Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial

Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial

Did you know there is a monument to Michigan's police officers and firefighters that have died in the line of duty? The Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial is located at a meadow situated near the intersection of Telegraph Road and County Center Drive in the City of Pontiac. More than 800 names are inscribed on granite walls with a bronze statue of a grief stricken police officer and firefighter providing vigil over the monument.

While initially dedicated to those from the state who made the ultimate sacrifice in public service, the Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial has also added a tribute to the heroes and victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that impacted not just New York City, Shanksville PA, and Washington DC but the Nation as a whole. Relics from each of these sites are encapsulated with informational placards about what occurred on 9/11. Did you know the fighter planes sent to intercept the highjacked Flight 93 that eventually crashed in Shanksville due to passengers fighting the terrorists were from Metro Detroit's Selfridge Air Force Base? A sad connection to that horrible day!

Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial

Additionally, as the site is part of the Oakland County government complex, a monument the County's fallen soldiers has also been incorporated into the Memorial.

MICHIGAN RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL PREVIEW PARTY

2022 Michigan Renaissance Festival

Soon the grounds of the Michigan Renaissance Festival will be filled with the sounds of merriment and ruckus as its 2022 season commences. This year's Mich Ren Fest takes place on weekends from August 20 through October 2. I appreciate being invited to the medieval village of Hollygrove for a preview party of this year's festivities at its Blackstone Castle.

The Michigan Renaissance Festival is known for its demonstrations of sword play and jousting, musical performances and feasts. We were treated to samples of all of these at this year's preview party. It was an entertaining evening with delicious food to enjoy. I was even knighted to Hollygrove's Order of Chivalry!

For information on how you can join in on this year's activities, visit MichRenFest.com. This annual Metro Detroit event is located at 12600 Dixie Highway near Holly in northern Oakland County. I always enjoy spending an afternoon cheering on the participants of the jousting tournament while snacking on turkey legs and pickles. An exciting way to escape from reality for a day by traveling back in time to another era. Huzzah!

SALIVA COVID TESTS

covid testing

Need to get tested for Covid-19 and would prefer not to have a swab jammed up your nasal cavity? A reliable saliva-based test is now available for Metro Detroit residents. This COVID saliva test is available at the Birmingham Royal Oak Medical Group located adjacent to the Meijer in the City of Royal Oak. There is no charge for the test as it is covered under the Cares Act for those with or without insurance. However, an office visit is needed to order the test.

“We are offering this brand new COVID test by appointment only and same day appointments are available,” says Dr. Mumtaz George. “We’re asking people who have even the slightest doubt to protect themselves and those around them by calling our office to schedule this new non-intrusive COVID test. Due to high demand, we’re expecting a large amount of calls. If we do not answer the phone right away, please leave a message and our scheduler will return the call promptly.”

covid saliva testing

The test is simple to do and alleviates the discomfort of the nasal swab test. All one needs to do is make an appointment and provide a saliva sample, which can be done in the comfort of one’s own vehicle in the clinic’s parking lot. The new saliva test is over 99% accurate and the results can be found on the online portal in 24 to 48 hours. For more information call 248/288-9500 or visit birminghamroyaloakmedical.com

Clinic hours are Monday-Friday 9 am to 5 pm, Saturday 10 am to 3 pm, and Sunday Noon to 3 pm. This is just down the street from my house so if I need a Covid test this is how I'll get it done for sure. Wasn't looking forward to possibly having one of those swab sticks jammed up my nose. This seems like a way more convenient and comfortable way to get it done.

A HAUNTING IN HOLLYGROVE

Michigan Renaissance Festival

Normally during the summer and fall months the fairgrounds in rural Oakland County, Michigan known as Hollygrove which is home to the Michigan Renaissance Festival are filled with the sounds of merriment and music. It has been quiet this year though as the festivities were cancelled due to the pandemic. That was until recently when rumors started circling among local townsfolk of eerie sights and sounds emerging from Hollygrove after dark as Halloween approached. Whoa!

