AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM

aquaman and the lost kingdom

Thank you to Warner Bros Pictures for sending me a free AQUAMAN swag pack to rev up my excitement about the new superhero film hitting movie theaters this Christmas weekend. Who is ready to dive into a new Aquaman adventure?! AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM is being released December 22, 2023.

Warner Bros Pictures hooked me up with some great gear to plunge into this movie experience. I was GEEKED to receive a cool jacket along with a warm hat to wear out when heading out in the winter weather to see this DC Comics inspired superhero movie. Also unboxed were some impressive swag including a comic book, ice cube tray, handwarmers, and a YETI. This was an AWESOME package to unbox!

After failing to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta wields the power of the mythic Black Trident to unleash an ancient and malevolent force. Hoping to end his reign of terror, Aquaman forges an unlikely alliance with his brother, Orm, the former king of Atlantis. Setting aside their differences, they join forces to protect their kingdom and save the world from irreversible destruction. AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America [MPAA] for sci-fi violence and some language.

All returning to the roles they originated, Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry/Aquaman, now balancing his duties as both the King of Atlantis and a new father; Patrick Wilson is Orm, Aquaman’s half-brother and his nemesis, who must now step into a new role as his brother’s reluctant ally; Amber Heard is Mera, Atlantis’ Queen and mother of the heir to the throne; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Black Manta, committed more than ever to avenge his father’s death by destroying Aquaman, his family and Atlantis; and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, a fierce leader and mother with the heart of a warrior. Also reprising their roles are Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus and Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin.

Are you planning a movie theater outing this holiday weekend to see AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM?

ZOMBICIDE UNDEAD OR ALIVE UNBOXING

zombicide undead or alive kickstarter

Giddy-up! My crate of goodies from participating in the CMON Games Zombicide: Undead or Alive Kickstarter campaign has arrived. A zombie apocalypse has infested within the Wild West and it is up to you to help a group of survivors get out of Dodge in this new variation of the Zombicide tabletop game. By purchasing Zombicide: Undead or Alive through Kickstarter rather than retail not only did I lasso the core game, but I also wrangled an exclusive Dead West expansion kit that includes 79 extra character pieces to enhance game play. Plus, I unboxed a few extra goodies to add to the Wild West theme of the Undead or Alive Zombicide adventures.

In this standalone game, instead of trying to survive a zombie infestation of a modern day city, players are transported back to the American West of the 1800s as they attempt to survive swarms of the undead. Carried by infected travelers aboard trains, the plague quickly spread across the Wild West. Horses became meals to the zombie hoard causing the surviving people to be isolated in overwhelmed frontier towns.

Zombicide: Undead or Alive is a cooperative game where players work together to face scenarios involving them confronting and escaping a zombie menace. Players make their own decisions to utilize weapons and abilities while the zombies are controlled by the game itself using simple rules and a deck of cards. This tabletop game can be played for 1 - 6 players and is recommended for those aged 14+.

The Undead or Alive core box includes 14 characters that players can choose to play as divided up as four different classes: Brawler, Faithful, Gunslinger and Townsfolk.

Brawlers are hand-to-hand specialists who use melee weapons to bring down zombies. Being tough as nails, they can also endure more wounds than other survivors.

Faithfuls use their faith and conviction to paralyze zombies and destroy zombie spawning points.

Gunslingers are able to unload a heap of lead in a split second by fanning a hoard with pistol fire. This ability can devastate large bands of zombies at short range.

Townsfolk know where to search for supplies and find everything needed for killing zombies.

zombicide undead or alive

Also included in the core box are 64 zombie game pieces to utilize in the game. There are four types of zombies players will encounter in Undead or Alive: Walkers, Brutes, Runners and Abominations.

Walkers slowly trudge towards you in a deadly mob. Beware that though they aren't speedy, walkers can quickly overwhelm you.

Brutes are hard to kill making them nasty menaces. Watch out because they are often shielding other zombies hiding behind them!

Runners often catch survivors by surprise. You don't think of zombies as fast but this type is quick. They move twice as fast as other zombies!

