SHOUT STUDIOS THE MAGIC FLUTE MOVIE

Upon his father's death, Tim Walker (Jack Wolfe) is granted admission to an exclusive Hogwarts-style boarding school in the Shout! Studios move The Magic Flute. This school though doesn't train its students to be magicians but rather musicians. The Mozart School, founded by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with a reputation for developing the most gifted opera singers in the world, has a stern curriculum and is intensely competitive; but is also enchanting place.

Tim has dreamed of attending his father's alma mater, Mozart All Boys Music School, but gets off to a rough start when his aspirations become a reality when a hostile headmaster (F. Murray Abraham) confronts the boy about the authenticity of his singing voice. To show that he belongs at Mozart, Tim decides to try out for the lead role in the student body's production of The Magic Flute, against the headmaster's objections. 

While preparing for the role, magical spirits lead Tim to a mystical gateway in the school's library that transports him to a fantasyland where he lives out the story of The Magic Flute opera. Assuming the identity of Prince Tamino, Tim embarks on an adventure to save the Princess Pamina. The three child spirits that led Tim to the mystical gateway are the same that inspired Mozart during his composing of The Magic Flute and are featured in the opera. They lead Tim through adversity and give him the confidence to tackle the role of Prince Tamino in the school production when he returns to his normal reality. 

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was 35 years old when he began work on the opera The Magic Flute, based on a libretto by Emanuel Schikandeder, in the Spring of 1791. The opera debuted that Fall in Vienna and sadly was one of Mozart's last works as he passed away in December of that year. This movie shares the stories and songs from The Magic Flute with the feel of watching a Harry Potter or Percy Jackson film rather than sitting through an opera performance. This makes The Magic Flute more amicable for kids and teens to want to take in. My family enjoyed Shout! Studios The Magic Flute and it made for a nice movie night. 

In an interesting bit of Mozart movie trivia, F. Murray Abraham, who played the antagonist Salieri in Milos Forman's film Amadeus (1984), is the headmaster of the Mozart boarding school in The Magic Flute. Abraham won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as Salieri and Amadeus also won the Oscar for Best Picture.

Another tidbit of trivia is that many of the scenes in The Magic Flute were filmed in Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Some of the locations in The Magic Flute were also in the musical The Sound of Music (1965) with Julie Andrews. Look to see if you can spot The Sound of Music locations while watching The Magic Flute for some extra fun.

The Magic Flute is now available to view on Blu-ray, Digital and DVD. An educational and entertaining selection for a family movie night. PUSS IN BOOTS FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT

A mystery box courtesy of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment arrived at our doorstep the other day. What could be inside?! Wow! A box full of free goodies for a Puss in Boots family movie night!

The leche-loving, swashbuckling, fearless feline, Puss in Boots returns for a brand-new animated movie adventure along with his former partner and nemesis Kitty Softpaws as well as a new sidekick tritagonist Perro who adds some canine hijinks into the cats' death-defying quest. PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH COLLECTOR'S EDITION is now available to add to your home entertainment video library on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. The movie is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for action/violence, rude language and scary moments.

The home entertainment edition of PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH COLLECTOR'S EDITION includes over an hour of bonus content. These include an all new short titled THE TRIDENT along with featurettes delving into the movies cast of characters and behind the scenes details about making this animated flick. Of course, it also has deleted scenes too which we've come to expect on home video releases of movies. 

We had a fun night spending some quality family time watching the new Puss in Boots movie and enjoying the goodies Universal Pictures Home Entertainment sent our way. They sent a nice Paint by Numbers art project that my daughter won the opportunity to be the one to add a splash of color to it in a rock, paper, scissors competition between her, my wife and my son. I'm going to hold onto this quality painter apron they sent for my tabletop gaming hobby. I've been painting a lot of miniature game pieces lately for Deadzone, Dodos Riding Dinos, Marvel United, Star Wars Legion and Zombicide. This painting bib will really come in handy!

Our family movie night fun pack also included a bunch of activity sheets with crosswords, puzzles and mazes that we had fun with before watching PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH on the Blu-ray that was also included with our goodies. We also enjoyed flipping through The Art of Puss in Boots book that was included in our family movie night box. This 184 page hardcover book is really impressive, especially for people like me who have an appreciation of the concept art used in the creation of movies.

