MIRTH AND MISCHIEF AT UHUBURG CASTLE

uhuburg castle

During my elementary school years, you'd often find me with my nose in a book engrossed in reading tales about King Arthur, Prince Valient and the merry adventures of Robin Hood. Our local library had this wonderful reading room that was funded by the Rockefeller Foundation that made you feel like you were hanging out in a castle with its woodworking and a fireplace they kept lit from Fall through Spring which was the perfect spot for a kid to immerse himself in tales of chivalry and swordsmanship. Since those days, I've dreamed of one day traveling to Europe to explore the castles and locations where those stories were set.

Alas, I've yet to make that dream a reality. If you are like me and taking a trip to Europe to trek around castles isn't really that practical on your family budget, there is another option that is closer to home where you don't have to use a passport to travel outside the USA. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding the alpine town of Helen, Georgia is Uhuburg Castle, a legitimate reproduction of a European fortresses from days gone by.

travel geek

This Renaissance-style castle has twelve towers, one turret, three gatehouses, an eight story lookout tower, Great Hall, cloistered walls with rampart and lower walkways and two acres of courtyard gardens. The castle has spectacular views from each of the walls and towers of the breathtaking scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains around it. Based upon the Bavarian heritage of Helen, the structure takes its name from Uhu and Burg, the German words for Owl and Castle. Visitors can choose to spend a day touring the grounds or can spend the night at the castle's boutique hotel. Uhuburg Castle also hosts special events like Renaissance festivals throughout the year.

During the month of May this year, Uhuburg Castle will be featuring an immersive theatrical event on Friday and Saturday nights called Mirth & Mischief which features cirque-style acrobatics and cutting-edge video projections. Utilizing the ambiance of Uhuburg Castle, Mirth & Mischief will create a fantasy setting meant to fascinate and delight people. This is a ticketed event meant for ages 18+.

Head over to uhuburg.com to check out other events taking place at the castle throughout the year ranging from its CastleFaire Renaissance Festival to visits with Father Christmas at the castle. Would you be geeked to visit Uhuburg Castle? I know I would be!

HAUNTED PLACES OF CODY WYOMING

Cody Wyoming

Founded by Buffalo Bill Cody, the town of Cody in northwestern Wyoming serves as a gateway to Yellowstone National Park and epitomizes the spirit of the showman's Wild West shows. With Cody's Wild West atmosphere still alive welcoming Yellowstone tourists to the area, spirits of days gone by continue to linger through ghost stories and spooky landmarks. Fans of Halloween festivities and paranormal mysteries are sure to have their interest piqued by these haunted places in Cody, Wyoming:

Irma Hotel. One of the most recognizable buildings on Cody’s Sheridan Ave., the Irma hotel was built by Buffalo Bill Cody in 1902 and named for his daughter Irma. Irma and her husband Fred Garlow – manager of the hotel - both died tragically of the Spanish flu in October 1918. Irma was only 35 when she died, and Room 35 at the hotel is where there have been numerous reports of hauntings.

Irma Hotel

Among the occurrences guests of that room have reported: water in the bathroom turns on and off by itself, belongings are moved to different locations in the room, and artwork is found on the floor where it couldn’t have simply fallen from the picture hooks. There have also been reports of guests and staff seeing an apparition of a soldier in a cavalry uniform with a sword, but it is only the soldier’s bottom half that appears.

In another room, there have been reports of Irma herself in a rocking chair in the corner of a guest room. And servers in the dining room have reported seeing guests sitting in booths in the restaurant but finding no one there when they return to serve the guests. In that same dining room, there’s a photo - circa early 1900s - of a ghostly figure hanging out in the dining room surrounded by a few men at the bar, seemingly undaunted by the eerie extra in their group.

Irma Hotel Cody Wyoming

J.H. Vogel Building. Now the home of a thriving retail store called the Cowboy Palace, the J.H. Vogel Building is another place with a history of hauntings. When the building opened in 1912, proprietor J.H. Vogel and his wife made full use of every nook and cranny of the building by operating a furniture store in the front and a mortuary in the back. The two businesses were separated by just a curtain, so presumably furniture shoppers were occasionally distracted by the presence of sorrowful mourners paying their respects to their deceased loved ones. Several businesses have operated in the building over the years, and many of those business owners have reported seeing a ghostly boy in strange clothing roaming the aisles.

