So, I had some nostalgic flashbacks of those times when hearing that a Depeche Mode concert film will be shown in October on IMAX screens at movie theaters across the country.
DEPECHE MODE: M is a unique cinematic journey into the heart of Mexican culture's relationship with death, framed by the iconic live performances of Depeche Mode during their 2023-2024 Memento Mori tour. The feature-length film takes audiences on a musical and spiritual journey, as the songs resonate in real time with fans, illustrating their timeliness multi-cultural influence while delving into the profound connection between music, mortality, and Mexican tradition.

Greg MacGillivray has had an amazing Hollywood career as a cinematographer that has lasted more than 60 years. Helping create The Shining, Big Wednesday, The Towering Inferno, Blade Runner, Jonathan Livingston Seagull and Koyaanisqatsi before becoming a pioneering director of films in the 70mm IMAX® format. MacGillivray created some of the most iconic cinematography ever captured for giant screen films, including EVEREST, the highest-grossing IMAX film of all time. While known for his IMAX movies, MacGillivray originally gained fame for producing surfing movies.
Gary MacGillivray's FIVE SUMMER STORIES (1972), widely considered one of the greatest surf films ever made is celebrating its 50th Anniversary with a return to movie theaters. Adventure Entertainment is bringing this beloved epic documentary to audiences theatrically across North America (U.S. and Canada) in cinemas in more than 50 markets. This 50th Anniversary theatrical release is timed to coincide with the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, when surfing captures the imagination of viewers around the world.
Filmmakers will be in attendance for Q&As at screening events in select markets, and community partnerships with the Surfrider Foundation, a grassroots nonprofit ocean conservation organization, as well as Quiksilver, a heritage surf brand, will support these events in select locations. Quiksilver will be releasing a limited edition t-shirt for the film’s release, available soon. Visit fivesummerstories.com to find screening locations.
FIVE SUMMER STORIES first premiered in 1972 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and was quickly deemed “the greatest surf film ever made.” The film’s unusual format—a montage of five-plus stories or vignettes—perfectly captured a fractured era in which an explosion of creativity and revolutionary change was shaking down the old order, taking the sport of surfing off into new and unknown territory. Although the film went through several (and increasingly popular) incarnations as it played in theaters over a seven-year span from 1972 to 1979, its fundamental story remained the same—that the pure, innocent joy of surfing was symbolic of humankind’s best possibilities on Earth without war or politics or environmental destruction. The film features music by the Beach Boys and Honk.
Additionally, following the theatrical re-release of FIVE SUMMER STORIES will be Greg MacGillivray’s visual memoir, Five Hundred Summer Stories, coming out on November 15th, 2022. Illustrated with more than 500 photographs and filmmaking artifacts from MacGillivray’s extensive archive, as well as story contributions by legendary surfers Gerry Lopez and Bill Hamilton, and filmmakers such as Stephen Judson, Brad Ohlund and Howard Hall. My daughter LOVES the movie E.T.! She has a plush toy of the alien in her room, had a Halloween costume one year of her dressed as Elliot with E.T. attached to a bike handle and whenever visiting Orlando we have to stop by Universal Studios theme park to take her on their ride. She is going to be so GEEKED that a digitally remastered version of the film is being released on IMAX for theatrical showings to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the movie.
Wow! How time flies! I remember being eight years old and seeing the original release of E.T. when it first came out. Snacked on the Reese's Pieces that were being hyped at the snack stand which were plugged in the movie. It was an exciting outing to the movie theater and I was just the right age for it to be very relatable to me. Especially, the bike scenes as my friends and I would spend hours every day back then riding around our neighborhood.
So, obviously my family has an appreciation for this movie! It is going to be fun to see it on a giant IMAX screen. Though noting it is a "classic" 40 year old movie is making me feel old. Yet there is nothing like bringing out your inner child as an adult then watching a nostalgic movie with your own kids who also enjoy seeing it.
For more information on going to see E.T. on an IMAX screen, go to imax.com
Here is some news that has this '80s kid GEEKED, E.T. is being rereleased for theatrical showings exclusively on IMAX screens to celebrate the film's 40th anniversary. The trailer for the new IMAX release of E.T. will premiere during showings of Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s Jurassic World Dominion which arrives at theaters on June 10, almost 40 years to the day since E.T. originally debuted in theaters on June 11, 1982. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial will then be released exclusively on IMAX screens nationwide beginning August 12, 2022.E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, originally released in the summer of 1982, not only soared to become the highest-grossing film of the year, capturing four Academy Awards® and nine Oscar® nominations including Best Picture, but it also captured the hearts of audiences around the globe. Four decades later, it still ignites the joy, wonder, discovery, magic and heartbreak of childhood. And E.T. isn't just nostalgic for us '80s kids, because my 13-year-old daughter LOVES the film and I am sure is going to demand that we go to see it on an IMAX screen this summer for a family outing to the movie theater.
IMAX is also bringing another classic Steven Spielberg summer blockbuster back to movie theaters this year with JAWS. The 1975 thriller will be released on IMAX screens and can be seen for the first time in RealD 3D beginning September 2. Duunnn dunnn… duuuunnnn duun… duuunnnnnnnn dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun ... will you be wrapping up your summer by going to see the original JAWS movie on an IMAX screen in 3D?
Originally released on June 20, 1975, Jaws, based on the best-selling novel by Peter Benchley, became the first true summer blockbuster and a cultural tsunami. It shattered every record to become the highest-grossing film of the year, earning a nomination for Best Picture and winning three Academy Awards®, including one for John Williams’ iconic musical score. Almost five decades later, Jaws has become inexorable from global film culture, has inspired multiple generations of filmmakers and remains one of the most thrilling, terrifying and unforgettable films of all time.
With Jurassic World Dominion, E.T. and JAWS playing on IMAX screens it will be a great summer to go watch some great Steven Spielberg brands at the movie theater!

