POPULAR TABLE TOP GAME INSPIRES ANIMATED TV SHOW

infinity paradise lost tv series

Corvus Belli’s popular table top game Infinity, an intense wargame of counter-espionage set in a sci-fi, high-tech future universe, is the inspiration for a new animated television series courtesy of renowned producer/director Jay Oliva, the animator responsible for nine Warner Bros. films, including the two-part Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Produced by Lex+Otis Studios and TeamTO, the series – Infinity: Paradise Lost – features the vocal talents of Raffi Barsoumian (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Seal Team, The Code), Abubakr Ali (Grendel, Law & Order: Organized Crime), Emily O’Brien (Days of Our Lives, Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham), Nick E. Tarabay (Spartacus, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Roshelle Simpson (Gather by the Ghost Light). The show will feature an original score composed by Frederik Weidmann (Star Trek: Picard).

Infinity, the game and its animated series, finds mankind nearly 200 years into an alternate future where humanity has departed Earth and colonized multiple star systems. While there is a shared, albeit tense unity among these planetary factions, conflicts still exist as great nations attempt to maintain control of resources in order to further enhance their grip on power. Aliens are believed to have gone extinct in these star systems – until they begin to arrive. This is where Infinity begins.

“Most table top games are either big armies or smaller models, but Infinity is more like a skirmish game with tons of terrain, like you’re playing on a little diorama – and that visual side really drew me to the game and inspired the animation, Oliva communicated to ageekdaddy.com. There’s a cyberpunk aspect, but also a very Ghost in the Shell feel with holograms and futuristic weaponry. The influences include Dune and some classic sci-fi of the past. It all translated very easily to animation.”

Are you geeked to see a table top game being the basis for a new television show? The sci-fi wargame aspect of Infinity: Paradise Lost definitely has my interest piqued. MARVEL ZOMBIES ALL IN KICKSTARTER PLEDGE

Marvel Zombicide

When I heard that CMON GAMES fantastic Zombicide tabletop role playing game was doing a mashup with Marvel superheroes there was no doubt in my mind that I would be going ALL IN on a pledge for its Kickstarter campaign. This resulted in a gigantic Galactus game piece and ten boxes of goodies including two core game play boxes, eleven expansion packs with themes that include Fantastic Four and Guardians of the Galaxy adventures, board tiles for various scenarios, and a ton of stretch goal characters to play with arriving at my doorstep. Time for an unboxing!

A zombie plague strikes and not even Earth’s mightiest heroes are safe. Marvel Zombies is a cooperative board game for 1 to 6 players, based on the core mechanics of the popular Zombicide series, bringing non-stop zombie action to the Marvel universe. Original art by comics legend Marco Checchetto is incorporated into amazing game pieces and playing cards depicting iconic Marvel characters in glorious (and often gory) detail.

In the primary Marvel Zombies Core Box, players take on the role of superheroes who have been infected and succumbed to the virus. Unlike other variations of Zombicide by CMON, in this game instead of battling zombies you take on the role of them.  Players' mission is to spread the zombie plague far and wide. Heroes retain twisted versions of their former personalities but are now enslaved to an insatiable hunger.  Players face off against other heroes who have yet to succumb to the infection, along with the relentless members of S.H.I.E.L.D., in a battle of survival. Game missions are inspired by the scripts of Marvel Zombies comic books. Are you ready to destroy the world?

Marvel Zombies Game

If you prefer the traditional hero role of superheroes, Marvel Zombies also has a second core box, X-MEN RESISTENCE, that lets players be survivors battling in classic Zombicide mode. This core box has mutant superheroes take a stand against the relentless zombie plague. It also opens the door for gameplay that lets a variety of other Marvel superheroes battle zombies instead of having to play the game as one.

xmen resistance

Which of the core boxes will you prefer to play in: zombie mode or survivor mode? There are also expansion packs for extended game play that include Fantastic 4: Under Siege; Guardians of the Galaxy; Clash of the Sinister Six; Hydra Resurrection; and Sentinel Strike. Plus there is a Galactus mode that was exclusive to the Kickstarter campaign but you can still potentially get your hands on through the secondary market like E-Bay or select game stores.

