DISNEY PLUS RELEASES PREMIERE DATE FOR WILLOW TV SERIES

willow tv series

The success of Star Wars allowed George Lucas to bring another fantasy tale that he had envisioned to the silver screen. In 1988, the film WILLOW, produced by Lucasfilm and directed by Ron Howard, was released. It is the story of Willow (played by Warwick Davis), a small in stature want to be sorcerer who gets entangled with a baby princess that he attempts to save from death at the hands of an evil queen leading to an adventure through a war-torn land of magic and monsters. While not considered a blockbuster film at movie theaters, WILLOW still made more than a hundred million dollar profit at the box office which is impressive for a 1980s era film and has remained a popular flick that generations of families have now enjoyed watching thanks to its release on home video.

Now Davis is returning to the role of Willow for a new adventure in an upcoming live action series that people can enjoy watching on their television sets via the Disney Plus subscription streaming service. The "Willow" TV series debuts November 30, 2022 on Disney Plus. Produced by Ron Howard, this new TV show will star Warwick Davis along with a diverse international cast.

The story began with an aspiring magician from a Nelwyn village and an infant girl destined to unite the realms, who together helped destroy an evil queen and banish the forces of darkness. Now, in a magical world where brownies, sorcerers, trolls, and other mystical creatures flourish, the adventure continues, as an unlikely group of heroes set off on a dangerous quest to places far beyond their home, where they must face their inner demons and come together to save their world.

MUPPETS MAYHEM

dr teeth and electric mayhem band

One of my favorite aspects of The Muppets has always been the characters that makeup Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. So, I was geeked to find out that the band is getting back together to be featured in an upcoming show now in production for Disney+. THE MUPPETS MAYHEM will be a comedy series that will take the band on a music-filled journey as Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem at long last record their first album. With the help of a driven young music executive, Nora (Lilly Singh), the old-school Muppet band comes face to face with the current day music scene as they try to finally go platinum.

disney plus

Starring in The Muppets Mayhem are Dr. Teeth on vocals and keyboards, Animal on drums, Floyd Pepper on vocals and bass, Janice on vocals and lead guitar, Zoot on saxophone and Lips on trumpet.

DR. TEETH

dr teeth

Dr. Teeth is the lead singer, keyboardist and gravelly-voiced leader of the band. The Electric Mayhem bandleader is green-skinned and red-haired with a large grinning mouth of teeth with a gold tooth that stands out. He sports a scruffy red beard with no mustache, a fur vest, a striped shirt and a floppy purple top hat. His self-introduction in The Muppet Movie exemplifies Dr. Teeth's typically grandiose: "Golden teeth and golden tones. Welcome to my presence."

Dr. Teeth was one of the puppets that was actually handled and voiced by The Muppets creator Jim Henson in performances. The character has arms so long that additional puppeteers are required to guide them; this design enabled Henson to work the puppet while another performer acted as Dr. Teeth's hands in order to play the keyboard. After Henson's death, John Kennedy took over as puppeteer for the character from 1991 - 2003 and Bill Barretta has had the role since.

FLOYD PEPPER

floyd pepper

Floyd Pepper is the left-handed playing bassist and backup singer. A laid back hippie with a pink body and long orange hair, he is often seen sporting a green army cap or other times is decked out in a Beatles' Doctor Pepper inspired red uniform with epaulets and ornate gold braid on the buttons. Although Dr. Teeth is the leader, Floyd is the one who sings lead most often. Some of the songs he sang on the original The Muppet Show include: "New York State of Mind", "Ain't Misbehavin'", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover". He has a close relationship with Janice and is Animal's close friend and handler.

Floyd was performed by Jerry Nelson (1975–2003), John Kennedy (2005–2006), and has since been handled by Matt Vogel. His pink coloring and first name are a homage to the band Pink Floyd with his formal band outfit and last name honoring the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album. The character has a high self-opinion of itself once saying to Kermit the Frog, "you are talking to Floyd Pepper! The hippest of the hip! I mean I have a room for life at the home of the chronically groovy!"

JANICE

janice

Janice is a guitarist and backup singer with a flower child personality. She has blonde hair, big eyelashes and lips, and usually wears a brown hat with a turquoise gem and a feather. Though she regularly performs vocals, Janice has only actually only sang lead a couple of times on-screen. Her favorite guitar is a Gibson Les Paul with cherry sunburst color scheme.

