BROADWAY IN DETROIT 2023 SHOWS

broadway in detroit

Broadway in Detroit has announced their lineup of stage shows which will be presented at the Opera House and Fisher Theatre for its 2023 season. Shows include Company, Disney's Frozen, Mrs, Doubtfire, Six, To Kill a Mockingbird, Wicked, and a seventh production yet to be announced. The schedule is as follows:

Six [May - June 2023 @ Fisher Theatre]

Six is a modern retelling of the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives: Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves, Katherine Howard, and Catherine Parr. They have come together as a band to stage a pop concert and invite the audience to hear their stories. They cannot decide who should be the lead singer, so they initiate a competition, or singing battle, to see who suffered the most as Queen. Each wife believes they had it toughest and they belittle each other’s attempts to prove their hardship. However, they become frustrated that their place in history is defined by one man. Together, they decide to pick up the pen and the microphone, and re-write their own stories. They are more than a rhyme, more than a wife, and much more than one King could handle.

Company [October 2023 @ Fisher Theatre]

On the night of his 35th birthday, Robert struggles to think of a wish to make as he blows out his birthday candles. The lone bachelor, surrounded by “those good and crazy people” -- his married friends -- Robert is uncertain whether he should simply be happy with his lot or whether he should wish for his own romantic partner. Over a series of dinner parties, first dates, and thoughtful conversations, Robert attempts to understand the pros and cons of marriage from his diverse and frequently hilarious friends, and begins to make sense of his own persistent bachelorhood. Company, Stephen Sondheim’s groundbreaking modern musical, is a mature, intelligent, and wildly funny look at relationships, vulnerability, and “being alive.”

Mrs. Doubtfire [November 2023 @ Fisher Theatre]

Unemployed actor, Daniel Hillard, loses custody of his three children after a messy divorce from his wife, Miranda. Desperate to connect with his children, he creates the alter ego of Euphegenia Doubtfire, the picture-perfect Scottish nanny. Unaware of Mrs. Doubtfire’s true identity, Miranda hires Doutbfire to take care of the children. As his alter ego begins to take on a life of her own, Daniel learns more than he bargained for about fathering from Mrs. Doubtfire. From the writing team behind Something Rotten (2014), Mrs. Doubtfire is a smash hit comedy filled with lots of love and laughter!

Frozen [November 2023 @ Detroit Opera House]

When newly crowned Queen Elsa accidentally sets off an eternal winter in the town of Arendelle, her younger sister Anna (along with her friends Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven) goes off on a thrilling adventure to find her sister and save the kingdom. Facing an unsuspected villain, unpredictable ice powers, and something new waiting round every corner, Anna must fight alongside her friends to bring back summer. Frozen reveals how true love can come in many forms, and that the bond between sisters is something truly special.

Wicked [January - February 2024 @ Detroit Opera House]

Stephen Schwartz’s Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz takes place before L. Frank Baum’s classic Wizard of Oz story ever began. Before Dorothy was even alive, two young girls met in the Land of Oz, became rivals, and then friends. One was born with emerald green skin, with a brilliant mind and a fiery spirit. The other was classically beautiful, with great ambition and incredible drive. The green-skinned Elphaba was ostracized by her family and by everyone at school. The beautiful Galinda was destined to be forever popular. Over the course of Wicked, we discover how these two young women became rivals and then the closest of friends – and how they ended up as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. Originally starring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, Wicked is an amazing vehicle for two powerhouse actresses, and also features a large, strong ensemble.

To Kill a Mockingbird [March 2024 @ Fisher Theatre]

It’s 1935, and racial tensions are high in Maycomb, Alabama. Nonetheless, young Jean Louise Finch -- or Scout, as she is fondly called -- manages to live a rather carefree, privileged existence, insulated from issues of race. All that changes when Scout watches her father, Atticus Finch, defend an innocent man, Tom Robinson, against a potential death sentence, which looms threateningly against him because of prejudice due to race. Scout begins to realize that just because society portrays something as being true doesn’t mean that it actually is fact. With the the help of Atticus, and her older brother Jem, Scout learns that “growing up” often means doing what is right, even when it comes at great cost. To Kill A Mockingbird is now considered an American masterpiece about the power of childhood innocence, morality, and love. However, it is important to note that the author, Harper Lee always defined it as a simple love story.

GHOST LIGHTS IN DETROIT

broadway in detroit

I'm looking forward to the long intermission ending, the pandemic passing and the curtain rising again for live drama and musical presentations at theatres. Detroit has many grand theatres that have been the backdrop for many special moments for me and my family. We are very much looking forward to having the chance to making even more fond memories at these venues in the future when the coronvirus social distancing at some point comes to an end.

From my going to see my first play, Annie, with my parents at the Masonic Temple as a kid to taking my own kids to see Sesame Street Live at The Fox Theatre to walking across the stage of the Detroit Opera House to receive my diploma during my law school graduation there have been a lot of smiles shared by my family at these places. More recently, I've enjoyed some great dad time spending one on one evenings out on the town for dinner and a Broadway in Detroit play with my kids taking my daughter to Disney's Aladdin -- The Musical at the Opera House and my son to The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical at the Fisher Theatre.

