EMPIRE OF THE ANTS VIDEO GAME

empire of the ants

Entomologists, zoologists who study insects, as well as those of us who are fans of Disney's "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" movies are sure to be geeked about an upcoming video game coming to PC, PlayStation and Xbox later this year. Video game publisher Microids is creating a 3D strategy game based upon author Bernard Werber's popular Empire of the Ants novel. In Werber's science fiction fantasy, ants are the heroes of the story while humans are the pesty antagonists. The upcoming video game will allow players to explore a vast photo-realistic world inspired by Bernard Werber's book viewed from an ant's perspective.

Microids just released a trailer of its work in progress for Empire of the Ants. The video game looks amazing! Check out the Microids Empire of the Ants trailer:

In the Empire of the Ants video game, use every move to your advantage on the path to world domination. Strategy, exploration, conflict, and alliances with local wildlife species will be essential for your colony’s survival. Stand out elements of the game include:
  • Take part in an epic adventure - Take the role of a brave ant through a third person view and explore unique abilities that can help you in battle and exploration.
  •  A 3D real-time strategy game with progressive difficulty - The game offers an intuitive experience with tutorials for newcomers to learn RTS fundamentals, while providing scalable difficulty and advanced mechanics for veteran players.
  •  Explore vast environments and meet the local wildlife - Empire of the Ants will invite players to sink their teeth into a photorealistic forest where they will meet and interact with other ants and forest dwellers throughout their journey.
  •  Immersive and photo-realistic - Unreal Engine 5 pushes the boundaries of photorealism - just look at the plants and wildlife!
  •  Narrative based on the seasons - The game features a narrative that follows the rhythm of the seasons and affects wildlife attributes such as speed, resistance, buffs, and more.
  •  Day and night environments - The maps in the game will also change depending on the time of day (day, night, dawn, and twilight).

One of my favorite scenes in the Empire of the Ants video game trailer was watching the appearance of the Praying Mantis. They are one of my favorite insects. I'm always geeked when catching a glimpse of them hunting around our backyard landscape and pool.

If you want to get a close up look at insects like praying mantis, ants, butterflies, and lady bugs in real life check out insectlore.com. They have kits where you can order insect eggs or larva and watch them hatch. My kids loved it when we watched caterpillars that arrived in an Insect Lore kit create cocoons them emerge as butterflies. Read our Insect Lore review here. You can find Insect Lore kits on Amazon.com

THE SURPRISING LIFE SKILLS GAMING CAN HELP YOUR KIDS DEVELOP

Geek Daddy Blog

It’s 2024, but it’s fair to say that a lot of people still think that gaming is a waste of time, especially for kids, who should be out hitting a ball or learning a language or whatever. However, those of us who know a bit about gaming, know that it can be a valuable part of any child (and adult's) life, and actually, it can help gamers to develop lots of neat life skills that will help them through life.

That being the case, below, let’s take a look at some of the most practical skills gaming can impart to kids (and big kids) alike:

1. Driving Skills: Virtual Wheels, Real Skills

Believe it or not, racing around virtual tracks can give your kids a head start on real-world driving, so even if you won't be Googling ‘ book drive test ’ for a few years yet, let them blast out the driving games in preparation today. Handling virtual vehicles requires quick reflexes, sharp hand-eye coordination, and understanding of speed and space. It's like a driver’s ed class, but with zero risk of denting the family car, and that’s a bonus, right?

2. Problem-Solving: Brain Gymnastics

Adventure and puzzle games are like a really heavy workout for the brain. They teach kids to think on their feet, solve problems, and strategize like little masterminds. Each level is a new puzzle, turning your child into a mini Sherlock Holmes, and this will help them solve math problems, engineering issues and IT bugs in their school work for sure.

3. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Many games require players to work as a team to achieve common goals. It teaches kids the art of collaboration, communication, and even leadership, and not only how much fun it can be, but how well co-operating can help us all to come up with solutions and get things done.

4. Money Management: Virtual Budgeting 101

Some games involve managing resources or virtual money – a sneak-peek into budgeting and resource allocation. Your kids learn to save for that epic sword or space cruiser, teaching them the value of money, which will see them in good stead once they head off for college and have to manage their budgets for themselves for the first time.

5. Technological Fluency: Digital Natives Unite

Let’s face it, we’re in a digital era. Gaming helps kids become tech-savvy and comfortable with modern technology. It’s a bit like giving them a passport to the digital world – an essential skill for the tech-driven future.

6. Creativity and Imagination: Beyond the Screen

Games with open worlds or creative platforms (think Minecraft) are digital sandboxes. They encourage creativity, design, and imagination, - all things that can lead to lucrative careers when they are a bit older

7. Patience and Perseverance: The Grind Pays Off

Games can be challenging. They teach kids that sometimes, you fail and try again. This instils patience, perseverance, and the understanding that practice makes perfect. It’s the virtual version of “If at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again.”

8. Stress Relief: Digital Decompression

Believe it or not, gaming can be a great stress reliever. It allows kids a break from the real world and lets them blow off steam in a safe environment. And learning ho to do this will help them manage their mental health in a healthy way as they get older.

So, while it’s important to balance screen time with other activities, gaming is not the villain it’s often made out to be, and it can actually help kids to develop skills that will see them through life. Let them play!

BUILDING BLOCKS FOR TEACHING KIDS NEW THINGS ABOUT LIFE

teaching kids new things about life

As a parent, it is your job to teach your children the essential skills and knowledge they need to thrive. Teaching your kids new things doesn't have to be a difficult and trying task. Instead, with the right approach, it can be fun and educational for everyone! Here are five easy ways to introduce your children to new concepts and help them learn more about life:

Explore Nature

Taking a walk or hike together in nature is a great way for kids to learn about the plants, animals, and other natural elements that make up their world. By observing and discussing what they see during these outings, you'll be able to show them how different species interact with each other in a safe environment without any pressure or stress. Exploring nature together is also a great way for you and your kids to get some physical activity while learning something new.