My inner Ghostbuster couldn't resist going to see if there were any spooky spirits haunting Hollygrove. If my family couldn't enjoy cheering on the jousters and laughing at the jesters at this year's Michigan Renaissance Festival, maybe we could have ourselves some Halloween fun in the Village of Hollygrove. So off we went looking for a terror-ific time!

From now through Halloween, adventure seekers can make their way through a 3/4 mile maze of illuminations and decorations trekking through the twists and turns of the Michigan Renaissance Festival grounds. Are you brave enough to walk these paths after dark when monsters may be lurking in the buildings and forest around you? If so a limited number of guided tour time slots are available on October 17-18, 22-25, and 29-31.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $17.95 for children (5-12 years old). Social distancing guidelines will be recommend and masks required during this primarily outdoor event. Time slots will be restricted to 40 people maximum. So make reservations and purchase tickets online at halloweeninholly.com in advance to make sure you get a chance to experience A Haunting in Hollygrove.

Haunting in Hollygrove

Thanks to the Michigan Renaissance Festival for inviting this dad blogger and his family out as their guests and letting us be some of the first people to experience this Halloween event. With us staying close to home for most of this year we needed to get out for an adventure. We had a spook-tacular good time!

TREERUNNER ADVENTURE PARK OU

rope course
A Geek Daddy received complimentary passes for this review
Soar through a forest of trees as you climb and zip line your way through aerial obstacle courses at the TREERUNNER ADVENTURE PARK in Rochester Hills, Michigan.  Located near the intersection of Walton and Adams roads on the campus of Oakland University, you'll feel like an American Ninja Warrior as you test your mettle on a variety of exciting elevated rope courses. Your adrenaline is sure to get pumping tackling more than 60 exciting obstacles and zip lines at TreeRunner Adventure Park OU.

Looking to get your kids and their friends away from television and video games for some outdoor fun? TreeRunner Adventure Park is a great way to get children and teens geeked about going outside for some entertainment and exercise. Open to children 7 years and older, TreeRunner Adventure Park is a great spot for families to play together. With three difficulty levels, and five different courses, moms and dads will have as much fun as their kids in exploring the TreeRunner Adventure Park at Oakland University.

My ten year old twins and I spent an afternoon having a blast at TreeRunner Adventure Park OU! We started off doing the basic course which is about seven feet off the ground but as we progressed to increasingly more challenging courses eventually found ourselves three stories up in the canopy of the aerial adventure park's trees. We had such a great time my son and daughter excitedly asked me as we were leaving when we could come back again.

No special skills or experience is required to engage in this activity and have a good time. After spending about fifteen minutes participating in a training orientation and a few moments on the course, my kids had it down when it came to climbing and zip lining through the courses. Safety is a priority at TreeRunner Adventure Parks (they also have locations in Grand Rapids and West Bloomfield) with every participant wearing mandated harnesses which are doubly secured to safety cables using an “always locked on” system of interlocking safety clips. When it comes to these aerial obstacle courses the only thing to fear really is fear itself.

Because TreeRunner Adventure Park had my kids enjoying being active outside, it has earned A Geek Daddy nod of approval. I also liked that it provides an opportunity for families to have fun together doing something out of the ordinary. It also gets a positive nod because TreeRunner Adventure Park is a place we are likely to be visiting over and over again based upon how much my family enjoyed our outing there.

Cranbrook Institute of Science

We didn't make any plans to go out of town for my kids Spring Break from school this year so as part of our family's stay-cation we spent some time exploring the Cranbrook Institute of Science. Located within the National Historic Landmark recognized campus of the Cranbrook Educational Community along Woodward Avenue in the suburban Detroit city of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan this science center and museum houses a collection of more than 150,000 historically and scientifically relevant items ranging from meteoroids to mastodon tusks.  It features a state-of-the-art planetarium, a space observatory, and over a dozen galleries that cover topics including archeology, anthropology, astronomy, biology, geology, and physics.

Three of the most popular displays at the Cranbook Institute of Science are a fossil cast of the "Black Beauty" T-Rex, its "Hezy" mastodon recreation & the "Steggy" statue that welcomes visitors near the entrance of the museum.

