CHAMPIONS

A Geek Daddy was provided movie codes by Universal Pictures for promotional consideration.
Opinions expressed are honest and my own.

champions movie 2023

Comedic filmmaker Bobby Farrelly (Something About Mary / Me, Myself & Irene) adds a new twist to the tried and true drama scenario of a team of outcasts being led to success by a coach seeking redemption in his movie CHAMPIONS. In this film, Farrelly casts Woody Harrelson as a troubled coach who needs to get his personal life in order and real life developmentally disabled individuals who make up the friends on a basketball team that dreams of making it to the Special Olympics championship game. CHAMPIONS is a flick that hopes to score points in advocating for those with disabilities through humor and heart-warming moments that will have audiences embrace the teammates on this basketball team of friends.

Does Farrelly's CHAMPIONS win audiences over? Critics on Rotten Tomatoes reviewed the movie as "rotten" with a 59% approval rating; BUT audiences scored CHAMPIONS with a "fresh" 95% approval rating. My problem with most critics these days is they fall into one of two categories: (1) someone looking to kiss ass to movie studios to gain access and perks and gives glowing reviews of everything or (2) someone who gives every movie a bad review to show the world they are truly independent of Hollywood marketing departments. So, that is why I give the Tomatometer scores on rottentomatoes.com from audiences much more credibility than what the so-called critics think.

My personal rating of movies is pretty simple, did I have a good time sitting through the movie? If, YES, it was an entertaining experience then the flick earns a Geek Daddy nod of approval.  Feeling as if I just lost hours out of my life that can't get back or falling asleep in the middle of the show won't get a movie any hype from me. In this case, CHAMPIONS is a winner!

When a troubled basketball coach is ordered by a Judge to manage a team of players with intellectual disabilities or go to jail the choice is obvious. He soon realizes that despite his doubts, together, this team can go further than they ever imagined. CHAMPIONS is based on the true story of a basketball team from Valencia, Spain. It is rated PG 13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for Strong Language + Crude & Sexual References.

CHAMPIONS is available now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital. Check it out for a fun family movie night.

A Geek Daddy Thanksgiving Giveaway: Win a FREE BIRDS Movie Prize Pack

When I first saw the trailers for the movie Free Birds I rolled my eyes and thought this Turkey-based Thanksgiving gimmick of a movie wasn't going to be very good.  After watching the movie my impression changed as I found it to be a humorous and fun family friendly adventure movie that is great addition to a Thanksgiving weekend's activities.  The adventures of two turkeys who use a secret government time machine to travel back to 1621 in an attempt to sway the Pilgrims to enjoy pizza at the first Thanksgiving dinner thus saving generations of turkeys from a fate of being placed on the dinner table as the main course every fourth Thursday in November.  This animated movie should join A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and Planes, Trains &  Automobiles as must see viewing during this holiday.

You can find Free Birds to bring home to watch by shopping at Walmart for its exclusive DVD / plush toy combo that has just been released for the holidays this year.  As a Thanksgiving Treat for our A GEEK DADDY blog readers, we are also giving away a Free Birds DVD / Plush Toy Prize Pack to one lucky individual.  For a chance to win this  movie prize pack you must be a US or Canadian resident over 18 years old and submit one or all of the following entry methods to earn up to 3 entries prior to 11:59 pm EST on Sunday November 30, 2014:
