ROGUE ONE ON IMAX SCREENS

ROGUE ONE IMAX

Of the eleven Star Wars movies, ROGUE ONE ranks 3rd on my favorites list. Sorry Return of the Jedi! With the upcoming ANDOR television series coming to the Disney+ streaming service, the movie that featured this new show's primary character, Rebel Alliance intelligence agent Cassian Jeron Andor, is returning to movie theaters.

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY is being re-released on IMAX screens for a limited engagement of movie theater showings on August 26th. In addition to the featured presentation, the screenings will also include an exclusive look at the upcoming Disney+ ANDOR series. Who else is geeked about this? I sure am!

DISNEY+ ANNOUNCES PREMIERE DATE FOR STAR WARS: ANDOR TV SERIES

Star Wars Andor premiere date

After the original trilogy of films, ROGUE ONE is my next favorite Star Wars movie. So, I'm really interested in seeing how the new live action TV series "Star Wars: Andor" that is coming to the Disney+ subscription streaming service pans out. The wait to find out is almost over as Disney+ has released a trailer and announced the show will premiere on August 31, 2022. A nice parting gift for the end of summer from Disney!

The “Andor” series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.

For those of you who may have not seen ROGUE ONE which tells the story of how the Rebel Alliance gets their hands on the Death Star plans which are a critical plot point of the Star Wars film A New Hope (aka the first Star Wars movie), Cassian Andor is a lead character in that prequel movie. Cassian, played by Diego Luna, is an intelligence officer engaged in espionage against the Empire. Luna returns to the role for this Andor series. Like the Kenobi series, Andor will debut on Disney+ with its first two episodes being released at once.

disney+ andor premiere

I don't know a whole lot about this show, but from what I've seen of the trailer I'm excited. Who else is geeked about seeing this new Star Wars show on Disney+?!

" ROGUE ONE: A Star Wars Story " Family Movie Night

** A Geek Daddy received the featured product for free **

I spent an evening relaxing the other night by kicking up my shoes and watching ROGUE ONE: A Star Wars Story on my living room television with my wife and kids.  This film ss one of my Top 3 favorites of the 8 Star Wars movies that have been made so far.  So I've anxiously been waiting to add ROGUE ONE to my home video library.

The movie was just released on Digital HD this last weekend.  Digital HD is when movies or television shows are purchased or rented in a digital format that features a 1080p high definition picture by streaming or downloading them.  Disney Movies Anywhere kindly provided us ROGUE ONE through their service plus a fun pack of goodies so that we could have a fun Star Wars themed Family Movie Night in conjunction with the Digital HD release of the film.

Disney Movies Anywhere allows you to purchase Digital HD versions of Disney, Disney Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars movies, store them via the cloud in one central spot, and access them anytime on the device of your choice.  Whether it is on your smart phone, tablet, PC or television Disney Movies Anywhere gives you the freedom to watch your movies when and how you want.  While the movies are stored online and can be streamed to a mobile device, TV, or computer, Disney Movies Anywhere also allows you to download your movies so users have an option to view their shows when an Internet connection isn't available.  Plus you can earn Disney Movie Rewards points for your purchases made through Disney Movies Anywhere and some titles also include exclusive content such as never-before-seen videos, new original programming, and other special perks.

We enjoyed our ROGUE ONE family movie night by streaming the movie from our Disney Movies Anywhere account to our big screen television using a ROKU player. Just plug a ROKU streaming stick into the HDMI port of your television to connect it to the Internet and watch any of the items in your Disney Movies Anywhere account's library.  After making up some blue milk like they enjoy drinking in a galaxy far, far away and grabbing some special edition Star Wars Cheez-It baked snack crackers to snack on from the kitchen we just had to plug in our ROKU, jump on the couch, and start streaming the show.

Here's how we make our Star Wars inspired Blue Milk:

Ingredients

1 cup of milk;
1/2 teaspoon of Kool-Aid Liquid Blue Raspberry Drink Mix;
1/2 teaspoon of sugar.