During prehistoric times following the extinction of the dinosaurs, Michigan was home to pachyderms known as Mastodons.  Compared to the more popularly known Woolly Mammoths, mastodons had shorter legs, longer bodies and were more muscular.  They had bodies similar to today's Asian elephants but with huge tusks. The remains of 300 mastodons have been found in Michigan, including 17 in Oakland County where the Cranbrook Institute of Science is located.  The facility has developed a reputation as a source of expertise on mastodons from its experience studying many of the locally discovered remnants and has several bones and tusks on display at the museum.  From examining these mastodon remains they have created a life size replica nicknamed Hezy; in tribute to Professor Jeheskel "Hezy" Shoshani, an evolutionary biologist and one of the world's leading elephant experts, who was killed by a terrorist incident while in Ethiopia in 2008.

Walking up to this huge reproduction is impressive and makes you wonder if at some point in history may one of these beasts tromped through where your backyard is now. Hezy catches the attention of every visitor to the Cranbrook Institute of Science but it especially puts smiles on all the kids faces.  Check out the display cases surrounding Hezy which contain locally found mastodon bones and tusks which provide additional insight into these prehistoric creatures.

One of the most well preserved Tyrannosaurus Rex fossils ever found called Black Beauty is on display at the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta, Canada near where it was excavated in 1980.  It was given this name because during fossilisation the minerals in the ground where it was found transformed the dinosaur's bones a shiny dark color.  Black Beauty is considered one of the most complete T Rex skeletons ever found.  From castings made of the original Black Beauty fossils, visitors to Cranbrook Institute of Science can get a close up view of an accurate replica of this amazing dinosaur skeleton rather than having to venture to Canada to get a peek at it.

Knowing that a multitude of local school districts were going to be off for Spring Break the same week as our visit, the museum brought in a variety of partners to provide interactive, informational activities for kids that were provided at no additional  charge to the Cranbrook Institute of Science's regular admission price.  Activities taking place during this "Spring Into Science" special event ranged from learning about bird watching to checking out a Chevy Volt.  My kids really enjoyed making some jewelry from recycled materials and learning how to paddle a kayak during our visit.

They also got a close up look at a live Sea Lamprey, called the vampire of the Great Lakes, which feeds by attaching a mouth full of teeth to a fish and draining it of its blood.  As part of this presentation by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, my kids learned how invasive plants and animals are damaging our local environment.

Additionally, Michigan's Department of Health and Human Services had a nice setup that let kids pretend to fish with a pole that had a magnet at the end of its line.  Kids could compare the laminated cardboard fish they caught to a chart listing species found in local lakes and rivers.  Plus they provided information on which fish were the safest to eat and how often it is appropriate for people to consume local fish based upon the pollution of our waterways.

Before leaving we also toured the museum's traveling exhibit gallery that is currently featuring, TUTANKHAMUN: "Wonderful Things" from the Pharaoh's Tomb, which will be on display through September 3, 2017.  It features more than 100 detailed replicas of items that archeologist Howard Carter found during his 1922 discovery and exploration of Egyptian Pharaoh King Tut's tomb.  The exhibition provided my kids with an eye opening look at how life was before way before the technological conveniences they enjoy today.  They were also spooked out a bit by some of the mummies and statues being exhibited so you may want to be conscious about the "scary factor" when considering taking children to this special exhibit.  The TUTANKHAMUN display will be replaced by one focused on CHOCOLATE in September. It promises to explore the plant, products, history, and culture of chocolate through the lenses of botany, ecology, anthropology, economics, conservation, and popular culture.

The Cranbrook Institute of Science is open Tuesday - Thursday (10 am - 5 pm) Friday/Saturday (10 am - 10 pm) and Sunday (Noon - 4 pm).  Admission until 5 pm is $13 adults/teens and children/seniors $9.50.  Friday/Saturday admission after 5 pm is $6.50 teens/adults and $5.50 seniors/children.  There is an additional charge to visit the traveling exhibit gallery (TUTANKAMUN / CHOCOLATE) and to take in a planetarium show.

My kids and I really enjoyed our visit to the Cranbrook Institute of Science. For more information about planning your own visit, please visit science.cranbrook.edu.