Read Books

Reading books together can create an intimate bond between parent and child and provide an opportunity for learning new things. You can use story time to teach your kids new words, discuss culture and history, and explore a wide range of topics. In addition, reading books opens the door for conversations and discussions that may not have happened otherwise. Reading also helps to boost your child's creativity and imagination, so starting from a young age is always a good idea.

Watch Interesting & Educational Movies

Movies can be a great way to teach your kids about history, science, and other topics. While not every movie is educational, there are plenty of great options available that are both entertaining and informative. For example, you can find Christian movies available here that are designed to teach children about the Bible and its teachings. In addition, watching movies together as a family can be a fun activity for everyone involved and an easy way for children to learn more about the world around them.

Visit Museums

Museums are educational institutions that help to preserve, conserve and interpret artifacts and works of art. Visiting a museum together can help children learn about different cultures, history, and science. You can also find interactive exhibits that are designed to engage kids of all ages in the learning process. Museums provide an excellent opportunity for you and your children to explore topics that they may not have been exposed to otherwise.

Play Games

Games are a great way to introduce your children to new concepts and have fun at the same time. Whether it's a board game, video game, or card game, playing together can help kids learn problem-solving skills, learn about different topics, and understand cause-and-effect relationships. Playing games also encourages teamwork and communication between family members, which can benefit your child's social and emotional development.

No matter how you choose to introduce new concepts to your children, the most important thing is that they feel comfortable and excited about learning something new. With the right approach, it can be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your kids!

KEEPING PEOPLE AND PETS HEALTHY: TIPS FOR HUMAN-ANIMAL BONDING

We all know how much joy and companionship our furry friends can bring into our lives. But there is more to having a pet than just companionship – pets can provide real health benefits, too. From reducing stress levels to improving cardiovascular health, there are plenty of reasons why it's worth welcoming a pet into your home. Whether it's a cat, dog, or some other type of animal, here are some ways having a pet can benefit your life. Here are some tips on the advantages of owning a pet and how you can ensure that both you and your new companion stay healthy.

Pets bring joy and companionship into our lives and can also provide real health benefits. From reducing stress levels to improving your cardiovascular health, there are plenty of reasons why welcoming a pet into your home is beneficial. Whether you have a cat or dog (or some other type of animal), owning a pet can improve quality of life and help keep us healthy.

Mental and Emotional Health Benefits of Pets

A pet in the house may be associated with improved mental health outcomes. Studies have suggested that people who own pets experience lower rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness than those without pets. Additionally, having an animal companion can help reduce stress and provide a warm source of comfort and joy.

Physical Health Benefits of Pets

In addition to boosting mental and emotional health, pet ownership can also have physical benefits. Spending time with an animal companion has been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. People who own cats may be at a lower risk for stroke than those without pets. Social and

Interpersonal Benefits of Pets

Pets can also be beneficial for social interactions. They offer companionship, non-judgmental support, acceptance, and unconditional love that can help improve your relationships with friends and family members. Additionally, having a pet gives you an immediate topic to discuss when meeting new people – it can help create meaningful connections and foster a sense of belonging.

Choosing the Right Pet for Your Lifestyle

When considering getting a pet, it's essential to consider the type of animal that works best for your lifestyle. Do you have enough space in your home? Can you provide nutritious food and a safe environment for your pet? Will your pet be able to get enough exercise and socialization? These factors will help ensure that you and your new companion stay healthy. When choosing a pet, it's essential to pick one that fits your lifestyle. For instance, if you have an active family, black lab puppies for sale might be a perfect choice, but cats or smaller breed dogs might be better suited for your needs if you live in an apartment complex.

Caring for Your Pet Properly

It's important to remember that caring for a pet is a big responsibility and requires dedication and patience. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to ensure both you and your furry friend stay healthy:
  • Make sure you set aside enough time each day to bond with your pet – spending quality time together will help create strong bonds between you.
  • Feed your pet a healthy, balanced diet – this will help keep them in optimal physical condition.
  • Regularly take your pet to the vet for checkups and vaccinations – this will ensure that they are kept up-to-date on their recommended treatments and preventative care.
  • Exercise with your pet regularly – not only is it good for both of you, but it can also be a great bonding experience!
  • Ensure proper hygiene habits when handling your pet – wash your hands after touching animals and avoid letting them lick open wounds or mouths.
  • Remember to provide adequate shelter, protection from extreme temperatures, and access to plenty of fresh water at all times.
Vaccinating Your Pet Against Disease

It's essential to get your pet vaccinated against the disease. Vaccines protect not only your pet but also those around them – many zoonotic diseases can be passed from animals to humans, so vaccinating your pet is essential for keeping everyone safe. Speak with your veterinarian to determine which vaccinations are necessary for your pet's specific breed and age.

Overall, owning a pet can be incredibly beneficial in terms of physical, mental, and emotional health. Taking care of a pet requires dedication and patience, but when done correctly can be extremely rewarding for you and your furry friend. So if you're looking for an addition to the family that brings joy and unconditional love, consider getting a pet today!

How to Manage Stress with a Pet in the Home

Having a pet in the home can be a great way to reduce stress levels, but managing the stress that comes with an animal companion is essential. This includes giving them plenty of attention and exercise, so they do not become anxious or destructive. It's also important to create boundaries regarding discipline so that they understand the limits of acceptable behavior.

Tips for Keeping Your Pet Healthy

During lockdown and quarantine periods, it can be challenging to maintain your pet's health. However, there are some steps you can take to ensure their physical and mental well-being. This includes providing them with plenty of exercise, a healthy diet, and adequate enrichment activities. Additionally, remember that these confinement periods can be stressful for pets and humans – try to create an environment where both of you are comfortable and safe.