Unlike the other members of the band who have had a limited number of puppeteers, Janice has had more than double the number of any of the other characters. Janice has been performed by Fran Brill (1975–1976), John Lovelady (1975) Eren Ozker (1976), Richard Hunt (1975, 1977–1991), Matt Vogel (2000), Kevin Clash (2001), Brian Henson (2002–2003), Tyler Bunch (2005–2008), and David Rudman (2008–present). Some added trivia here ... Janice is the only member of the band other than Animal to have appeared in the animated series Muppet Babies. Jim Henson meant Janice's name to be a tribute to Janis Joplin and her appearance is meant to resemble Mary Travers from Peter, Paul & Mary.

ANIMAL

muppets animal

Animal may be one of the most recognizable members of Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem band. Even if people don't know the name of the band, everyone knows Animal! He has to be a fan favorite when it comes to The Muppets.

Animal is the primitive wildman drummer for the band. He is the only member of the band to appear in every feature film and the only member to be in the main cast of the Muppet Babies spin-off cartoon. He is named for his wild behavior and drumming. Frank Oz performed Animal from his first appearance until 2000; in 2002 newcomer Eric Jacobson took over. In Muppet Babies, he was voiced by Howie Mandel (1984–1985) and by Dave Coulier (1986–1991). Animal's drumming are recordings of performance by British jazz and big band drummer Ronnie Verrell.

ZOOT

zoot

Zoot is a teal-colored, balding saxophone player with dark glasses and a high-crowned blue felt hat and was generally a laid-back fellow of few words. His name refers to the 20th-century saxophonist Zoot Sims and the puppet is modeled after Latin jazz artist Gato Barbieri. He has been performed by Dave Goelz since the character's creation in 1975.

Zoot's claim to fame is playing the final off-keynote to the end theme of the original The Muppet Show series; he then looks into his saxophone with a bewildered expression, checks his music, gives a satisfied nod, looks around at the other musicians and gives the same nod. Zoot sounds as if he is playing a tenor saxophone though his instrument has the appearance of an alto saxophone.

LIPS

lips

Lips joined the Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem band for several numbers during the final season of The Muppet Show, playing the trumpet. His name refers to the fact that trumpet players use their lips to play. He has yellow hair, goatee and a permanent squint.

Lips was mainly created so that Steve Whitmire could have a character to perform in the band. His lack of character development was apparently due to Whitmire's uncertainty about performing Lips. Whitmire was less experienced as a puppeteer at the time and wanted to use a voice like Louis Armstrong but was afraid of offending African Americans.

muppets electric mayhem band

Lips appeared in the recent ABC network television series The Muppets with the puppet having been completely rebuilt, as the original puppet from The Muppet Show days actually disintegrated during the filming of the The Muppets music video of "Kodachrome" in 2015. Peter Linz took over the character in 2017.

A debut date hasn't been announced yet for Muppets Mayhem which is being produced by Adam F. Goldberg (ABC's The Goldbergs) and the Muppet Studio based upon the characters created by Jim Henson. I for one will absolutely be watching this show when it begins streaming on Disney+.  Rock on Electric Mayhem!

STAR WARS DAY RUMOR

Star Wars Detours

The other day some "old" Star Wars content showed up out of the blue on Disney Plus. My family watched some made-for-tv Star Wars movies that I hadn't seen since being the age my kids are now. Disney Plus has created a Vintage Star Wars viewing category where you can now stream the live action movies EWOKS: CARAVAN OF COURAGE and EWOKS: THE BATTLE FOR ENDOR. These shows were cheesy when they were made and they still are now but both movies were fun to watch.

Hold on tight like Han Solo navigating an asteroid field in the Millennium Falcon for hopefully some Star Wars excitement! There is a rumor circulating that Disney Plus may have a special Star Wars Day surprise by adding a new "old" television series which was produced but never aired to this vintage section of the streaming.

Star Wars: Detours is an animated comedy produced by Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich bringing silly hijinks to a galaxy far far away. The animated series was announced in 2012 and 39 episodes were fully created prior to the project being cancelled in 2013 with the acquisition of the Star Wars brand by Disney from George Lucas.

Yes there are never before shown Star Wars tv episodes waiting in a vault to be shown someday. Maybe that someday will be May the Fourth. May the force be with us that this rumor is true and this Star Wars tv show's detour finally ends with it being streamed on Disney Plus.

Would you be geeked by a May the Fourth surprise of Star Wars: Detours arriving on Disney Plus? Seems like a perfect addition to the Vintage Star Wars section!

