2025 MICHIGAN RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL

The Michigan Renaissance Festival returns to its medieval Hollygrove Village fairgrounds in Metro Detroit's Oakland County (about an hour north of Detroit just off Interstate 75) for its 46th season this year. Step back in time by visiting a bustling 16th century realm where you can interact with nobles, knights, troubadours, jesters and maybe even cross paths with some fairy folk. Be on guard because Vikings and pirates are also known to raid the festivities from time to time.

Sebastian the Singing Pirate is one of the acts you may come across on one of the Michigan Renaissance Festival's 17 entertainment stages featuring live music, comedy, magic acts and more. This year's event runs on weekends August 16 through September 28. Huzzah!

Cheering on knights participating in the annual Mich Ren Fest jousting tournament is probably my favorite part of the festivities. Seeing the horses race around the pitch while their riders compete in both competitions of skill and battles with iron weapons is impressive. Though sometimes just sitting back with a cold ale and listening to some live music from days gone by can be delightful too. Do you have a favorite activity that takes place at a Renaissance Fair?

There are some new activities taking place in 2025 at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. There will be a Wicked Wand Workshop, Ninja Warrior Challenge, and Petting Zoo incorporated into the festivities within the medieval village of Hollygrove. Here's some exciting news too, although I step through the standing stones in 21st century garb to visit Hollygrove and only stay for a brief time each year, the honor of citizen has been bestowed upon me. As a subtle aside to my fellow travelers, while there was nothing nefarious about my receiving such a title, if you would like to obtain this privilege stopping by Traveling Leather while in Hollygrove and paying a modest tribute to the shopkeeper goes a long way in obtaining a badge of citizenship.

LOONEY TUNES BREAKFAST AT EMAGINE THEATRES

Each month, Emagine hosts a Breakfast and a Movie showing, at select theaters, of one of the newest family-film releases. DETROIT KEEPS COLLEGE BOWL GAME AT FORD FIELD

Detroit will be hosting a football game downtown again this year during the College Bowl Season with a new title sponsor. MOTOR CITY COMIC CON SCREENING OF JURASSIC PARK WITH SPECIAL GUEST APPEARANCE

Motor City Comic Con will be hosting a special screening event of the 1993 movie JURASSIC PARK at Emagine Novi on Friday, November 8, 2024 at 8pm featuring Wayne Knight from the movie. Knight will make a special guest appearance and host a Q&A panel discussion in Emagine’s Super EMX auditorium, where each attendee will also receive a commemorative badge and exclusive artwork, along with a ticket to attend the screening of Jurassic Park following the panel. Admission to Motor City Comic Con is not included in this add-on ticketed event, however it is required to attend as this is a special event opportunity only available to Motor City Comic Con guests. There is an additional fee of $40 beyond the Motor City Comic Con admission price to participate in the Wayne Knight Jurassic Park screening.

BREAKING THE CHAINS: THE GUARD DOG STORY

For three decades, cartoonist and writer Patrick McDonnell has entertained readers around the world with his beloved syndicated comic strip Mutts. The adventures of Mooch, the curious cat, and Earl, the ever-trusting dog, have drawn praise from the likes of Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, and The Simpsons creator Matt Groening. In 1995, McDonnell introduced a new character in Mutts: Guard Dog, a chained dog longing for his freedom. Now, this September, Abrams ComicsArts will publish Breaking the Chain: The Guard Dog Story, a celebration and history of Guard Dog with a full color version of his newsworthy story of long awaited freedom. 

Over the years Guard Dog, one of the Mutts comic strip’s most beloved characters, has played an important role in raising awareness about the cruelty of tethering and has inspired countless readers to become involved in animal welfare. Featuring the complete Guard Dog story, early Mutts comic strips, and other supplementary materials - Breaking the Chain: The Guard Dog Story will be published on Tuesday, September 3. Abrams will donate a portion of the proceeds for pre-orders of Breaking the Chain to the Sidewalk Angels Foundation.
