MOTOR CITY COMIC CON RETURNS IN NOVEMBER

Motor City Comic Con (MC3) returns to Metro Detroit on November 10-12, 2023 at the Suburban Collection Showplace located at 46100 Grand River Ave. in Novi, Michigan. MC3 gathers comic book and multimedia dealers from across the country, offering a vast variety of pop-culture merchandise, including comics, art, t-shirts, movie memorabilia, posters and more. Over 250 comic book creators, writers and artists are featured at MC3 each year, as well as actors from the television and movie industry. Highlights of this Fall's event include appearance by Karate Kid / Cobra Kai actors Ralph Macchio, William Zabka and Xolo Mariduena; Star Trek alum Walter Koenig; Star Wars' Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams); and the star of one of my favorite TV series ED, Tom Cavanagh.

DISNEY'S HAUNTED MANSION COMES TO HOME VIDEO

Just in time for Halloween Disney's HAUNTED MANSION movie is being released for home video. The film is available now on Digital and will be out on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD beginning October 17, 2023. My son has read all of author Rick Riordan's adventure novels so he is geeked that a brand new PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS show is coming to Disney+. Based on the best-selling book series that has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide, PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS will debut with a two-episode premiere on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 on Disney+, followed by new episodes weekly. Riordan has worked closely with the creative team and showrunners Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz to help deliver a series that stays true to his vision for the heroic characters featured in his Percy Jackson books. The first two episodes are co-written by Riordan and Steinberg.

DISNEYS FROZEN COMING TO DETROIT OPERA HOUSE

Frozen, the Tony-nominated Best Musical, is coming to the Motor City for a 3-week premiere engagement at The Detroit Opera House beginning Wednesday, November 29, 2023 with performances playing through Sunday, December 17. The stage adaption of the Disney animated film Frozen completed its Broadway run in March 2020 after breaking four house records at The St. James Theatre. Now it is on tour across America. 

This touring stage show features the songs you know and love from the original Oscar-winning film, plus an expanded score with a dozen new numbers by the movie’s songwriters, Oscar-winner Kristen Anderson-Lopez and EGOT-winner Robert Lopez. Joining them on a creative team that has won a cumulative 16 Tony Awards are Oscar-winner Jennifer Lee (book), Tony and Olivier Award winner Michael Grandage (director), and Tony-winner Rob Ashford (choreographer). The creative team for Frozen also includes scenic and costume design by two-time Tony and Olivier Award winner Christopher Oram, lighting design by six-time Tony Award winner Natasha Katz, sound design by seven-time Tony nominee Peter Hylenski, video design by Tony winner Finn Ross, puppet design by Michael Curry, hair design by David Brian Brown, makeup design by Anne Ford-Coates, special effects design by Jeremy Chernick and casting by The Telsey Office/Rachel Hoffman, CSA and Laura Wade, CSA. FOUR QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN BUYING TECH FOR YOUR KIDS

Any geeky parent knows the joy of sharing technology with their child, be that bringing home the latest game console and playing the new titles together, enjoying smart toys that have a range of functionalities, or watching them build their own computer for the first time in their teenage years. 

That said, as a parent it’s important to not only consider the utility of the tech we bring into the lives of our children, but how appropriate they are as well. For example, it’s important to assess the quality control of each item you buy, such as with products like Onewheel, finding items crafted to the manufacturing standards of your own economic zone rather than a cheap import from abroad can ensure safety. 

However, you might not have time to read the specification sheets of every single item you purchase. You just want to find a lovely and suitable gift you can rely on. So, let’s consider four questions to ask before buying tech for your kids: 

Is It Safe? 

Front and center will always remain the question - is this safe for my kids? After all, an excellent device may seem great and easy to operate for you, but not all kids. An electric scooter, for instance, might reach speeds that you’re not too happy with. It’s important to note the appropriate age of the tech, if they can understand the controls, and put simply, if the dimensions are correctly calibrated for someone their size. 

Are There Parental Controls? 

Ultimately, parent controls allow you to exercise administrative measures over the functioning of the device. That might include time limitations, or preventing children from accessing the wider internet. It’s always good to set these appropriately and check in advance if you will be able to determine the appropriate use of the item you’re interested in. 

