Heading Back To School With Whiffer Sniffers

** A Geek Daddy received the featured product for free to review**

Getting ready to head back to school my daughter made sure I knew that she needed some flair to add to her backpack.  She wanted to make sure she was looking cool when returning to school.  All the kids at her school now decorate their bags with pins, key chains, and clip on plush toys and of course she didn't want to be left out.  So we let my daughter brighten up her backpack with some Whiffer Sniffers.

These fun plush caricatures of food aren't just amusing to look at but also are great to sniff as they are slightly scented to smell like the things being portrayed.  Willy B. Chilly the snowcone has a mixed fruit scent while Ben Sizzlin smells like BACON!!!  Other themes include coconut, french toast and watermelon.  The scents on these clips last for about a year but they are designed to only be noticeable up close so as not to be prominent or overpowering when carried around.  To check out the full variety of Whiffer Sniffer clip on plush available, visit WhifferSniffers.com.

You can purchase Whiffer Sniffers individually either in clear sealed tube that identifies the character or by getting a mystery pack where you can get a randomly selected plush which you won't know what you have until the package is open.  In addition to the fun of being surprised some of the Whiffer Sniffers such as apple pie, french toast, and popsicle are only available by finding them in a mystery pack.

The whimsical designs and variety of smells incorporated into these plush backpack clips have delighted my kids.  Whiffer Sniffers release new product in waves and retires some of the older versions after awhile so you should be on the lookout and pick up the ones you are really interested in.  If you are looking for something unique to help a child personalize his or her school backpack check out Whiffer Sniffers.

Back to School Crayola Products - Crayons, Markers & Colored Pencils

** A Geek Daddy received the featured products for free to review **

It's the beginning of Second Grade for my twins beginning on September 6th.  Thanks to a complimentary box of crayons, markers, and colored pencils, Crayola sent our way my kids will be well stocked for returning to school.  Getting a brand new box of Crayola crayons was always a fun part of returning to classes after summer break for all the neighborhood kids when I was in elementary school.  If you were lucky your parents would get you the monstrous 64 crayon super box with a built in sharpener in the package.  Buying Crayola products when it comes to back to school shopping is still a family tradition but for my kids they now have many more tremendous products to choose from then when I was their age.

One of the modern updates to Crayola products that I really appreciate as a parent is their line of Ultra-Clean Washable markers and crayons.  These non-toxic crayons and markers are specially formulated to wash clean from skin, clothing, and even painted walls.  Featured in classic colors as well as in a variety of other fun shades kids can engage in self-expression without parents or teachers worrying about having to cleanup a mess.  Today's children can create more vibrant art work then when I was a kid with Color Max products which provide the brightest, truest colors that Crayola has ever offered.  Look for Crayola's Ultra-Clean and Color Max labels when doing back to school shopping.

In many class rooms, traditional black chalk boards have been replaced with more modern white dry erase boards.  Crayola offers a variety of dry erase crayons ranging from traditional shades to cool neon colors.

What kid wouldn't enjoy creating school projects and personal works of art with markers infused with tasty and funny scents such as Buttered Popcorn and Barn Yard.  Each scented marker in the Washable Doodle Scents pack is also decorated with fun character illustrations inspired by its smell.  My daughter just adores these Doodle Scents markers!

My son really enjoys using colored pencils in the drawings and illustrations he creates.  Crayola's Twistables and Erasable colored pencils have worked out really well for him.  I hadn't thought about it until he started using Crayola Erasable colored pencils but most brands really aren't very erasable.  With these easy-to-erase pencils from Crayola, kids can easily make changes or fix mistakes without worrying about having to start over again.  Twistables allow users to avoid having to sharpen or peel a traditional wood colored pencil. The clear plastic shell shows how much color is left and protects a pencil from breaking while it's being used.

