HALF TRUTH GAME

review
How are you staying in touch with extended family during the coronavirus quarantine? We recently had a family game night over Zoom. We brought together my parents along with some siblings, uncles, aunts and cousins to spend an evening playing HALF TRUTH the new party trivia competition from game designer Richard Garfield (creator of Magic: The Gathering) and one of the Jeopardy game show's most successful contestants Ken Jennings. Thanks to Studio71 Games for sending this dad blogger HALF TRUTH to try out.

The game is called HALF TRUTH because players must answer questions from trivia cards that provide six answers. Three are correct and three are wrong. You place bets to see how many answers you provide are right. Can you get 1, 2 or 3 answers correct?

Betting you can get all 3 answers correct can earn a lot of points but also presents risks that can cost you the game if you don't guess right. Being too conservative though can let risk takers leapfrog over you to gain insurmountable leads. Plus the risks and rewards change for each question!

dad blogger

There are 500 trivia cards with categories ranging from " Stars who never won an Oscar " to " Star Wars characters who say they 'have a bad feeling about this'. " The questions aren't all about movies though. You might be asked to name super-hot peppers, identify colognes for men or identify weird things that appear on national flags.

The types of questions vary so that this is an all ages can play for a family game night. We played in teams and I had to rely on my kids when faced with the question  "Creatures in Harry Potter books."  My dad and uncle had an edge on some questions like "Top 10 Billboard Hits of 1972" … hey most of us playing including myself weren't even born yet! I redeemed myself though helping us ultimately get the win by being able to answer "Comic characters who ran for President." There really questions that appealed to all the generations of our family in this all ages party game.

This tabletop game has a nice layout making it easy to set up and have people see over video connections like Zoom. You just need to designate a game master to move tokens about the board, roll dice, and read trivia cards but it worked out fairly well playing remotely. Especially since the focus of the game is on answering trivia rather than doing tasks or moving pieces around a board. A game lasts about 30 minutes making it just the right time for a Zoom session.

half truth trivia game

HALF TRUTH is for 2 to 6 players or teams with a recommended age of 12+. We had a really great time playing it while having fun and connecting with family haven't been able to see in person for awhile. Though it will be fun to play it together sooner or later in the same room when the pandemic  doesn't prevent get togethers. Until then we're planning on a few more HALF TRUTH rematches via Zoom.

If you are looking for a game that is both entertaining and educational for some family fun, pick up HALF TRUTH for yourself. Based upon the good time we had, I give it a Geek Daddy nod of approval. It is available from a number of retailers or you can purchase it straight from Studio71 Games.

SHREK 15th Anniversary Giveaway

Wow! How time flies! Can you believe that SHREK is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its theatrical release?!  The 2001 movie which won the very first Oscar presented in the history of the Academy Awards for the category of Best Animated Feature has made the endearing ogre who stars in the motion picture a pop culture phenomenon ever since.  In honor of SHREK's 15th anniversary, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has re-released the movie for family's to add to their video libraries.  SHREK - ANNIVERSARY EDITION is now available to purchase via Digital HD and will be released on June 7, 2016 for DVD and Blu-ray.

Relive every moment of Shrek’s (Mike Myers) daring quest to rescue feisty Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), with the help of his lovable loudmouthed Donkey (Eddie Murphy), and win back the deed to his beloved swamp from scheming Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) with the home video re-release of the movie.  To celebrate this anniversary, A Geek Daddy has some fun movie facts to share, is giving away SHREK - ANNIVERSARY EDITION on DVD,  plus is providing a fun printable party kit that will help you have some family fun for a movie night.

FUN FACTS ABOUT SHREK
  • The movie is based upon a children's picture book by William Steig published in 1990. Steig was a long-time cartoonist for The New Yorker and had been referred to as "The King of Cartoons" by Newsweek.
  • William Steig also wrote a book titled "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble" where a donkey has a magic pebble and scared of a lion wishes to become a boulder to protect himself from the giant feline.  Donkey's saying "I like that boulder, that is a nice boulder" in SHREK is meant as a reference to "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble" and a tribute to Steig.
  • Cameron Diaz burped while recording lines after drinking a Coca-Cola and writers added the scene where Princess Fiona burps based upon that incident.
  • Donkey was based upon a real miniature donkey named Pericles that was kept at a park near Dreamwork's offices.
  • The song "I'm a Believe" which has become an anthem for the movie was chosen for the line in the song "I thought love was only true in fairy tales."
  •  None of the actors voicing the movie's characters interacted with each other during the film's production.  They each recorded their lines separately with a reader from the production crew feeding them the other characters lines.
  • Shrek showering in mud was the hardest part of the movie to animate so the animators took mud showers themselves to observe how to realistically show the scene in the film.
  • When Shrek's swamp is invaded at the beginning of the movie more than 1,000 fantasy characters are featured within the scene.
  • The storyboard artists responsible for The Gingerbread Man, Magic Mirror and Pinocchio voiced those characters.
  • Shrek, the character, was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

