DOUBLE DUTY DAD

As a criminal defense attorney, I've seen first hand the negative influences on society and in people's lives caused by absent and abusive fathers.  More than 70% of my clients either haven't had a father involved in their childhood or where the victims of child abuse. This neglect impacts these individuals into their adulthood contributing to alcohol / drug abuse, criminal behavior, and a cyclical pattern of treating their own offspring in the same manner as they were as kids.

Being exposed to these scenarios on a regular basis has inspired me to give extra effort at being a good dad for my kids.  From adventurous family road trips to lengthy evenings helping out with math homework at the kitchen table being involved in my children's lives is a priority for me. Taking them to work so they understand my career plus turning down client cases so I can spend the summers with them instead of putting the kids in daycare are examples of how dads as parents can pull double duty balancing both professional and personal obligations. I may be exhausted after a day full of courthouse proceedings but will still be enthusiastically out on a soccer field that night coaching a practice or cheering on a game my kids are involved in. Being present in the moment and making the most of every minute you have with your kids in my opinion is one of the most important, and valuable, aspects of fatherhood.

DAD TIME AT GOLDFISH SWIM SCHOOL

An aspect I've appreciated about Goldfish Swim School is that it is a very dad-friendly environment. Compared to taking my kids to other activities like dance class and soccer practice where it tends to be mostly moms that stick around, fathers seem to be very involved whenever we go swimming. From jumping in the pool with toddlers for parent-tot programs to cheering on tweens in Swim Force competitions there is a lot of dad involvement at Goldfish Swim School.

Here are some ways dads create golden experiences with their kids at Goldfish Swim School:

TODDLER SWIM

Getting kids comfortable in water at an early age is a great way to teach them some water safety skills, interest them in swimming, obtain some exercise, and have some fun. Goldfish Swim School has a Mini Class which has parents get in the pool with their children that are between the ages of 4 and 35 months. Instructors lead classes that include entertaining activities and games plus instill safety tips meant to provide children with the wherewithal to assist themselves in avoiding drowning accidents.

There are a lot of fathers who participate in these Mini Class sessions with their sons and daughters. In fact, some of these parent - tot classes are made up of just dads. SWIM LESSONS

For older children who are diving into the pool on their own for swimming lessons without dad or mom getting into the water with them, there is still an opportunity for spending parenting time at Goldfish Swim School. I spent some time chatting with fellow dad, Chris McCuiston, the co-founder of the swim school my kids take lessons at in this edition of A Geek Daddy's DAD TO DAD CHAT segment.  Chris started Goldfish Swim School with his wife as a single location in Birmingham, Michigan eleven years ago and over the last decade has franchised more than 40 locations across the United States.  He shares some thoughts with us about entrepreneurship, fatherhood, and swimming lessons.

Since starting Goldfish Swim School not only has your business grown but so has your family.  Tell us about your kids?

I'm the proud dad of four boys ranging in age from 2 to 8 -- Charlie, Jack, Brody & Reid.

As a dad yourself what do you really want to instill with the kids who attend Goldfish Swim School?  

We want to help children build a respect and love for the water while building safer and more confident swimmers.

How does Goldfish stand out from other swimming instructional programs?  

When my wife, Jenny, first came to me with the idea of opening a swim school, it was because she knew there was a better way and better place to teach swim lessons. We’ve fulfilled that need with Goldfish – not only do we build our facilities with kids and families in mind (warm water, inviting environment, private changing rooms, hair drying stations, bright colors, etc.), we also offer a safe place for kids to learn about water safety, while also having fun. Our members become a part of our Goldfish family and we love hearing how much their families love Goldfish.

How can dads utilize the Goldfish Swim School experience as a way to bond with their kids?

In our Mini classes, dads can get in the water with their babies and spend an uninterrupted 30 minutes bonding with their child. That time is so important and beneficial not only to each child’s individual growth, but also to their relationship with their parent. As your kids get older, the entire family can come and enjoy Family Swim – having fun in the water, working on new skills and playing with our water toys. We have monthly Family Night Out events as a time for families to come together, enjoy each other’s company and have fun!