The Cost Considerations of Owning a Pet

Although having a pet has many benefits, it is crucial to consider the cost considerations associated with pet ownership. This includes Veterinary bills, food, toys, and other supplies needed to care for your animal companion. Additionally, it may be necessary to invest in pet insurance or a savings plan to help offset the costs of unexpected medical bills that could arise due to illness or injury.

In conclusion, owning a pet can come with many benefits – both physical and mental – but it is essential to carefully consider all cost considerations and which type of animal is best suited for your lifestyle before taking on the responsibility of pet ownership. You and your pet can enjoy a long-lasting bond filled with love and companionship with proper care and dedication.

CONNECTING WITH YOUR KIDS MEANS FINDING A HOBBY YOU ALL ENJOY

dad blogger

Connecting with your kids is important, and it’s more important than ever in the age of social media that we maintain that strong relationship. It might feel difficult sometimes, but be assured that if you put in the effort, you are going to be able to see success. Here are some of the hobbies that you can try to create bonding opportunities with your kids:

Look Into Sports

If you and your children enjoy being athletic then you should look into doing some sports as a family. There are many things you can do from martial arts to adventure sports. Finding something you all enjoy doing will be the hardest part of engaging in a sport together. One of you might want to do swimming while another wants to play basketball. An easy way to resolve this is to do both or all of the sports that has been recommended. If there is a clash in days then you could alternate different weeks to keep everyone happy. Family sports keeps everyone engaged and is a great bonding experience for you all.

Get Creative

If you are wanting to find a hobby that involves getting dirty while having a fun time then how about putting your creative hat on. Children love creating things with stickers, glue, paint and glitter. Parents aren’t usually too keen but there are always other alternatives when it comes to creative hobbies. You could even join a pottery class so you can all attend and make something to be proud of. Whatever you make can be displayed in your home for all to see. This will create lasting memories for all of you and you can look back on it over time. But creativity doesn’t always mean getting dirty, and you can still create something too. Think of music, for instance, it’s honestly the perfect example of this. All they need is a musical instrument they love (and you too), a reliable sheet music site for good tunes, and just some time to learn to play music together!

On The Geekier Side

The final idea is that you can try looking into the geekier side of things. As a geek daddy, I think it’s important to consider some of the geekier side of things, and that includes things like collecting funko pops. You can also sell funko pops if you have ones that you no longer like or want in the home. Then there are things like comic books, movies based on comic books, action figures, books and so much more. The point is that these are the kinds of things that a lot of kids enjoy, so this might be something worth taking a look into.

It’s important that you are doing everything in your power to keep your connection with your kids as strong as it possibly can be. Participating in a hobby together is a great way to spend quality time with kids. Good luck in finding that special activity that is the best fit for your family.  Now have at least a few ideas to get started.

FOUR SUPERB BENEFITS OF SHARING HOBBIES WITH YOUR KID

ageekdaddy.com

From sports to collectibles to video games and beyond, there is an unlimited number of hobbies that you can choose from. As a parent, you also want to encourage your child to show an interest in the things you love, but this isn’t always easy. Some kids may not care about what you love, or they’d much rather hang out with friends or spend an evening in front of the TV. While this is understandable, it also means you’re both missing out on something special. So, what are the benefits of sharing hobbies with your kids?

You Can Build a Bond

Building a strong bond between you and your child is something any parent dreams of achieving. In most cases, the bond is already there, but if you want to make more memories, sharing hobbies is a great solution. As much as family dinners or car rides to school will stick with them, the experiences they have with you when they score their first goal or win their first online game are even better, and you’ll be there for every success, so they know you've always supported them.

You Can Meet New People Together

Meeting new people can be tricky as an adult, and if your child has struggled to make friends at school or around the neighborhood, a shared hobby can expand both of your circles. Wherever you go, a local club or activity gives you the chance to get to know someone different, or even build a friendship with someone who was previously a peripheral figure in your life. This is also great for teaching your child vital social skills and can help them get out of the house more and build friendships with kids their age.

You Can Explore Something New

There are so many hobbies to choose from that it can feel overwhelming. While most people are drawn to traditional hobbies like sports, others may prefer to look further afield. There are still a lot of hobbies you can get into, such as scale models, trading cards, or mini model painting. You don’t even need to commit to a specific hobby right now. Instead, try a few hobbies together and see which one you enjoy the most.

It Can Build Their Confidence

Confidence can be tricky for kids at any age, which is why trying new hobbies can be such a significant factor in their life. If your child is naturally shy, they may need evidence that they are more capable than they assume, so helping them improve their skills through different sports (such as boxing or MMA) or music will help them feel better about themselves. Once they master their skills, they will never worry about not being good enough ever again.

Getting On Your Hobby Horse

Sharing hobbies with your child brings plenty of benefits to your home and will do wonders for your relationship. They will learn an array of skills and even build other friendships that will stay with them forever. If you want to make the most of your child’s childhood, introducing them to your favorite hobbies is an excellent place to start.

HOW TO UPGRADE YOUR HOME SECURITY FOR MAXIMUM PROTECTION

geek daddy

You may not realize it, but your home security is probably not as good as it could be. However, you can do many simple things to upgrade your home security and protect yourself, your family, and your belongings. Here are some tips on how to upgrade your home security for maximum protection.

Security System

One of the most important things you can do to upgrade your home security is to install a good security system. A security system will alert you if someone breaks into your home, and it can also deter burglars from even trying to break in. Make sure to choose a system that is right for your needs and budget, and be sure to have it professionally installed.

Home Security Cameras

Another great way to upgrade your home security is to install home security cameras. Cameras can deter burglars and help you keep an eye on your property, even when you're not there. Be sure to choose a camera that is right for your needs and budget, and be sure to have it professionally installed. A ghost camera system is an excellent option for many people.

Change Your Locks

One of the simplest things you can do to upgrade your home security is to change your locks. If you have old or worn-out locks, it's time to replace them. You should also consider changing your locks if you've recently moved into a new home. Be sure to choose the right lock for your needs and budget and have it professionally installed.