The Art of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish shows hundreds of character designs and concept art from the making of the movie, along with exclusive interviews from the writers, artists, and filmmakers who brought this story to life. It also features a foreword from Antonio Banderas. This book provides a glimpse into the creative process from the film and celebrates the character's history in the Shrek universe. Movie geeks are sure to appreciate this insiders guide to how Puss in Boots has been brought to life in his cinematic adventures.

The kids also enjoyed snuggling these plushes of Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws and Perro while we watched the movie. The first Puss in Boots that came out in 2011 was one of the first films we took them to go see in a movie theater. I still remember my 3-year old daughter yelling out in the theater "bad kitty!" during one scene when Puss in Boots wasn't behaving himself. Seeing the two of them playing around with these plush toys during our family movie night brought back some nice memories. We had just gone to their high school orientation night a few days earlier and as they are nearing graduation from middle school it was hard to believe time has flown by so fast. So, the Puss in Boots character does hold a special place in our family's hearts.

As my kids are teenagers now, I wasn't sure how much they'd actually be into watching animated movies anymore. We tend to watch more superhero and science fiction movies these days then cartoon fairy tales. My wife and I were both shocked when our fourteen year old son said he thought PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH was better than the ANT-MAN & THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA and AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER which are two of  the most recent films we've seen at theaters. In fact, he's watched PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH twice more since our family movie night and been talking about his favorite moments from the show with us a lot. My son's enjoyment of the movie alone earns it a Geek Daddy nod of approval.

In PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH, the feline outlaw discovers that his passion for adventure and heroic missions have taken their toll. Puss has burned through eight of his nine lives, though he lost count along the way. Getting those lives back will send Puss in Boots into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star on his most grandiose quest yet. 

With only one life left, Puss is forced to humble himself and ask for help from his former lover and nemesis: Kitty Softpaws. They are joined in their journey by a chatty and cheerful mutt named Perro. Together this trio of heroes will need to stay one step ahead of the fairy tale realm's craftiest crooks including Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

STRANGE WORLD

After unwrapping our presents this morning and driving over the river and through the woods to grandma's house for Christmas dinner, my family had one last holiday present to enjoy today courtesy of Walt Disney Animation Studios who sent this Geek Daddy a download code for a digital copy of their movie STRANGE WORLD. LYLE LYLE CROCODILE

We had a fantastic family movie night watching LYLE, LYLE CROCODILE courtesy of Sony Pictures providing us with an advance copy of the movie before its official December 13 home video release on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. I actually wasn't expecting to like LYLE, LYLE CROCODILE as much as I did to be honest thinking it would be more focused towards entertaining the young children that the book which inspired the movie was written for. This movie though will actually captivate audiences of all ages! The adults in our family as well as our teen kids all thought LYLE, LYLE CROCODILE was great.

My family loves the Paddington movies that mix in a mischievous cgi bear with live action. This film has the same setup and many similarities when it comes to an orphaned animal being adopted by an off-kilter family leading to humorous scenarios that ultimately result in everyone's attitudes and spirits being uplifted. In this movie though it isn't a bear from darkest Peru but rather a singing crocodile that is the star of the show.

LYLE, LYLE CROCODILE is elevated beyond the funny hijink of a friendly crocodile living in the city by also including toe-tapping musical sequences. The entertaining songs incorporated into the movie soundtrack provide an energetic vibe to the film. Plus, LYLE, LYLE CROCODILE is filled with original, new music from the songwriters of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. I really have to say BRAVO to the music in this movie!

LYLE, LYLE CROCODILE is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America. The MPAA rating is for mild peril and thematic elements. As a dad have to say in my opinion this movie is all ages friendly without anything parents should really be worried about a child seeing. A great film for a family movie night!

In LYLE, LYLE CROCODILE when the Primm family moves to New York City their young son Josh struggles to adapt to his new school and make friends. All of that changes when he discovers Lyle -- a singing crocodile who loves baths, caviar and great music -- living in the attic of his new home. The boy and crocodile become close friends, but when Lyle is threatened by evil neighbor Mr. Grumps, the Primm's must band together with the crocodile's charismatic and aloof owner, Hector P. Valenti, to show the world that family can come together from the most unexpected places. There is nothing wrong with a big singing crocodile with an even bigger personality!

