We were supposed to spend my kids' Spring Break sightseeing in Manhattan but because of the pandemic it was a week of staying around our house instead. Since we weren't going to be visiting the Big Apple, the kids imagined exploring its neighborhoods and landmarks by playing the New York City edition of the Days of Wonder board game TICKET TO RIDE. It provided for a fun time on a cold afternoon when we were cooped up inside.
In this Days of Wonder tabletop game, players compete to secure the taxi cab routes that usher tourists among landmarks and residents between community hubs. Whoever can secure the most lucrative routes scores the most points to win the game. These are obtained by drawing two types of cards during turns and strategically playing them: Transportation Cards and Destination Tickets.
Routes are a variety of lengths ranging from one to four spaces and can be one of seven different colors. Players can draw cards each turn so that they have a maximum of five cards in their hand at any time. Cards are blue, black, green, pink, red and orange and can be turned in to secure a route by matching the same number and color of cards as spaces on the board game.
Wild cards are also available that let a player match it with other cards as the color of their choice. So you could grab a two space green route with one green card and one wild card or two green cards in your hand. If you don't have a combination of cards for a route you want, a player may have to select another choice on the game board so they can than pick new cards from the deck.
For example, someone may want to grab a three green space route but only has one green card along with solo orange, blue, and pink cards as well as a wild. In that case you would have to secure on the single space colored routes (we'll say blue) to be able to draw another card for your hand. If lucky, the next card would be green and that along with the existing matching card and wild in your hand would let you grab the desired route. But if say a pink card is pulled a player may need to alter their game plan. The randomness of the card pulls is what makes TICKET TO RIDE: NEW YORK fun to play.
Destination Tickets are what adds a competitive edge to this game which can be played by 2 - 4 players. Everyone pulls two Destination Tickets that highlight a path between two locations that a player needs to unite routes so as to create a continuous path. Your Destination Tickets are kept secret from other players during the game. Competitors are supposed to try and guess where each other are trying to go and block their opponents from obtaining all the routes to get there.
For example if you have a Destination Ticket to go from Lincoln Center to the Empire State Building and are able to secure an unblocked path there with your cabs than at the end of the game you will get the 3 points printed on that Destination Ticket added to your score. On the other hand if you have a Destination Ticket to go between the United Nations and Wall Street but are unable to achieve that goal than at the end of the game you will lose the 8 points printed on that card at the end of the game from your final score.
Players who complete both Destination Tickets can pull another one from the deck if they want. This means they could add or possibly lose more points. This is optional though and players can stick with just the ones they drew at the beginning of the game. Every player though has to utilize a minimum of two Destination Tickets during the game. This aspect of the game adds mystery and intensity to TICKET TO RIDE that compliments the randomness of the Transportation Card pulls.
Whoever gains the most points during the game wins. A game ends when all the players have run out of taxis or all the routes have been taken. The game includes score cards to tally everything up.
Points are earned by claiming routes. Players get 1 pt for a one space route, 2 pts for a two space route, four pts for a three space route, and 7 pts for a four space route. See where you've placed your taxi cabs and add up your points.
Next players add or lose points based upon whether or not they completed the Destination Tickets in their hand. So if you didn't get that trip done between the United Nations and Wall Street done subtract 8 pts from your Route Point tally. On the other hand if you completed the task add those points to your score.
Finally you can get +1 bonus points for connecting tourist attractions. These are identified with a cooper circle with a white one number one printed inside. If you have routes that connect between these points add bonus points to your score. So for example if you have all the routes in a circle connecting Central Park, United Nations, the Empire State Building and Times Square that would be four bonus points added to your score. When picking routes keep an eye out for ones that are bookended by two bonus markers.
There you have TICKET TO RIDE: NEW YORK in a nutshell. What I particularly appreciated about this game is that it is rather quick to setup and play. Games average about 15 minutes. So you can pull it off a game shelf and play a few bouts of it during a lazy weekend afternoon or for a family game night. The other day we played six games in about an hour and a half. We had to keep going until my son finally won.
Because my family had a lot of fun playing TICKET TO RIDE: NEW YORK it earned a Geek Daddy nod of approval. If you are looking for a game that isn't too complicated to play yet provides a lot of entertainment value this is the game you have been looking for. I also liked that it is very portable to take along while traveling as well as doesn't take up much space to store at home. A great selection for family gaming fun appropriate for ages 8+ from Days of Wonder. You can pick up the game at a good price from Target.
