it is broadcast on TNT. Now that the first season is available on Blu-ray, I'm finally going to be able to catch up with what is going on in SNOWPIERCER! I'm going to binge watch it tonight after the kids go to bed.

Set almost a decade after the world has become a frozen wasteland, SNOWPIERCER revolves around the remnants of humanity who inhabit a perpetually moving train, with 1,001 cars, that circles the globe. Class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival play out in this television adaption of a graphic novel series. Yeah it may seem like a goofy premise but it based upon a comic book full of sci-fi goodness! Plus the show stars Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind) and Grammy & Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs (Hamilton).

You can pick up SNOWPIERCER: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON on Blu-ray or DVD at Best Buy to add to your home entertainment video library. Purchase it via a Geek Daddy affiliate link and this dad blogger will receive a small commission at no additional expense to you. Your support of ageekdaddy.com is appreciated!

AD ASTRA

Fox Home Entertainment provided the featured product for promotional consideration

I was bummed that I didn't get a chance to see AD ASTRA when it was in theaters. So this sci-fi fan is excited that the film is now available to add to your home entertainment video library. Thanks to Fox Home Entertainment for providing me a digital code so I can watch it on Vudu. Looking forward to grabbing some popcorn and relaxing on the couch to watch this flick!

The premise of AD ASTRA is that thirty years prior to the start of the movie's events, Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones) led a voyage into deep space, but the ship and crew were never heard from again. Now his son Roy (Brad Pitt) -- a fearless astronaut -- must embark on a daring mission to Neptune to uncover the truth about his missing father and a mysterious power surge that threatens the stability of the universe.

AD ASTRA has elements of science fiction hits 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and The Martian (2015) wrapped in its own original story. I appreciate that from seeing the trailer it seems this sci-fi adventure is portrayed with an intent to provide a realistic envisioning of future space travel to make the fantasy aspects of the adventure more compelling and believable to audiences. I'm geeked about watching AD ASTRA!

The movie is now available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and online Digital services such as Vudu and MoviesAnywhere. If you purchase the movie from Best Buy through a link in this post, it may generate a small commission to support this dad blogger at no additional expense to you. ABBOTT

ABBOTT is a supernatural murder mystery set in 1970's era Detroit full of Motown vibe and occult mayhem.  So downtown Detroit's Vault of Midnight was a fitting place for me to stop by to get the first issue of this comic book mini-series from Boom Studios autographed by its author Saladin Ahmed.  I swung by the comic shop, bought a book, and spent a few moments chatting with the writer.

Saladin Ahmed's literary career has really taken off in recent years after his novel Throne of the Crescent Moon was nominated for a Hugo Award, which is the publishing industry's equivalent of an Oscar presented annually to the best science fiction writer of the year, and he was awarded the Locus Award for Best First Novel.  Star Wars fans will appreciate that among his works, Ahmed contributed a short story to the Canto Bight: Journey to the Star Wars: The Last Jedi anthology.  He just recently began writing for comic books, scripting Marvel's Black Bolt series as well as this new mini-series from Boom Studios. Both titles have been receiving praise from critics who have reviewed them.  Next up, Ahmed will be writing a new Exiles series for Marvel about a group of alternate universe super heroes that dimension hop to save their reality from a variety of different threats.

Paired with Finnish artist Sami Kivela doing the artwork for this Boom Studios comic book mini-series, Ahmed told me that in ABBOTT they will try to paint Detroit's own uniqueness for audiences rather than just use generic city imagery in portraying the story.  He commented that his European colleague Kivela doesn't have pre-existing biases or notions about Detroit like many Americans have and has focused on providing an authentic image of the city as a backdrop for the story. Ahmed said that the series will include actual Detroit references and locations within it.  In the first issue for example, the main character walks past the real life newspapers, Detroit Free Press and Detroit News, on her way to work at the fictional Detroit Daily.  Ahmed remarked to me that people familiar with the city of Detroit will enjoy seeing that its island park, Belle Isle, will be prominently featured in the mini-series third issue. As someone who has lived in the area a majority of my life,  I'm going to enjoy reading through these comics looking for the realistic touches of Detroit being included within the artwork and script.