Get A Dog

Another great way to upgrade your home security is to get a dog. Dogs are not only great protectors, but they can also be excellent deterrents. Burglars will think twice before trying to break into a home with a dog, so it's worth considering if you're looking for ways to upgrade your home security.

Install Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting is a great way to deter burglars and make your home more secure. Be sure to install lights in all dark areas around your home, including the sides and back. You should also consider motion-activated lights, which will turn on when someone walks by, startling them and deterring them from trying to break in.

Keep Your Valuables Safe

One of the best ways to protect your valuables is to keep them hidden. Burglars are looking for easy targets, so they're less likely to try to break in if they can't see your valuables. So be sure to keep all of your valuables, including jewelry, electronics, and important documents, in a safe place.

Stay Alert and Be Prepared

The best way to protect yourself and your family is to stay alert and be prepared. If you think someone might be trying to break into your home, call the police immediately. Don't try to confront the intruder yourself – let the professionals handle it. In addition, always keep a safe place in mind if you need to get away from an intruder quickly.

Review Your Home Security Regularly

It's important to review your home security regularly to ensure it's still effective. As your family changes and your needs change, you may need to adjust your security accordingly. Be sure to keep an eye on the latest home security technology and always be prepared. There are many great ways to upgrade your home security, and these are just a few of the most effective. So be sure to take action and implement as many of these tips as possible to keep yourself, your family, and your belongings safe.

HOW TO GET YOUR KIDS TECH SMART (WHEN THEY'RE READY)

geek daddy

Kids are introduced to and using technology younger than ever before whether at school, at home, or a friend’s house. This is just the way the world is now, and it can have its benefits, especially when you consider how much more reliant on technology humanity may be in the future. Yet, your kids may not be as tech smart as they could be even though they use devices every day, so how can a parent help their kids be smarter about technology?

Show Them the Internet as a Force for Good

The internet can have a bad reputation, and it’s easy to see why. If it’s not misinformation spread across every channel, it is trolls trying to get a rise out of the most insignificant disagreements. However, as bad as some corners of the internet can be, it can - and should be - a force for good.

Throughout history, there has never been a better resource for pooling the entirety of the world’s knowledge. If you can show your kids the secrets for research, recipes, and reconnecting, they will be able to use the internet to its potential without venturing too far into slinging wars about character arcs in a series that will be canceled soon anyway.

Use Tech Together

Parents are right to be wary about what their child sees online or how they interact with technology. Too many parents have allowed the tablet to be a third parent, supervising the children without any real idea of what is going on.

This can improve your child’s tech literacy, but it could also lead them down dangerous rabbit holes. A parent can consider the best ways to use tech to have fun with your kids, which allows you to supervise them without being overbearing.

Walk Them Through Quick Fixes

There will come a time when your kids get their own laptop, tablet, or computer, and when the time comes, you want them to be self-sufficient enough to fix any issues. If your kids are old enough to understand the intricacies of a system, you can walk them through quick fixes that will save them from running to the tech store.

This mostly includes simple solutions such as clearing the app cache and system cache to speed up processing times. Similarly, replacing batteries or keyboards is also much easier than many expect, and it can save them a lot of money.

Encourage Them to Earn Their Tech Privileges

Nowadays, you might see kids even younger than your own with tablets and smartphones. They have been given these by their parents because they feel it’s the trendy thing to do. But, giving your kids devices before they are ready can be a mistake. They never understand the value or privilege of these expensive items, so you can encourage them to earn the device by proving they can be responsible. By doing this, they will appreciate and care for their devices much more.

Tech Smart

Many kids know their way around an iPhone or can access their games without parental supervision. However, this is just the tip of the tech iceberg. If you want your kids to be maestros at the keyboard, you should show them the true power of technology but make sure they remember there is a real world out there.

SIX EFFECTIVE WAYS TO BE THE BEST PARENTS TO YOUR SPECIAL NEEDS CHILD

special needs child parenting tips

Taking care of your child can be quite the roller coaster, and it can be even more overwhelming for parents with special needs children. With about 2.8 million special needs children in the country, it's safe you are not alone. Like every other child, positive reinforcement is necessary for ensuring your special needs child grows with strong self-worth, determination, and confidence. With the right amount of knowledge and strategies, you can provide them the right support to learn, develop and thrive. Here are a few tips you should consider.

Set realistic expectations

Since your child has special needs, you'll want to see what they can handle and how much they can take. In addition, you want to be sure to provide them with what they need when they need it. This is why you must be realistic with your abilities. For example, you may want to teach your child from home, but that may not be an easy task for you. Or perhaps you would want them to be more sociable, which may be difficult for them. By setting realistic expectations, you ensure that you and your child are thriving in your capacity. Remember that your child is unique, so it is vital to look at their strengths, weaknesses, talents, and interests to set your expectations.

Stay positive

A positive attitude is crucial for anyone working with a special needs child. Studies have shown that individuals with positive attitudes have made positive differences, albeit with no experience and understanding of kids with special needs. As a parent, it is your responsibility to teach your child how to deal with obstacles without becoming overwhelmed or discouraged. Don't let anything get in the way of doing what's most important, which is offering more than just emotional and moral support to the youngster. Accept your responsibility as a proactive parent.

 Be flexible

As parents with a special needs child, flexibility is a necessity. Instead of following strict routines and strategies, it is essential to employ a range of approaches to assist your special needs child to understand and master new skills. For example, if the child lacks the necessary motor skills for an activity, assist the child by developing new strategies. The truth is there's so much you are also trying to figure out. By being flexible, you can learn more about your child find strategies that bring results.

Educate yourself

It's critical to fully comprehend your child's developmental problem or any other special needs so that they can operate effectively and live joyfully. Make an effort to read as much as possible. Examine expert-written articles, attend webinars and workshops, and so forth. Keep yourself informed by conducting your research. You might be tempted to seek assistance from others, such as teachers, therapists, or child psychologists, but keep in mind that no one understands your child better than you.