ANIMALS ON THE LOOSE

you vs wild animals on the loose

Thanks to Netflix for sending us this special survival kit to enjoy while watching Bear Grylls' newest project ANIMALS ON THE LOOSE that is now available to view exclusively on the streaming service. My kids and I recently started viewing together his You vs Wild television series which allows viewers to use their remote controls in a choose your adventure style format to determine how the wilderness survivalist gets out of a variety of dangerous situations in locals ranging from the frigid mountains to scorching deserts. We've really enjoyed this tv series which lets you determine how Bear Grylls is going to put his life on the line and are excited that Netflix has expanded upon it with a 90-minute interactive You vs Wild movie titled Animals on the Loose.

When wild animals escape from a sanctuary it is up to Bear Grylls -- and you -- to pursue them. Will the directions you give Grylls help return these creatures to their protective habitats or will it cause Bear to end up as the lunch of a hungry animal?! Lions, baboons and a Bear ... oh my! Animals on the Loose is going to make for an exciting family movie night!

So lets see what is inside our Netflix survival kit:

They sent us a survival guide and some gear that included a tent and lantern. Plus some adventurous goodies to snack on while watching Animals on the Loose: A You vs Wild Interactive Movie. Netflix jokingly included a bag of worms to snack on but if Bear Grylls can jump into shark infested waters and wrestle with snakes, this dad blogger can chew on a few bugs. Challenge accepted!

They really do taste like pizza! Thanks for adding some flavoring to them Netflix. Actually they weren't that bad ... tasted somewhat like pizza flavored Pringles!

Niko and the Sword of Light

Amazon is debuting a new original animated kids series, Niko and the Sword of Light, on Prime Video which can be streamed to televisions, computers and a variety of mobile devices beginning July 21, 2017.  My eight year old twins had a chance to watch the 13 episode first season of Niko and the Sword of Light before its official release courtesy of Amazon.com and they were thrilled by it. The story takes place in a once peaceful world full of fantastic creatures that has been enveloped for centuries by the dark magic of the evil sorcerer Nar Est.  He has transformed many of the creatures into dangerous mutated monsters.  The original rulers though have used their own magic to shrink the royal palace along with its inhabitants and place it within a snow globe-sized crystal that is impenetrable by Nar Est though the villain can literally hold them within his grasp.

While the palace's inhabitants can't leave the protection of the crystal globe, they have been utilizing magical energy to create "Champions" to fight Nar Est on their behalf out in the world.  Once every generation a new powerful adult warrior is grown outside the crystal globe from a hidden chrysalis. He emerges with a sword made of light powered by a crystal shard with the mission of defeating Nar Est. This has gone on for hundreds of years and none of the Champions have yet been successful in overcoming the darkness plaguing the world.

The first episode of the series begins with an accident causing the newest Champion's chrysalis to open early.  Instead of an adult emerging out comes a 10-year-old boy named Niko.  The royal palace's council of elders is able to send Princess Lyra to accompany and guide this boy in the world but doesn't have the power to bring her back within their protective enclave.  They hope she can protect the boy long enough for him to grow up to be the Champion who finally defeats the evil sorcerer.  The series follows the exploits of Niko, Princess Lyra and a cast of crazy critters that join them as sidekicks as they traverse the world hoping to reverse the darkness created by Nar Est.

Will Niko be able to free his people and return the world to light?  You'll have to tune in to find out by streaming season one's episodes of Niko and the Sword of Light from Amazon's Prime Video service.

My son said the show was "Amazing!"  He particularly likes seeing Niko undo Nar Est's magical curses on monsters with his light sword and seeing what the animal freed from the sorcerer's darkness looks like. My daughter on the other hand likes checking out Nar Est's mutants and guessing what animals have been combined to create the monsters that Niko faces off against.  One of her favorites was a giant mutant that combined a bull with a spider.

While this is a children's show and my own kids love it, be cautious about allowing preschoolers to watch it.  Niko and the Sword of Light is a combination of Dungeons and Dragons with Pokemon. There are lots of adorable creatures in the show but also some really menacing monsters in it that include flying centipedes, three headed hyenas and the giant mutant spider bull I earlier mentioned.  I could see both of my twins having nightmares after watching some of these episodes if they were a few years younger; but they've both thoroughly enjoyed the show at the age they are at now.  In my opinion Niko and the Sword of Light really is a show more geared for elementary school aged kids. This is one of those show's you're going to have to make a parental determination about whether it is a good fit for your own particular child when dealing with younger children.