FANTASTIC FOUR

Immerse yourself in the chaos of a zombie-infested New York and the Baxter Building in the "Marvel Zombies: A Zombicide Game - Fantastic Four: Under Siege" expansion. Choose your path as you can play as either Zombie or Survivor Modes. Use the Fantastic Four to save New York or lead them into the ranks of the undead.

SENTINEL STRIKE

Giant robotic Sentinels can be added to any scenario to bring an extra challenge to the players. These robots, programmed to hunt down and exterminate any mutant lifeforms, do not care about the distinction between living and dead. If it’s still moving, it’s a threat that must be eliminated. This expansion will contain a few Sentinel-centered scenarios for both Zombie Mode (using the New York tiles from the Marvel Zombies core box) and Hero Mode (using the X-Mansion tiles from the X-Men Resistance core box). Each of the Sentinels has a unique, highly detailed game piece, measuring a whopping 12cm high.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Join the Guardians of the Galaxy, even as some of their own have succumbed to the relentless zombie virus, in "Marvel Zombies: A Zombicide Game - Guardians of the Galaxy." Face the terror of a zombie outbreak in the far reaches of space, where the Guardians must confront not only their zombified comrades but also the formidable zombie Thanos wielding the Infinity Stones.

THE SINISTER SIX

Witness the ultimate showdown in "Marvel Zombies: A Zombicide Game - Clash of the Sinister Six" as heroes and villains unite against a relentless zombie outbreak! The Sinister Six, longtime enemies of Spider-Man, must join forces with Super Heroes to combat their infected comrades and halt the zombie plague.  This expansion pack introduces Team vs. Team mode, where players confront one another across the undead divide, determining the fate of New York City in a thrilling, high-stakes battle.

HYDRA RESURRECTION

Confront the ultimate evil as the Red Skull takes control of legions of Hydra zombie soldiers, posing a dire threat to the world. This expansion adds character pieces and board game tiles to allow the creation of new scenarios to play.

DICE THRONE MARVEL EDITION

marve dice throne game

Warriors from multiple dimensions and times have been transported to a gladiatorial arena to engage in combat to see who is the greatest champion among them in the dice-rolling tabletop game DICE THRONE. This Yahtzee inspired dueling game from Roxley Game involves the tactical use of unique abilities and the manipulation of dice rolls to battle opponents who roleplay from a fantastic lineup of characters ranging from a Barbarian to a Vampire Lord. It is a fun, fast-paced game that is complemented by fabulous artwork incorporated into its components.

And now players can take on the roles of characters from the Marvel Universe in their DICE THRONE battles. The Marvel Edition of DICE THRONE incorporates the Scarlet Witch, Miles Morales Spider-Man, Loki and Thor into gameplay. Battle in one-on-one duels or multiple player battle royals among these Marvel characters or incorporate them into gladiator matches versus warriors from any other published DICE THRONE game. Pit Spider-Man versus Shadow Thief, Scarlet Witch against a Monk, Thor taking on Paladine, or Loki engaging against the Tactician for example.

This Geek Daddy took on Groot to see who would come out on top in the sibling rivalry between Thor and Loki a DICE THRONE Marvel Edition bout. Thor has strong attacks to overpower adversaries; but Loki utilizes illusion and trickery to his advantage. We studied the rules and got ready to jump into the DICE THRONE arena playing as the Gods of Thunder and Mischief. Every player character starts with a set number of health points and the first combatant to reach 0 loses.

op games

The game starts off with each player rolling a die. Highest roll gets to go first in the turns. Each player starts off four action cards in their hand that can impact offensive and defensive moves by your character. You can accumulate up to six cards in your hand at any given time during the game. You also start with 2 combat points which are a currency that is needed to play action cards or to potentially utilize some of a character's unique abilities and skills. For example, action cards range from 0 - 2 combat points to activate. The game includes health and combat point trackers for each character to make keeping track of these stats easy.

Every turn starts with a player gaining 1 combat point and drawing an action card. At this time a player can also discard a card from their hand to buy 1 combat point. Next the player can roll any number of their five dice up to three times to activate a single offensive ability. Players can either utilize the numbers on the dice or the symbols to activate different attacks and defenses. So, in my first roll Thor the die had the numbers showing 1,3,3,5,6. I kept the 1 and one of the 3s and re-rolled 3, 5 and 6. The second roll came up as a 1, 2 and 6. I kept the 2 and rerolled the 1 and 6. My third roll came up a 4 and a 1. That gave me a small straight 1,2,3,4 which triggered a lightning rod attack dealing 7 points of damage to Loki.