Employ visual, auditory, and tactile signs

For many special needs kids, having the right cues in their surroundings may differ between their involvement and non-involvement. It can be useful to study your child's routine and favorite places and occasionally create a narrative out of them. You can also utilize index cards with simple written instructions to help them remember the rules for acceptable behavior. If your child has difficulty reading or hearing, it would be best to replace the words with hand-drawn cartoons or other images or get them a hearing aid. While there are many popular hearing aid styles, it is best to find the most comfortable one for their use.

Identify pressing needs

At times, the needs, habits, and skills at home differ from those at school. Make a list of your child's most fundamental needs and seek assistance on how you can support your child in meeting these needs. If you have any concerns, you can take your child's video to show the clinician or schedule a telehealth visit. Likewise, some potential signs help identify a special needs child, including no eye contact after three months old, no toy exploration at 6 months old, or lack of interest in playing with toys at 9 months. If the child can't retain information at one year old or is easily distracted, it's essential to seek assistance.

Taking care of your special needs child can leave you wondering if you are going about it the right way. These tips should help you feel more confident and ensure that you are the parent your child needs. But don't be too hard on yourself! You are doing great!

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A FAMILY CAR

family car buying tips

Finding a safe family car can be difficult chore. These days there are so many factors to consider, from safety ratings to size and design for the family. Here are five things that parents should look for when looking for a safe vehicle for their family to transport children in.

Vehicle Safety

Safety is the number one priority for any car, and it is much more complex than just strapping on seatbelts. Parents should look at the safety ratings of each vehicle they are considering to ensure that their children will be safe riding in them. They should also consider additional safety features such as autonomous braking systems, which can help avoid crashes or mitigate damage when a collision does occur. It is easier than ever to review vehicle safety information by doing some research online.

Cool Gadgets

Cool gadgets are an absolute must in a family vehicle. If your kids are constantly on their devices or watching movies, having a family vehicle with charging ports for multiple devices will help keep them entertained without draining your battery life. Another option would be to look at cars that offer built-in high-quality sound systems which allow each child to play their music through Bluetooth or auxiliary cables. Also, look for vehicles with modern infotainment systems like Apple CarPlay

Sufficient Space

Space in a family car is vital. Not only for your child's safety but also for their comfort and ability to enjoy the ride. If you have multiple children, it may be beneficial to look at cars that offer third-row seating, which allows up to three additional passengers. Long family trips require enough space to prevent family members from becoming irritable. Larger vehicles also have the added advantage of more cargo space for vacations or larger items like strollers.

Car Seat Compatibility

If you have a child under the age of eight, car seat compatibility is critical. Not only will it keep your children safe in an accident, but it also makes their ride more comfortable and enjoyable by allowing them to sit comfortably. Make sure that when looking at family vehicles, they are compatible with respected car seat brands. If you are not sure how to check information like child car seat compatibility, be sure to get in touch with a car dealer like edmunds, who can provide you with the correct information.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency is an often-overlooked factor in family cars. However, it should be considered due to the sheer amount of time your child will spend riding in their vehicle. Look for cars that offer high fuel economy without sacrificing too much on size or safety features. This will help save you money on gas and make long trips more manageable and less costly. Instead of spending money on gas, use the savings to make special memories with your family or use it to finance an interesting activity.

In conclusion, finding a safe family car can be time consuming but is worth the effort of doing your due diligence to ensure you pick a vehicle that meets your family's need and comfort level. Parents should keep these five things in mind before making their final choice. Don't rush in and suffer buyer's remorse a day or two later.

TIPS THAT WILL HELP YOU BALANCE WORK WITH A NEW BABY

balancing work with a new baby

Juggling the responsibilities that come with your job as well as handling a new baby can sometimes feel like an impossible task. That being said, there are things that you can do to try and make it easier on yourself. Here are a few dad life tips for balancing work with a new baby.

Set up a Calendar

Having a place where everyone’s schedules meet up with one another properly will really help you to manage everything. You need to try and keep an eye on everyone’s comings and goings. You also need to try and make sure that you manage the chaos that comes with family life.

At a glance, you need to be able to see what you are doing that week. Ideally, you will document things for the whole family, including your new baby. Create a shared calendar, which can be either on Google or even on a family organizer app. Doing this will allow you to access your calendar on your phone when on the go or you can easily keep track of things when around the house.

Your calendar should ideally make it clear, who is going to be picking up your child from daycare on any given day. It should also note any additional changes, whether there is going to be a doctor’s appointment or whether there are going to be any other commitments. Daycare closings and work obligations are important and therefore should be listed and highlighted.

Find Good Childcare

One way for you to try and alleviate a lot of the stress and the guilt about going to work is finding great childcare. It doesn’t matter whether you choose a nanny or whether you choose to go to a large daycare center because you have to try and do your research. You need to get recommendations and you also need to interview any day centers if you can. By doing this, you can then make sure that everyone is going to be happy with the decision and you can also communicate any concerns that you might have. Remember that a child being in daycare doesn't mean you still won't be a huge part of his or her life.

Divide and Conquer

Sharing your responsibilities can help to make a lot of difference. Try and get your partner involved as much as possible and also make sure that you are both on the same page. Coordinate any of your schedules and also make sure that you discuss any childcare arrangements.

Don’t forget to make a sick day plan too. If your child gets sick and they need to go to the doctor then you need to find out who is going to handle that, and who is going to leave work early. If you can anticipate needs like this, then you will soon find that it is easier than ever for you to try and stay on top of things.

Have a Babysitter

Even the best-laid plans can fall through from time to time. That is why it is a good idea for you to have a babysitter in place. You need someone who can step in if your current babysitter cancels or if you find that your daycare is closed. If you can anticipate needs like this, then you will soon find that it is easier than ever for you to get the best result out of your hard work. Look out for the signs of baby growth spurts to prepare for any extra food or clothing they may need to avoid potential difficulties for your caregiver while you are at work.