Unique Finds & Money Saving Deals Can Be Found Back-to-School Clothes Shopping @ The Salvation Army's Thrift Stores

50% off Labor Day clothing sale

Second hand clothing stores became popular during the Great Recession years when everyone was trying to save money where ever and how ever they could and the shops have stayed trendy as the economy has improved as a source of unique finds that let people have a more personal touch in selecting their clothing style.  Of course every tween and teen wants to be trendy and have their own unique style so stopping by a thrift store like those run by The Salvation Army with them can be a fun search for great finds and a chance to save some money on back-to-school shopping.  As an extra bonus all of Metro Detroit's 34 Salvation Army Thrift Store locations will be open on Labor Day ( Monday, September 7, 2015 ) and have their clothes discounted an additional 50% off for that one day only.

It's honestly been a few years since I stopped by one of these thrift stores. So when I heard about this special Labor Day promotion, I stopped by to check out what they had to offer for back-to-school shopping.  From the location I visited if you want to pick up some clothes for grade school children at bargain prices you'd be better off heading to a Mom-to-Mom sale or resale shop that specializes in children's clothing; but if you have a tween or teen heading to junior high, high school or college there were plenty of pants, shirts, skirts, dresses and shoes for guys and gals to pick out to suit their own individual styles.  Keep in mind too that I only went to one location out of The Salvation Army's 34 local thrift stores so there may be other sites where they divert more of the children's wear to and of course since they are selling donated items not every location will have exactly the same items to choose from.

All of the donations  to The Salvation Army that stock the store had been sorted through by staff and volunteers so that  only the best of the best made it to the store shelves.  Everything was clean and in great shape with no stains, rips or tears.  Items ranged a whole gambit of styles from conservative Polo branded shirts to some slinky skirts.  There were lots of items that would be considered "vintage" and others that wouldn't stand out in a crowd but would be a bargain to help fill out a wardrobe for the school year.  A visit to a Salvation Army Thrift Store will help a tween or teen with developing their identity by searching for and picking out clothing items that fit their sense of style and make them feel unique.  It will also help people in need as proceeds from these sales fund The Salvation Army's Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Centers.

These adult rehabilitation centers provide a free 180 day residential treatment program for men and women who are trying to overcome addiction.  The Salvation Army as a religious institution uses a Christian-based program meant not only to deal with a person's addiction but also help them improve the overall state of their body, mind and spirit through individual and group counseling, chemical dependency education, relapse prevention education, bible study, G.E.D. courses, career counseling, and continued follow-up contact after the successful completion of the program.  Proceeds from all of the Metro Detroit Salvation Army Thrift Stores support the continuation of this program so that it can be adequately funded and continue to be provided at no cost to those in need.  The Adult Rehabilitation Centers are completely self-funded and receive their entire operating budget from the revenue generated from these thrift store locations.

Visit any of the 34 Metro Detroit Salvation Army thrift store location to enjoy 50 percent off clothing on Monday, September 7.  Door open at its 32 "Thrift Store" locations from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and its 2 "Dollar Store" locations in Pontiac and Detroit will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.  For more information visit SalArmyThrift.com or call 313-965-7760.

Founded by William Booth in London, England in 1865, The Salvation Army is a faith-based, non-profit organization dedicated to serving people in need without discrimination.  The Adult Rehabilitation Centers are an integral part of The Salvation Army's mission by offering substance abusing adults the opportunity to rebuild their lives through a voluntary, short-term residential self-help program designed to establish a sense of dignity, self-esteem and personal strength that will allow them to resist the desire to abuse a substance and regain their rightful place as a contributing member of society.  In 2014, 174 men and 49 women successfully completed the 180 day program.

Daniel Tiger Goes To School

Disclosure: I received a complimentary product from PBS Kids.  A Geek Daddy did not receive any financial compensation for this post.

Do you have children at home who may be getting ready to head to preschool, kindergarten or first grade as the summer wraps up.  If so your family will probably appreciate the new DVD being released by PBS KIDS on August 18, 2015 DANIEL GOES TO SCHOOL featuring stories from the popular The Fred Rogers Company's animated television series DANIEL TIGER'S NEIGHBORHOOD.  This series centers around 5 year old Daniel Tiger, who is the son of the original Daniel Striped Tiger from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.  These shows also feature the children of other characters from Fred Rogers' Neighborhood of Make-Believe including Prince Wednesday (the son of King Friday and Queen Saturday), Katerina Kittycat (daughter of Henrietta Pussycat), O the Owl (nephew of X the Owl), and Miss Elaina (daughter of Lady Elaine Fairchild and Music Man Stan).  The stories in Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood involve topics that young children and their parents often encounter such as dealing with a new sibling, overcoming picky eating, and going to school.