Finished out this Veteran's Day with a Family Movie Night watching TOP GUN MAVERICK courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment providing me a free Blu-ray of the film. The summer blockbuster movie of 2022 is now available to add to your home entertainment video library on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and Digital formats. My twins have grown up with the Minions. Despicable Me was one of the first Hollywood movies they ever saw and they adore the loveable losers that are minions of that film's anti-villain. My son and daughter went BANANAS when they found out that we were having an end of summer family movie night watching MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU courtesy of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The newest movie in the Despicable Me franchise of films is now available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and Digital to add to your home entertainment video library.

The kids were geeked that this movie provides an origin story on how Gru and the Minions become a villainous team. Plus, in addition to the animated feature length theatrical animated film, the home video release edition of MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU is full of the goodies that we come to expect when movies are released on Digital as well as Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD discs. Long before he becomes the master of evil, Gru is just a 12-year-old boy in 1980s suburbia, plotting to take over the world from his basement. When the infamous supervillain group, the Vicious 6, ousts their leader, Gru attempts to join their ranks but soon finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. With Gru on the run, the Minions attempt to learn martial arts to help save him, and Gru discovers that even bad guys need a little help from their friends. Packed with the franchise’s signature subversive humor, MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU features more thrilling action than any Despicable Me film ever before!

Interestingly, while the Minions stole the show in the Despicable Me films, Gru is the standout in this MINIONS movie. And that works well because the Minions perform the same old same old antics in this film while Gru is refreshingly funny and likeable, well as much so as a pre-teen boy who dreams of being a "super villain" can be.  And while I have to admit starting to become somewhat tired of the Minions, Gru kept my interest in this story with his youthfulness adding some new energy to the franchise. 

My kids still laughed throughout the movie at the Minions hijinks so for them that never gets old. I actually got a big chuckle realizing that many of the villains in the MINIONS: RISE OF GRU are actors with a tough guy and gal reputation including Jean Claude Van-Damme (Jean Clawed), Dolph Lundgren (Svengeance), Danny Trejo (Stronghold) and Lucy Lawless (Nun-Chuck). So, everyone in our family found funny moments in this adventure-comedy.

MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU earned a Geek Daddy nod of approval because after four movies this film was still very enjoyable to view and left us looking forward to more adventures with Gru and the Minions. I hear Despicable Me 4 is coming to movie theaters on July 3, 2024!

MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU is rated PG for action, violence and rude humor. It has a run time of one hour and twenty-seven minutes. Overall, my whole family enjoyed watching the film, so in my opinion it is a great selection that both parents and children can enjoy watching together for a movie night.

UNCHARTED FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT

Thank you to Sony Pictures for hosting our UNCHARTED family movie night this weekend.  The movie studio provided us with the film to view on Digital, but before seeing it we had to unlock the download code by engaging in a fun scavenger hunt created by Wild Optimists solving a variety of puzzles in our hunt for the treasure. UNCHARTED is available now on Digital and will be available May 10 on Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD.

In UNCHARTED, street-smart Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan and lost 500 years ago by the House of Moncada. What starts as a heist job for the duo becomes a globe-trotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes he and his family are the rightful heirs. If Nate and Sully can decipher the clues and solve one of the world's oldest mysteries, they stand to find $5 billion in treasure and perhaps even Nate's long-lost brother...but only if they can learn to work together.

Our Wild Optimists scavenger hunt started off with a mysterious package that arrived in the mail with clues from Nathan Drake that included post cards and maps like the treasure hunters use in UNCHARTED. Deciphering these clues were the key to unlocking our treasure. To help us in our race to the treasure of unlocking our digital code for UNCHARTED for our family movie night, Nathan threw in a few tools in his package that included an antique key, Bubble Yum gum, a flashlight and pen. 

It was time for some brain teasers! We had a sticky time tracing a path on a map. Then there were clues to discover within the post cards. Plus, we had to search through diagrams of a church and catacombs.

Finally, after a half hour of scouring through the items Nathan sent to us, we had the answer! Yes! We found our treasure, a download code creatively hidden within the items in our mailer, so that we could watch UNCHARTED for our family movie night. An exciting way to kick off our evening with the family sleuthing together to solve a mystery. 

As we watched UNCHARTED, it was amusing to see how the clues in our scavenger hunt related to scenes in the movie. It was a nice way to start off our family movie night by solving our own scavenger hunt before watching an adventure movie about searching for a treasure trove. A fun game and entertaining movie made for an evening of quality family time.