Directions
  • Pour the milk into a tall glass and gently stir in the blue raspberry drink mix;
  • The drink should initially be light tinted blue.  Add more of the fruit punch mix to get a darker color if you desire;
  • Add sugar to sweeten the taste.

ROGUE ONE: A Star Wars Story tells the epic story of a group of unlikely heroes who band together on a mission to steal the plans for the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction -- the Death Star. It concludes where the original Star Wars movie, A New Hope, begins.  ROGUE ONE answers a question that Star Wars fans have been asking since A New Hope was released in 1977 -- how did Princess Leia get her hands on the Death Star plans in that movie.  ROGUE ONE is a nicely done film that will appeal to a new generation of Star Wars fan with its impressive special effects, well done casting, funny one liners and numerous action sequences while also providing much of the same tone and elements of the first trilogy of movies so that those, like myself, who have enjoyed this franchise over the last 40 years will be very satisfied by it.  While my favorite scene involves Darth Vader going on a rampage, the twins favorite part is the space battle over the planet of Scarif which they like to re-enact with their Star Wars toys.

In addition to being available on DigitalHD now, ROGUE ONE is being released on Blu-ray and DVD on April 4, 2017.   In addition to the feature presentation, the home video formats also contains never-before- seen ROGUE ONE bonus material that will take fans behind the scenes with the movie’s diverse, dynamic cast and inspired team of filmmakers. An intimate collection of stories reveals how the film came to life, as well as hidden Easter Eggs and film facts that audiences may have missed in the theater.

Bonus features include*:
  • A Rogue Idea – Hear how ILM’s John Knoll came up with the movie’s concept – and why it’s the right film to launch the Star Wars stand-alone films.
  • Jyn: The Rebel – Get to know Rogue One’s defiant, resourceful survivor, and hear what it was like for Felicity Jones to bring her to life onscreen.
  • Cassian: The Spy – Diego Luna shares insights into his complex, driven character, who becomes a hero through selflessness, perseverance and passion.

JOIN IN A ROGUE ONE TWITTER PARTY DUEL ON 3/26

The answer to a question that has been on Star Wars fans minds since the original movie debuted in 1977 was answered last year.  How did Princess Leia get her hands on the Death Star plans that Darth Vader was chasing after in the opening sequence of that movie?  Last December, Disney released its first Star Wars standalone film, ROGUE ONE, which tells the epic story of a group of unlikely heroes who band together on a mission to steal the plans for the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction -- the Death Star. This brand new adventure expands the Star Wars universe in its own unique way yet its plot also nicely wraps into the previous movies enhancing the franchise's overall story.

 I really enjoyed ROGUE ONE when I saw it at the theater (ranking it as one of my top three favorite films in the Star Wars franchise) and have been waiting in anticipation to add it to my home video collection.  Well the wait is finally over!  ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY is available TODAY (3/24/17) on Digital HD and will be available to get on Blu-ray or DVD beginning April 4th.

Disney Movies Anywhere and Roku set-up my family to enjoy a fun movie night this weekend by providing us with a free ROGUE ONE Digital HD code and some Star Wars goodies. Follow @Geekdad248 along with my other #TEAMEMPIRE Twitter Party panelists on Sunday, March 26, 2017 from 7pm ET (4 pm PT) until the movie ends.  The #RogueOneDigital Twitter Party will be full of movie commentary, Star Wars trivia and prizes.  Purchase the Digital HD edition of ROGUE ONE: A Star Wars Story from Disney Movies Anywhere and watch it along with us as we chat on Twitter.  RSVP to join in the #RogueOneDigital Twitter Party -- it will be a blast!

Star Wars Celebration Roundup

This last weekend there was a huge gathering of fans at the convention center in Anaheim California celebrating all things Star Wars.  If you were like me and wanted to go but just didn't have the extra time and money for a trip to CA, here's a roundup of many of the exciting announcements and previews that came out of STAR WARS CELEBRATION 2015.  The rest of this year and into next year is going to be full of Star Wars thrills!