I "SPY" A SECRET AGENT SPOOF FEATURING MELISSA MCCARTHY COMING OUT ON BLU-RAY & DVD

What do you get when a desk-bound CIA analyst volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer in an attempt to prevent a diabolical global disaster?  A hilarious spoof on secret agent movies starring Melissa McCarthy in the blockbuster hit SPY which film critic Leonard Maltin referred to as "her funniest movie yet."  Jason Statham, Jude Law and Rose Byrne join McCarthy in delivering hysterical performances in SPY which earned more than $100 million  during its theatrical run in the United States and a 95% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.com. In anticipation of the movie's release on Blu-ray and DVD on September 29, 2015, A Geek Daddy is sharing a few fun facts about Hollywood's newest Queen of Comedy, Melissa McCarthy, and giving away a SPY Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

Did you know Melissa is a Saluki?  She studied fashion at Southern Illinois University (who are know as the Salukis from their school mascot).  In fact she originally made her way to New York to be a fashion designer but after a fateful night at an open mic night decided to take a shot at being a stand-up comedian instead.  Melissa s still very talented when it comes to fashion though and designed her own gown that the actress/comedian wore to the 2011 Emmys where she won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

While Melissa McCarthy may be best know for her breakout role in the 2011 comedy hit Bridesmaids where she received an Academy Award nomination for her part in the film, she had already been acting for more than a decade at that point having a primary supporting role in the television series Gilmore Girls from 2000-2007 and Samantha Who? from 2007-2009.  She currently stars in the CBS prime time sitcom Mike & Molly where she earned her an Emmy in 2011 for the role of Molly Flynn.  One of my wife's all time favorite TV shows is Gilmore Girls.  For a lot of years she watched reruns of Gilmore Girls every afternoon when returning home from work and we had to make time to watch every new episode whenever they aired.  So for our family Melissa McCarthy will always be Sookie from the Gilmore Girls.

Speaking of her big role in Bridesmaids - other than playing one in the movie, Melissa has been a bridesmaid in real life once - at her sister's wedding.

Melissa has a really sharp memory.  When she has hosted Saturday Night Live she hasn't used cue cards.  Melissa has memorized EVERYTHING for these "live" SNL performances.  Wow! That's impressive!  In fact, she's earned 2 Emmy nominations for hosting SNL (2012 / 2013).

What is the most embarrassing thing that happened to you as a kid?  For Melissa who grew up in the rural farming community of Plainsfield, Illinois it was climbing up into a neighbor's silo and not being able to get back down.  She had to be rescued by a friendly farmer who climbed up, got her unstuck and brought her down to earth.

Since Bridesmaids, Melissa has had roles in the films Spy, The Nines, The Back-up Plan, Life As We Know It, Identity Thief, The Heat, and The Hangover Part III.  She will be starring in the upcoming Ghost Busters remake that is scheduled to be released in theaters across the USA on July 15, 2016.  Ghost Busters is being directed by Paul Feig who also directed McCarthy in the movies SPY, The Heat and Bridesmaids.

Thanks to our friends at Fox Home Entertainment, one lucky A GEEK DADDY blog reader will win a free Blu-rayDVD combo pack of SPY.  Must be a U.S. or Canadian resident over 18 years old and submit one or all of the following entry methods to earn up to 3 entries prior to 11:59 pm EST on Sunday September 27, 2015:

E-mail thegeekdaddy [at] yahoo [dot] com your name and mailing address plus tell us your favorite Melissa McCarthy role. Email subject line should be SPY (1 ENTRY)

Visit our Facebook page and on the contest post leave a comment telling us about your funniest moment  at work or school where you were caught out of your comfort zone like McCarthy is in the movie SPY (2 ENTRIES)

All valid entries will be assigned a number in the order they are received and one number will be  selected to determine the winner using random.org.  E-mails will only be used to contact the winner and deleted following the selection of a winner.

McCarthy is armed and hilarious in this comedy from director Paul Feig. Deskbound CIA analyst Susan Cooper is about to become the world’s newest — and unlikeliest — secret weapon. When her partner (Jude Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, Susan volunteers to go deep undercover and bring down a deadly arms dealer. Loaded with wise-cracking action and adventure, SPY is a mission impossible to resist!

