MONKEY BUSINESS: The Story of George's Curious Creators - Hans & Margret Rey

Curious George has been a part of my life as long as I can remember.  The stories of this mischievous monkey were one of my favorite bedtime stories when I was young and now that I'm a parent the book holds an important spot on my children's bookshelf because my kids love the adventures of Curious George just as much as I did at their age.  I've looked at the covers and flipped through the pages of Curious George books more times than I can count, but I honestly couldn't tell you anything about his creators Hans and Margret Rey.  An upcoming film maker named Ema Ryan Yamazki thinks that it is a shame that so many people enjoy the adventures of George but know so little about the remarkable lives of the husband and wife creative duo who created the children's books featuring the curious little monkey so she is creating a documentary telling the story of Hans and Margret Rey.

To help share Hans and Margret Rey's story with the world, Yamazki is asking for help in financing the completion of her documentary, MONKEY BUSINESS, through a KICKSTARTER campaign. In addition to helping fund a wonderful documentary, supporters of the campaign also will receive thank you gifts depending on their level of contribution that include timeless original Hans Rey prints on items ranging from t-shirts, tote bags and coffee mugs to Curious George inspired kites and beach balls.  Whether you can contribute $5 or $5,000 every dollar helps in bringing this documentary to fruition.

Hans was living in Paris, France with his wife Margret in the late 1930s working as a cartoonist for a newspaper.  A publisher enjoyed Hans' cartoons of wild animals and asked him to create a children's book featuring them.  While the book that resulted Raffy and the Nine Monkeys wasn't very successful it did prompt Margret to begin working with Hans on a standalone book featuring one of its mischievous monkeys named Curious George.  The Reys had just finished their manuscript for Curious George which involved Margret writing the text and Hans providing the illustrations, when the Nazis invaded France.

As German Jews living in Paris, the Reys knew they were in danger if they stayed in France.  Hans cobbled together two bicycles from spare parts and on the morning of June 14, 1940 the Reys fled the city with only warm coats, some food, and the manuscript for Curious George.  The Nazi army entered Paris just a few hours after Hans and Margret had departed heading to Spain.  Making their way to Brazil, they founded Rio de Janeiro's first advertising agency and also had Curious George published in 1941.

The Reys eventually moved to the United States to focus on a career as children's book authors producing six more Curious George stories between 1947 and 1966. The Rey's final story, Curious George Goes to the Hospital, was written after representatives from Boston Children's Hospital contacted the couple asking if they could write a book to help prepare children for a hospital stay.  Apparently, the Reys took a lot of satisfaction from this book because parents would frequently write to them thanking it for easing a child's hospital visit.

In creating MONKEY BUSINESS, Yamazki discovered that astonishing details documenting the Rey's escape from Paris and their lives as children's book authors had been carefully preserved in more than 300 boxes of materials stored at the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection at the University of Southern Mississippi.  These included Hans' wartime journals, photographs taken by Margret, unpublished George sketches, brainstorming notes, and letters to and from the book's publisher.  With the cooperation of the Rey Estate, MONKEY BUSINESS provides a "behind-the-scenes glimpse of how Curious George came to be.

One of the aspects of the documentary that really impresses me is how MONKEY BUSINESS transforms portions of it into animated sequences that mimic the style of Hans' Curious George illustrations.  I found it to be a touching tribute witnessing Hans and Margret both in real life photographs and how they would have appeared if transformed into the pages of one of their books.  MONKEY BUSINESS combines animated sequences that are integrated with archived material from the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection  and interviews of people who knew the Reys personally or have studied the couple's artistic and literary accomplishments.   Add in a narrator and graphical elements like page turns and MONKEY BUSINESS promises to evoke the feeling of flipping through the pages of a Curious George book.