MOVIES

Disney's first feature film since acquiring the Star Wars franchise hits theaters on December 18, 2018.  THE FORCE AWAKENS is set in a time of the Star Wars continuum approximately 30 years after the events that transpired in the movie RETURN OF THE JEDI uniting George Lucas' original trilogy of movies with a new era of story telling under Disney's stewardship.  A new trailer for the film was released at Star Wars Celebration and it really has given me a lot of encouragement that Disney is getting this film right producing something that old school fans like myself will love and a new generation of movie watchers will adore.  Check it out!

Disney also hosted a panel discussion at Star Wars Celebration about another new Star Wars movie it is producing called ROGUE ONE that will be hitting theaters during the 2016 Christmas season.  The film's director Gareth Edwards presented the official plot for the movie: A rogue band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans.  Edwards noted that the film which will take place between Episodes III and IV of the Star Wars movie timeline will have a focus on the WAR aspect of Star WARS.  "It is called Star WARS" he joked to the panel audience.  To add some grit and realism to ROGUE ONE's portrayal of warfare, Edwards has enlisted members of his production team that have worked on war movies such as Zero Dark Thirty, Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down.

Filming for ROGUE ONE will take place this summer.  While the film hasn't been shot yet, Edwards did provide a glimpse at some concept art prepared for the movie and a teaser video of computer generated imagery to give people a sense of the vibe he wants for the Star Wars: Rogue One.  As the first stand alone movie, though it is somewhat tied to the others through the Death Star connection, this film really will have a big impact on Disney's long term viability for making more and more Star Wars movies.  Disney can't afford to have this movie be a JOHN CARTER type bust and it appears they are taking its production very seriously.  Just from the limited information I have on this movie already though I'm already excited about it and looking forward to learning more in the coming months ahead.

TELEVISION

DisneyXD's Star Wars: Rebels animated television series is returning this Fall for a second season.  When my 6 year old son thinks of Star Wars this TV series has really been his first exposure to these tales from a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.  This is a show that is very suitable for him to watch yet I also find very entertaining and interesting to watch as well.  The two of us have really enjoyed some bonding time together watching this show.  The trailer released at Star Wars Celebration shows that DisneyXD may be expanding upon a great first season with an even more incredible second season.

I really don't like the prequel movie trilogy -- it just stripped away too much of the magic and mystery of the original movies -- but found the Clone Wars animated television shows to be a decent program.  One of my favorite all time Star Wars characters actually is from the Clone Wars series, Cad Bane, a deadly bounty hunter that would give the legendary Boba Fett a run for his money. For my own personal viewing enjoyment, I just wipe out the prequel trilogies and the Star Wars timeline currently is made up of the Clone Wars and Rebels television shows, the original movies (Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) and the upcoming Disney movies.  Because there is a large viewing audience that is younger than me that grew up watching Clone Wars on the Cartoon Network and a more "mature" group of fans like myself, Rebels is bringing some of these characters back.  Check out the trailer to see for yourself!

I'm really looking forward to watching with my son the showdown between his favorite Star Wars character, Ezra, and one of my favorite childhood villains Darth Vader.

VIDEO GAMES

Electronic Arts showed off their first collaboration with Star Wars in its BattleFront video game.  I can't wait until November to load this game up on my Playstation4 and immerse myself in tackling the Empire from a speeder bike or x-wing.

COMIC BOOKS

I have to give kudos to Marvel because since taking over the brand they haven't just used it to cash in on the name, they've been publishing a great product.  I've read every issue they've published of their new series STAR WARS and DARTH VADER and have enjoyed every one of them.  Lando Calrissian will be joining these titles with his own mini-series STAR WARS: LANDO beginning in July which will feature a story that takes place between the events in A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back.  Also coming in September will be a mini-series titled SHATTERED EMPIRE that will share what happened after the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi and bridge some of the gap between the movies Episode VI and the upcoming Episode VII.

The current story arc in Marvel's STAR WARS will wrap up in issue #6 this summer and a new arc will begin with issue #8.  Star Wars #7 will be a stand alone story featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi during his exile on Tatooine.

So there you have it! It looks like there are going to be a lot of thrills for Star Wars fans throughout the rest of the year and into next.  I for one am really going to be enjoying it!