Abominations can be the worst nightmare of survivors, plus they aren't always zombies! Sometimes abominations are mutated monsters or worse. These are the toughest, ugliest adversaries your posse will come across. They can only be hurt by dynamite. Moreover, their mere presence stirs the dead to come to an abomination's aid. As soon as one enters the game board, special places called Abomination Spawn Zones become active causing even more zombies come after players.

zombicide undead or alive

There are ten missions included with the core box that can be played with included character pieces and twelve double-sided game board tiles. Players can also just create their own random scenarios as well utilizing the Zombicide A.I. system and their own tile layouts. Click here to check out the rule book for yourself.

zombicide undead or alive

By participating in the Kickstarter campaign, I also received an exclusive Dead West expansion kit that includes 79 more character pieces adding more survivors and zombies with their own unique quirks and qualities to enhance gameplay. This is particularly nice for adding new challenges to the game with its inclusion of some impressive abominations that range from a cactus monster to a wendigo. The expansion kit also includes some outlaws that can provide some extra firepower to your team of survivors including Butch Cassidy, Billy the Kid and Jesse James. For those who missed the Kickstarter campaign it is possible to find Dead West in the secondary market for an elevated price to what it was originally sold for.

In addition to the Dead West expansion pack, I also picked up a few other exclusive content goodies in the Kickstarter campaign. I harnessed a Deadstock Pack that includes mutated abominations of a buffalo, grizzly bear and longhorn cow for survivors to battle. I also dug up a Long Dead Walkers Pack that has skeleton versions of the zombies from the core box. This game can be more than just a zombie encounter with a variety of different monsters led by the Great Trickster Spirit available through Kickstarter exclusives to fight against players. The quality of exclusives are one of the main hooks for me when it comes to joining a Kickstarter campaign and these had me biting at the Zombicide: Undead or Alive one.

Keep an eye out for more updates as I delve into the contents of Zombicide: Undead or Alive and begin playing the game. The core box is available now at retail. For more information about this and other games in the franchise, head over to zombicide.com

NETFLIX DISENCHANTMENT SEASON 2

netflix disenchantment

I've been a fan of Matt Groening's work since my high school days reading his Life is Hell cartoons books. Since then he's gone on to create The Simpsons and Futurama tv shows which have gone to eclipse his original comic strips in popularity. Now Groening has brought his trademark illustration style and sarcasm to Netflix with the animated series DISENCHANTMENT. This Dungeon & Dragon themed spoof for adult audiences is full of modern day satire set in a fairytale setting following the misadventures of the tomboy Princess Bean, her personal demon Luci and a lil sidekick named Elfo.

Season One told Part 1 (2018) & Part 2 (2019) of the DISENCHANTMENT tale in two equally divided 10 episode story arcs. These farcical adventures through a fantasy realm show the evolution of a care free princess rebelling against her nobility to someone confronting life versus death decisions that are part of an evolving conflict of good versus evil. This story's princess continues to grow into her power and own her destiny in Part 3 (2021) which just debuted this January on Netflix which contains the first 10 episodes of Season Two of DISENCHANTMENT.

Thanks to Netflix for sending this dad blogger a box of goodies to make my binge watching the new Season 2 episodes of  Matt Groening's DISENCHANTMENT extra fun:

I'm geeked to view Part 3 of the DISENCHANTMENT escapades! I have a drinking horn full of Hofbrau and my own personal demon on my shoulder so lets get to streaming these new episodes on Netflix. Huzzah!!!

SWEET SUITE AT HOME

toy insider
The other day we participated in a virtual toy expo hosted by The Toy Insider. I met with industry reps through online chats learning about what hot new products brands will be having hit store shelves soon while my kids provided some live video demonstrations of some fun new games and toys from our friends at Play Monster. Sweet Suite @ Home was a fun evening for the whole family and we learned about a lot of interesting stuff that we will be sharing with you on ageekdaddy.com over the next few months.

Plus we were sent a big box of swag full of toy samples that just arrived! Time for an unboxing! Let's see what is inside:

So what were some of the favorite things my daughter found inside our Sweet Suite @ Home swag box?