As auditoriums across the country remain dark during the COVID-19 pandemic, Metro Detroit's theaters want people to know the show will go on! They've produced a video message of hope letting people know that GHOST LIGHT are shining in these special places. Ghost Light narrated by Michigan native Jeff Daniels who is known nationally as a Tony® Award nominated actor and locally as the founder of the Purple Rose Theatre Company, features the solitary ghost lights that continue to shine on our area’s stages while waiting for audiences to safely return.

A centuries-old tradition, a ghost light is a single lamp that illuminates the stage when the theatre is not in use. Legend has it that the light shines to protect the actors, patrons and theatre from bad luck and ghosts. In these times, ghost lights have taken on a new meaning. They are beaming a message of hope and inspiration to “Shine on Detroit!” as we as we persevere through these difficult days together.

The production of Ghost Light was sponsored by Broadway in Detroit and the film short was created by SMZ Advertising. Check out this video and I hope it inspires you to shine on! Plays and concerts will one day be ushering us back into normality and I look forward to the day we can return to the theaters around Michigan and across the country. It is nice to know the ghost lights are on in Detroit as a guide for us to return once again to experiencing in a communal setting live theater and music together. Until that moment my friends, this dad blogger wishes you all stay safe and keep your spirits up.

ALADDIN AT THE DETROIT OPERA HOUSE

My daughter was all smiles as we took in a performance of Disney's ALADDIN THE MUSICAL at the Detroit Opera House. This stage show based upon the 1992 animated movie by Walt Disney Studios originally opened on Broadway where it became a blockbuster theatrical hit. Now the show is traveling across the country stopping in Detroit for performances from December 12, 2018 through January 13, 2019.

Ironically, ALADDIN has moved from the Big Apple's New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway to the Michigan Opera Theatre's home on Broadway Street in Detroit. This 1920's era theater is a great location for Broadway style plays as it was specifically designed to provide splendid acoustics in an environment filled with grand looking Italian Renaissance style architecture. The Detroit Opera House is filled with lavish crystal chandeliers, frescoes, brass fixtures, and marble stairways providing a luxurious setting for enjoying a show. With the place decked out in holiday decorations it was an extra special time to visit the place.

Attractive sets and glamorous costumes combined with acrobatic dance routines and energetic musical numbers thoroughly amused my nine year old daughter. She was clapping, laughing, and singing along throughout the show.  The comedic moments, choreographed sword fights, and on-stage fireworks and laser light special effects in ALADDIN where what really entertained me. From a magic carpet that takes the audience along on a ride through the sky to watching the evil villain being vanquished as he disappears in an explosion of smoke this show is sure to delight. It made for a great daddy-daughter night out!

While this musical stage show is based off of the classic Disney animated movie, this incarnation of ALADDIN also has its own unique elements. While it includes five cherished songs from the movie's Academy Award-winning soundtrack there are even more included in ALADDIN THE MUSICAL that were written especially for this show. Also Aladdin's monkey pal in the movie is replaced with a trio of misfit street rat friends who support the story's hero and provide a lot of comedic moments that had the audience during our show cracking up from their jests and high jinx. You'll need to go see the show yourself to discover all the tweaks and twists from the movie in this version of ALADDIN crafted by Disney Theatrical Productions.

I have to say the talent level of all the performers was really impressive and Clinton Greenspan (Aladdin) and Michael James Scott (Genie) were simply outstanding. The show's talented ensemble wasn't just performing on stage though. Behind the scenes, this production of ALADDIN was supported with costumes, props, and stage layouts designed by seven-time Tony-winning scenic designer Bob Crowley, six-time Tony-winning lightning designer Natasha Katz, and two-time Tony winning costume designer Gregg Barnes. Under the direction of Thomas Schumacher, the show also features music by Tony Award and eight-time Oscar® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Sister Act), lyrics by two-time Oscar winner Howard Ashman (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid), three-time Tony Award and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice (Evita, Aida) and four-time Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), and is choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon).

ALADDIN is a show that will entertain all ages. So whether you want to take the whole family on an outing to the Detroit Opera House, enjoy a daddy-daughter excursion like I did, or leave the kids at home for a date night with your significant other, you will be glad you want to go see ALADDIN while it is in town. Being that my daughter was beaming from cheek to cheek during the show and she couldn't wait to go to school the next day to tell all her friends about it, you know we had a wonderful time at ALADDIN THE MUSICAL.

Tickets for this limited engagement at the Detroit Opera House are still available and start at $25. You can purchase tickets online at www.broadwayindetroit.com or www.ticketmaster.com, and by phone at 800-982-2787. A Geek Daddy received complimentary tickets from Broadway in Detroit to see this show. Opinions expressed are my own. My daughter and I honestly really enjoyed the show!