Opposing players though can attempt to Defend against an attack. Each character has a unique defense ability. Loki's don't really prevent damage but allow him to essentially utilize or gain a skill or ability from any roll of the die during his defense move. In this situation, Loki's roll of the die allowed him to gain another action card but he still had to subtract 7 points from his initial 50.

Now it was Loki's turn. Groot drew a card to add to his hand and added one to his combat points moving him to 3 on his dial tracker. On his first roll of the die, Groot's dice showed three with scepter symbols and two with illusion symbols. Loki then inflicted his confuddle attack upon Thor which inflicted two status effects plus seven points of damage upon Thor.

Each character may have one or more status effects which are represented by tokens. Positive or Negative status effects can be gained or inflicted on yourself or other players. Status effects are usually activated or inflicted via dice rolls activating an offensive ability, such as Loki's Confuddle attack, or through a player utilizing an action card to trigger one.

Loki actually has three status effects that he can utilize: Illusion, Bag of Tricks, and Spellbound. Loki utilized these status effects to negatively impact and damage his opponents more than direct attacks against them. When combating Loki he will try to have your head spinning with these status effects.

Utilizing Illusion, when Loki is attacked he can present the other player with three face down Illusion cards. The attacking player picks one card to flip over and resolves the attack based upon the text on the card. Illusion could have no impact at all on an attack or could totally eliminate any negative impact on him.

loki status effects

Loki's bag of tricks makes a player who has been inflicted with the status effect to remove it at the beginning of the next turn after it has been inflicted by rolling one die. On a roll of 1, the player loses one combat point; on a roll of 2-5, Loki chooses whether the player heals two health points, gains one combat point, or receives two damage points; on a roll of 6, Loki gains two combat points. Bag of Tricks is especially valuable when there are multiple players in a game who Loki may want to ally with and in 1x1 combat Loki can potentially up his own health or combat points from its use.

Spellbound allows Loki to limit an opponent's attacks. When inflicted, a token is placed so that it covers the name of an opponent's offensive ability. Loki can use this to eliminate another player's easy to gain attacks such as the high and low straight triggered offensive abilities. This causes the attacker to be more reliant on the luck of the roll of dice and could befuddle offensive options against Loki,

Thor has two status effects of his own: Guard Break and Electrokinesis. Utilizing Guard Break, Thor can roll one die after completing his offensive roll phase. If the outcome is 1-3, Thor's attack becomes undefendable! The Electrokinesis status effects can be used to boast Thor's abilities or cashed in to draw one action card.

Thor also has a companion, his trusty weapon Mjolnir, which has its own special rules and is represented by its own token of the magical hammer. Throwing Mjolnir provides one point of undefendable damage against an opponent. Mjolnir is thrown or retrieved by discarding an action card or by triggering an offensive ability that includes throw or retrieve instructions upon it. Mjolnir can be a game breaker for Thor if he uses it strategically.

Who do you think prevailed in this epic battle between Loki and Thor?! To find out, I encourage you to play out your own DICE THRONE Marvel Edition game to see who comes out on top. Which of the two is your favorite?

LOKI VS THOR

Reveling in trickery, Loki the God of Mischief must be found hiding among his Illusions. Befuddling his foes with a deft hand, he will put a spell on you. Caution is advised when he smiles and graciously gives you a gift as his bags of tricks might backfire in your face.

Thor's attacks sizzle with energy, pushing the God of Thunder to new levels of power that can penetrate all manner of defenses. When he grasps the handle of Mjolnir, his legendary companion, he can call forth the lightning from the storm to bring low all his enemies.

Also joining the DICE THRONE fray are four more Marvel characters available in expansion packs. Marvel DICE THRONE 2-Hero Boxes let players bring Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Black Widow and Doctor Strange into the action. Captain Marvel's cosmic rays, Black Panther's Vibranium suit, Doctor Strange's Premonition and Black Widow's Time Bomb create a variety of new scenarios for players to engage in during DICE THRONE duels.

DICE THRONE is recommended for ages 8 years and older. It has an average game time of a half hour per match. These Marvel versions of DICE THRONE are available from The OP Games and are fully compatible with other Roxley Games editions of the game.