Make your Mornings Easy

Create a routine that is consistent if you can. Ideally, your routine needs to be consistent for your child and any other family members. If you can do this, then you will be able to get out of the door faster or if you work from home, you will be able to get a much faster start.

Babies and children tend to be unpredictable, so try and be realistic and also be flexible with your schedule. If you can do this, then you will soon find that you can deal with any situation. Try and do all your preparation the night before so you aren't rushed in the morning. This can include packing up lunches and snacks, but it can also include preparing bottles and even laying out everyone’s clothes. It may also include showering, getting a diaper bag ready and just being organized in general. If you can do this, then you will soon find life is a whole lot easier.

Work Support

Make sure that you have an honest and open relationship with your employer if you can. Talk to them about illness and ask them, when you do get back to work, what their policies are for sick children. You might want to ask them if you can work from home if your child does fall ill, or if it is possible for you to work a flexible schedule. The same should apply to any doctor’s appointments. If you need two hours at an appointment, is it possible for you to make up that time in the future?

Ask About Leave

Ask about leave as well. Leave policies don’t tend to be standardized at all, so talk with your employer about baby bonding, paternity leave, personal leave, unpaid leave, sick leave and more. If you are able to do all of this then everyone will know where they stand and you may even find that it is more than possible for you to get the support you need, when you need it.

MONEY AND TIME MANAGEMENT IS KEY FOR FAMILIES

Money management tips

The first step in balancing a budget for the family is cutting costs. What expenses are easy to forego? Can you cancel your membership in the fitness club and instead go jogging in the forest for free? Helping each other out with childcare instead of hiring a childminder helps significantly to save costs. There is also potential for savings when it comes to shopping: used toys, furniture, household appliances and clothing can also be found inexpensively in second-hand shops and Internet exchanges. In addition, an insurance check makes sense too. You may want to look at Nova Science Publishers for further information and reading.

Your family is the most important thing in your life, so you want to be able to manage your finances and your time with them. You can do it!

Time management: More structure means more fun

Time management is the magic word: Bring structure to your everyday family life, organize, prioritize, plan and schedule all your duties and tasks. You will see that this is also a good way to incorporate a little “fun” into your day. And don't worry. Even if that sounds a bit exhausting now, it is actually quite simple and a matter of getting used to. If you stick to your plan, planning and prioritizing will quickly become routine.

Good planning is half the battle

Make weekly and daily to-do lists. Have a quick sit down on Sunday and make a note of what's coming up for the next week. What needs to be done as soon as possible? What is tied to fixed dates and what can you plan flexibly? Plan your week roughly and set fixed dates for cleaning, shopping and also for drinking coffee or going for a walk. Also take a close look at your “scaffolding”. How often do you go shopping in a typical week? Wouldn't a bulk purchase be enough? Are there any tasks in which the children can be involved or even take responsibility for them?

You can carry out such planning with a weekly calendar, in a notebook or diary, as a list or calendar on the mobile phone, or you can design your own bullet journal. You can add thoughts, diary entries and more to this, so that after a few weeks you will have a nice reminder to hand at the same time.

Attention time killer: Use free time wisely

Don't just plan your week ahead on Sundays. Every evening, sit down briefly and go over the next day's to-dos. Now plan the day in detail. Is cleaning on Wednesday? Set fixed and realistic time blocks. From 8 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. cleaning takes place. At 11.30 you have to start cooking for lunch. That means: You have almost an hour of free time in between. Take advantage of this. These breaks are important for you and your family.

HOW TO BE A PROTECTIVE PARENT WITHOUT GOING OVERBOARD

dad blog

The news of a new baby can send us dads into overdrive. Being a parent is about having a sense of responsibility and duty, but we also feel that need to be super protective over our offspring. And while being protective is all well and good, it is important not to go overboard in being a protective parent. When it comes to being protective, it is important to make sure that we do it in the right ways. So what are these right ways?

Addressing Your Version of “Threat”

When we have a little baby that grows into a child, that grows into an adult, the concept of threats will change. And this means that we've got to understand that threats are open to interpretation. Looking at your version of threats, do you think these are things that will realistically translate to threats for your children? Because when you start to think about the idea of what a threat is, you then think about the appropriate methods of protecting yourself. But this is when we can become somewhat overzealous.

The modern world is full of threats where many parents feel that they have to get some form of firearm or weapon to protect themselves. The standard stun gun definition and definition of a firearm is not necessarily to do with protection though, but rather as a “destructive device.” When we think about what it takes to protect our children, do weapons actually factor into our definition of threats? Because there are times when weaponry can be a valuable tool, but most of the time, there is not!

The Importance of Letting Your Children Learn to Fend for Themselves

Most fathers are worrying about threats as soon as their child is able to move around. It's important to be protective, but it's also important to remember that we all learn by mistakes. This is why having a controlled environment, rather than a strict one, is important because it allows our children the opportunities to understand the repercussions of their actions. This, however, can mean that many parents take to wrapping their baby in a security blanket of an environment, which is not going to help them learn how to fend for themselves as they get older.

It’s crucial to allow children the opportunity to do things for themselves and by putting themselves into semi-dangerous positions they can learn how to protect themselves properly. When our children are too coddled, they can find themselves struggling later in life because of being overprotected during their formative years. This could mean that they are not able to look after themselves appropriately later in life and can have an impact on their developing relationships, and could result in their relying on you for everything when they are adults themselves. Self-sufficiency is important which is why we need to allow children to make mistakes.

Teaching Them a Number of Resilience-Based Skills

You may look back on your childhood and tell yourself that your child is not going to experience the same things you had to go through, but this is where the overprotective side of you can come into play. It's so important for everybody to understand how best to deal with situations that come their way using a manner of resilience tools. We all need a healthy repertoire of skills, whether this is to defuse tension and conflict, to defend ourselves from threats, such as bullies, but also to learn how to reduce stress.