BLIND BAG FIGURES
playmobile

My daughter LOVES Calico Critters and was excited that one of these figures was included in our toy samples. The brand will be releasing blind bags that each contain a cute animal figurine with a camping motif this Fall. Playmobile will also be releasing a blind bag assortment of characters from Scooby Doo cartoons that are a hit with my kids! Blind bags show you the characters that could be inside on the outside of the packaging but you don't know exactly what toy is inside until it is opened up. These mystery packs have been a popular trend with the toy industry in recent years and the sense of mystery and excitement in opening up bling bags provides some extra fun in these toys for kids.

SHOULDERKINS
shoulderkins

My daughter has been walking around the house with a sea lion on her shoulder. She thinks Shoulderkins from Aurora are adorable! These cute plush sit on kids shoulders and stay on thanks to a magnet that slips under a shirt to keep the toy attached to your body. In addition to Sammy the Sea Lion there are also a bunny, octopus, unicorn, giraffe, tiger, turtle, and flamingo to choose from in this stuffed animal collection.

POKEMON BATTLE ACADEMY
pokemon

My kids were most excited about this coming in the Sweet Suite @ Home swag box. They collect Pokemon trading cards but really don't know how to play the game. Pokeman Battle Academy uses a board game to teach people how to play the card deck building game. You can just have fun with this table top game or use it as an entryway to playing the card game. Pokemon Battle Academy looks to be a fun way to spend a family game night!

Check out our YouTube unboxing video to see what else arrived in the Sweet Suite @ Home Swag box. Stay tuned for more updates as this dad blogger continues to provide updates on fun games and toys my kids, and this kid at heart, enjoy playing with.

SELL YOUR SOUL TO SIDESHOW

Sold My Soul
Arrived home the other day to find a big box waiting for me at my doorstep. It was marked Hot Toys Deluxe and had a Sideshow Collectibles mailing label on it. Has to be my prize from participating in their SELL YOUR SOUL TO SIDESHOW contest last Halloween. Can't wait to rip into this box and see what is inside!

Sideshow Collectibles is a distributer of highly detailed action figures, statues, models and prop replicas revolving around superhero and science fiction comic book, television and movie characters. From diecast models of the spaceships in Battlestar Galactica to life-sized mannequins of Star Wars characters ranging from Boba Fett to Yoda, they have an impressive variety of products for people to geek out over. For the last few years has sponsored a fun Halloween promotion that encourages participants to let their geek side show for a chance to win a prize.

In SELL YOUR SOUL TO SIDESHOW, people are encouraged to submit goofy/geeky things they'll do to win a prize during the Halloween season. Sideshow picks some of their favorite submitted ideas to participate in the contest. Past entrants have included a man dressing up as Indiana Jones going to a hardware store to ask a store clerk what aisle the snake repellant was in and a guy wearing a Princess Leia hair buns headband going to Cinnabon and trying to order blue milk. Entrants must video record their prank and submit it back to Sideshow Collectibles within 48 hours of being selected. My monster of an idea was picked for their 2019 Halloween contest and my prize has just arrived!

I sold my soul by dressing up as Godzilla and raking the leaves in my front yard into the shape of the Sideshow Collectibles logo. This was no easy feat as freezing rain was pouring down in our neighborhood throughout the limited time I was given to do my stunt. So I got quite wet but the mission was accomplished! And I caught the attention of my neighbors with quite a few of them peeking out through their curtains or walking outside on their front porches to take in the spectacle. After completing the logo, I did a Godzilla stomp and tail thrashing doing a Monster Mash in my front yard. No hiding it now that I'm the geek daddy in the neighborhood!

The prize I requested wasn't in stock yet and Sideshow Collectibles was taking pre-orders on it. So that is why it took awhile to be delivered. But it was worth the wait! They are selling this thing for more than $600!