Halloween Ghost Stories

Cody Cemetery. There have also been reports of apparitions roaming around a field that was once a Cody cemetery. The graves in the cemetery were relocated in the 1960s because irrigation and heavy rains caused some of the coffins in shallow graves to rise to the surface. The effort to relocate the cemetery was only partially successful, and Cody locals have surmised that some of the graves were missed and bodies may still be buried beneath what is now just a field.

Mummy Cave. Just a short hike from the road north of the Shoshone River in Wapiti Valley, a Cody resident discovered a cave with the remains of a remarkably well-preserved, 1,200-year-old man that residents dubbed “Mummy Joe.” The discovery was remarkable for many reasons.

Cody Yellowstone

He was buried under a massive overhang of a high volcanic cliff more than 6,000 feet above sea level, which offered the perfect climate for long preservation. Joe, archaeologists have surmised, was a big-game hunter, because there were thousands of well-preserved animal bones – probably of bighorn sheep and deer – resting alongside Joe’s remains. There were also perishable materials like arrows, feathers, baskets, beads and nets. Mysteriously, the cave was occupied for many years after Mummy Joe died, which begs the question of why the residents of the cave didn’t move the mummified remains.

Smith Mansion. The Smith Mansion, which locals call “Crazy House,” is a rambling five-story structure perched on a hill on the south side of the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway. The structure was a built bit by bit by owner Lee Smith over many years. Smith and his wife raised two children there, and Smith continually worked on the house, adding architectural elements like seemingly random exterior staircases and containers made from metal scraps.

haunted houses

On a windy day in 1992, Lee was working on the upper floors without safety tethers. He fell from the roof and died. After that the family moved out and the house was left to slowly decay in the harsh elements. Some windy day, it may crumble to the ground. Until then, it sits, abandoned, on a lonely spot overlooking the highway.

Chamberlin Inn. This luxury boutique inn is one of Cody’s showplaces filled with impeccably appointed rooms. Named for the inn’s original proprietress, Agnes Chamberlin, a couple of the inn’s street-facing rooms once served as a dentist office where Agnes’s husband Mark used to practice. Although he called himself a dentist, there is no record of him ever having a license to practice. So presumably, he was practicing his trade on the un-numbed-up mouths of Cody locals whose agony it is said can sometimes be heard as screams murmuring in the wind. Just a little nugget that is good to know for visitors planning an overnight stay.

halloween

The Coffin School. Among the many preserved frontier buildings at Old Trail Town is The Coffin School. Built in 1884 at the W Bar Ranch on the Wood River, the building was indeed used as a school. But it was also the one-time cabin of frontiersman Alfred Nower. One day while hewing logs, Nower accidentally cut his legs. He returned to his cabin in hopes of recovery, but he eventually died of gangrene from his wounds. Like all buildings at Old Trail Town, the Coffin School was moved to the Cody site, reassembled and furnished with frontier-era school desks.

Old Trail Town

Spirit Mountain. Just five miles from Cody, this 7,890-foot peak is commonly called Cedar Mountain. The prominent peak can be viewed from many places throughout Cody. Town founder Buffalo Bill Cody loved the mountain, and he told his friends he wanted to be buried there so he could forever overlook his beloved town.

When he died in Denver in 1917, however, his estranged wife Louisa accepted $10,000 from the city of Denver and the publisher of The Denver Post so that the city could bury the still-famous Wild West Show visionary in Denver instead of Cody. Whether or not that actually happened depends on who you ask. The folks at the Buffalo Bill Grave in Golden, Colo. will assure you that is indeed Buffalo Bill buried in the grave there.

Yet there are many people in Cody who believe a different story, one that involves a caravan of Buffalo Bill’s friends, a long drive to Denver, body-switching, a return trip to Cody with the true remains of Buffalo Bill and a secret burial on Spirit Mountain. And that, according to believers of the legend, is where Buffalo Bill Cody still rests today, overlooking the town he founded.

FIVE WAYS TO ENJOY A CODY YELLOWSTONE FALL GETAWAY

cody yellowstone roadtrip

With summer vacations wrapped up and children back to school, if you want to enjoy the scenery of Yellowstone without the sight of crowds of other tourists around the Fall season is a great time for a getaway to the national park and the nearby quaint northwestern Wyoming town of Cody. This town provides a great staging point with the comforts of civilization for your outdoor adventures in the Yellowstone region.

