Corinna Bechko who wrote one of my all-time favorite comic book series, Image Comics sci-fi themed INVISIBLE REPUBLIC, is now scripting a new horror title for EC Comics being released this summer. Bechko is teaming up with Eisner Award-winning illustrator Andrea Sorrentino for BLOOD TYPE which digs deeper into a vampire first introduced within a previously published short story from an EC Comics anthology of horror tales.

Picking up in the immediate aftermath of Ada’s first appearance in the titular short story “Blood Type” from EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS #3, BLOOD TYPE is intended to be the first in a new slate of semi-regular EC Comics limited series that will spotlight and continue a select few of the razor-sharp short stories introduced in the pages of EC’s monthly anthology titles. The first issue will be released with multiple covers to choose from by Miguel Mercado (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Andrea Sorrentino (Bone Orchard), Albert Monteys (Universe!), and Naomi Franq (Black Hammer: Barbalien), BLOOD TYPE #1 seeps into comic shops everywhere on June 18th.

After a pandemic interruption, a sign of things returning to normal is here with the resumption of FREE COMIC BOOK DAY; which is returning to its traditional date of taking place on the first Saturday in May. On Saturday, May 7, 2022, comic book shops across the United States will be handing out specially printed Free Comic Book Day issues to promote interest in the genre and generate foot traffic to brick and mortar retail locations. Celebrate favorite brands including Marvel and Disney with stories about Donald Duck and Spider-Man or discover new characters such as Jonna, Max Meow and Tex featured in free comic books you can pick up on May 7th.
There are forty-nine special issues being published this year for Free Comic Book Day which range in content from appropriate for any age to aimed for audiences over eighteen. There will be a color coded logo on the cover of each title which designates a comic book's age rating. Green is suitable reading material for all ages (children, teens & adults). Blue is appropriate for readers 13+ years old. Red designates mature content meant for adults. One of my family's favorite days of the year is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY. Traditionally the first Saturday in May, my kids as well of myself are always geeked to visit local comic shops and return home with a bundle of books to spend the rest of the afternoon flipping through. We've been participating in this event since my kids were toddlers and were bummed that due to the pandemic what had become a family tradition that my children and I looked forward to doing together every year was cancelled for 2020.
I have some big news though ... drum roll please → FREE COMIC BOOK DAY is returning for 2021! Yes the event will be back for its 20th anniversary! To provide some more time for the pandemic to peter out though its traditional May date is moving to August. While the date may be changing though local retailers handing out tons of FREE comic books isn't changing. So mark your calendars for Saturday, August 14 to take part in FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2021.
This event is meant to get people to visit these local small businesses which many were severely negatively impacted by the pandemic. I paid my favorite shop a couple hundred dollars up front during the worst of months for a store credit on my future purchases to help with their cash flow. If you appreciate the experience of holding in your hand and reading a physical printed comic book it is essentially to keep these small businesses alive.
So while FREE COMIC BOOK DAY is a fun and exciting experience, please keep in mind stopping into these shops from time to time to spend some money so these fantastic places will continue to be there for us. After all this event doesn't make sense to have if the foot traffic it brings to these brick and mortar storefronts doesn't help the profitability of its sponsors. What is nice about FREE COMIC BOOK DAY is there is normally a selection of comic books that are interesting to all ages. There are some aimed for young readers, others targeted to middle grade ages, most are for teen audiences and even a few specifically for adults. Unfortunately, this year there won't be a Free Comic Book Day edition of The Tick. Doah! Other than that seems to be solid lineup of titles that will be available this summer.
My daughter's taken after her dad in becoming a comic book fan. She's been looking forward each month to picking up the newest issue of HOPE released by Source Point Press. The comic began a monthly distribution this summer after its first issue debuted on FREE COMIC BOOK DAY. It made for some nice reading time while school was out for summer break and she has enjoyed the story so much that I added HOPE to my pull list to buy for her at my favorite comic book shop.
The book's cover art and female heroine caught my daughter's attention while she was perusing the Free Comic Book Day selections back in May. Then she got really excited when we had a chance to meet the co-creator and artist for HOPE at our local comic shop. K. Lynn Smith illustrates and letters HOPE. We had her autograph a comic book and took a picture with the artist. My daughter was excited to see a woman playing a prominent role in the comic book industry which has also made reading HOPE special for her.
K. Lynn Smith told us when we met up with her that "HOPE is about a superhero who finds herself in a situation she can’t punch her way out." Smith pointed out this story "blurs the line between good and evil and takes a look at the human side of what happens to a super hero when their personal world falls apart around them." This comic book is full of social commentary using a super hero adventure as a way to delve into real issues impacting society today. Issues involving privacy, government authority and female equality are some of the topics woven into the story.
In the world of HOPE, people with super powers known as "Ultras" must identify themselves and enroll in a government registry. Their actions and whereabouts are strictly monitored and regulated. Seemingly average housewife Julie Lavelle has kept her super powers secret from the world, including her husband and daughter, even though she secretly been moonlighting as a costumed super hero using her abilities to help others. The public has begun to call her Hope while her real identity has remained a mystery. While she is beloved by the residents of her city, Lavelle has also caught the attention of the government which is concerned about an unregistered Ultra lurking about town.
When a family outing takes an unexpected turn, suddenly Julie Lavelle discovers how quickly life can change once the world knows she is Hope. She discovers that bad guys may not necessarily be her foes and who se thought was the good side may not be her friends. Life is already complicated before people know you are a super hero. Now family and friends may not see you the same way and there are people always trying to manipulate you for their own purposes. Plus doing good and being a hero may not be as cut and dry as it seems.
HOPE has become my daughter's comic book of choice to read because she has taking a liking to the artwork and appreciates the story is more focused on drama than fighting. Though she also does appreciate that there is some action with a female leading the storyline. While there are some mature themes, as a parent I appreciate that the book is age rated Teen so there isn't much more to being exposed to than would be seen in a PG-13 movie which we regularly let our tween see. Still just to be safe, I peruse through each of these comic books myself before letting my daughter read a new issue.