2016 is the 75th anniversary of the original publication of Curious George.  Bringing MONKEY BUSINESS to completion would be a wonderful way to celebrate this milestone year for a character who has meant so much to so many people since his inception in 1941.  Let's help share the story of how this curious monkey came to be by supporting Ema Ryan Yamazki's KICKSTARTER campaign today. Curious George swings over to Hulu

We received a nice surprise in the mail the other day when a suitcase full of Curious George's favorite things arrived to let A GEEK DADDY know that his two-time Emmy Award winning television series has moved as of March 31, 2016 to Hulu as its exclusive subscription streaming home.  The suitcase was packed full of gummi hats, including some yellow ones, banana candies, and root beer barrel of monkey to snack on along with a miniature kite because everyone knows that flying kites is one of George's favorite things to do.

While PBS still maintains the television broadcast rights to the highly rated kids television program CURIOUS GEORGE, if you want to Internet stream episodes of the show to view on your TV, computer or mobile device you won't be able to find them through Amazon, Netflix or another online video service because Hulu now has the exclusive rights for the popular series featuring everyone's favorite monkey.  All  nine previous seasons of the CURIOUS GEORGE TV series, over 100 episodes, are now available to watch on Hulu through a multi-year agreement with the show's producers Universal 1440 Entertainment, the production division of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

In addition to allowing past seasons to be accessible through the streaming video service, Hulu will also be allowed to debut future seasons of CURIOUS GEORGE prior to the new episodes being released for television broadcast.  So Hulu will be the U.S. premiere home to new seasons of the series over the coming years.  Also television specials including Curious George: Swings Into Spring, Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest and Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas along with feature-length originals Curious George: Follow That Monkey, Curious George: Back To The Jungle and future direct-to-TV specials will become available to stream exclusively on Hulu.  A very nice aspect of this deal that parents will appreciate is that all these offerings will be available to stream in Hulu's commercial-free Hulu Kids environment.  If your kids adore Curious George as much as mine do it looks like you'll want to be swinging over to Hulu.

Hulu subscriptions begin at $7.99 per month.  For more information, visit www.hulu.com

All new family-friendly comedy "MONKEY UP" stars Hollywood's most famous simian

Though you may not know her name you probably recognize the face because Crystal the monkey has had a supporting role in a number of Hollywood films including Eddie Murphy's Dr. Doolittle, American Pie, The Hangover Part II, Failure to Launch, We Bought a Zoo and The Night at the Museum trilogy of movies.  She's also appeared on television shows such as The Big Bang Theory and Malcom in the Middle.  Now Crystal the Capuchin monkey is getting her first shot at a leading role in the full length feature  MONKEY UP from Air Bud Entertainment, the creators of the 'Air Bud' and 'Buddies' puppy dog movies.

In the newest movie from Air Bud Entertainment, we are introduced to Monty who is a precocious actor, product spokesperson and ... talking monkey!  He's the face of the energy drink, 'Monkey Up,' but dreams of becoming the first award-winning monkey movie star.  When the greedy owner of Monkey Up has other plans for Monty, the chase is on! He escapes with the help of his new family, the Andrews, and his hilarious primate siblings, Mort, Mooner, and Melody in an uproaring chase that proves Monty really is as he puts it the 'fast and the furriest.' Through this adventure Monty discovers that fame and fortune come and go, but family is forever!

Our family had a chance to pre-screen MONKEY UP and I have to give Air Bud Entertainment credit for knowing their audience because while parents may roll their eyes at the acting and adventures portrayed in the movie their children will be delighted and relish the high jinks.  My seven year old son was all smiles through the movie and was laughing up a storm.  Preschoolers and elementary school aged children will love this film with its talking monkeys, comedic stunts, and wisecracking jokes.

Since my son enjoyed this movie so much, A Geek Daddy wanted to share the fun with our readers as well so we have a MONKEY UP dvd to giveaway.  To be eligible for this giveaways you must be over 18 years old, reside in US or Canada, follow @Geekdad248 on Twitter and retweet our original contest tweet which is embedded below before January 31, 2016 @ 11:59 pm EST.  Simple as that!  Each RT will be assigned a number based on the order it was received and random.org shall select our winner.

