AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE TV SERIES COMING TO DISNEY+

I'm really GEEKED about this announcement as I'm a big fan of the horror stories published by Archie Comics! “Afterlife with Archie,” the bestselling comic book series from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) and Francesco Francavilla (“The Black Beetle”), has been greenlit for a TV series adaptation on Disney+, arriving just in time for Halloween 2027.

From Warner Bros. Television, Aguirre-Sacasa and Greg Berlanti (“You, The Flash,” “The Flight Attendant”) will serve as executive producers, bringing their signature blend of heart, humor, and high stakes to a story that turns the all-American town of Riverdale into a zombie-overrun apocalypse — where the only thing scarier than the undead is trying to survive your teenage years. When a supernatural spell from a certain teen witch backfires, unleashing an army of the possessed dead upon Riverdale, Archie and his friends must fight to stay alive, testing the friendships, romances, and loyalties.

DARKWATER VIDEO GAME

I normally don't write about PC gaming because my family mostly plays video games on Nintendo Switch, but there is one coming out from Playstack and Targon Studios that has me GEEKED! Darkwater is a cooperative extraction horror game for 1-4 players about a submarine trapped under the ice of an alien planet. It launches April 22nd on Steam.

Assemble an elite team of up to four submariners as you attempt to survive the icy depths of an alien planet. A mysterious disease has left the surface colonies ravaged and the government has frozen the ocean in response. Trapped below a sheet of thick ice you and your co-op crew must contend with all manner of adversity as you scavenge for precious fuel. Do what it takes to survive.

Engage in naval warfare with enemy submarines and tactically manage a variety of on-board systems as you attempt to gain the upper hand and sink your opponent. Upgrade and customize your submarine in real-time by adding new weapons, tools and rooms including:  

• A range of powerful torpedoes 
•  Harpoons 
•  Decoy mines 
•  Depth charges 
•  Sonar upgrades 

If your crew wants to survive, you’ll have to scavenge for all the fuel and credits you can carry. Dock your submarine to randomly generated deep-sea dungeons and face down what lurks below on foot. Infected divers lurk the halls of long-abandoned underwater hospitals waiting to strike, while alien creatures nest in forgotten factories. Each adversary responds to your presence in unique and unpredictable ways, so always keep your wits about you.

The combination of sci-fi and horror elements with a Fallout style aesthetic has piqued my interest. I also like that the cooperative play elements of the game where you need to work with other players instead of competing against them to beat the game. I just wish the game was on Switch! 

EC COMICS BLOOD TYPE

Corinna Bechko who wrote one of my all-time favorite comic book series, Image Comics sci-fi themed INVISIBLE REPUBLIC, is now scripting a new horror title for EC Comics being released this summer. Bechko is teaming up with Eisner Award-winning illustrator Andrea Sorrentino for BLOOD TYPE which digs deeper into a vampire first introduced within a previously published short story from an EC Comics anthology of horror tales.

Picking up in the immediate aftermath of Ada’s first appearance in the titular short story “Blood Type” from EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS #3, BLOOD TYPE is intended to be the first in a new slate of semi-regular EC Comics limited series that will spotlight and continue a select few of the razor-sharp short stories introduced in the pages of EC’s monthly anthology titles. ACCLAIMED HORROR/WESTERN GRAPHIC NOVEL "HIGH MOON" BEING REPUBLISHED BY PAPERCUTZ

Two of my favorite comic book artists, writer David Gallaher and artist Steve Ellis, are teaming up with one of my favorite publishers, PAPERCUTZ, to bring the acclaimed graphic novel series HIGH MOON back to print.  Originally published in 2007 by DC's Zuda Comics imprint, this story which combines cowboys and werewolves in an Old West adventure won a Harvey Award from its comic book industry peers.  Readers follow the investigations of a mysterious bounty hunter who has his own dark secret that emerges every full moon.  This gritty series does an excellent job of taking the elements of a horror flick and action movie so they play out on the pages of a comic book for an incredibly engaging read.