Who is geeked about the Marvel Edition of DICE THRONE? Which character are you most excited to play as? I'm looking forward to playing some matches as Dr. Strange!

HOW TO MAKE LEARNING BETTER FOR YOUR 10-YEAR-OLD

make learning better for your 10 year old

The only difference between learning schoolwork and the latest TV show’s title is that schoolwork comes with tests. When kids think about school, they think of tests and homework. Kids don’t love these aspects of school, but tests can help enhance and measure learning. To help kids, the first thing you can do is set a positive attitude towards school work.

Create A Positive Attitude Towards Schoolwork

A lot of kids ask: What’s the point of schoolwork?

And while kids may easily lose motivation from bad grades, grades don’t determine or show their true learning ability. Teachers now use individualized tests like i-Ready to identify a child’s specific strengths and weaknesses to enhance learning.

study tips for fourth graders

Show The Relevance Of Schoolwork To The Future

Connect schoolwork to your child’s interests and to real life. Math is all around us, for example, in the kitchen, while you are shopping or cooking. So is reading: magazines, books, road signs, websites, cartoons are all opportunities for your kids to engage with the world around them.

Empathize With Your Child

Sometimes school and learning can be challenging. Show your child that it’s OK to struggle, that they can learn from and overcome challenges. You can show them how you might struggle with something like a new recipe or a new work assignment, and give them strategies for tackling a new skill or challenge.

homework tips

Embrace Tough Questions Together

Show the importance of learning the tough subjects. Let your child in on your everyday hardships to show them that allows us to grow as people.

Beyond sympathizing with low grades, help your 10-year-old improve the scores by getting hands-on in their education. If your child struggles in math, give them a math question every day. Track their math improvement using assessment tools like i-Ready levels.

Be Your Child’s Study Partner And Tutor

Take part in your child’s schoolwork by:

  • Have open conversations about schoolwork, the school, the teachers, your child’s experience, etc.
  • Use all available resources to enhance the learning experience. Use different learning styles and learning materials.
  • Discuss the things that your child learns in class and relate the lessons to real-life experience as much as possible.
  • Track your child’s academic progress. Go through your child’s i-Ready answers together, discuss their areas for growth, and celebrate successes.
  • Create a study haven for your child. Allow them to dictate what it looks like, the decoration, and who gets in their space.
  • Give your child a question every day. As they research the question, they learn a lot in the process.
  • Use every waking moment as a learning experience. Take walks and discuss the things you come across. Let your child read the labels in the supermarket for you. Ask your child to do small math tasks like calculating the change you should get from the cashier.
  • Be a role model. Share with your child your discoveries and things you know. Introduce a different perspective to learning that does not involve classrooms and teachers. Go on adventures together and teach her about the birds, the animals, the history of that place. Chances are, you will fascinate her enough to want to learn things herself.
homework tips

Develop Your Child’s Love For Reading

Text is the primary way that schoolwork is presented. If your child enjoys reading, they are less resistant to books. Do these things to make your 10-year-old love reading.

  • Spend some time every day reading together. You can make it a family routine to read every day.
  • Have written materials everywhere. Get comic books, kid’s magazines, newspapers, storybooks, etc. Let your child stick papers on her walls. You can even have a reading room with books and magazine excerpts stuck on the wall.
  • Switch up between screen time and reading time. Instead of watching movies all the time, get her storybooks to entertain herself when you take away the remote.

Use Game-Based Learning

Expand beyond books. Use games to teach math and critical thinking. Games like Chess, Sudoku, joining dots, finding missing words, and other logical games enhance your child’s reasoning. Reasoning is a primary ingredient to learning. The other part is memorizing what they are taught. Brainstorming, dictations, and quizzes sharpen memory skills. Here are more examples of learning games for ten-year-olds.

game based learning

Instead of giving rewards for every study goal your son achieves, turn his goal achievements into a long-term investment.

For example, what if he earned a point for every goal achieved? When these points get to say, 100, he can get maybe an hour of screen time, or he could save and earn more points to redeem them at 500 points for his favorite toy?

It takes an average of 66 days for a task to become routine. By the 66th day, doing homework (or whatever the goal was) can become automatic. If the goal was to do a math question every day, by the 66th day that habit will be established and may lead to gains in math learning.