AMC Theaters will exclusively be showing MONKEY UP from January 22 through 28, 2016 on 50 screens in the top U.S. markets.  Proceeds from the week-long run at AMC Theaters will benefit Starlight Children's Foundation, a leading global charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and health for kids and families around the world.  MONKEY UP will also be available to purchase via Digital HD on January 19 and is being released on DVD, February 2, 2016.

Crystal will be joined in MONKEY UP by John Ratzenberger (Cliff from Cheers and the voice of numerous characters in the Pixar films), David Milchard (YouTube sensation Convos with my 2-Year Old), Danny Woodburn (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2), Erin Allin O'Reilly (Dumb and Dumber To), Jonathan Mangum (House at the end of the Drive) and Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect 2).  Astin will be voicing Monty as obviously Crystal can't really speak ... can she? MONKEY UP is directed by Robert Vince and produced by Anna McRoberts.

Looking for a lighthearted comedy that is sure to have young children giggling and laughing? You'll want to watch MONKEY UP for a family movie night.  The film has been rated 'Family Friendly' by the Dove Foundation which recognizes movies, DVDs, made for TV productions, books, and other entertainment products that portray and encourage positive values.  MONKEY UP has been rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) -- probably for scenes that show excessive poop throwing.  People with an aversion to bath room humor be warned -- there is some really juvenile humor that your kids are sure to enjoy!

Our Weekend With Dexter - The mischievous monkey from "Night at the Museum" swung by for a visit

As part of his whirl wind tour of the United States to promote the March 10, 2015 release of "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb" for blu-ray, dvd, and digital download the mischievous monkey from the movie Dexter swung by our house this weekend for a visit.  He tagged along for some of our normal weekend activities like going grocery shopping, to my daughter's dance class, and the twins' swimming lessons plus we enjoyed an afternoon at the Detroit Zoo's Wild Winter Safari Social.

Our family has annual passes to the Detroit Zoo which is about a fifteen minute drive from our home so we go there often, even during Michigan's cold weather months.  The zoo was holding some special events this weekend that included crafts, games, a magic show, an artwork gallery exhibition and a scavenger hunt around the zoo to locate animal facts from the placards displayed at various exhibits.

The kids made binoculars and safari vests, with a little help from Dexter, at the Safari Social's craft tables.  It's remarkable how much fun kids can have with paper grocery bags, toilet paper rolls, some duct tape and string.

After we had our binoculars and safari vests ready to wear for our scavenger hunt adventure, the kids played some games for a chance to win prizes.  Dexter really cheered them on as they hurled hula hoops over the necks of various animals in these contests.  I'm not sure though if that monkey was cheering on the kids or teasing the stuffed animals who were having hoops thrown at their heads.

Then we watched a humorous magic show by the Amazing Clark before wandering outside to explore the zoo and participate in the scavenger hunt.

Though we all had fun at the zoo, Dexter seemed more wild about experiencing the routine things our normal, middle class, Midwestern family does most weekends.  He gave some great tips on finding the best bananas at the grocery store and showed us how useful a tail can be when it comes to folding laundry.  Dexter insisted on going to my daughter's ballet class where he showed off his movie star talents insisting on participating in a pas de deux and demonstrating some incredible pirouettes for the class.

We wrapped up the weekend at the twins' swimming lessons and while Dexter enjoyed playing with the kids along side the pool he wanted nothing to do with getting dipped into the water - I don't think the monkey knows how to swim.

After a fun weekend of activities with our family, Dexter was off to the next stop on this "Night at the Museum 3" publicity tour.  You can follow Dexter's adventures as he travels across the country by searching for the hashtag #TrackDexter on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook.  Also don't forget to check out Dexter's newest movie "Night at the Museum 3" on blu-ray, dvd, or via digital download.