Looking for some fun activities for a family get together, neighborhood block party, or a PTA fundraiser? My friends at Wholesale Party Supplies provided me with some great DIY tips for building carnival games that are sure to add some thrills to your event. You don't have to go to an amusement park or county fair to have fun playing carnival games by following these instructions to build your own out of pegboard.
DIY Bean Bag Basket Toss
Spray paint one side of your peg board the color you want your carnival game to be. Then attach two wood beams to the other side of the peg board as legs to prop up the bean bag basket toss at your preferred angle. You will want to do this for all three of these carnival game templates.
Line up nine same sized buckets preferably of different colors to create a square block on a pegboard. Good colors for buckets are red, yellow, white and blue for a carnival vibe. Place your buckets on the ground face down and place the pegboard on top, also face down. Use a Sharpie marker to mark two holes on the bottom of each bucket then drill over each of these marks.
Use zip ties to secure these baskets in place on the pegboard. Clip the ends of the extra zip tie length with a wire cutter. Once you've secured the baskets attach two wood boards to the back of the peg board as legs to prop up the bean bag basket toss at your preferred angle.
Download these Bean Bag Basket Toss printables from Wholesale Party Supplies. Cut out these shapes and adhere inside the baskets using hot glue. These make up the points people score when a bean bag lands in a particular bucket. Whoever gets the most points tallied from tossing their bean bags into the buckets wins. Give them a prize!
DIY Balloon Darts
To create the balloon darts game, stuff balloons with prizes like candy, coins or small toys. Blow them up and twist the end, but don’t tie it.
Stuff the knot through the hole and tie it on the other end to secure.
Take turns throwing darts at the balloons. Whichever balloon a person pops they get the prize inside. When kids are involved, adult supervision is required for playing this game!
DIY Ring Toss
To create the ring toss game, cut (14) 6” wood dowels. Insert them in a foam block and paint them with white paint.
Once dry, twist and insert the dowels into select holes on your pegboard.
To play, snap a glow stick and create a bracelet out of it. Have players take turns tossing the bracelet at the pegs. See who can get the most on the pegs!
This dad blogger can picture my own family cooking up some corn dogs and corn on the cob to eat while having an outdoor game night with some carnival flair. These games would also be a fun activity to incorporate into a family movie night before watching flicks like Dumbo or Wonder Park. Since they are fairly easy to put together and set up these would also be perfect for school or community events taking place in gymnasiums or at playgrounds and parks. Carnival Games are surefire way to provide a festive time!
You are an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. taking part in a mission to hunt down rogues and monsters who are on the loose when playing the Marvel edition of the role playing card game MUNCHKIN from usaopoly. Three to six players imagine they are exploring an abandoned warehouse, villain's lair, historic castle, space station, or any other place evil doers may be lurking. Players begin as a rookie S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and progress through the game leveling up by defeating villains encountered while knocking down doors looking for trouble. The first player to have his or her character achieve a LEVEL TEN rank wins the game.
Players start off by selecting the agent they want to play as. There are six agent classifications to choose from: Espionage, Operations, Recon, Recruiting, Tactical, and Tech. Each type of agent has a different special ability that can be used in the game so it is important to keep this in mind when selecting who you want to be.
In the middle of all the players are two decks of cards. One deck contains DOOR CARDS which may have a villain or monster to fight, a trap to get entangled in or loot to discover displayed on the card's back side. These identify what are in the rooms of the space you are exploring. The other deck has TREASURE CARDS which are equipment, special abilities, weapons and sometimes even a super hero ally that help players enhance their combat ranking. Treasure is earned by winning battles or stealing from other players.
Next every player rolls the included die. The first player who lands the Munchkin symbol on the die gets to go first. That player draws a door card. By pulling one of these cards from the deck, a player is opening a door to find out what is behind it.
You may encounter a TRAP which could cause your character to lose levels, give up equipped items or have other negative ramifications. Alternatively, LOOT may be discovered which is a card you can keep in your hand to use later in the game. Some of these loot cards can be used to increase the combat ranking of a monster or villain that another player is fighting to give your character an edge in winning the game. Others may provide a bonus such as making your character immune to traps.
Additionally, there may be something to fight lurking behind a door. In a fight whatever you are battling against will have a combat ranking. For example, if you stumble upon LOKI the Asgardian trickster has a score of 20. Your S.H.I.E.L.D. agent must have a combination of level + bonus attributes from special abilities, allies, loot and treasure to have a higher combat ranking to win the battle.
