LEGO DC SUPER VILLAINS VIDEO GAME

You have to admit sometimes it's good to be bad! The newest LEGO themed video game being developed by TT Games for Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment is going to let you have a good time playing through adventures as LEGO mini-figure versions of bad guys and gals from the DC Comics universe.  My family has had some great times playing video games that have provided LEGO style portrayals of franchises like Jurassic World, Harry Potter, and Star Wars; so we're excited that in October a new DC universe themed one is being released.

LEGO DC SUPER-VILLAINS is going to have a unique twist as it will be the first LEGO game to put players at the center of a villain-centric adventure filled with favorite locations and characters from across the DC universe.  It will let you create and play your way through it as your own customized super villain through a story filled with the tongue and cheek humor and wacky vibe that has become a trademark of LEGO cartoons and video games.  This customized character actually becomes the focal point of the game's adventure teaming up with a variety of iconic villains from the pages of DC Comics to do the unexpected … save the day!

All-New DC Universe BATMAN AND HARLEY QUINN Movie

Tickets are now available to see a one night only cinematic showing of the newest DC Universe animated movie, BATMAN AND HARLEY QUINN, on August 14, 2017 presented by Warner Bros. Studios, DC Entertainment, and Fathom Events.  It will be playing in select movie theaters across the United States one night prior to the movie's digital release and 15 days in advance of its arrival on Blu-ray and DVD.  The theatrical event will also include an exclusive sneak peek to a featurette spotlighting the film's star character, Harley Quinn.

Halloween has always been one of my favorite times of the year ever since I was a little kid ... haunted houses, trick-or-treating, scary movies are fun thrills to enjoy throughout the month of October. 5.  WATCH CONSTANTINE ON NBC

Constantine is a new television series on NBC premiering on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 10pm ET/PT.  The series will focus on John Constantine a dark exorcist, occult detective and con man who is struggling with his past sins as he attempts to protect humanity from a gathering supernatural threat.  Constantine is based on the Hellblazer comic book originally published by DC Comics and more recently by its Vertigo imprint.

2. WATCH THE WALKING DEAD ON AMC

If you enjoy being spooked out  than the AMC cable network's hit series The Walking Dead is a must watch show.  The premise of the television series now in its fifth season is that an epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe. Now the dead  are walking the world with a hunger to feed on the dwindling number of survivors who manage to stay alive. 

The television show is based on The Walking Dead comic book series published by Image Comics starting in 2003 and is a still ongoing monthly serial.  In 2010 it received the Eisner Award for Best Ongoing Series.  Eisner Awards are like Emmy Awards for comic books recognizing the best in the industry each year.  The Walking Dead comic books are also a great read, especially during this time of year.  They are printed in black & white which enhances the horrific nature of the stories.

There is no Injustice in basing a Comic Book on a Video Game

At first though you probably wouldn't believe that a comic book series based off of a video game would be very good but rather just consider it another marketing ploy to pull some money out of your pocket as part of a product tie-in campaign.  In the case of the comic that is the topic of this review it is a comic book based upon a video game that is based upon comic book characters and I have to say the thought I just expressed is absolutely not the case.  DC Comic's INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US comic book series, which is now in its second year as a monthly comic book serial, is probably the BEST product that this publisher is printing.  If you haven't read any of its issues I encourage you to do so!

Injustice: Gods Among us is based on the hit video game of the same name.  The story arc for this series serves as a prequel for the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game plot.  It features all of the popular characters from the DC Universe but in an alternate dimension where just one different act sets it apart from the mainstream New 52 timeline that most of the publishers other comic book titles are set in.  This is a BIG event that sets these universes apart though!  You see the Joker bored with his confrontations with Batman decides to go after some bigger prey for some fun and games .... Superman.  The series starts off with the Joker ambushing and murdering Lois Lane (who is pregnant with Superman's child) and than destroying all of  Superman's adopted hometown of Metropolis in a nuclear explosion.

So how will Superman react?  Well not in the do no harm manner people may expect of him ... Superman literally hunts down the Joker and rips his heart out!!!!

Superman than determines it is his job to save humanity from itself and makes himself a global dictator utilizing the Justice League to serve as his enforcers.  This doesn't go well with law and order Batman who believes in not killing villains leading an insurgency against Superman's regime.  The primary plot conflict is Superman blaming Batman for the Joker's actions believing that if the caped crusader had killed the clown in earlier confrontations Lois & Metropolis would have been saved thus embracing violence to respond to crime versus Batman believing all life is too valuable for anyone to take and that democracy should always rule over dictatorship.  This results in an epic battle pitting Superman's allies versus Batman's.  Year One of the series ends with Superman prevailing in this conflict leaving the Martian Man Hunter and Green Arrow dead and Batman is seriously injured and on the run.

You'd think the second year of this series wouldn't be able to keep the momentum up but Injustice: Gods Among Us Year 2 is just as good as the first year which says a lot!  I caught up on the Year 2 action by reading the compilation of the first five monthly issues titled INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US YEAR 2 VOLUME 1 and can honestly say I was very impressed by the work done by writer Tom Taylor and a team of artists that includes Mike S. Miller, Bruno Redondo and Tom Derenick.  The graphic novel picks up right where Year One left off and is a great read!  It is filled with crisp eye-catching artwork that enhances the enjoyment of reading a story that you don't want to put down.