Are There Educational Opportunities? 

It’s important to ask if there are educational opportunities in line with using this tech. It might not be the case, and you may be okay with that. However, sometimes smart tech is best when it helps children learn and develop, not just when it helps them spend time in a recreaitonal context. So for example, you might load a small child’s laptop with access to educational sites and games. Alternatively, their small kids tablet might have the same content. You need only look in any local “gadget shop” to see how many cool, kid-oriented science tech toys there are. 

Will It Require Maintenance? 

Charging an e-bike or calibrating a smart instrument like a modern keyboard or MIDI controller may take some time to manage or rectify, and depending on the reliability of the device, it’s important to make sure if your child is mature and responsible enough to manage it. If so, that’s fantastic. If not, it may be worth considering a worthwhile alternative. This isn’t to say you should only buy them indestructible items, it’s just that this is more of a concern when purchasing tech for children. 

With this advice, you’re sure to ask the best questions when buying tech for your kids.

STAR WARS AHSOKA SHOW COMING TO DISNEY+ IN AUGUST

While my fanship of Star Wars will always center around the adventures of Luke, Leia & Han in the original trilogy of movies, for my son and daughter their interest in the franchise revolves more around The Clone Wars and Rebels animated television shows. We would have a family tv night each week devoted to watching a newly released episode. So, they are GEEKED that the characters and plots from these cartoons are being continued in the new AHSOKA live action series coming to the Disney+ streaming service. Of course, since being a Star Wars fan since I was a kid myself, I'm excited for this new show to debut too!

From viewing the trailer for AHSOKA it looks like there is a lot to be excited about. I'm impressed about how well the characters from Star Wars: Rebels appear to transition from cartoons to real actors and actresses. It is nice to see the adventures of these characters carry on. AHSOKA kicks-off exclusively on Disney+ with its first two episodes being released on August 23, 2023.

Set after the fall of the Empire, AHSOKA follows the former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy. "Ahsoka" stars Rosario Dawson, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ray Stevenson, Ivanna Sakhno, Diana Lee Inosanto, David Tennant, Lars Mikkelsen and Eman Esfandi. The episodes are directed by Dave Filoni, Steph Green, Peter Ramsey, Jennifer Getzinger, Geeta Vasant Patel and Rick Famuyiwa.

In Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 the beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for intense sequences of violence, action, strong language, suggestive sexual content, drug references, and thematic elements. The movie delves into the origins of Rocket Racoon while bringing James Gunn tenure with the franchise to a conclusion. It brings back Cosmo the Spacedog as well as debuts the character Adam Warlock whose introduction into the MCU was teased at the conclusion of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Can the Guardians defeat the High Evolutionary to save the galaxy in what could be their final adventure? 

The film has a runtime of 2 hours and 30 minutes. Be prepared to for the Guardians to rock on through the movie which is sure to be filled with stellar music which Guardians of the Galaxy flicks are known for. AHSOKA TEASER TRAILER

Dave Filoni's expansion of the animated Star Wars adventures he crafted into live actions shows continues with the August 2023 debut of AHSOKA on the Disney+ streaming service. Originally a key character in the Clone Wars animated series that Filoni directed, Ahsoka evolved from being Anakin Skywalker's Jedi Padawan (apprentice) to being portrayed as an early leader of the Rebel Alliance in the Star Wars: Rebels cartoons. Now in her live-action incarnation played by Rosario Dawson, Ahsoka finds herself in the years following the fall of the Empire occurring after the events of the Return of the Jedi movie.

My kids have grown up with us having family tv nights to watch new episodes of Clone Wars and Rebels when they originally aired. They are actually bigger fans of the tv shows then any of the Star Wars movies. So, we are fans of Filoni's work with the Star Wars galaxy and excited how he has begun coherently meshing together the animated and live action television shows. Really geeked that it has been announced he will be directing a live action movie that brings together the characters and stories from all The Mandalorian era Disney Plus shows into a feature length theatrical released film.