Here are five ways to enjoy a Cody Yellowstone fall getaway:

Go fishing. Cody Yellowstone is home to an abundance of top-flight fishing spots including the North and South Forks of the Shoshone River and rivers and streams in Yellowstone National Park. Local fishing outfitters offer guides, maps and advice. Blue-ribbon trout fishing is especially popular in the fall, where Yellowstone cutthroat, one of the four subspecies of cutthroat found in Wyoming, can be found throughout the region.

Drive a UTV to a backcountry ghost town. Cody-based Tread ‘N Trails rents street-legal UTVs for adventurous visitors to explore backcountry areas such as the ghost town of Kirwin. Located high in the Absaroka Mountains above the town of Meeteetse, the discovery of gold in the late 1800s prompted the creation of this once-thriving boomtown. When a disastrous blizzard struck in 1907, most people left the town, leaving behind numerous structures and mines. UTV enthusiasts can explore miles of trails surrounding the town. They can also take a short hike to the foundation of a cabin that was being built by aviatrix Amelia Earhart, a frequent visitor to the region before her disappearance.

Drive a scenic byway. Road-tripping in the fall is a memorable way to enjoy fall color, with five scenic drives leading into Cody that take travelers past some of Wyoming’s most breathtaking valleys, mountain passes, rivers and forests. Download the free TravelStorys app and listen to a GPS-prompted audio tour of the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway or the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway. Fans of audio tours can also listen to a guided walking tour highlighting downtown Cody’s historic structures.

View wildlife in action. Fall is one of the best times of the year to watch wildlife in action. The forests, river valleys, mountains and canyons of Cody Yellowstone are filled with wildlife such as bears, elk, wolves, moose, bison, eagles and river otters, and many of these species are especially active in the fall. Bears spend the fall months filling up on pine nuts to fatten up before heading to their dens in the winter. It’s mating season for elk, and the males of the species court prospective mates by shrilly bugling and challenging other males to battles. Fall is also a great time to watch wolves. Wolf packs are often larger in the fall than other times of the year because pups are finally big enough to hunt with the adults. Top places to see wildlife in Cody Yellowstone include Lamar Valley in Yellowstone National Park, and along the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway from Cody to the northeast gate of the park and the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway from Cody to the east gate of the park.

Hit the trails. Explore Cody Yellowstone on a bike, on horseback or on foot. A free downloadable trail map offers suggestions for trails based on desired challenge level and type of trail (hiking, horseback riding, gravel bike or road bike). Grab a free downloadable trail map and hop on a bike to explore the town and the surrounding areas. Popular regions include downtown Cody, Beck Lake, Slick Rock and the Shoshone National Forest.

off roading fun

After a day full of adventure, you are sure to be hungry and thirsty. The new Cody Yellowstone Sippin’ Trail is a great way for visitors to experience some of the town’s most popular restaurants and bars. The trail includes breweries, restaurants and unique venues such as a cigar lounge and a historic hotel built by town founder Buffalo Bill Cody. Visitors who download a free app and make a purchase at the participating locations can earn points for rewards like Sippin Trail T-shirts, pint glasses and stickers.

Home of the Great American Adventure, Cody Yellowstone is comprised of the northwestern Wyoming towns of Cody, Powell and Meeteetse as well as areas inside of Yellowstone National Park and the valley east of the entrance. The region is known for recreational adventures that reflect the adventurous spirit of the visionaries and explorers who brought the remote region to the world’s attention.

NAVIGATING LIFE AS A WIDOWER: CARING FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILDREN

geek daddy

Losing a spouse is one of life's most difficult experiences, but it can be especially challenging when children are involved. For widowers, the road ahead can be long and filled with many obstacles. However, it's important to remember that you don't have to go through it alone. There is help available to support you and your children through this difficult time.

One of the first steps a widower can take is to reach out to friends, family, and support groups. Talking with others who have been through a similar experience can provide comfort and help you feel less isolated. Many communities have support groups specifically for widows and widowers, and these can be a great place to connect with others and receive emotional support, a good example is https://embracegrace.com/single-fathers-support-group

Another important source of support for widowers is counseling. Whether you're dealing with grief, depression, or stress, counseling can provide you with the tools you need to cope with your loss and find ways to move forward. You can also seek support for your children through counseling, as they may be struggling with the loss of their parents and need help processing their feelings.