UNCHARTED is rated PG-13 for action, language and violence by the Motion Picture Association of America. It has a run-time of one hour and fifty-six minutes. SING 2 ARRIVES ON HOME VIDEO

My family really enjoyed SING, the 2016 animated movie from ILLUMINATION (the studio also behind Despicable Me & Secret Life of Pets) about a struggling theater owner who assembles a loveable group of misfits to compete in a talent competition with the goal of raising enough money to save the building from having its mortgage foreclosed by the bank. We are GEEKED that a sequel has been released and is now available to add to your home entertainment library; but really have six years gone by already?! Wow how time flies!

In 2022's SING 2, The act that has arisen from the SING talent show is the talk of the town. Moon Theater is the most successful entertainment venue in Calatonia. But that isn't enough for its owner Buster Moon! He wants his singing troupe to be world famous by performing in the glamorous theaters of Redshore City's glamorous theaters. So, they hit the road to take their act to a new level of sucess.

Just one problem ... they need a state to perform on. Buster Moon though has an answer for that by talking a casino mogul to sponsor their show at his theater in Redshore City. There is a hitch though, Moon promises that Clay Calloway a reclusive rock star who hasn't performed in decades is in the cast even though the ever-optimistic koala has never met him. Will the show go on?!

SING 2 is filled with comedic moments and a delightful musical soundtrack complimenting an entertaining story making this all ages appropriate flick an excellent selection for a family movie night. I was particularly geeked about the energetic sci-fi themed musical that Buster Moon is attempting to stage. This science fiction fan appreciated the astronaut and alien themes we see as Moon's crew plans and performs their Broadway-style show. That show along with the exploits it takes to get it on stage earns SING 2 a Geek Daddy nod of approval.

SING 2 is available now on Digital and debuts March 29 on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. The movie is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America based on rude material and mild peril/violence. The show has a runtime of one hour, forty-nine minutes and forty seconds.

Of course, as home video releases are known for SING 2 includes bonus content in addition to the theatrical release. RON'S GONE WRONG

We had an enjoyable family movie night watching the animated flick Ron's Gone Wrong and my 12-year-old twins especially appreciated the film because they found it very relatable to where they are in their lives right now as middle schoolers. The movie's parody of a technology company very similar to Facebook that launches a product with the goal of promoting people abandoning in-person interactions to instead socially connect with others solely through technology rings true in both a funny and also somewhat scary retrospect of today's times. Why talk to someone face-to-face when you can do it instead through an app, or in the case of this movie a robot, is a central theme of this comedy which explores if technology may be devolving our humanity rather than accomplishing goals of actually bring people closer together. While this may seem a heavy topic, Ron's Gone Wrong addresses it in a humorous way through a heart-warming story.

Middle school can be a tough time where people are changing both with puberty and in developing a sense of who they are with their personality and place in the world. My own kids are struggling with being bullied and finding themselves in uncomfortable social situations navigating through school hallways during the tween and early teen years of middle school. Many of the troubles the main character faces in the movie are similar to circumstances my son and daughter have also faced when it comes to navigating friendships in middle school. They both expressed while we watched Ron's Gone Wrong how much they appreciated how the scenarios in the film hit home with struggles they themselves personally are going through and were appreciative of the inspiring positive messages portrayed in the story. Plus, they were laughing throughout the movie; so this comedy hits the mark when it comes to being funny based upon all the giggles floating around the room. 

In Ron's Gone Wrong, things go hilariously awry when Barney, a socially awkward middle schooler, receives a malfunctioning, digitally connected device that’s supposed to be his “best friend out of the box.” In this action-packed animated story set against the backdrop of the social media age, a boy and his robot discover the wonderful messiness of true friendship. Ron's Gone Wrong is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America and has a run-time of 1 hour and 47 minutes.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this movie because it didn't get a lot of buzz. When hitting play to watch it we didn't have a lot of expectations. I was pleasantly surprised with Ron's Gone Wrong being a totally enjoyable family-friendly flick full of laughs and characters that are developed so the audience cares about them and is invested in the film's conclusion. Ron's Gone Wrong captured the whole family's attention throughout the film making for a great movie night selection.

While the critics didn't provide rave reviews of Ron's Gone Wrong, audiences seem to agree with this Geek Daddy as the film has been certified FRESH on Rotten Tomatoes with a 94% audience approval score. Taking into consideration all the laughs and positive messages incorporated into this family-friendly adventure/comedy, Ron's Gone Wrong has absolutely earned a Geek Daddy nod of approval. Watching it made for a great movie night with the wife and kids!