I sold my soul and let my geek side show for a Hot Toys Quarter Scale Deluxe Version Iron Man Mark III. It is a 19 inch replica of the Mark III suit shown in the first Iron Man movie from Marvel Studios. It is a larger sized reproduction of the very first Iron Man sixth scale action figure from Hot Toys that was released shortly after the movies release. It features over 40 points of articulation and LED special effects that includes a light up Arc Reactor in its chest, eyes in the helmet and repulsers each hand. AWESOME!

quarter scale iron man figure
In addition to the quarter scale figure, a deluxe stand is included to place it on. The stand has a gritty mechanical diorama look to it. There is an Iron Monger arm attached and nameplate with the movie logo on the front. The stand also has LED effects. An Arc Reactor lights up over the name plate. Another light shines up from the launch pad illuminating the Mark III armor. Plus blue lights circle the bottom of the launch pad giving a glow to the Iron Monger arm, Arc reactor, and nameplate. This display base is only available with the deluxe version of this Quarter Scale Iron Man Mark III action figure from Hot Toys.

Deluxe Quarter Scale Iron Man Mark III

My son who was helping me take unboxing pictures and video was so excited when I pulled out this Iron Man toy! He didn't know what was inside the box until I pulled out the Mark III figure. We were both geeking out as we began putting together this really big Iron Man that is almost two feet tall!

Iron Man

The figure's intricate design is based on Tony Stark’s third suit of armor; Mark III was the first rendition of ingeniously engineered battle suit inspired by Tony’s Hotrod red and gold color scheme. This quarter scale collectible figure stands approximately 19 inches tall, featuring a newly painted Tony Stark helmeted head sculpt, interchangeable helmeted head with LED light-up eyes, LED lights shine through various areas of armor, masterfully applied metallic red and gold colors on armor, articulated armor parts to reveal interior mechanical design or hidden weapons, and interchangeable battle damaged chest and shoulder armor!

The Tony Stark face on one of the alternate head pieces is so lifelike that when my son aimed my Galaxy S8 phone camera at it the AR emoji features began to automatically activate as if he was taking photos of a real person. He had some fun playing around with this feature and the Tony Stark sculpt. Tony with a top hat. Tony with a dog face. And so on!

Tony Stark
dad blog

Some other features include being able to switch out the chest plate for a battle damaged look. Missile launchers like the ones used in the Iron Man movie emerge from the figures shoulders and wrist. Another wrist can be transformed into a shield. There are also articulated air flaps on the backside of the armor. Lots of features to discover that I haven't fully examined out of an overabundance of caution in not wanting to break anything while playing around with it.

This Quarter Scale Iron Man Mark III from Hot Toys is impressive. Most impressive! The only downside is that it is made of plastic instead of diecast. Many of the newer Hot Toys Iron Man sixth scale figures are now made of metal diecast. Of course the sixth scale version this quarter scale one is based on was made of plastic so it is duplicating the original. That being said this Iron Man is going to look amazing on display in my office and I have a feeling it is eventually going to be making its way into my son's bedroom.

Iron Man

It really was worth going on a monster rampage in my front yard to win it! Head over to sideshow.com to check out their current products and promotions. They have great stuff for decorating man caves, home theaters, game rooms, offices, kids bedrooms and more!

If you purchase a Hot Toys Quarter Scale Iron Man Mark III from Sideshow Collectibles utilizing a link in this post ageekdaddy.com will receive a small commission at no additional expense to you. This dad blogger appreciates your support! Affiliate links help us with the expenses to keep this blog up and running so it has options for travel and product reviews not dependent on brand marketing agendas.

A Geek Daddy received the featured products for promotional consideration

Who doesn't love a Happy Meal?! This year marks the 40th anniversary of the debut of Happy Meals at McDonalds. To celebrate the occasion, beginning November 7, 2019 while supplies last you can get limited-edition Surprise Happy Meals featuring fan-favorite throwback toys from the past four decades at restaurants worldwide. Don't miss out on picking up some of these classic Happy Meal toys because one they are gone … they're gone! Thanks McDonalds for sending us a box of these Surprise Happy Meal toys for this dad blogger to unbox.

The very first edition of the these children's meals was called the Circus Wagon Happy Meal which became available nationally in the United States in 1979. Happy Meals in their first years featured decorative boxes with a variety of themes and included prizes such as a spinning top or an eraser in the image of a McDonaldland character. These eventually evolved into the iconic red boxes with golden arches for a handle that contains a collectible toy that we are all familiar with now.