With this new DVD, DANIEL GOES TO SCHOOL, youngsters can join Daniel Tiger and his friends as they head to school, where they discover that learning and using your imagination is grr-ific fun! It includes 8 fun-filled tales that will get kids excited about school and learning.  Some of the important lessons kids will learn from the adventures on DANIEL GOES TO SCHOOL include: everyone’s job is important and we all help in different ways, and, if you’re not successful at first, keep trying, and you’ll get better!  The DVD has a run time of approximately 100 minutes. The DANIEL GOES TO SCHOOL DVD has a run time of approximately 100 minutes and is best suited for children 3 to 6 years old includes the following stories:

“A Trip to the Crayon Factory”
Daniel Tiger, Miss Elaina, and Katerina Kittycat take a fun trip to the factory to see how crayons are made but, O the Owl can’t come because he’s sick. At the factory, the kids watch the crayons being made, and Daniel looks and listens closely. Daniel has an idea to take pictures at the factory and give them to O at the end of the day, so that O can learn about crayons too!

“Be a Vegetable Taster!”
Teacher Harriet introduces Daniel and his friends to the school’s vegetable garden and convinces them to pick out some healthy veggies for their snack. They explore the garden, picking and trying different vegetables…with mixed results!

“Line Leader Daniel”
The children are getting new classroom jobs at school. Daniel really wants to be line leader! When he doesn’t get the job he wanted, Daniel is disappointed. Soon he learns that all of the jobs are necessary to keep the classroom running smoothly.

“Problem Solver Daniel”
Daniel and Miss Elaina are playing with the blocks at school but they each want to build something different. They call Teacher Harriet over to help fix the problem, but she tells them to work out a solution without her. They do, and feel proud that they can figure things out all by themselves.

“The Class Votes”
At school, Daniel and his classmates get to choose their new class pet! Teacher Harriet explains that they can either get a bunny or a turtle. The kids learn what it means to “vote” and that sometimes it doesn’t always turn out your way. Luckily, ALL of the kids find something to love about their new pet, “Snowball”!

“O Builds a Tower”
In the block corner at school, O the Owl is determined to use all of the blocks to build the tallest tower in the world. After many failed attempts, he is frustrated, but Teacher Harriet and O’s friends encourage him to try once again.

“Play Pretend”
Teacher Harriet shows the children a big cardboard box and asks them what they think it could be. Daniel and Miss Elaina have fun pretending the box is a space ship and a jungle boat, but O the Owl just sees a big cardboard box. With a little help from his friends, O discovers how much fun it is to pretend!

“Safety Patrol”
Today at school, the children are learning about traffic signs. Prince Tuesday comes for a special visit, wearing his crossing guard uniform. He takes the class on a walk through the Neighborhood and they practice their safety rules all along the way.

CLICK HERE for more information about ordering DANIEL GOES TO SCHOOL from PBS.  They are also offering a 15% off back-to-school discount on all PBS Kids DVDs until August 31, 2015 so now is a good time to peruse their catalog of kids oriented shows.  Also check out the two other The Fred Rogers Company shows, Peg + Cat and Odd Squad which are also some of our family's favorite shows on TV.  All three series produced from the Fred Rogers Company, Daniel Tiger, Peg + Cat and Odd Squad recently won Parents Choice Gold Awards.

Caillou Goes Back to School DVD & Bonus Book from PBS Kids

Disclosure: I received a complimentary product from PBS Kids.  A Geek Daddy did not receive any financial compensation for this post.

My kids loved watching Caillou on PBS when they were in preschool.  This cartoon series features a four-year-old named Caillou (pronounced KY-YOO) who shares in a relatable way to preschoolers  life lessons he learns through his experiences on the show.  How to get along with his little sister, deal with being sick, learn to play sports, and getting ready to begin preschool are just a few of the topics Caillou explores with the help of his friends, parents, sister Rosie, and grandma.