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY in 2019 will be taking place on Saturday, May 4. Publishers are printing up 50 selections to be distributed for free by participating comic shops this year. There is something for everyone in the family to enjoy with comics meant for young readers, teens as well as some content aimed specifically for adults being given away on FREE COMIC BOOK DAY.
May the Fourth is also unofficially STAR WARS DAY. May the Fourth be with You! So of course they have a STAR WARS comic book that you can get for free. This comic book is from the IDW Publishing's STAR WARS ADVENTURES comic book series which is written at a middle grade reading level to have age appropriate content for elementary school aged kids. While written for a pre-teen audience, these stories should be appealing to all ages in my opinion from flipping through pages of these comic books I've previously bought for my son and daughter.
In this FREE COMIC BOOK DAY Star Wars story, Han Solo and Chewbacca race against pirates in a search for one of three identical droids that contain the location of a legendary treasure. But what they don't know is two of the droids are booby trapped! Trickery and double-crosses abound in this original story set before events in the movie A New Hope!
FREE COMIC BOOK DAY is a morning that I've come to look forward to bonding together with my kids being excited about super heroes and science fiction. My children love the activity of perusing through the free comic book selections and picking out a few favorites to bring home with them. Then we spend a couple of hours reading through and chatting about everything we brought home with us. From spending time in line chatting with other comic fans to discovering new characters and stories in these books, we always have a super time participating in FREE COMIC BOOK DAY.

This year there are 50 comic books that can be selected from at participating locations. Note that each comic shop has its own rules for the event so in some circumstances you may only be allowed to take one or two books and in others it is first come, first serve and people can take one of each of them. Comic books are first come, first serve and based upon what quantities each participating comic book shop ordered for the day so you never know for sure what you'll actually be able to pick up; but that adds to the excitement of the day as well as you search through what is in stock.

One of the aspects I've appreciated about FREE COMIC BOOK DAY as a father is that they always offer a selection of comics that are appropriate for preschool and elementary school aged children to enjoy. Once again there will be a nice selection of comic books that are appropriate for ALL AGES to read. Here are a few of my favorites that will be available for children at this year's event:

My kids really enjoy the animated television series that follows the adventures of Ladybug and Cat Noir so they're sure to read this Miraculous comic book from Action Lab.
Papercutz is known for producing wonderful comic books and graphic novels meant for kids. They will be introducing a comic book based upon The Loud House, Nickelodeon's hit new animated show!
Time Shifters from Graphix Spotlight is a wacky adventure filled with dinosaurs, robots and trips to parallel dimensions of reality that will absolutely appeal to kids.
My daughter loves her DC Super Hero Girls toys and now they have a comic book! I know she's going to pick this one up during our visit to the comic shop.
My son is really into drawing right now so he's going to be thrilled to grab this COLORFUL MONSTERS sketchbook by cartoonist Elise Gravel filled with illustrations and activity pages.
Dynamite Comics has created a comic book series based upon National Geographic's Animal Jam online video game playground that has a whopping 55 million players worldwide.
My son said the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie is AWESOME so you know he's going to want to get his hand on this comic book from Marvel.
Boom! Studios always puts together a nice compilation that kids are sure to enjoy. A highlight of each year's FREE COMIC BOOK DAY is seeing the Mouse Guard piece that David Petersen includes in it every year.

I have a collection of FCBD THE TICK issues going back quite a few years. I wonder if this year's comic book will reference the new TV show that Amazon is producing? Rated: ALL AGES

The World's Greatest Cartoonists is meant exclusive for adults to read with a Mature rating. It contains all-new, exclusive work from a variety of comic artists that is a must-have for Fantagraphic fans.
The Incal from Humanoids has been called one of the most influential and original comics in sci-fi history. A full 30 pages originally published in Métal Hurlant and created by the artists' artist Mœbius will be available for free on May 6th.