DUNE promises to be a BIG movie! It is being theatrically released in October as well as have a simultaneous debut on the HBO Max streaming service. And while you may be able to see the movie from home streaming it on your television this is a flick you are going to want to see on IMAX!
IMAX just debuted their promotional poster for the movie and I'm sure a lot of sci-fi fans are going to be geeked to see this movie on the big IMAX screens at theaters. I've heard the sets for the film were so big that actors got lost while moving around them. Plus you want to see those big sand worms tower over the audience on the silver screen. This science fiction movie has so many big elements to it seeing it on IMAX is the way to go.
DUNE is based upon is one of the most popular science fiction novels ever published, written by author Frank Herbert in 1965. The book tied with Roger Zelazny's This Immortal for the Hugo Award [recognizing the best in science fiction] and also won Nebula Award for Best Novel. The story was adapted into a movie in 1984 that bombed at the box office. I've never read DUNE or its five sequel novels and didn't like the 1984 film which featured Kyle MacLachlan, Sting, Virginia Madsen, and Patrick Stewart; but I know bunch of fans of the books and insist that if this new movie faithfully follows Herbert's story it will be extraordinary. So I'm all in for seeing Warner Bros. DUNE directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival / Blade Runner 2049) when it arrive on IMAX screens this fall.
A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, DUNE tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
For more information, visit the film's official website dunemovie.com or its social media accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Look for IMAX movie theater locations at imax.com. And if you aren't following a Geek Daddy on social media check out @Geekdad248 on Twitter and Instagram.

DREAM BIG: ENGINEERING OUR WORLD, the first giant-screen movie to promote the educational STEM (Science, Technology, Math) movement, is being shown through March at the Michigan Science Center's Chrysler IMAX Dome. Narrated by Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges, Dream Big showcases engineering wonders big and small, ranging from the ancient Great Wall of China to today's largest buildings. Be inspired by engineering feats that allow for underwater robots to explore our planet's oceans, solar cars to race across a continent without using a drop of gasoline, and learn about efforts to make the world's large cities more environmentally sustainable.
Dream Big hopes to encourage interest in STEM with the kids that will be the next generation of engineers through sharing stories that include a young woman engineer building bridges in undeveloped countries and an underprivileged high school robotics team that tackles the odds against them to humanize the field of engineering. Dream Big's producers hope the movie will encourage academic achievement, student engagement, and parent involvement with STEM topics.

Though I was only seven years old, I still have a vivid recollection of the day my parents took me on an afternoon trip to explore the science center in Detroit. It's been years since I'd paid a visit and my seven year old twins had never been there before. So being they're the same age as my first adventure to the place it seemed a fitting time for a road trip to the Michigan Science Center. Located next door to the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) in Detroit's Midtown neighborhood, the Michigan Science Center features more than 250 hands-on exhibits that can be educational and interesting for people of all ages.
Learn how telescopes work and by viewing a representation of the moon through a variety of lenses in the center's space exploration section which also displays a NASA rocket capsule that was one of the highlight's of my childhood visits to the science center.
This astronomy area is also home to the Dassault Systèmes Planetarium which houses a Digistar® II projection
system with 13,000-watt Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound that projects upon a
50-foot-wide, three-story-high-dome. Check out a variety of live shows like OUR PLACE IN SPACE.
OUR PLACE IN SPACE begins with a
tour of the current night sky and the state of Michigan, then gradually
zooms out to reveal the size of asteroids and dwarf planets. Your journey
then continues providing a view of the planets of our Solar System, the Sun, other
stars, and finally provides a glimpse of the entire galaxy.
Other areas of the exhibit let visitors explore the fundamental properties of matter, motion, energy, and time.
In addition to the exhibits, the Michigan Science Center also provides a variety of shows and demonstrations. The SPARKS ELECTRICITY SHOW provides entertaining examples of various facets of electricity including magnetism, static electricity and plasma. Demonstrations are also provided on the CHRYSLER SCIENCE STAGE involving topics such as chemistry, physics, and life science.
A highlight of any visit is also watching an IMAX presentation on the largest movie screen in Michigan. This 67.5 foot wide, five story high dome theater envelopes audience in a thrilling sensory experience. We saw National Parks Adventure which honors the centennial anniversary of the United State Park Service by taking its viewers on climbing, hiking and sailing experiences through the caves, rivers, forests, mountains and other stunning landscapes within the country's famous, as well as lesser known, parks.
After enjoying the movie it was up the rainbow escalator to head home. I was always excited by this neon light show as a kid and my own children though it was a great way to wrap up our visit. We had a great family road trip and if you are in the Detroit area encourage you to find some time to swing by and explore the Michigan Science Center for yourself. There is always something new to discover at the science center!