Wow has the summer flown by and with it already being early August the school year is just a flip of a calendar page away.  If you have preschoolers or Kindergarteners who may be antsy about starting school, PBS Kids has released a Caillou DVD/Book Bundle that can help parents start a discussion about going to school with their little ones and provide children with some fun motivation to look forward to beginning a new experience in the fall.

You can purchase the "Caillou Goes Back to School" DVD/Book combo on the PBS website for $12.99 plus shipping and handling.  Between now and August 31, 2015 is also having a 15% off sale on all PBS Kids DVDs so if you order this combo pack in the next few weeks you can get it for a little less than the $12.99 listed price.  This bundle features two items – the DVD “Caillou Goes Back to School,” which includes 12 stories, and an illustrated bonus book about riding the school bus.  In addition to the episodes from the animated series, the DVD also features a video game that kids can play on a PC and some downloadable printable coloring pages featuring the characters from Caillou.

The DVD run time is approximately 100 minutes and includes the following stories:

“Caillou the Librarian”
Caillou is excited about showing Rosie the ropes when they visit the library. During storytime Caillou imagines he’s in the story, riding on a dolphin. Later he and Rosie argue over a book and accidentally tear it. He doesn’t want to tell the librarian, but finally musters up the courage to do so. The librarian turns out to be very nice and he helps her fix the book. And Rosie gets her very own library card!

“Caillou the Bookworm”
Returning home from the library Caillou is very eager to sit down and enjoy his pirate book. Unfortunately it’s a very busy day and he’s having trouble finding a quiet place to look at his book. Caillou finally finds the perfect place – in his closet! By the light of his flashlight he finally gets to enjoy his book and pretends he’s the pirate in the story digging up a buried treasure.

“Caillou the Storyteller”
It’s a rainy day at playschool and the children can’t go outside. Caillou makes up a funny story about a superhero who makes the rain stop – it’s Super Caillou! He tells the story to Jeffrey and Jason, and Miss Martin suggests he make his own storybook. She writes the story down and Caillou draws the pictures. By the time Mommy comes to pick him up, Caillou has his very own book to show her!

“Magnet Madness”
Caillou is playing with the fridge magnets and learns lots of things about them. About what they stick to and what they don’t stick to – such as Gilbert! He even imagines himself as a human magnet superhero. In the end Caillou is able to apply what he’s learned and uses a magnet to help Daddy retrieve a metal peg from behind the workbench.

“Caillou the Dinosaur Hunter”
The whole family goes on a trip to the natural history museum to look at the dinosaurs. Caillou is really enjoying himself looking at the skeletons and learning about the different kinds of dinosaurs. When he momentarily loses the others he knows enough to stay put until Mommy comes back and finds him. And when he realizes he’s left Rexy somewhere he learns about the lost and found, and retraces his steps until he finds his dinosaur friend.

“Caillou the Astronaut”
Caillou wants to play with both his friends Clementine and Xavier in the playschool playground. Unfortunately Clementine wants to play bears and Xavier wants to play astronauts, and a little argument ensues. At story time Miss Martin tells them more about spaceships and astronauts and Caillou imagines he’s zooming around the galaxy exploring stars and planets. Back outside Caillou makes up a new astronaut and bear game so everyone can play together.

“Caillou Goes Shopping”
Caillou’s crayons are all worn down or broken, so Mommy suggests a trip to the store for some new ones. Caillou helps Mommy remember what she needs to buy – he remembers the list of items by making a little song out of them. When they’re done they run into Sarah, and Caillou helps her find all her back to school supplies.

“Caillou Goes Apple Picking”
Caillou’s playschool is on a special field trip to an apple orchard. The children really enjoy learning about apples and picking them too. Caillou imagines himself picking the biggest apple in the whole world. Afterwards they enjoy some fresh apple juice. By the time they get back on the bus to go home, Caillou and his friends are all ready for a little nap!