It's also important to take care of yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally during this time. Exercise, a balanced diet, and getting enough rest can help you maintain your physical and mental health. Pursuing hobbies and interests that you enjoy can also be a great way to relieve stress and find joy in your life.

In addition to personal support, there are also various organizations that offer assistance to widows and widowers. These organizations may offer financial support, resources for single-parent families, and other services to help you and your children.

Fostering Resilience in Children After the Loss of a Parent

As a widower, one of your biggest responsibilities is ensuring your children have the support and resources they need to navigate life after the loss of a parent. This can be a difficult and emotional journey, but it's important to remember that with the right tools and support, children can become resilient and thrive in the face of adversity

One of the most important things you can do is to provide a stable and consistent environment for your children. This includes maintaining their daily routine, providing a safe and secure home, and ensuring they have access to the resources they need for their physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Another important aspect of helping your children cope with loss is to be open and honest with them about what has happened. Children often have a lot of questions after the loss of a parent, and it's important to answer them in a way that is both honest and age-appropriate. Encourage your children to express their feelings and provide a safe and supportive space for them to do so.

It's also important to help your children find healthy ways to cope with their loss. This can include activities such as writing, art, sports, or other hobbies. Encouraging your children to be physically active can also help boost their mood and relieve stress.

Another important way to foster resilience in your children is by helping them form strong relationships with supportive adults. This can include family members, teachers, coaches, or friends. Having a network of supportive adults can help your children feel valued and loved, and provide them with the emotional support they need during this difficult time.

Widower Self-Care: Taking Care of Yourself While Raising Children

As a widower, it's important to remember that taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your children. When you're feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or simply depleted, it can be difficult to be the supportive and nurturing parent your children need. That's why self-care is so important.

One of the most important aspects of self-care is to make time for yourself. This might mean taking a long walk, reading a book, or simply taking a nap. It's important to do things that make you feel relaxed and refreshed, and to prioritize your own needs.

Another important aspect of self-care is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and engaging in regular physical activity. Exercise has been shown to boost mood and relieve stress, and can help you maintain your physical and mental health even during difficult times.

It's also important to seek support from others when you need it. Whether it's talking to a friend, family member, or therapist, it's important to have a network of people you can turn to for support and encouragement. Joining a support group for widowers can also be a great way to connect with others and receive emotional support.

Finally, don't be afraid to ask for help from others. Whether it's help with household chores, transportation, or simply someone to talk to, it's okay to reach out and ask for what you need. Remember, you're not alone in this journey and there are people who care about you and want to help.

In conclusion, as a widower, you don't have to go through the experience of raising your children alone. By reaching out to friends, family, support groups, and organizations, you can find the help and support you need to navigate life with your children. Take care of yourself, don't be afraid to ask for help, and remember, there is a community of people who are here for you.

HISTORIC OAK HILL CEMETERY

halloween cemetery tour

From the mid-1800s through mid-1900s, Pontiac, Michigan was a vibrant civic center and industrial hub. Now a ghost town compared to its heyday years, a cemetery on an oak tree covered hill which marks the highest point within the city provides a haunting reminder of the community's prosperous past. This history geek inspired by the Halloween season took a walk-through Oak Hill Cemetery to explore its eye-catching architecture and spooky atmosphere.

Opened in 1822 as a municipal cemetery, Oak Hill is the final resting place of both wealthy elite and paupers. It is filled with mausoleums and monuments in Greek Revival and Gothic Revival architecture styles honoring veterans, influential politicians and some of the state's richest residents who lived and died between the Revolutionary War and World War II. Pontiac also was the site of a state asylum from 1878 to 1997 filled with developmentally disabled, criminally insane and severally mentally ill individuals. A corner of Oak Hill cemetery was devoted to burying deceased patients from the mental hospital. Walking through this place there is a sense of days gone by and a haunting ambience.

The cemetery has a charming chapel building filled with exquisite stain glass windows. Built in 1898, the Buckland Memorial Chapel is an Old English style structure built of Berea sandstone and German mottled tiling. Three solid bronze plaques are set in the rear wall of the chapel memorializing its benefactor Don C. Buckland along with his wife and daughter. They are buried at the highest point of the hill overlooking the entire cemetery.

Nearby the Buckland Memorial Chapel is David Ward's monument. A surveyor who was compensated by being granted 1/3 of the land he surveyed, David Ward became wealthier than the lumber barons he served and his tomb at the cemetery is meant to exemplify that prestige. At the time of his death in 1900, David Ward was the richest person in Michigan with a fortune of around $15 million dollars.

