I "SPY" A SECRET AGENT SPOOF FEATURING MELISSA MCCARTHY COMING OUT ON BLU-RAY & DVD

What do you get when a desk-bound CIA analyst volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer in an attempt to prevent a diabolical global disaster?  A hilarious spoof on secret agent movies starring Melissa McCarthy in the blockbuster hit SPY which film critic Leonard Maltin referred to as "her funniest movie yet."  Jason Statham, Jude Law and Rose Byrne join McCarthy in delivering hysterical performances in SPY which earned more than $100 million  during its theatrical run in the United States and a 95% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.com. In anticipation of the movie's release on Blu-ray and DVD on September 29, 2015, A Geek Daddy is sharing a few fun facts about Hollywood's newest Queen of Comedy, Melissa McCarthy, and giving away a SPY Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

Did you know Melissa is a Saluki?  She studied fashion at Southern Illinois University (who are know as the Salukis from their school mascot).  In fact she originally made her way to New York to be a fashion designer but after a fateful night at an open mic night decided to take a shot at being a stand-up comedian instead.  Melissa s still very talented when it comes to fashion though and designed her own gown that the actress/comedian wore to the 2011 Emmys where she won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

While Melissa McCarthy may be best know for her breakout role in the 2011 comedy hit Bridesmaids where she received an Academy Award nomination for her part in the film, she had already been acting for more than a decade at that point having a primary supporting role in the television series Gilmore Girls from 2000-2007 and Samantha Who? from 2007-2009.  She currently stars in the CBS prime time sitcom Mike & Molly where she earned her an Emmy in 2011 for the role of Molly Flynn.  One of my wife's all time favorite TV shows is Gilmore Girls.  For a lot of years she watched reruns of Gilmore Girls every afternoon when returning home from work and we had to make time to watch every new episode whenever they aired.  So for our family Melissa McCarthy will always be Sookie from the Gilmore Girls.

Speaking of her big role in Bridesmaids - other than playing one in the movie, Melissa has been a bridesmaid in real life once - at her sister's wedding.

Melissa has a really sharp memory.  When she has hosted Saturday Night Live she hasn't used cue cards.  Melissa has memorized EVERYTHING for these "live" SNL performances.  Wow! That's impressive!  In fact, she's earned 2 Emmy nominations for hosting SNL (2012 / 2013).

What is the most embarrassing thing that happened to you as a kid?  For Melissa who grew up in the rural farming community of Plainsfield, Illinois it was climbing up into a neighbor's silo and not being able to get back down.  She had to be rescued by a friendly farmer who climbed up, got her unstuck and brought her down to earth.

Since Bridesmaids, Melissa has had roles in the films Spy, The Nines, The Back-up Plan, Life As We Know It, Identity Thief, The Heat, and The Hangover Part III.  She will be starring in the upcoming Ghost Busters remake that is scheduled to be released in theaters across the USA on July 15, 2016.  Ghost Busters is being directed by Paul Feig who also directed McCarthy in the movies SPY, The Heat and Bridesmaids.

Thanks to our friends at Fox Home Entertainment, one lucky A GEEK DADDY blog reader will win a free Blu-rayDVD combo pack of SPY.  Must be a U.S. or Canadian resident over 18 years old and submit one or all of the following entry methods to earn up to 3 entries prior to 11:59 pm EST on Sunday September 27, 2015:

McCarthy is armed and hilarious in this comedy from director Paul Feig. Deskbound CIA analyst Susan Cooper is about to become the world’s newest — and unlikeliest — secret weapon. When her partner (Jude Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, Susan volunteers to go deep undercover and bring down a deadly arms dealer. Loaded with wise-cracking action and adventure, SPY is a mission impossible to resist!

Keep Your Romance Sparked With A Movie Date Night

Do you remember the moment you met the love of your life?  For me an attractive blonde caught my eye standing outside a restaurant where I was headed to meet some friends for dinner as I drove past heading to the public parking lot on the block.  I swear our eyes locked and she gave me a smile.  When I arrived at the restaurant there she was at our table as one of our mutual friends had also invited her to join the group for the evening.  She smiled at me and said "didn't I just see you outside as I was coming in here?"  We dated for two years and this year will be our 11th wedding anniversary.

With busy professional lives and the parenting responsibilities for 6 year old twins it can be hard to make time for one another.  With the cost of babysitters, not much family close by to conveniently watch the kids, and young children that suffer from life threatening food allergies which can make others watching them tricky to put it simply getting away for a date night can be just plain tough. Sometimes though you just need to take a drive to dump the kids off with grandma and grandpa for awhile or put them to bed early to have a date night that may be as simple as watching a movie at home together to keep the stresses of life from tearing your relationship apart and to enjoy being with your special someone.  So while we love having Family Movie Nights it is also important to make time for some Couple Movie Date Nights as well to help keep the spark alive.

Since our Family Movie Nights with our kids are dominated by animated movies and when we go to the theater my wife normally lets me pick out an action or sci-fi flick for us to see when it comes to picking the dvd or digital download we're going to see for our in-home Date Nights I leave that selection to my lovely bride.  She likes the work of Nicholas Sparks and so we've had quite a few Date Night watching movies like A Walk To Remember, The Notebook, The Best of Me, and Safe Haven.  I'm sure there will be a Date Night for us coming up soon because a new Nicholas Sparks movie The Longest Ride will be available soon to bring home with the digital download available to purchase on June 26, 2015 and the Blu-ray/DVD being released on July 14th.