Can't do that? You can try to run away by rolling a 5 or 6 on the game die. If that is not successful you can ask another player to join in the battle.
So if your character has combat rank of 12 and another play has a rank of 9 you can team up with a combined score of 21 to defeat Loki (20). Of course expect that other player to ask for something in return such as splitting the TREASURE earned by winning the battle or having you give over a loot card from your hand. Note yet another player who doesn't want to have you win the battle could also join the fray by using a loot card that adds +5 or +10 points to Loki's combat ranking giving him a combat rank of 25 or 30. Remember only one player can ultimately win the game by being the first to have a character reach Level 10.
If your character loses in battle, you must follow the "Bad Stuff" instructions listed on your adversary's card. This could be losing an equipped item, being reduced a level or even your character dying. In the case of losing to Loki, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent would discard all of the cards in his or her hand and lose a level for each card discarded.
Winning in combat always bumps a character up a level. Plus the foe you defeat may also provide other benefits such as treasure. Look to see if the defeated monster or villain lists a number of cards you can pull from the TREASURE deck. A treasure card may give you an item like the MIND GEM which forces another player to help you in combat, an ally such as Spider-Man who increases your combat ranking by +2 or a weapon which could be Captain America's Shield that provides a +3 to your combat ranking. For defeating Loki, the reward is going up 2 levels instead of just one and pulling 5 treasure cards.
So when we played the Marvel edition of MUNCHKIN, Baby Groot eventually won the game. To conclude the game he was at Level 8 with a combat ranking of 15 based upon having Daredevil, my favorite super hero, as an ally and being equipped with Nick Fury's eye patch, an Iron Man repulsor and Captain America's shield. He pulled a door card to encounter VENOM! The evil symbiote's combat ranking was 10. Fifteen beats ten so Groot gained a level moving up to Level 9.
He then played a loot card from his hand that was acquired earlier in the game. This card let him steal a level from another player. Swiping a level from my daughter meant she went down from Level 7 to Level 6 while Groot went up from Level 9 to Level 10. Groot was the first player to reach Level 10 and is the champion. Of course, we were all winners since my while family had a lot of fun playing the game!
Marvel Edition of MUNCHKIN has earned A Geek Daddy nod of approval for being an entertaining game that doesn't involve spending any video game screen time. This card game provides imaginative play experiences that immerse players into the Marvel comic book universe. Encounter infamous villains Baron Zemo, Doctor Octopus, Kingpin, Green Goblin and Red Skull. Team up with favorite Marvel super heroes including Ant-Man, Black Panther and Captain Marvel. Wield iconic weapons such as Mjolnir, Spider-Man's web shooters and Hawkeye's bow. Anyone who is a fan of Marvel comic book stories and movies will appreciate being able to take part in their own super hero adventure by playing the Marvel Edition of MUNCHKIN.

We enjoyed a fun family game night on May the Fourth playing the STAR WARS DESTINY dice and card game from Fantasy Flight. This is an exciting fast-paced two player game that lets you imagine some of your favorite Star Wars characters dueling against one another for control of an iconic Star Wars location. Each player controls a team of two characters of the same persuasion from the Star Wars movies (Light Side / Dark Side / Neutral) who fight using blasters, lightsabers, and other weapons that are represented by dice which are rolled to inflict damage on their opponents. To win the game you need to wipe out both characters from the other players team by depleting their hit points. Last one standing wins!
This game is more than just rolling dice though. Each player also has a deck of support cards that can be utilized to provide benefits such as using the force, upgrading a weapon, boosting damage in an attack, restoring lost hit points, or shielding a character. These support cards add suspense, strategy and skill as elements of the game so that winning at STAR WARS DESTINY is based upon both how your dice fall and how you utilize the cards in your hand.
We played the STAR WARS DESTINY starter kit during our May the Fourth family game night. It comes with everything you need to play a match which pits Rey and Poe Dameron (Resistance) versus Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma (First Order). Each of these four main characters has a description card that lists various attributes such as their unique hit points and exclusive special abilities. These description cards also come with a corresponding die that is the device used in conducting each character's primary attack versus opponents. Both teams also have a deck of 20 support cards that they can access during the game to assist their characters.