When we let stressful moments into our lives, if we find ourselves browbeaten by them, we start to shy away from things, and this can make us an easy target, and if you were an easy target in the schoolyard, now is the perfect time to teach your children skills so they can get by in life. It is always a good idea for your children to know how to defend themselves, which is completely different from learning how to fight.

Defense can mean karate lessons, but it can also be using the power of words to defuse a situation. It's also important to recognize that sometimes when there is a bully, they may not have the mental capacity to understand your child is trying to defuse the situation, and this is why sometimes, the threat of having certain skills is a very important thing to have. This goes back to the age-old idea of the child that never got bothered by bullies because of some rumor flying around that they'd beaten up someone outside of school. You don't have to go this far, but the idea is that if your child has the resilience and fortitude to send a message to the bully that they are not worth bothering, this is going to help in the long run.

It is important to be a protective parent, but we must remember that our children need to fight their own battles, as this is the key to being protective over ourselves. Because if you become a helicopter parent, you have to be prepared for the emotional backlash that will occur later in life.

HOW TO MAKE LEARNING BETTER FOR YOUR 10-YEAR-OLD

make learning better for your 10 year old

The only difference between learning schoolwork and the latest TV show’s title is that schoolwork comes with tests. When kids think about school, they think of tests and homework. Kids don’t love these aspects of school, but tests can help enhance and measure learning. To help kids, the first thing you can do is set a positive attitude towards school work.

Create A Positive Attitude Towards Schoolwork

A lot of kids ask: What’s the point of schoolwork?

And while kids may easily lose motivation from bad grades, grades don’t determine or show their true learning ability. Teachers now use individualized tests like i-Ready to identify a child’s specific strengths and weaknesses to enhance learning.

Show The Relevance Of Schoolwork To The Future

Connect schoolwork to your child’s interests and to real life. Math is all around us, for example, in the kitchen, while you are shopping or cooking. So is reading: magazines, books, road signs, websites, cartoons are all opportunities for your kids to engage with the world around them.

Empathize With Your Child

Sometimes school and learning can be challenging. Show your child that it’s OK to struggle, that they can learn from and overcome challenges. You can show them how you might struggle with something like a new recipe or a new work assignment, and give them strategies for tackling a new skill or challenge.

Embrace Tough Questions Together

Show the importance of learning the tough subjects. Let your child in on your everyday hardships to show them that allows us to grow as people.

Beyond sympathizing with low grades, help your 10-year-old improve the scores by getting hands-on in their education. If your child struggles in math, give them a math question every day. Track their math improvement using assessment tools like i-Ready levels.

Be Your Child’s Study Partner And Tutor

Take part in your child’s schoolwork by:

  • Have open conversations about schoolwork, the school, the teachers, your child’s experience, etc.
  • Use all available resources to enhance the learning experience. Use different learning styles and learning materials.
  • Discuss the things that your child learns in class and relate the lessons to real-life experience as much as possible.
  • Track your child’s academic progress. Go through your child’s i-Ready answers together, discuss their areas for growth, and celebrate successes.
  • Create a study haven for your child. Allow them to dictate what it looks like, the decoration, and who gets in their space.
  • Give your child a question every day. As they research the question, they learn a lot in the process.
  • Use every waking moment as a learning experience. Take walks and discuss the things you come across. Let your child read the labels in the supermarket for you. Ask your child to do small math tasks like calculating the change you should get from the cashier.
  • Be a role model. Share with your child your discoveries and things you know. Introduce a different perspective to learning that does not involve classrooms and teachers. Go on adventures together and teach her about the birds, the animals, the history of that place. Chances are, you will fascinate her enough to want to learn things herself.

Develop Your Child’s Love For Reading

Text is the primary way that schoolwork is presented. If your child enjoys reading, they are less resistant to books. Do these things to make your 10-year-old love reading.

  • Spend some time every day reading together. You can make it a family routine to read every day.
  • Have written materials everywhere. Get comic books, kid’s magazines, newspapers, storybooks, etc. Let your child stick papers on her walls. You can even have a reading room with books and magazine excerpts stuck on the wall.
  • Switch up between screen time and reading time. Instead of watching movies all the time, get her storybooks to entertain herself when you take away the remote.

Use Game-Based Learning

Expand beyond books. Use games to teach math and critical thinking. Games like Chess, Sudoku, joining dots, finding missing words, and other logical games enhance your child’s reasoning. Reasoning is a primary ingredient to learning. The other part is memorizing what they are taught. Brainstorming, dictations, and quizzes sharpen memory skills. Here are more examples of learning games for ten-year-olds.

game based learning

Instead of giving rewards for every study goal your son achieves, turn his goal achievements into a long-term investment.

For example, what if he earned a point for every goal achieved? When these points get to say, 100, he can get maybe an hour of screen time, or he could save and earn more points to redeem them at 500 points for his favorite toy?

It takes an average of 66 days for a task to become routine. By the 66th day, doing homework (or whatever the goal was) can become automatic. If the goal was to do a math question every day, by the 66th day that habit will be established and may lead to gains in math learning.

USING TECH TO HAVE FUN WITH YOUR KIDS

having tech fun with your kids

Many of us are spending more time at home than usual and it brings both challenges and benefits for parents. Being at home affords more time with the kids but it can be difficult to keep children and teens entertained preventing them from moaning about boredom and having nothing to do. Here are some dad tips on how to use tech to have fun with your kids that will have them geeked about spending time around the house with mom and dad.

Augmented Reality

From allowing dinosaurs to jump out of the pages of books to providing instantaneous tutorials on solving a Rubik's Cube that is in the palm of your hand there are a lot of fun and interesting uses of Augmented Reality available through today's technology. Augmented Reality (AR) provides interactive opportunities that merge real world environments with digital effects to enhance or alter perceptions of reality. From playing with Baby Yoda in our family's living room to taking a virtual tour of the Alamo seeing the site as it existed during the famous battle for Texas independence, my kids have had numerous entertaining and educational AR experiences. Whether you want to get a close up 3D look at farm animals without visiting the countryside or interact with your favorite Star Wars characters there are numerous ways to have fun with your kids utilizing augmented reality.