Injustice: Gods Among Us has some mature themes and I'm not just referring to violent action and death scenes but also a plot filled with philosophical debates on morality?  Is it alright to do evil things for the "better good"?  Can good people believe they are acting appropriately but for the wrong reasons?  Should people give up freedom for security?  Who really defines what ethics are?  How do you know for sure the "good guy" isn't really the "villain" and the "bad guy" isn't really a "hero?"  Some weighty topics that expand this comic book beyond just action sequences and really makes the story and its script stand out beyond its imagery. 

So what happens in Year 2?  Batman and his allies are out of the picture now (for the time being) but Superman's behavior has troubled the Green Lantern Corps which comes to arrest him and place him on trial for his actions.  Lots of action and intrigue ensues.  I'm not going to provide any spoilers rather just encourage you to read Injustice: Gods Among Us Year Two.  It is well worth the read!

Forever Evil

What would a world dominated by super villains look like?  DC Comics approached this topic in its recent seven issue mini series Forever Evil.  The premise is that a crime syndicate has defeated the Justice League (which is DC Comics way of uniting all of its popular super heroes on one team similar to what the Avengers is to Marvel Comics) and is now working to establish its global rule over the Earth.  The twist to this scenario though is these villains are evil alternate versions of the Justice League from a parallel  dimension known as Earth-3 in the DC multiverse that have now arrived to dominate Earth-Prime.  There is Super Woman (Wonder Woman), Ultraman (Superman), Owlman (Batman), Deathstorm (Firestorm), Grid (Cyborg), Johnny Quick (The Flash), and Power Ring (The Green Lantern) who bring together all the super villains of this universe to join them to create an army they call the Secret Society.  As the story starts no one knows if the members of the Justice League are dead, captured or on the run, the world is just brutally made aware that they are now gone and a new era of Forever Evil has begun.  If you missed picking up the monthly issues of Forever Evil that started their run in September of last year and want to know what happens, don't despair because you can catch up with the whole story collected in one hardcover book that goes on sale this September.

Forever Evil was a huge cross-over event for DC Comics that was a primary focus for the publisher between Sept 2013 to May 2014 which was kick started with "Villain Month" last September featuring  the first issue of the Forever Evil mini-series plus numerous villain themed one-shot comic books (where the story is self-contained within that one issue and doesn't continue on into future issues) that had special 3D lenticular motion covers on the front of the title.  Plus there were Forever Evil story arcs contained within several of the DC Comics normal monthly publications including Justice League #24 - 29, Justice League of America #8-13 and Suicide Squad #24-29.  Following the release of the principal Forever Evil mini-series three other tie-in six issue mini-series were introduced titled: A.R.G.U.S., ROGUES REBELLION and ARKHAM WAR.  Note though only the seven issues of the initial Forever Evil mini-series are being reprinted in the hard cover publication being released on September 9, 2014.  CLICK HERE for more information.

Forever Evil does an exceptional job of playing out plots full of twists and pivots featuring the Criminal Syndicate members from the alternate dimension.  Lex Luther's role as planetary savior shows how villains are best when portrayed in shades of grey.  He starts off the series acting despicable and devious threatening to destroy someone who doesn't bend to his will and ends the series actually of all things saving Superman's life.  In between we witness Lex create a Bizaro Superman, kill the original Robin aka Dick Grayson aka Night Wing, and fight in a battle against of all people ... himself.  Forever Evil also leaves us with a cliff hanger as it concludes with Lex Luther gaining a little tidbit of information that could have big implications for future stories down the road...he learns that Batman is Bruce Wayne.  Lex really is the core character in this story and that aspect is one of the most enjoyable parts of reading it.  It is interesting how Luther really uses intellect and financial advantages to overpower people that have super powers.

This comic isn't for children as characters in it die, real deaths too not the ones where people are reincarnated a few issues later (aka Johnny Storm - The Human Torch, Peter Parker - The Amazing Spiderman, or Clark Kent - Superman).  These are graphic and brutal deaths too.  Power Ring has his arm chopped off and than is torched to a crisp.  Johnny Quick is frozen and shattered into pieces.  Another character has his heart heart pulled out of his chest.  One of my favorite scenes though is Lex Luther squashing one bad guy with his boot like a bug.  I'll admit enjoyed seeing evil villains getting taken down in the same vein as enjoying a horror flick but these absolutely aren't images I want my 5 year old twins flipping through.

While I was happy that one of my favorite villains Black Manta had a lot of involvement in the series, I was disappointed that most of the super villains gathered for the Secret Society really were treated as an after thought and not referred back to after the first issue.  It seemed DC Comics really dropped the ball on that aspect of the series.  I collected all of the Villain Month one-shot issues too and have to say that while the 3D covers were very impressive the stories on the inside were all pretty bad.  The focus of this min-series is on the alternate Justice League or as they call themselves the Criminal Syndicate, Lex Luther tackling this threat, and how the heroes of Justice League reappear.  Unfortunately, I have to say that the return of the Justice League is very anti-climatic.  Everyone reading this book obviously knows they are going to bring them back at some point but essentially the story wraps up and suddenly they just reappear.  After reading through this story I would have liked a little more meat and detail to that plot point.  To give DC some credit the super villains are much more focused on in the stories contained in the cross-over publications that I mentioned earlier that aren't being reprinted within this hardcover book though it would have been nice to have seen a greater role for them in the principal mini-series itself.

While I was critical of a few points, the story angles for the Crime Syndicate, Lex Luther ... oh and did I mention Batman and Catwoman happen to play a big part in this story too that help make things interesting but you'll have to read it to find out how...make for a good read.  If you didn't happen to read the original monthly issues of Forever Evil when they were on store comic book stands I'd recommend picking up a copy of the hard cover compilation to peruse.  It is an entertaining romp of a comic book adventure.