Plus there are additional dice within the starter kit that are attached to some of the support cards. For example, Poe Dameron's blaster upgrade support card when activated provides that character a second die that can be rolled along with his first during attacks that increases the damage that can be inflicted. Kylo Ren has a lightsaber upgrade card that also allows for a second die to be rolled during attacks. Of course having double dice doesn't mean you are going to hit your target ... every die in addition to having sides that indicate causing damage to your enemy's health also has a side that designates you missed in your weapon's swing or shot allowing your opponent to getaway with zero damage to their hit points. Doah!
A nice aspect of this game is that the average game only takes about twenty to thirty minutes to play. We played three games in an hour and a half. First my son and daughter matched up. I played the winner of that game ... my daughter. Then I played a bout versus my son. Have to admit not taking it easy on them as A Geek Daddy is currently undefeated at STAR WARS DESTINY.
STAR WARS DESTINY does have a bit of a learning curve when it comes to getting a grasp on the rules and a comfort level with the game play. Once you've delved into it though it is easy to catch on how to play the game. It reminds me of another game my family really enjoys playing, Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle from USAopoly. This was our first time playing the game and we enjoyed it from the get go.
We really had a fantastic time playing this game. STAR WARS DESTINY has earned A Geek Daddy nod of approval for combining cards and dice into the gameplay, its incorporation of elements from the sci-fi space opera that provide a vibe of being transported to a galaxy far, far away, and the impressive artwork displayed upon the game's character and support cards. Bravo Fantasy Flight!
While the starter kit only allows you to play Rey and Poe versus Kylo and Phasma, Fantasy Flight has included a collectible deck building component to this game similar to Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering. Fans of the game can purchase expansion pack that allows them to play as another team complete with their own set of unique support cards and dice. Expansion packs include Luke Skywalker + Han Solo, Boba Fett + Imperial Stormtrooper, Rey + Finn, and Kylo + First Order Stormtrooper.
There are also booster packs based upon different themes from the various Star Wars movies that can be collected. The themes are Awakenings, Spirit of Rebellion, Empire at War, Legacies, and Ways of the Force. Each theme consists of 36 blind bag booster packs to discover that cost approximately $3 each. Every booster pack includes five randomized cards and one premium die, broken down into three common cards, one uncommon card, and one rare or legendary card with a corresponding die. In booster packs you can find new primary characters to play as (like Mace Windu, General Grievous, Ezra Bridger, and Admiral Thrawn) support cards and dice to help players to enhance their Star Wars game playing experience.
We bought our starter kit at Best Buy and it is available at a number of other major retailers. Expansion and booster packs are available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Target, Walmart and specialty comic book, gaming and hobby shops as well as directly from the Fantasy Flight website. Everyone in our family is a big fan of the wizarding world created by author J.K. Rowling and enjoyed an evening at home together having fun with a Harry Potter themed game night. The nice folks at Costume SuperCenter helped get us into character for our Harry Potter game night providing us with costumes for some of our favorite characters. Dressed up for the occasion we had an entertaining evening playing a Top Trumps card game, USAopoly's CLUE board game, and the LEGO DIMENSIONS video game.
My son dressed as the famous boy wizard in his Quidditch team robe along with his Firebolt Broom while my daughter was outfitted in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry uniform of Hermione Granger. I sported a Newt Scamander costume from the movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The kids also brought out their magic wands we picked up during a vacation at Universal Orlando Resort's Wizarding World of Harry Potter to help set the mood.
TOP TRUMPS
We started our evening off playing a few rounds of the Top Trumps card game. Top Trumps card decks have been popular overseas in the United Kingdom for decades. Teachers over there have been recommending students play this card game which incorporate a variety of themes ranging from animals to super heroes since the 1970's as a fun way to improve children's literacy and numeracy skills. Over the last ten years, more than 80 million packs of Top Trumps cards have been sold in England making it one of the best-selling games in that country. Top Trumps games are just becoming available in the United States and if you have children between the ages of 6 and 12 you should absolutely check them out.
Top Trumps has a variety of card decks themed around various Harry Potter movies including Prisoner of Azkaban, Half-Blood Prince, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, and Deathly Hallows Part I + Part II. Each card in one of these Top Trumps' Harry Potter movie decks is based upon a character from the film. It has an illustration of the character from a scene in the movie, a paragraph describing the scene, and game rankings for the character in the categories of magic, cunning, courage, wisdom and temper for use in playing the game. We had the Deathly Hallows Part I + Part II Top Trumps decks to play for our Harry Potter family game night.