Niko and the Sword of Light is full of wonderful imagery.  They really did a great job with the animation!  Inspired by a motion comic app created by Imaginism Studios and StudioNX available on iTunes and GooglePlay, Amazon ordered a 22-minute pilot episode in 2015.  The pilot was an incredible success winning a Daytime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Children's Animated Program" in 2016 spurring Amazon to then ordered a full season of the show that is debuting on its streaming service beginning Friday, July 21st.  You can also get a FREE digital Niko and the Sword of Light comic book that will be available on Comixology (also owned by Amazon) in conjunction with the animated show's release date.  An Amazon Prime membership is necessary to view the full first season of Niko and the Sword of Light though the first episode is currently FREE to watch without a subscription.

Niko and the Sword of Light has earned A GEEK DADDY nod of approval for its originality, energetic flair, great animation style, and most importantly because my kids delighted in watching it.

Curious George swings over to Hulu

We received a nice surprise in the mail the other day when a suitcase full of Curious George's favorite things arrived to let A GEEK DADDY know that his two-time Emmy Award winning television series has moved as of March 31, 2016 to Hulu as its exclusive subscription streaming home.  The suitcase was packed full of gummi hats, including some yellow ones, banana candies, and root beer barrel of monkey to snack on along with a miniature kite because everyone knows that flying kites is one of George's favorite things to do.

While PBS still maintains the television broadcast rights to the highly rated kids television program CURIOUS GEORGE, if you want to Internet stream episodes of the show to view on your TV, computer or mobile device you won't be able to find them through Amazon, Netflix or another online video service because Hulu now has the exclusive rights for the popular series featuring everyone's favorite monkey.  All  nine previous seasons of the CURIOUS GEORGE TV series, over 100 episodes, are now available to watch on Hulu through a multi-year agreement with the show's producers Universal 1440 Entertainment, the production division of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

In addition to allowing past seasons to be accessible through the streaming video service, Hulu will also be allowed to debut future seasons of CURIOUS GEORGE prior to the new episodes being released for television broadcast.  So Hulu will be the U.S. premiere home to new seasons of the series over the coming years.  Also television specials including Curious George: Swings Into Spring, Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest and Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas along with feature-length originals Curious George: Follow That Monkey, Curious George: Back To The Jungle and future direct-to-TV specials will become available to stream exclusively on Hulu.  A very nice aspect of this deal that parents will appreciate is that all these offerings will be available to stream in Hulu's commercial-free Hulu Kids environment.  If your kids adore Curious George as much as mine do it looks like you'll want to be swinging over to Hulu.

Hulu subscriptions begin at $7.99 per month.  For more information, visit www.hulu.com

Free Comic Book Promotes Debut of Netflix's "Jessica Jones" Television Series

Following the success of its television adaption of the comic book Daredevil, Netflix is giving another Marvel character a series.  Jessica Jones will premiere with 13 episodes on November 20, 2015.  To help promote the debut of this new series on Netflix, Marvel has released a FREE digital comic book on Comixology that people can download which provides an overview of the show's main character and how she will be portrayed on TV.

The premise of the show is that after a tragic ending to a short-lived super hero stint, Jessica Jones is rebuilding her life as a private investigator who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.  In the show, she will be working out of Hell's Kitchen (Daredevil's stomping grounds) and working with Luke Cage (who is the lead character of Netflix's planned third television series focusing on the Marvel comic book universe which is set to be released in 2016).  Jessica Jones was originally the lead character in a 28-issue comic book series called Alias created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos that ran from 2001 to 2004. Alias won the Comic Buyers Guide award for "Favorite Comic Series" in 2003, and the Harvey Award for "Best New Series" in 2002.  It was also nominated for two Eisner Awards ( the Oscar of the comic book industry) in 2004 for "Best Continuing Series" and "Best Serialized Story."

Alias was produced by an imprint of Marvel called Max Comics that specialized in R-rated comic books that were filled with graphic violent scenes, mature themes and sexual context.  Jessica Jones is based off of the Alias comic book series and will present a darker and edgier version of the Marvel Universe than has previously been portray on television or in the movies.  Jessica Jones will feature Krysten Ritter as the title character, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, and David Tennant as Zebediah Kilgrave.  Kilgrave who has the power to take over other people's thoughts and actions will be an overarching villain in the series and is tied to how Jessica Jones gave up her super hero identity of Jewel and why she now suffers from alcoholism and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).

In the free comic book by Bendis and Gaydos -- the original creative team behind Alias -- Jessica Jones has been tasked to hunt down a dead beat dad and finds him laid up in a hospital bed after the thug has had a run in with Daredevil.  The way the private investigator handles the situation demonstrates that she clearly has no problem with a Hell's Kitchen style of justice approach to her job.  This comic book is a nice starting off point for beginning to view the Jessica Jones series when all the episodes become available for streaming on November 20th.  CLICK HERE to download the free comic book from Comixology.