The story revolves around a female journalist of color named Elena Abbott who is investigating a series of grisly crimes that the police seem to be ignoring -- crimes that appear to be the same as a dark magical force that murdered her husband 10 years prior to the ones currently taking place.  As she searches for clues, Abbott finds herself in the cross hairs of an occultist menace with a thirst for causing death.  Adding to the tension of the story is its setting at a point in time when Detroit is just beginning its downward spiral of urban decay from which the city is just now beginning to emerge from.

This historical context combined with the paranormal investigative and noir detective story aspects of this comic book makes ABBOTT a compelling read. I really enjoyed the first issue and encourage you to check out this Boom Studios series filled with shadowy magic and social conflict.  You can pick up print issues of ABBOTT from a local comic book shop like Vault of Midnight or purchase a digital version to read from comixology.

STARGATE ORIGINS SWEEPSTAKES

Stargate is one of my all-time favorite television shows!  I've seen every episode of all three TV series (SG-1 / Stargate Atlantis / Stargate Universe ) that were spun off from the 1994 film and the franchise played a major role in maintaining my passion for science fiction through my early adult years after being a Star Wars fan as a kid. So it has been really disappointing not to have any new television shows or movies to enjoy since the last series, Stargate Universe, was cancelled in 2012 after having spent more than a decade investing my time and interest in the franchise.  So it was exciting to hear that MGM, the studio behind the franchise, has created an online streaming subscription service called Stargate Command where fans can watch all those past episodes again.

That's not all though!  Stargate Command is creating some new content as well!  They are producing a new mini-series called STARGATE ORIGINS that will only be available to view through an all-access subscription to Stargate CommandSTARGATE ORIGINS goes back in time and uncovers an unexpected adventure revolving around the initial discovery of the Stargate by archeologists in Egypt.  They must unlock the mystery of what lies beyond the Stargate in order to save the Earth from a dark threat.  I have to tell you my interest is peeked!

To promote the launch of Stargate Command, COMET TV, which is also a subsidiary of MGM,  is hosting an incredible sweepstakes.  They are giving one lucky winner the chance to come to Los Angeles and attend a private screening of STARGATE ORIGINS before it premieres on Stargate Command! But wait… The winner will also get the opportunity to meet select cast members as well!  How cool is that?! I want to win this myself!!!

CLICK HERE to enter the COMET TV Stargate ORIGINS Sweepstakes.  One grand prize winner will win a trip for two to Los Angeles, a two-night stay in Beverly Hills, two subscriptions passes to the Stargate Command Website, two passes to a private screening of Stargate Origins with select cast members and two COMET TV gift bags! In addition, one hundred Second Place winners will win a subscription pass to the Stargate: Command streaming service.

Family Movie Night: THE SPACE BETWEEN US

Thanks to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment we were able to enjoy THE SPACE BETWEEN US for a Family Movie Night a few days before its May 16, 2017 release on Blu-ray and DVD.  The film is a lighthearted teenage romance flick set within a sci-fi movie which takes audiences on an out-of-this world journey.  It provides a glimpse of the Earth from a human who is visiting the planet for the first time and has to make you wonder about how those of us living here take so much for granted when it comes to appreciating our world.

THE SPACE BETWEEN US is the story of sixteen year old Gardner Elliot who is the first human born on Mars, living his whole live with a team of scientists on the red planet.  He's always longed to see Earth to seek out the father he's never known and to meet a girl named Tulsa who he has befriended through the Internet.  He finally gets the chance to visit Earth and see Tulsa in person, but during his stay doctors discover Gardner's heart can't withstand Earth's atmosphere.  Before being sent back to Mars, he and Tulsa slip away and embark on a cross-country adventure to take in experiencing the world around them and search for his father before time runs out.

This is an enjoyable movie to enjoy while lounging out on the couch eating a bowl of popcorn on a lazy weekend.  Don't take it too seriously and appreciate it for being a cheesy romantic adventure and you'll have fun watching it.  Rated PG-13 because of its romantic theme and foul language that includes damn, dick, ass and crap there really isn't anything too objectionable in the movie for parent to be overly concerned about their kids seeing.  Younger viewers may not want to watch it because the boyfriend-girlfriend dynamic of the show may make them go "ew!"  Embracing love is an overarching premise of the movie that viewers will either appreciate or mock at.  Not to be lost in the romantic elements of the movie though is that THE SPACE BETWEEN US has a very important message within it.  Appreciate the incredible beauty of the Earth!