What is the most important thing every parent should know when it comes to water safety and their kids?  

The most important thing is to always make sure that an adult is supervising your kids while they are in and around the water. Swim lessons are the number one way to help keep your kids safer around the water, but it is still so important that someone is watching. Accidents can happen in an instant.

Goldfish has gone from a single mom and pop operated location in Birmingham, MI to becoming a successful corporation franchising numerous locations in multiple states -- what is your continuing vision and expectations for the brand?  

We never imagined that Jenny’s vision would turn into what it is today, it’s amazing how far we’ve come in 11 years. Our goals for the future are to continue to grow into new markets – the more locations we open, the more kids and families we have the ability to teach. We are committed to continuing to provide the best service, teachers and curriculum to remain the premier learn-to-swim destination for families. We want to continue to have a positive impact on the community and help more and more kids learn how to be safer in and around the water.

How do you balance work life and family life ensuring you spend quality time with your kids? What is your favorite way to bond with your kids?  

We balance work and life by making sure we set clear expectations around work and play. Clear communication is important along with accountability. We also have the benefit of working together so that helps us find time to be together both in and out of work. Jenny and I were both former athletes so we enjoy spending time with our kids on the baseball field, football field and in the pool.  

You played collegiate baseball at Michigan State University -- has that experience impacted how you handle your professional and personal life?  

Playing college baseball taught me a lot about teamwork, how to handle responsibility and how to handle winning and losing. There are so many situations that you encounter playing a college sport and I think those situations prepared me for the challenges of running a business and having a family.  

You obviously were involved with sports as a kid -- how important do you believe it is for today's children to be involved with organized athletic activities whether that be playing on a school sports team, joining a rec soccer league or participating in a swimming program at Goldfish? 

 I think being involved in sports and activities is so important for a child’s development. It teaches kids to be a part of something that is bigger than them, how to work with others and to set goals and work to achieve them. They will carry and use those skills for the rest of their lives.

Does your family have any traditions when it comes to celebrating Fathers Day with you?  

The only tradition is to allow Dad to sleep in.  With a family of 4 boys, there is not a lot of quiet time or down time. In all honesty, we tend to spend the day together and cook out with family at night. I enjoy entertaining and being with people so it’s fun to get the family together for special events.

A DAD'S FATHERS DAY THANK YOU TO HIS BABIES

While celebrating the dads in our life on Fathers Day lets also take a moment to reflect on the babies that transformed these men into the guys they are today.  Before becoming a dad myself, I'd never changed a diaper, song a lullubi, or been responsible for teaching important life lessons like tying shoes or riding a bike.  Since becoming a dad I've witnessed a transformation in myself becoming less self-centered and more family oriented.

WHERE THE WILD DADS WENT

Maurice Sendak's Where The Wild Things Are was one of my favorite picture books as a child and it maintains a prominent spot on my children's bookshelf as well.  So my son and I enjoyed spending some time reading together a parody of this classic story that is devoted to telling the tale of running away from life through the perspective of a dad.  In this new adaption of the story, a tired and emotional dad finds himself transported to the place WHERE THE WILD DADS WENT.

The night Dad had a few cheeky ones after work,

forgot the milk and tripped over the rubbish,

Mum called him A Wild Thing

and said "Don't mind me!"

and spend the rest of the night on the phone 

with Debs from down the road.

 Just like the boy in Where The Wild Things Are, the dad in this story wishes to escape from the doldrums of life to a place where he can just have fun.  He finds himself transported to a fantastic world full of beer drinking, air guitar playing, and foosball bouts.  Pretty soon though he begins to miss the place he left behind.

CELEBRATING DADS WITH THE CARE BEARS

Care Bears fans can show a dad in their life how much they care about him on Father Day with these fun gift ideas.  The best gifts don't have to be bought and here are a few ways to make a hand-made present that will touch dad's heart.  Celebrate #DadsWhoCare this Fathers Day!