Thanks to our friends at Fox Home Entertainment, one lucky A GEEK DADDY blog reader will win a free DVD/Digital HD Download of The Longest Ride so he or she can enjoy an in-home date night with a spouse or significant other. Must be a U.S. or Canadian resident over 18 years old and submit one or all of the following entry methods to earn up to 3 entries prior to 11:59 pm EST on Friday July 17, 2015:

UPDATE: Congrats to Terry from Missoula Montana who won The Longest Ride on Blu-ray!

Based on the bestselling novel by master storyteller Nicholas Sparks, The Longest Ride centers on the star-crossed love affair between Luke, a former champion bull rider looking to make a comeback, and Sophia, a college student who is about to embark upon her dream job in New York City's art world.  As conflicting paths and ideals test their relationship, Sophia and Luke make an unexpected connection with Ira, whose memories of his own decades-long romance with his beloved wife deeply inspire the young couple.  Spanning generations and two intertwining love stories, The Longest Ride explores the challenges and infinite rewards of enduring love.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 Family Movie Night

My son had been getting into a little bit of trouble in kindergarten being too rambunctious and energetic during class, so I promised him if he could go a few weeks without any problems at school we would have a special movie watching night when How to Train Your Dragon 2 comes out on video.  He's lived up to his end of the bargain being a well behaved little boy at school so I'm sticking to my part of the deal and putting together a special night for the family.

The How to Train Your Dragon toys, television series, and movies are the hot thing that have captured my son's attention and imagination lately...he is so excited to be able to watch How to Train Your Dragon 2 when it comes out on dvd and blu-ray! How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a fantasy film filled with dragons and vikings produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by 20th Century Fox that appeared in theaters this summer and is a sequel to the original How to Trains Your Dragon movie that came out in 2010.  This new movie takes place five years after the events in the first film and features Hiccup and his viking friends as young adults as they meet Valka, Hiccup's long-lost mother, and Drago Bludvist, a madman who want to conquer the world by controlling dragons.

To make our family movie night special we aren't just going to throw some popcorn in the microwave and flip on the movie, we're going to have a Viking Feast while we enjoy the show.  A Geek Daddy is going to put his mastery of grilling to good use and have some fun making up a meal that would even satisfy the appetite of a dragon.  We'll have some Viking Ale (actually a child friendly concoction of butterscotch and ginger ale) grilled Turkey Legs to gnaw on, and some Viking Boats for desert.

VIKING ALE (Non-alcoholic)

Ingredients:

2 parts club soda, cream soda or ginger ale
1 part butterscotch syrup
1/2 tablespoon of butter

Directions:

Combine butterscotch syrup and butter in a microwave-safe glass;

Microwave on high for one minute or until syrup is bubbly and butter is melted;

Stir and cool for a few seconds;

Slowly fill up the remainder of the glass with cream soda or ginger ale for a fizzy treat.

TURKEY LEGS

One of the best part of going to a Renaissance Festival is eating one of those great big turkey legs they grill up for you there.  Hey you can make them at home too with just a little bit of effort on your part.

Ingredients:

**The Meat**
 Turkey Legs - you can buy these drumsticks at many markets

**Brine**
4 quarts of water
1/2 cup of sea salt
1/4 cup brown sugar

**Basting Sauce**
Honey
Barbeque Sauce
Red Wine Vinegar

Directions:

Combine the water, kosher salt and sugar and mix well. Place the turkey drumsticks in the brine so they're completely covered -- if you're making a lot of turkey legs, you may need to double the amount of brine;

Refrigerate your turkey legs, in the brine solution, over night. Remove from the fridge about an hour before cooking, so they can reach room temperature;

When you're ready to cook, remove the turkey legs from the brine and pat them dry. Brush each turkey leg lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Preheat your grill;

Combine the honey, barbeque sauce and red wine vinegar to taste. If you like yours sweeter use more honey. If you like your sauce tangier use more vinegar;

Place the turkey legs on the grill. Brush them with the sauce periodically, and turn them so they grill evenly;

Grill the turkey legs for  thirty minutes, occasionally turning and basting them. When finished wrap the turkey legs in aluminum foil for about fifteen minutes to finish cooking;

Enjoy - feast on these like a viking holding the drumstick in your hand and savoring it as you gnaw at it with your teeth like a medieval warrior.

VIKING BOATS

While you have the grill going here is a quick and tasty desert that is easy to make and kids will love.

Ingredients
Bananas
Marshmallows
Chocolate Chips
Chocolate Syrup
Honey
Aluminum Foil

Directions:

Open a banana but don't completely pull the peel off.  Slice it along its length so it looks like an open hot dog bun;

Place marshmallows, chocolate chips, and chocolate syrup within the slit you've created.  Drizzle some honey over the top of your stuffing.  Then wrap the banana back inside its peel;

Wrap the banana in aluminum foil and place it on a warm grill for ten minutes;

Unwrap the foil and the banana peel.  Ta da! You have a Viking Boat for desert! Tear into the soft warm banana filled with melted marshmallow and chocolate and devour it like a dragon.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be available on Blu-ray and DVD beginning November 11, 2014.  Raise your turkey leg and viking ale with your hands into the air to cheer and toast for a successful adventure and journey be accomplished by Hiccup and his loyal companion Toothless in this family friendly animated feature film.