“Caillou’s Halloween Costume”
Halloween is coming and it’s time to pick out a costume to wear. Soon Rosie has three costumes she wants to wear, but Caillou still hasn’t decided on what he wants to be. And time is running out! Finally a piece of blue fake fur gives him a great idea – he’ll be a blue monster! His parents help him fashion an odd but effective monster costume out of bits and pieces they find around the house. When Leo and Clementine arrive they agree that Caillou is a very scary-looking monster indeed!

“Caillou’s Present”
Mommy’s having a bad day – first she can’t find her car keys, then she and Caillou have to shovel the car out, and then the car won’t start! At playschool Caillou decides to make her a present to cheer her up. His first two attempts don’t turn out but he perseveres and makes her a picture of a sun – to melt all the snow!

“Caillou the Chef”
Jeffrey and Jason are coming over for dinner – it’s a make-your-own pizza party! Caillou feels he is an expert at this and starts to show them how to do it. When the twins both opt for less-than-traditional ingredients Caillou is upset that they’re doing it all wrong. In the end, however, their pizzas turn out just fine and Caillou learns that everyone has their own unique way of doing things.

“Caillou the Painter”
Caillou’s got a brand new painting shirt and decides to paint something for Grandma. He has a little trouble deciding what to paint. He wants to use all his colors and paint all his favorite shapes. Mommy tells him that paintings don’t have to be about something and he proceeds to make his own abstract painting! Meanwhile Rosie and Daddy are pressing a flower for Grandma. When Grandma arrives she is thrilled with her very artistic gifts.

Caillou is produced by DHX Media and can be viewed on PBS' children's cable network Sprout and during PBS Kids programming on select local broadcast stations across the country that have included the show on their viewing schedule.  If you have an in-car DVD,  "Caillou Goes Back to School" would be a nice way to keep a child from asking "are we there yet" throughout to drive on an end of summer road trip or it also would be a nice video to put in the DVD player at home on a hot summer day when it probably is better to stay indoors than go outside to play.  Caillou has been one of my kids favorite PBS characters and I'm sure yours will enjoy him too! This DVD is probably best suited for children in the 3 to 5 years old age range, especially those that may be going to preschool or kindergarten for the first time.

When heading back to school make sure you have all your kid's gear labeled with Kidecals

This was a big week in our household...our twin's have graduated from being preschoolers and were starting their first full week of school in Kindergarten.  Not only did we have to deal with all of the anxieties of going to a new school and transitioning from attending classes a few days a week for half a day to going everyday for a full day, but we also had to prepare for addressing our children's food allergies in this new school year.  Ingesting food contaminated by or containing peanuts or absorbing peanut oil into her skin can be deadly for our daughter.  For our son tree nuts can cause his eyes to swell up or potentially even trigger anaphylactic shock.  So it is important for us to do what we can to alert people they need to be cautious and considerate when it comes to eating and handling food around our children.

We used Kidecals labels to help alert others who are around our children about their food allergies.  We placed Kidecals labels on the kids' lunchboxes, backpacks, and water bottles so that they wouldn't easily visible to teachers, parents and students.  You can customize the wording on Kidecals' various designs but we decided to stick with the basic "no nuts" message for ours.  Having a clear visible image to communicate the message like the one we selected in addition to text is so important in making a warning stand out especially when dealing with younger children.

If you want to customize your labels though it is very easy to do.  While you are ordering online at kidecals.com look for the description box next to the image of the design you would like to order.  Say you don't want the standard message "No Nuts" and instead want to place your daughter Cinderella's name on it instead to personalize the label.  Just type in Cinderella in the text box and voila! you'll see the image next to the description box change to show you what your customized label looks like.  Just select the number of labels you want and hit submit to initiate your order.  Simple as that!

In addition to the customization features, what is nice about these labels are that they are very durable and waterproof.  Kidecals are made from self-adhesive vinyl with eco sol inks and laminated with a clear topcoat to ensure durability.  These labels are dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer safe so you don't have to worry about peeling them off when it comes to cleaning any of your kids clothes and gear they might be on.  These aren't just for food allergy warnings there are numerous potential uses for these as kids head back to school such as identifying jackets or bags, personalizing sports equipment, and providing some personality to notebooks and other school supplies.