Of course the Blu-ray and DVD come loaded with a bunch of bonus features in addition to the movies:

5 Interesting Facts About Strawberry Shortcake

I am a member of the Fox Home Entertainment Insiders blogger program and receive complimentary products for reviews and giveaways.

In recognition of our friends at Fox Home Entertainment releasing a new DVD of Strawberry Shortcake tales, I'm sharing some interesting trivia about the adorable red headed girl and her berry best friends plus a fun coloring page for A Geek Daddy blog readers to enjoy.  Here are five interesting facts that you might not know about Strawberry Shortcake:

  1. Strawberry Shortcake and her cat, Custard, were designed by greeting card illustrator Muriel Fahrion in 1977 and were part of  a popular line of greeting cards for American Greetings' Juvenile & Humorous card department featuring the characters.
  2. Strawberry Shortcake toys appeared in 1979 when American Greetings licensed the rights to Kenner Toys who at that time also had the rights to another brand that was growing in popularity called Star Wars.  Kenner produced Strawberry Shortcake dolls that had hair that smelled like each character in the toy line,s fruit themed name until 1985, which also happens to be the same year that the toy manufacturer discontinued production of its line of Star Wars toys.
  3. Strawberry Shortcake starred in an animated feature film called The Sweet Dreams Movie that was released on October 7, 2006 and played in select theaters across the United States.  Fox Home Entertainment released the movie on DVD in 2007.
  4. From 1980 through 1985, back in the days when there were only a handful of stations you could watch on TV, Strawberry Shortcake and her gang of friends were featured in an annual television special.  Plum Puddin who is one of the main characters in the current run of Strawberry Shortcake animated programming including the newly released DVD Berry Tales was first introduced in the very first TV special as a boy.  The character then wasn't seen again in the television specials, toy line or any other licensed products until "he" was reintroduced as a "she" in 1984 with the introduction of a Plum Puddin  doll by Kenner and inclusion in that year's annual television special.
  5. American Greetings sold the ownership rights to Strawberry Shortcake in February of this year to Iconix Brand Group for $105 million dollars.   Iconix purchases ownership of iconic brands then manages their licensing to manufacturers, retailers, and television, movie and video game producers.  Some well known brands also owned by Iconix include Joe Boxer, London Fog, Ocean Pacific, The Sharper Image, Starter, and Umbro.  In 2010, Iconix partnered with the Charles M. Schulz family to acquire all the assets related to the Peanuts comic strip from its longtime owner United Media creating a new company to manage this brand called Peanuts Worldwide which is 80% owned by Iconix and 20% owned by Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates.  A 3D animated Peanuts Movie is being released at theaters across the USA on November 6, 2015.
On August 11, 2015, Fox Home Entertainment released on DVD some brand new animated adventures that provide a strawberry twist to some berry well know fairy tales.  Strawberry Shortcake: Berry Tales features some of my daughter's favorite bed time stories and if you have a little princess at home this is sure to delight her.  I'm sure little boys at home would enjoy it too.  This 71 minute long DVD is rated G and features three stories.featuring Strawberry Shortcake and her cast of friends. Please download and print out this fun Strawberry Shortcake coloring page from the DVD to enjoy:

In Strawberry Shortcake: Berry Tales, Plum Puddin learns to believe in herself when putting on a small and simple play for a young audience during the tale of "Snowberry and the Seven Berrykins".  The next tale is "Berryella and Prince Berry Charming" which focuses on guy friend Huck agreeing to act in a production of this berry tale then quickly realizing that he'd be happier working behind the scenes.  Finally in "The Littlest Berrykin" Strawberry, Lemon, and Raspberry star as three princesses on a quest to rule a kingdom that realize during their adventure that they can never succeed without kindness and generosity.

World Elephant Day - Help National Geographic Save Animals in the Wild

** I am part of the National Geographic Kids Insiders program.  A Geek Daddy received special perks as part of my affiliation with this group but no financial compensation **

My daughter has really become intrigued by elephants since she started reading the National Geographic Kids book MISSION: ELEPHANT RESCUE.  This 107 page book is full of color photographs providing up close views of elephants and their habitat.  It provides lots of interesting facts about elephants, stories about the plight of elephant populations being depleted and facing extinction due to poaching and habitat loss, and how people, even kids, can make a difference in helping save wild elephants.

After reading through MISSION: ELEPHANT RESCUE, my daughter asked if we could go somewhere to see one up close.  So we ventured over to the elephant habitat at the Toledo Zoo.  My daughter was thrilled to see real life elephants during our visit to the zoo but also told me she was a little sad.  I asked her why and she told me that it really would be a shame if the only places elephants lived were in circuses and zoo so that none of them lived on their own in the wild anymore.

