THE MARVELS HOME VIDEO RELEASE

Of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows that have debuted on the Disney+ streaming service, the one I thought in advance would be the one I liked least, MS MARVEL, turned out to be my favorite of these superhero series. So, I was GEEKED to see Ms. Marvel team up with Captain Marvel in the motion picture THE MARVELS. If you missed the movie in theaters or are looking forward to seeing it again, Marvel Studios' THE MARVELS will soon be available to add to your home entertainment video collection.

THE MARVELS will be available from all major digital retailers including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Vudu on January 16, 2024 and February 13 on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. The home video release has exclusive bonus content including deleted scenes, a gag reel, behind-the-scenes featurettes and an audio commentary from co-writer/director Nia DaCosta and VFX Supervisor Tara DeMarco. GRAN TURISMO RACES INTO MOVIE THEATERS

Sony Pictures invited me to attend a free screening of their upcoming GRAN TURISMO movie which officially which begins its theatrical run on August 25, 2023. The film is inspired by the true story of a Nissan-sponsored Gran Turismo video game competition that gives its winner the chance to become a real-life professional race car driver. Gran Turismo is a highly detailed auto racing simulator video game for Sony PlayStation consoles that allows players to compete online against one another utilizing accurate recreations of actual cars and tracks. This movie isn't a "video game" movie though it is a bio pic about Jann Mardenborough, who has been involved in both triumphs and tragedies driving cars on race tracks.

The Gran Turismo movie is a nice underdog story that will rev up your spirits. Rudy with race cars! It earned a Geek Daddy nod of approval because you don't need to be a gamer or gearhead to enjoy cheering on the movie's hero to the film's finish line. Taking in Grand Turismo's high octane race scenes are an exciting way to enjoy the last stretch of the summer season. 

Veteran actors David Harbour (Stranger Things) and Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean) compliment the performance of the movie's youthful central figure Jann Mardenborough played by Archie Madekwe (Midsommar). Harbour and Bloom do an excellent job of creating for audiences a sense of drama that creates an element of intensity for the challenges that Madekwe's character must overcome. I realized as the end credits began rolling that I had become so immersed in the action of the show that I'd bought into feeling as if these actors were actually the people they were portraying and their scenes were real events rather than Hollywood reenactments. I became invested in wanting to see Madekwe's character succeed with the film having the air of a reality show documenting his career progression rather than actors going through the lines of a script. 

I also learned in the end credits that Jann Mardenborough served as a stunt driver for Grand Turismo. The credits include pictures of him with various cast members. That really reinforced the true story aspect of this film in a nice way.

This film is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association for the following reasons: intense action and some strong language. Gran Turismo has a runtime of 2 hours and fifteen minutes. For more information about this motion picture visit www.granturismo.movie

UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT

Lionsgate sent some swag my way to highlight that Nicolas Cage's new film THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT will be in movie theaters this weekend. Pedro Pascal who has been playing the Mandalorian in the hit Disney+ streaming series joins Cage in this action/comedy "buddy" movie that I'm really looking forward to seeing. I've been intrigued about watching the first two Kingsman action-comedy films about a fictional British secret service agency based upon my affinity for James Bond, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen stories. Up to now I haven't gotten around to watching the first two films yet; but I guess that works out because this weekend I'll be streaming on Movies Anywhere the third in the series which is a prequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) and Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017). RON'S GONE WRONG

We had an enjoyable family movie night watching the animated flick Ron's Gone Wrong and my 12-year-old twins especially appreciated the film because they found it very relatable to where they are in their lives right now as middle schoolers. The movie's parody of a technology company very similar to Facebook that launches a product with the goal of promoting people abandoning in-person interactions to instead socially connect with others solely through technology rings true in both a funny and also somewhat scary retrospect of today's times. Why talk to someone face-to-face when you can do it instead through an app, or in the case of this movie a robot, is a central theme of this comedy which explores if technology may be devolving our humanity rather than accomplishing goals of actually bring people closer together. While this may seem a heavy topic, Ron's Gone Wrong addresses it in a humorous way through a heart-warming story.