My wife and I have genuinely been impressed by the quality of these labels which have exceeded our initial expectations.  If you have school aged children, I'd encourage you to swing by the Kidecals.com website and see what they have to offer.

Disclaimer:  A Geek Daddy Blog received a complimentary order of Kidecals to review.  A positive review was not required of this blog and the views/opinions expressed are my own.

Get Out & Play before Summer Days have gone Bye Bye

Wow! once again summer is flying by faster than our family would like.  In just a few weeks our kids' school year will be beginning so I want to maximize their opportunities to get outside while the weather is warm and they have the time to play in the backyard or over at the neighborhood park.  A nice way to excite your kids about playing outside is to pick up a Get Out & Play! Essentials Pack from Imagine Toys.  In addition to providing some great items to keep your kids active and amused outdoors, purchasing this fun play kit helps with a larger societal goal of encouraging children across the country to play outdoors more by providing a donation to the charitable organization KaBoom!  Imagine Toys will donate a minimum of at least 8% of its sales from the Get Out & Play! Essentials Packs this year to support this national non-profit organization that works to bring balanced and active play into the daily lives of all children, particularly those growing up in poverty in America.

Imagine Toys generously provided a Get Out & Play! Essentials Pack for A GEEK DADDY blog to test out and review this summer.  I will be upfront and say that I was initially skeptical of this product being too "basic" to be of much usefulness...seemed like a bunch of "random" stuff just tossed in a bag... but upon receiving it have found it to be very convenient and have been very impressed.  The Get Out & Play! Essentials Pack gathers all sorts of child play items that you might have scattered all over your house, shed or garage and keeps them organized in a backpack that you can easily grab to take outside in the backyard or with you on a trip to the park.  If your kids whine that they don't know what to do outdoors for fun or complain playing outdoors is boring there are plenty of things you can pull out of the backpack to encourage them to play with.  Plus just pulling the items out of the backpack itself seems to add an aura of excitement for the kids.

Additionally, there is a Get Out & Play handbook that comes along with the Essentials Pack that is full of ideas for outdoor games if parents and children may be stumped for an interesting activity to do.  My kids have been asking this summer to play Hopscotch and I hate to admit I had no clue about the rules or how to play this game.  I pulled out the handy guide that came with this play set and there was a whole section that detailed everything I needed to know. So we are going to play Hopscotch this weekend!  Also included in the book are lots of suggestions for variations of tag, hide-and-go-seek, sidewalk, race, ball, and other types of games to capture children's attention and promote excitement with playing outdoors.  All of the "basic" play items that I initially though were "randomly" included actually tie into games suggested in the included Get Out & Play guidebook enhancing their value by being packaged together.  This really is a great play kit!

Along with the book, this play kit is packed with timeless playground essentials including two jump ropes, an 8" dodge ball (the rubbery type I remember from gym class), a flying disc and a few boxes of sidewalk chalk.  All thrown in a high quality backpack that can easily be slung over a shoulder to be carried to where you need to be.  Backpacks are an item that I often come across and am disappointed by flimsy or cheap construction, but I can legitimately say this backpack is really well made and very useful for packing your kids up for an afternoon outside.  The kick ball, jump rope and flying disc are also well constructed so they are sturdy enough to weather rough play and won't break after being used for five minutes by a kid.  In my opinion the Get Out & Play! Essentials Pack is ideal for use by children between the ages of 5 to 10 years old and if you have a kid in that age range I'd recommend you check it out.

The Go Out & Play! Essentials Pack retails for $59.95 at Imagine Toys.  You can select from an orange or purple colored backpack.  With hundreds of cable channels to watch and video games to play on your television, it can be easy for kids to waste away hours sitting on the couch indoors, it is so important as parents that we make an effort to get our children playing outdoors to promote exercise and health living.  This Go Out & Play! Essentials Pack is a great resource for busy parents, or babysitting grandparents like the ones my wife & I depend on when we are at work, to utilize to encourage your kids to engage in some athletic and creative play activities outdoors.