PAPERCUTZ which specializes in graphic novels that are interesting and enjoyable for children and teens to read will be publishing HIGH MOON through its Super Genius subsidiary which distributes titles that are a bit more artistic and edgier than those sold under the name of its parent company.   Super Genius will publish the first of the series three volumes, HIGH MOON: BULLET HOLES AND BITE MARKS, this October just in time for Halloween.  Volume 2 will be released in May of 2018 with a yet to be determined date for when the final edition will go on sale.  The artwork for volumes one and two will be remastered from the original graphic novels with the story concluding in volume three with all new material.  All three publications will feature new covers by co-creator Steve Ellis. The Super Genius editions will also be larger than the previous ones from Zuda Comics, but will maintain the landscape format of the original series.  The books will include a removable slipcase to allow them to be attractively displayed vertically on store shelves or on consumers' book shelves.

In HIGH MOON, former Pinkerton agent and current bounty-hunter Matthew Macgregor investigates a series of strange happenings in the small Texas town of Blest. Drought has brought famine and hardship to Blest. The summer heat pushes the temperature to unbearable heights during the day. The nights are even worse– for the streets are haunted by strange, unnatural creatures. And even as Macgregor works to uncover the truth about the creatures, he struggles to keep his own supernatural nature a secret.

“Between WESTWORLD, LOGAN, and RED DEAD REDEMPTION, the western is resonating in our culture in weird and unusual ways,” co-creator and writer David Gallaher noted in the announcement of Super Genius reprinting HIGH MOON. “HIGH MOON recalls the best tropes of both the classic western adventure and werewolf mythology. I can’t wait for readers to discover our bloody tale of werewoles six shootboys, bullets and the supernatural."

All three volumes of HIGH MOON will be published in hardcover at $24.99 and simultaneously in paperback at $14.99. Sci-Fi Movies & Shows You Can Find Only on COMET TV in December

What I'm most excited about though is that some of my all time favorite Sci Fi shows will be returning to television as COMET TV will soon be airing the Stargate series.  Stargate Atlantis will begin airing in December with Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Universe following in early 2017.  I'm so geeked these Stargate shows will be back on TV and any true fan will absolutely want to be tuning into COMET TV during the next few months.

New Vampire Horror Series will try to Thrill TV Viewers on FX Cable Network

THE STRAIN has gone full circle now.  Originally created as an outline for a television series pitch by filmmaker Guillermo del Toro when no networks picked it up for a pilot the idea was transformed into a trilogy of New York Times Best Seller books and a comic book series.  Now the cable network FX has picked up THE STRAIN for a 3 season run with the first episode airing on Sunday July 13th at 10pm ET/PT.

The first episode of the show starts with a plane landing at JFK airport than going dark and silent.  When it is boarded, all of the passengers are found dead and the Center for Disease Control is brought in to investigate as authorities fear this tragedy was caused by a viral outbreak on board the flight.  The CDC sends their top investigator Ephraim Goodweather (played by Corey Stoll - Congressman Peter Russo in the first season of Netflix's House of Cards drama) to find out what is going on.  Goodweather is stumped as it appears the cause of the trouble appears to originate from a mysterious giant coffin filled with soil and worms found in the plane's cargo hold.  The infection quickly jumps from the plane to the airport to New York City.  Turns out though it isn't a virus but rather a vampire infestation that is the cause of this plague.

Season one's 13 episodes of THE STRAIN will be based on the first novel and tells the story of the eight days in which the outbreak first surfaces and infects New York City.  The main characters are similar to the ones from the novels and comic books, the CDC expert, an elderly pawn shop owner who encountered the vampires as a child in World War II era Europe, and a pest exterminator who encounters this new vampire infestation while on the job.  The show throws in a computer hacker character not from the books and comics to slightly differentiate the show's scripts from the prose. These four characters team together to tackle the Master, one of seven ancient vampires, who is responsible for bringing the strain to New York City.  What is the Master's grand plan and how does a rich industrialist lurking in the shadows play into it?

Oh, one other note to mention!  These vampires aren't the ones of Buffy the Vampire, Dracula, True Blood, The Twilight Saga that look like normal humans who need to avoid the sun, rather they are more like the Reapers from the movie Blade II (directed by del Toro) that have three-way jaws with leach like suckers that shoot out of their faces and bodies that are grotesque.  Like The Walking Dead this is not a show you want to allow children to watch!