Middle school can be a tough time where people are changing both with puberty and in developing a sense of who they are with their personality and place in the world. My own kids are struggling with being bullied and finding themselves in uncomfortable social situations navigating through school hallways during the tween and early teen years of middle school. Many of the troubles the main character faces in the movie are similar to circumstances my son and daughter have also faced when it comes to navigating friendships in middle school. They both expressed while we watched Ron's Gone Wrong how much they appreciated how the scenarios in the film hit home with struggles they themselves personally are going through and were appreciative of the inspiring positive messages portrayed in the story. Plus, they were laughing throughout the movie; so this comedy hits the mark when it comes to being funny based upon all the giggles floating around the room. 

In Ron's Gone Wrong, things go hilariously awry when Barney, a socially awkward middle schooler, receives a malfunctioning, digitally connected device that’s supposed to be his “best friend out of the box.” In this action-packed animated story set against the backdrop of the social media age, a boy and his robot discover the wonderful messiness of true friendship. Ron's Gone Wrong is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America and has a run-time of 1 hour and 47 minutes.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this movie because it didn't get a lot of buzz. When hitting play to watch it we didn't have a lot of expectations. I was pleasantly surprised with Ron's Gone Wrong being a totally enjoyable family-friendly flick full of laughs and characters that are developed so the audience cares about them and is invested in the film's conclusion. Ron's Gone Wrong captured the whole family's attention throughout the film making for a great movie night selection.

While the critics didn't provide rave reviews of Ron's Gone Wrong, audiences seem to agree with this Geek Daddy as the film has been certified FRESH on Rotten Tomatoes with a 94% audience approval score. Taking into consideration all the laughs and positive messages incorporated into this family-friendly adventure/comedy, Ron's Gone Wrong has absolutely earned a Geek Daddy nod of approval. Watching it made for a great movie night with the wife and kids!

DC ANIMATED MOVIE INJUSTICE

Inspired by Injustice: Gods Among Us, NetherRealm Studios’ popular video game, and the best-selling DC graphic novel based on the video game, Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year One by Tom Taylor, comes the newly released animated film INJUSTICE. This animated movie transports viewers to an alternate world within  the DC multi-verse of storytelling that has gone mad with superheroes taking sides and battling amongst each other for control of the Earth.

The Joker has duped Superman into killing Lois Lane, sending the Man of Steel on a deadly rampage. Unhinged, Superman decides to take control of the Earth for humanity’s own good. Determined to stop him, Batman creates a team of like-minded, freedom-fighting heroes. But when Super Heroes go to war, can the world survive?

While it is a cartoon this animated film isn't meant for for children to view. Like many other releases in the DC Animated Movie series INJUSTICE is rated R for bloody violence. With scenes like the clip below that shows Superman killing Joker by pulling his heart out of the villain's chest this isn't the cheery Super Friends cartoons that are often identified with the animation of DC Comics stories. Be prepared for epic, violent brawls in this movie. Parents may want to have their kids sit this one out but it is very worth viewing for superhero fans in their teenage and adult years.

INJUSTICE is available in a 4K Ultra HD pack that also includes the movie on Blu-Ray and Digital and a Blu-ray + Digital combo pack. I am geeked to watch INJUSTICE! DC Animated Movies have earned a Geek Daddy nod of approval for their adaption of stories that provide a comic book feel to the animation presented on screen in these films. I've enjoyed playing the video game and reading the comics this movie is inspired by and am really excited to view this film now. Who else is looking forward to taking in this superhero battle royal in INJUSTICE?!