Unfortunately, the world's largest land animal is threatened with a very small area of remaining habitat and shrinking herd populations making it harder and harder for them to remain vibrant in the wild. As our family's contribution to helping preserve wild elephant herds and habitat on this World Elephant Day ( August 12 ) we are helping promote the book that inspired my daughter's interest in learning more about elephants National Geographic Kids MISSION: ELEPHANT RESCUE.  Proceeds from the sale of this book go directly toward funding the non-profit National Geographic Society's efforts to support endangered animals and their habitats.  National Geographic also works to educate people so they can understand how to be advocates and take action to help preserve our planet's wild animals and places through publications such as MISSION: ELEPHANT RESCUE.

In recognition of World Elephant Day, here are also some interesting facts highlighting how incredible of creatures these pachyderms are:
  • There are two main species of elephants: the Asian Elephant and the African Elephant.  The African elephant is the larger of the two and both the males and females of this species have tusks.  Unfortunately poachers hunting elephants for the ivory their tusks are made of is one of the greatest threats to elephant populations.  Some African countries are removing the tusks from wild elephants to try and protect them from poachers.
  • Elephants don't like peanuts.  They don't eat them in the wild and zoos don't feed them to the animals in captivity.  My daughter was excited to learn this because due to a severe food allergy she doesn't eat peanuts either.  Prior to learning this she had been a little disappointed that one of her favorite animals appetite was for a food she couldn't be around.
  • Elephants are the largest land mammals on our planet and that is reflected in how they eat.  Elephants can eat as much as 300 pounds of food and spend up to 16 hours eating per day.
  • Despite their size elephants love to swim and can use their trunk as a snorkel when swimming in deep water.
  • An elephant's trunk contains more than 40,000 muscles which are more than there are in the whole human body.   A trunk is very dexterous with the ability to grasp and pick up something as small as a single grain of rice or blade of grass.  It is also strong enough to tear down a tree.
  • Just like you and I, elephants can get sunburned so they throw sand on their heads and back to protect themselves.  They also do this to keep bugs off of them.
  • Elephants will avoid bees and ants because they don't want them getting into their trunks which are lined with sensitive nerve endings.  Farmers in Kenya have begun to line the fields they plant their crops in with bee hives to ward off elephants.  In addition to protecting their farmland, the honey from these hives provide the farmers with extra income.
  • The elephant's closest living genetic relative is a small furry badger like animal called a Rock Hyrax that lives in rocky landscapes across the African sub-Saharan region and along the coast of the Arabian peninsula.
  • Female elephants have the longest pregnancy of any mammal at 22 months.  Newborn elephants can weigh up to 260 pounds, a comparable weight to that of an adult man.

Ant Man Fun Facts & Kids Activity / Coloring Sheets

Ant Man may have been a founding member of the Avengers in the comic book world but in Marvel's cinematic movie universe this small character made his first appearance on the big screen with the recent theatrical release of his own feature film.  Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant Man suit.  Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. This high stakes, tension filled adventure which stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Darren Cross began playing in theaters in the United States on Friday, August 17, 2015. The 117 minute long action/adventure movie directed by Peyton Reed is rated PG-13.

Courtesy of our friends at Marvel Studios, A Geek Daddy has some fun facts about the movie and children's activity/coloring sheets to share with our readers:
  • If you ever wondered how the Ant Man suit works, here's the answer. The suit encapsulates the Pym Particle technology that allows a person to shrink down to the size of an ant.  When the wearer wants to change size, he uses a button on the suit that regulates the Pym Particles, which run through the suit and helmet like an intricate system of veins.  The particles are volatile and change the distance between atoms, so the suit and helmet serve as protection for the wearer.   Although Ant Man does not technically have super powers, when he shrinks down in the suit, he actually exceeds the strength of a normal person because energy and mass compacted create a more powerful force.