In anticipation of the next stage of Ahsoka's story, a teaser trailer has been released to promote the upcoming show. There is a lot in it that is both exciting and confusing for Star Wars fans. Check it out:

One of my favorite part of the teaser is that it clearly shows the animated characters that were the heroes of Rebels are coming back together to be a big part of the Disney Plus galaxy of Star Wars live action shows. Not only that but the villain from that series, Thrawn, is coming back to lay claim to being heir to the Empire. It will be interesting if there will be tie-ins to the Timothy Zahn book that originally introduced this fan favorite character before he was revamped into the Rebels storyline. These characters are to my kids like Luke, Leia, Han, R2-D2 and Darth Vader are to me in being favorite Star Wars heroes and villains. 

What seems confusing in where the show's timeline is are that there sure seem to be a lot of evil Sith running about. These villains aren't around at Return of the Jedi and don't seem to be around when The Force Awakens takes place. So, what is going on here! I'm intrigued!

While Kathleen Kennedy has been in charge of LucasFilm since the Disney transaction and George Lucas' retirement, it has been Filoni that has kept the franchise alive. Kennedy tore down the magic of the franchise in three poorly executed cash grab movies while Filoni kept the George Lucas style of the franchise alive through his production of Star Wars television shows. There is a whole generation now who relates to Star Wars more through the characters and stories told through Filoni's television series than the movies. Hopefully, Filoni will continue to be able to have more control of steering the franchise's direction and Kennedy will graciously disappear into retirement. 

I have a lot of faith in Filoni being the steward of the Star Wars galaxy. My whole family is looking forward to seeing AHSOKA on Disney+ and Filoni's Star Wars movie that ties these shows all together. This is the way!

ILLUMINATION MIGRATION MOVIE FLIES INTO THEATRES AT CHRISTMAS

Birds of a feather flock together. We'll see how well that saying holds up when Illumination's newest animated movie flies into theatres this coming Christmas. This holiday season, the studio that brought us Minions, Despicable Me, Sing and The Secret Life of Pets comedies, invites us back to the movies to join in a funny, feathered family vacation in the action-packed new original comedy, Migration. My kids have grown up watching animated films from this studio, so we're excited to have a family outing to the movies to see Migration. A family of ducks try to convince their overprotective father to go on the vacation of a lifetime. Sounds like a movie that this Geek Daddy can relate to! GWELF INTO THE HINTERLANDS

Illustrator Larry MacDougall took readers on a tour of wonderous fantasy world he crafted, a wonderous medieval land populated by animals with human characteristics, in his book "Gwelf: The Survival Guide." Inspired by "Wind and the Willows" and "The Lord of the Rings", Wilburton Fox serves as your guide through Gwelf from whose perspective MacDougall fills the book with interesting anecdotes providing tips on how to safely traverse this magical place and impressive watercolour artwork that is eye captivating. Wilburton makes sure you know what to expect, what equipment to pack, where to rest for the night, and many more travel tips to be properly prepared for an adventurous trek through Gwelf.

As a kid, I spend hours flipping through the pages of GNOMES by Wil Huygen which fascinated me with its illustrations and textbook notes that explained the habitat and lifestyles of these mythical creatures as if they were being studied in real life. Beatrix Potter was also another childhood author and artist that delighted me. MacDougall's Gwelf books provide me a warm nostalgic feeling relating to my enjoyment of Huygen's and Potters work. Yet, MacDougall also stands out on his own merit for providing a fantastic reading experience.

COMING OF AGE SCI FI ADVENTURE COMING TO DISNEY PLUS

A new original coming of age science fiction adventure movie, CRATER, will be debuting May 12 on the Disney+ streaming service. Directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez, the sci-fi flick playing exclusively on Disney Plus stars Isaiah Russell-Bailey, Mckenna Grace, Billy Barratt, Orson Hong, Thomas Boyce and Scott Mescudi. 

CRATER is the story of Caleb Channing (Russell-Bailey), who was raised on a lunar mining colony and is about to be permanently relocated to an idyllic faraway planet following the death of his father (Mescudi). But before leaving, to fulfill his dad’s last wish, he and his three best friends, Dylan (Barratt), Borney (Hong) and Marcus (Boyce), and a new arrival from Earth, Addison (Grace), hijack a rover for one final adventure on a journey to explore a mysterious crater.