BATMAN THE LONG HALLOWEEN MOVIE

One of the best Batman stories of all time has been adapted into an animated motion picture. Inspired by the iconic mid-1990s graphic novel created by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN PART I begins as a brutal murder on Halloween prompts Gotham’s young vigilante, the Batman, to form a pact with the city’s only two uncorrupt lawmen (Police Captain James Gordan and District Attorney Harvey Dent) in order to take down The Roman, head of the notorious and powerful Falcone Crime Family. But when more deaths occur on Thanksgiving and Christmas, it becomes clear that, instead of ordinary gang violence, they’re also dealing with a serial killer – the identity of whom, with each conflicting clue, grows harder to discern. Few cases have ever tested the wits of the World’s Greatest Detective like the mystery behind the Holiday Killer.

This is such an epic story that it is being divided into two DC Universe movies. Part I is available now on Blu-ray and Digital. Part II is being released on July 27, 2021 for Blu-ray and Digital. Both Part I & Part II will be released in 2022 as one movie available on 4K Ultra HD. 

These movies are sure to be a fan-tastic addition to your home entertainment video library for anyone who appreciates DC Comics super hero adventures. I can't wait to see how this animated movie compares to the print story. While Warner Bros. live-action DC films have been a bit of a flop the studio has done a tremendous job with its direct to video cartoon style superhero universe of movies. So I'm really geeked to watch BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN PART I.

BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN PART I has a runtime of 85 minutes and the Motion Picture Association of America has rated it PG-13 for violence, bloody images, language and some smoking. The DC Movie Universe has demonstrated with its outstanding lineup of animated films that cartoons aren't just for children producing flicks aimed for teenage and adult audiences that mature comic book fans crave. This movie is sure to show the gritty and violent side of the Dark Knight's vigilantism.

TOM AND JERRY THE MOVIE

This week's family movie night selection is TOM & JERRY THE MOVIE. A regular fixture in after-school cartoon lineups on tv when I was a kid, my own children aren't that familiar with the cat and moue hijinks of Tom and Jerry. So this movie provides some nostalgia for this dad and an intriguing new experience for my son and daughter so to provide an evening of family fun.

One of the most beloved rivalries in history is reignited when Jerry moves into New York City's finest hotel on the eve of "the wedding of the century," forcing the event's desperate planner to bring in a tom cat in hopes of getting rid of the pesky mouse. The ensuing cat and mouse battle between Tom and Jerry threatens to destroy the event planner's career, the wedding and possibly even the hotel itself. But soon, an even bigger problem arises: a diabolically ambitious hotel manager who is threatened by the event planner and wants to take her down using Tom and Jerry's feud against her.

Rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for cartoon violence and rude humor, TOM & JERRY THE MOVIE is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. Bonus content on the home entertainment release of the movie includes a gag reel, deleted scenes and featurettes on the making of this animated / live action motion picture hybrid. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 3

A surprise delivery arrived at our house! A box of HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON gifts from DreamWorks Animation for our family to enjoy as we excitedly await the upcoming release of the final movie in the this trilogy of animated films. THE HIDDEN WORLD flies into theaters across the United States for a February 22 opening weekend.

The HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON saga has been some of my son's favorite movies. The first movie was a great family film to take him to as a preschooler and he had to have us find him a Toothless stuffed dragon because the boy was so in awe of the Night Fury. As a kindergartner, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON action figures were at the top of his Christmas List to Saint Nick after seeing the second movie and his grandma knitted him a Toothless quilt that still covers his bed.

We were getting nervous that he might outgrow animated movies like these before the final chapter came out.  Fortunately, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 3: THE HIDDEN WORLD is being released while he is still young enough to have the same youthful enthusiasm he had for the other films. So you know we are going to be going to see the movie its opening weekend!

My son is really excited to see what happens to Toothless, Hiccup, and the rest of the Vikings and dragons from the Isle of Berk. Have to admit being glad that my son is still so enthused about going to see the final film in the HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON trilogy of movies because I really want to see how it all ends too. These movies have really provided us with some wonderful family moments as we've enjoyed them together during my kids' childhoods.