  • The Ant Man helmet has 54 different pieces to it as well as 10 LED lights. Ant Man's suit contains over 159 LED lights, which are controlled remotely.  All the circuitry and batteries for the lights are in a very small backpack which allows the whole suit to light up, including the gloves and belt.
  • Marvel did a lot of research into ant behaviors and what the different species of ants could bring to the movie in terms of what filmmakers needed for the heist.  For instance, the Paraponera clavata or bullet ants have a very painful sting and resemble dinosaurs in the movie; the Solenopsis or fire ants are like architects as they can link together and form bridges and rafts to help Ant Man; and the male Camponotus carpenter ants can fly, providing Ant Man with a helpful mode of transportation.
  • Marvel's Ant Man is set in San Francisco, California and many exterior shots were done there, including shots of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Tenderloin District, and the exterior of a Victorian home used to portray Hank Pym's house.  Following filming in San Fransisco, production took place at Pinewood Studios' newly built facilities in Atlanta, Georgia which Ant Man was the first movie to be filmed at.
  • For the younger Hank Pym flashback scenes, Michael Douglas came up with a wig that he still had for a film he was going to do about President Reagan and it worked perfectly for Marvel's Ant Man.
  • When you watch Marvel's Ant Man look closely at some of the set dressing for Hank Pym's house.  You'll see a little chair or a tiny weapon or other miniature everyday items.  There are items placed all around the house that hint at the adventures Pym had when he was Ant Man and suggest the experiments that he made shrinking inorganic objects before he made the breakthrough to shrinking organic objects.
  • For the scaled down Ant Man sequences, the filmmakers used a combination of motion picture macro photography, still macro photography, motion capture with actors, motion capture with stunt people, and for every set they built a miniature version called a macro set.  Macro photography is extreme close up photography that produces photographs of small items larger than life-size.

  • In the spirit of shooting everything in miniature, the macro photography team built a mini clapperboard, the device filmmakers use to help synchronize picture and sound.  Originally made of wood and handwritten on with chalk, clapperboards now have digital features, but the one for the macro sets was of the old fashioned variety.
  • In the film, Scott Lang has a best friend Luis who owns an old brown van that has seen better days.  The van keeps changing its appearance through the course of the movie and the different versions were dubbed the Mark 1, the Mark 2, the Mark 3, in a tongue in cheek reference to the Iron Man suits.  The Mark 1 is the old brown van that Luis is really proud of but in reality is a "beater".  The Mark 2 is accessorized for a job by the thieves and boasts things like bigger mirrors so they can see who is coming and going and side boards for fast ins and outs.  The Mark 3 is geared up for the Pym Tech heist and is painted and accessorized to look like a Water & Power utility vehicle.
  • Growing up, director Peyton Reed was an ardent Marvel fan boy.  When he was in high school, Reed made a pencil drawing of the punk band he was in, in which he depicted the band as a recreation of "The Avengers #1" cover where each of the band members was a different Avenger.  Perhaps in a flash of precognition, Reed drew himself as Ant Man.

Fun Facts About The Animated Movie HOME & Kids Activity Sheets

I am a member of the Fox Home Entertainment Insiders blogger program and receive complimentary products for reviews and giveaways.

The animated feature film HOME is now available to purchase via Digital Download and will be released July 28, 2015 on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD.  In DreamWorks Animation's HOME, Oh, a loveable misfit from another planet meets a girl named Tip.  The two unlikely friends embark on a great journey...the journey HOME. Directed by Tim Johnson (Over The Hedge, Antz), HOME features the voice talents of Golden Globe® and Emmy® winner Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory, The Muppets), Grammy® winner Rihanna (Battleship), Oscar® and Emmy® winner Steve Martin (The Pink Panther, Father of the Bride) and Golden Globe® nominee Jennifer Lopez (American Idol, Maid In Manhattan).   The movie also features a soundtrack with musical performances by Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez.

Here are 6 fun facts to keep in mind and look for while enjoying this film:

  • HOME is based upon the book "The True Meaning of Smekday" by Adam Rex.  You can see the characters Tip and Oh reading the book in the end credits. In the book "The True Meaning of Smekday" Oh's name is actually J.Lo which was changed for the movie maybe because Jennifer Lopez, whose nickname is also J.Lo , voice's Tip's mother in the movie and performs the title track "Feel the Light."
  • "Feel the Light" opens with the familiar chords used to communicate with aliens in the 1977 movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
  • In the convenience store scene if you look closely you'll see a box of cheesy dibbles the snacks loved by the Penguins of Madagascar.
  • The Boov eat metal and other everyday objects humans wouldn't consider as food.  During the final party scene one of the Boov has a drink with a screwdriver in it ... get it a screwdriver a pun on the cocktail made from vodka and orange juice.
  • The Boov can change colors based upon their emotions but their primary color is purple.  Not all Boov are the same shade of purple though.  There are seven shades of the "normal" Boov skin tone shown in the movie which is a nod to "The True Meaning of Smekday."  In Adam Rex's book there are seven different genders making up the alien Boov race.
  • The headlights and grill on the flying car, Slushious, that Tip and Oh use on their journey change color to mimic joy, fear, sadness, and terror.

As a Fox Home Entertainment Insider, A Geek Daddy Blog has been provided with some fun kids activity sheets and bookmarks based upon the movie HOME to share with our readers. We hope you have some fun with these!