To start the game, shuffle and deal all the cards in the deck face down to the number of people who want to play. Each player picks up the card at the top of their pile so only he or she can see it. The player to the left of the dealer starts out by naming the character on the card being held and reading a category from it (Magic 95). The other players then identify the characters on their cards and read out the same category. The one with the highest value wins the hand and takes all the cards. If there is a tie than the cards are placed in the middle of all the players and whoever wins the next round wins them from both rounds. You flip over one card dealt to you each round so players don't know what entirely they have in their stack as you are playing through the game.
So for example in one round I had Mr. Ollivander and called out WISDOM 72, my daughter had Ron Weasley WISDOM 60 and my son had Severus Snape WISDOM 76. He won the round and took everyone's cards. From a strategic standpoint you never want to let people know the character in your hand before the person who starts a round says who he or she has. In another round it was my turn to start, I had a Harry Potter card and was about to call out MAGIC 95. My son blurted out he had Lord Voldemort before I said anything. Considering Voldemort might be more powerful in magic than Harry Potter I instead called out COURAGE 80. My son replied COURAGE 0. Ha Ha Dad won that round!
Players can choose two different ways to determine a winner. One is when you win cards they can be shuffled into your deck and used in future rounds. The game goes on until only one person is left with cards who is the winner.
The other version is players place the cards they win off to the side. Once one player has lost all of his or her cards the game ends and everyone else counts all the cards they have. Whoever has the most cards wins the game.
My kids always have a great time playing the Top Trumps card games and because they have a huge variety of decks to choose from it is always a nice option to include in a themed family game night. Despicable Me, DC Comics, Marvel, and Star Wars are some of the brands of Top Trumps card decks available that would make great themes for a game night. Plus when you are done playing Top Trumps, the deck comes with a sturdy plastic case to keep your cards stored in when not being played with.
BUTTERBEER BREAK
Between playing Top Trumps and our next game, we took a Butterbeer break. Actually we substituted a Detroit classic, Vernor's Ginger Ale, for Butterbeer. It was still a delicious treat for our Harry Potter game night!
CLUE
Next we played a Harry Potter version of the mystery board game CLUE from USAopoly. The plot of the game revolves around a student at famous Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry vanishing. It is up to the players in the game to solve this mysterious disappearance. Playing as Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Luna, or Neville you try to discover WHO did, WHAT spell or item they used on the student, and WHERE the attack took place.
Just like how the staircases move at Hogwarts in the Harry Potter books and movies, as players move around the game board trying to solve the mystery each turn wheels are shifted changing the setting by revealing blocked doorways, secret passages and even the Dark Mark! You'll need to protect yourself from the Dark Mark with spells, allies, and items provided through Help Cards. If you can make it around the USAopoly Harry Potter CLUE game board and protect yourself from the Dark Mark you should be able to gather enough evidence to solve the mystery. Get to Dumbledore's office and make your accusation to win the game!
USAopoly Harry Potter CLUE is meant for 3 to 5 players and recommended for ages 9+. To get a better description of how to play the game and more detailed look inside the game's box from USAopoly please CLICK HERE. My daughter won our evening game of CLUE proclaiming it was Dolores Umbridge with the sleeping draught in the potions classroom who made the Hogwarts student go missing.
LEGO DIMENSIONS
We wrapped up the evening playing the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them story pack for the LEGO DIMENSIONS video game on our PlayStation 4. This expansion to the video game is based upon the prequel movie to the Harry Potter series of films and provides six new levels of gameplay revolving around Newt Scamander's efforts to find his escaped magical creatures within New York City.
As Newt Scamander, players can utilize magical spells including Diffindo, Reparo and Lumos plus interact with fantastic beasts like the Niffler, Swooping Evil, Bowtruckle and more. The story pack also unlocks two Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them themed open play areas, an Adventure World and Battle Arena. Within the Battle Arena up to four people can play at once with split screen views as they compete against one another in different types of matches.
In addition to playing as Newt Scamander, you can also use any other character available in the LEGO DIMENSIONS collection within the story levels, Adventure World and Battle Arena. So of course we added Harry Potter and Hermione Granger into our gameplay! Our whole family always has a good time playing LEGO DIMENSIONS together and the video game was a great fit for our Harry Potter game night.
Kids grow up so fast! Adding a bit of flair to a night of fun playing games together is a great way to get children engaged in participating while allowing adults to have a good time too. Plus nights like these make for some great family memories! We really had a magical time during our Harry Potter Family Game Night that we are sure to remember.