Over the years Happy Meal toys have been associated with promoting movies, toy lines, and McDonalds' mascots. My favorite toys have to have been the Looney Tunes character action figures dressed up as DC Comics super heroes that were a promotion in the mid-90s. I still have one of these, the Tasmanian Devil dressed up as The Flash, which stays on my office desk as a cherished keepsake. Do you have a favorite McDonalds Happy Meal toy?

GOLDFISH SWIM SCHOOL WATER SAFETY MONTH

From my family's own experience at Goldfish Swim School we know that they emphasize water safety training with their students throughout the year.  With summer approaching and knowing that is a prime time for children to be spending time in and around the water, Goldfish Swim School puts an extra emphasis on safety during the month of May.  They want to make sure that as their students are enjoying themselves at beaches, pools and water parks, the kids are being safe as well as having fun.

In fact, last summer when my son got in an over his head situation while at a water park that could have quickly become dangerous, he used the water safety tips he had worked on during lessons at Goldfish Swim School to keep his cool.  He didn't panic, treaded water, looked for the closest point to get out of the water, and got the attention of a lifeguard to help him. You can read more about how Goldfish Swim School saved the day in this past ageekdaddy.com blog post.

Did you know … According to the CDC (United States' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, DROWNING is the leading cause of injury death to children ages one to four and the second leading cause after motor vehicle injuries for children between the ages of five and fifteen.

Being safe around water is an important issue for every family.  All kids need to have the knowledge and skills to be safe! Goldfish Swim School surprised my family with a Water Safety Month themed box of goodies to highlight the importance of this topic as we head into the Memorial Day weekend that kicks off summer activities for many families across the country. Check out what we unboxed:

WATER SAFETY TIPS

Here are some tips based upon the items we discovered inside our Goldfish Swim School Water Safety Month box:

Make water and swim safety a FUN, FAMILY activity! Goldfish uses the Science of SwimPlay® in lessons to capture children's attention because they learn best through play.  My kids love how Bubble's the goldfish mascot! This cheerful goldfish provides a youthful vibe to the swim school and helps make communications with children relatable to them. The twins were delighted to get a Bubbles plush in our Water Safety Month box.

In addition to Bubbles, Goldfish also uses toys, prizes, and other tools to engage kids and make their learn-to-swim experience FUN!  The plastic Bubbles toys included in our box are always a hit with my kids.  Different styles are given out during the year tied to the swim school's theme of the month as a reward for children doing well in class.  These toys are great for playing with in a bathtub or pool and our puppy Penny has also taken a liking to chewing on these when she can steal one from the kids. Stickers and temporary tattoos like the ones also shown in the unboxing video are also given out to students.  There is a different type of reward given out each week of the month to help keep students excited about regularly attending swim class.

Any time kids are around water, designate a "water watcher" who will avoid cell phones, conversations, magazines and anything else that might distract the adult from watching swimming children. Often times children who drown are actually being supervised by an adult.  A water watcher lanyard is one way to remind people about the importance of this responsibility.

An illustrated booklet that highlights Goldfish Swim School's W.A.T.E.R. safety rules was also included in the box.   It is a great way to reinforce these water safety messages with children at home:

W -- WEAR your life jacket

A -- ACT to get help for someone in trouble.  Don't go in yourself to try and help.

T -- TAKE swim lessons.

E -- EDUCATE yourself on swim safety skills

R -- RESPECT. Play it cool and follow the rules!

Goldfish Swim School instills these W.A.T.E.R. safety rules with their students during swimming lessons, at special pool events like WATER SAFETY DAY, and through presentations for churches, civic organizations, libraries, youth groups and schools.  Contact your local Goldfish Swim School to find out about these free presentations.

According to the American Red Cross, the number one thing that parents can do to keep kids safe in the water is to enroll them in swim lessons.  Goldfish offers their trademark perpetual swimming lessons as well as special 1-week Jump Start Clinics during the summer. Jump Start Clinics include four or five consecutive days* of 30-minute swim lessons that focus on everything from teaching the fundamentals of water safety to fine-tuning stroke technique. These clinics are specially designed for families looking to get their kids water-ready in a hurry compared to the ongoing perpetual lessons that are for 30 minutes once per week that go on indefinitely through the year.