What you will need:

• 1 dozen donuts 

• 2 cartons of white frosting 

• 1-2 drops of blue, white, and black food coloring 

• 1 small bag of candy melts, any color 

• 2 quart zip-up plastic bags

Preparation:

• Crush 2 donuts and stuff into the remaining donut's holes 

• Place one carton of frosting into one bowl, and split the other carton into two bowls 

• Add 1-2 drops of blue food coloring into the larger bowl of frosting and whisk 

• Add 1-2 drops of black food coloring into one of the two smaller bowls and whisk 

• Leave the other small bowl of frosting white 

• Dip donuts in blue frosting or brush with a small spatula I

• Insert two candy melts for the ears 

• Paint the ears with the same frosting covering the bear  

• Let dry for 30 minutes 

• Place white and black frosting in separate small zip-up bags 

• Zip both bags shut and cut a small hole in the bottom corner of each 

• Squeeze a small amount of white frosting in a circular/oval shape to create the mouth 

• Squeeze a small amount of black frosting in a circular/oval shape to create the eyes 

• Dip the toothpick in the colored frosting bowl to draw the nose, mouth and eyebrows 

• If you don't want to literally duplicate  Grumpy Care Bear's appearance you can always reverse the smile for some added cheer

• Take a photo and share on social media using #MyCareBearsDonuts 

Major League Baseball Celebrates Fathers Day

Major League Baseball teams will be celebrating Fathers Day by having their players don special uniforms and use commemorative balls during games taking place on June 18th.  Players will be sporting baby blue colored caps, jerseys and socks in honor of dads.  The baseballs in these games will also feature a unique blue stitching color pattern.

If you like these uniforms picking one up for yourself also benefits a worthy cause -->  prostate cancer research.  MLB royalties from the sales of replica apparel from these special outfits will be donated to the  Prostate Cancer Foundation and Stand Up to Cancer.  I like that in addition to the snapback style caps with their large flat brims that are popular today, New Era has also produced the Fathers Day hats in what has become called the "dad cap."  Dad caps tend to be made of canvas or cotton and have a slightly curved brim.  I guess I'm starting to show my age when the hat I prefer to wear is called a dad cap.

LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures Season 2

Last summer I really enjoyed relaxing with my kids watching the Disney XD animated television series THE FREEMAKER ADVENTURES.  The show features two things that my kids and I both love --> LEGO and Star Wars!  So it was really fun sharing some time watching a show that my kids and I equally enjoyed.  Containing the quirky humor LEGO television shows and movies have become known for with the characters and places from the Star Wars galaxy has made this a splendid show that adults and children can watch together and mutually like.  So it seems only fitting that the first show of Season 2 is debuting Fathers Day Weekend with the remainder of the episodes being broadcast later in the summer.  You know I'm going to be watching with my family!

The show's story takes place between Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. THE FREEMAKER ADVENTURES has introduced Star Wars fans to a new trio of characters, the Freemaker family consisting of three siblings — Rowan, his sister Kordi, and their brother Zander — who salvage parts to build and repair spaceships.  They are joined in their adventures by their companion R0-GR, a salvaged Clone Wars era battle droid. When Rowan discovers he has a connection with the Force, the Freemakers become ensnared in the battle between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance.  Season 2 begins with the Freemakers being recruited by Admiral Ackbar (Return of the Jedi) and General Syndulla (Star Wars Rebels) for a special mission.



While waiting for episode one of LEGO Star Wars THE FREEMAKER ADVENTURES to debut on Disney XD on Saturday, June 17, 2017 (11:00 am ET/PT) head over to the LEGO or Disney XD websites to watch all of Season 1's episodes for FREE.  While there you can also watch for FREE 5 new mini-episodes that are each five minutes long that bridge the gap between Season 1 & Season 2 of the THE FREEMAKER ADVENTURES.  I'm not sure how long these will be available to view for free online so watch them while you can.