A cannon was placed within the cemetery in respect to all the veterans located there. It was situated near the graves of two of the most prominent veterans in Oak Hill Cemetery. Israel B. Richardson and Moses Wisner graves are a few paces away from the cannon.

Israel B. Richardson graduated from West Point in 1841 and fought in the Seminole and Mexican Wars where he earned the nickname "Fighting Dick". He practiced law in Pontiac after the Mexican War. In 1862, he rejoined the military where he advanced in promotion from Colonel to Major General. He was wounded and died at the battle of Antietam.

In 1859, Moses Wisner became Governor of Michigan. His Pontiac home served as the governor's mansion during his term in 1860 and was a hotbed of political activity when it came to the state government's operations. Commissioned as a Colonel, Wisner commanded the 22nd Michigan Infantry in the Civil War and died of typhoid fever while they were in Kentucky.

While it may seem scary to walk through a cemetery, especially an old one like this which looks like a place you may see in a horror movie, the place was very peaceful and interesting to explore. Every monument and marker has a story and examining the physical details of the place is like stepping back in time. You can tell they took pride in their community and wanted to leave a mark. What do you think the people of the past would think of our future today?

historic cemeteries

Have you been to a cemetery other than for a funeral or to visit the grave of a loved one? There can be architecture to appreciate and history to explore. The fall colors also make the Halloween season a nice time to do a walk-through and there is an element of spooky fun this time of year. Just be respectful on how you conduct yourself on the grounds and touring a cemetery isn't a big deal. Would you find a trip to a historic cemetery like Oak Hill interesting or would it creep you out?

CODY YELLOWSTONE IS A HIDDEN GEM FOR SNOWMOBILING ENTHUSIASTS

yellowstone national park

With almost 7,000 square miles and a population of only about 30,000 people, Wyoming’s Park County is a wintertime snowmobiling paradise for enthusiasts who enjoy exploring pristine trails and wide-open wilderness. The Cody Yellowstone region of the state truly is a hidden gem to be treasured by snowmobiling enthusiasts. The area has a 1,000 miles of snowmobile trails on land outside Yellowstone National Park plus there are groomed roads for traversing around the park.

Much of the land outside Yellowstone is federally owned and part of the Shoshone National Forest where off-road snowmobiling is permitted. Visitors and residents alike can ride their own sleds or rent them locally. In addition, guided tours are available through a number of Cody outfitters.

“Trails, snow and thermal features – we have everything you need for a memorable snowmobile experience,” Ryan Hauck, executive director of Cody Yellowstone, touted to ageekdaddy.com. “And with the National Park Service (NPS) relaxing some its rules on snowmobiles inside Yellowstone, opportunities are more plentiful than they have been in the past to enjoy the winter weather riding a sled.”

At one point, only commercially guided snowmobile tours were permitted. This year, NPS is allowing both commercially guided and non-guided sledders to enter the park’s East Gate and continue to its world’s-best collection or geysers, hot springs and other thermal features. Snowmobilers must follow posted speed limits and stay on park roads.

Guided tours are available inside the park as well. Gary Fales Outfitting operates at the Rimrock Dude Ranch 25 miles from the East Gate of Yellowstone. Tours of the park range from one to three days with some tours including overnight accommodations in park hotels as well as in gateway communities. The outfitter also rents snowmobiles by the day for self-guided tours.

Snowmobiling not your thing? Cody Yellowstone offers an array of other winter adventures. Sleeping Giant Ski Area features 184 skiable acres and a terrain park constructed of materials found on the hill. In addition to being the only resort in Wyoming with “SNO-GO” bikes, Sleeping Giant will offer night tubing and skiing, a big New Year’s Eve party with live music and yurt and tent rentals for groups.

Visitors who prefer non-downhill activities can try ice-skating Homesteader Park in Powell, climbing on one of many frozen waterfalls or cross country skiing Wood River Valley Ski Touring Park.

Indoor options include watching the Yellowstone Quake Hockey Team, ice skating at the Victor J. Riley Arena or checking out various attractions like the world-class Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Heart Mountain WWII Interpretive Center and the Cody Firearms Experience.

If you are looking for a winter adventure getaway, Cody Yellowstone may be the place you want to be.