Robotics

Interacting with robots used to be just a fantastic idea from sci fi stories. Now utilizing robots around the house is a reality. There are robotic toys that teach kids to code and other STEM skills. Drones that you can race through obstacle courses or use for taking photography. There are even robots that can help with household chores like cleaning your swimming pool or mowing the lawn

Movies and Music Streaming

It’s great to be able to go out and catch a movie or book tickets to a gig, but you don’t have to fork out a fortune or drive for hours to have a good time. Movie and music fans can benefit from streaming services and TV and music subscriptions that provide access to endless programs, playlists and new releases. You can stream music from Amazon’s music services and enjoy your own at-home concert, watch movies with popcorn on a Saturday night and make sure you’re up to date with the TV shows that everyone is talking about.

Speaking of home concerts, you could also consider investing in additional musical equipment for your setup so that you and your children can create your own live performances. Should you both enjoy playing guitar but want to add a drummer, then you can do so without seeking extra help. You can purchase a BeatBuddy (drummer pedal) from Singular Sound, which will help you enhance your music and no longer need to fuss about controlling a drumbeat during a live performance in your home own. You can simply tap your foot and create professional feels and transitions with minimal extra effort while having fun.

Listening to music can lift your mood and movie nights are a fantastic way to bring the family together and save money on frequent trips to the movie theater. You can even star in your very own television show on YouTube.

Gaming

Gaming has become increasingly popular in the last 12 months as people look for fun ways to spend time at home and remotely socialize with friends. There are myriad options when it comes to playing games. You can play alone or as part of a team, you can challenge opponents, you can play online and you can use consoles or a PC. Technology now allows you to chat instantaneously with other players anywhere around the globe as part of game playing experiences. There are titles to suit adults and kids and you can team up to take on competitors or organize competitions between family members. Gaming provides a release and an escape from the real world and it’s an excellent way to engage with other people when you might not be able to see them face-to-face.

Exercise

You might assume that exercise and home technology don’t go hand-in-hand but tech can actually play an integral role in helping people to be more active. You can use wearable technology to count steps and set targets for yourself and your children, you can work out at home using gym equipment or you can get involved with virtual workouts and sessions that are suitable for adults or the whole family. My kids participated in a virtual running challenge during the pandemic.

Being active has advantages for all ages. As well as helping to boost heart health, lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and obesity and build strength and stamina, exercise also has incredible benefits for mental wellbeing. Moving your body makes you feel good due to increased levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain and the release of endorphins, known as happy hormones.

Dads like myself from all over the world are spending more time at home than ever before. If you’re a dad on a mission to have as much fun as possible with your kids, taking advantage of tech is a great way to accomplish that goal. You can connect with friends and family, have dance parties, have epic video game competitions and get fit with the modern conveniences that today's technological advances provide us.

HELPING KIDS DEAL WITH THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

Coronavirus
A conversation with Doctor Tim Jordan MD
My kids have been stuck at home for six weeks now since Michigan's schools were shutdown due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. They are starting to get antsy and have been expressing some anxiety over this public health emergency. I'm sure this dad blogger's family is not alone in that aspect!

Obviously it is tough enough for adults to get a grasp on what is going on around us that parents have to be conscious of how children are being impacted by the social distancing imposed upon them. After my daughter had a bit of a melt down the other day, a conversation with my wife really got me thinking about the impact this pandemic is having on our kids.  She reminded me that when we were kids we never experienced anything like this where school was cancelled, you couldn't play with friends or travel anywhere for an extended period of time. I guess the closest similarity was if you were unlucky enough to have caught chicken pox and were quarantined at home for a couple of weeks.

So I thought it might be insightful and helpful to reach out to a health care professional to delve into the impact the pandemic is having on our kids. Doctor Tim Jordan MD, a developmental and behavioral pediatrician whose practices focuses on counseling children, teens and young adults spent some time talking with ageekdaddy.com about how to help children deal with our current (but hopefully temporary) reality. He provided useful tips on ways to help kids manage anxiety and stay emotionally strong during this pandemic. I've shared our chat below and hope you find it beneficial:

Dr. Jordan has also recently released a new book, She Leads: A Practical Guide to Raising Girls Who Advocate, Influence and Lead. As a girl dad myself, with an 11 year old in 5th Grade, I want to make sure she feels empowered to live her best life. Wanting that and knowing how to parent her towards that goal are two different things. Doctor Tim's book provides a parenting handbook for moms and dads to help raise girls to become empowered women. She Leads: A Practical Guide to Raising Girls Who Advocate, Influence and Lead can be purchased at drtimjordan.com.

I hope everyone is doing well during these uncertain times. Stay Healthy! Stay Safe!

CORONAVIRUS EXPLAINED TO KIDS THROUGH ACTIVITY AND COLORING BOOKS

St Jude tips
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, one of the United States' most respected treatment centers for juvenile illness, understands that kids may have a hard time understanding and grasping what is going on when it comes to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. So St. Jude has created a coloring book for children and an activity book for tweens and teens that explains the virus in a way that is relatable to them. Additionally, the hospital has published a St. Jude Together online resource website for parents to help them talk with children about this public health emergency.

Learn About the Coronavirus Coloring Book developed for children ages 5-9:

Learn About the Coronavirus Activity Book is geared more toward “tweens” ages 10-13:

Also here are a few FAQ that St, Jude has complied answers for  providing kids regarding the pandemic:

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 stands for coronavirus disease 2019. It is the illness that you get from the virus.

What is coronavirus?

Coronavirus is a virus that can make you feel sick. It’s kind of like getting a bad cold or the flu. If you catch it, you may feel sick. You may get a fever, cough, or feel tired.

How do you know if you are sick?

Most people feel like they have a cold or the flu. You may have a fever, cough, or feel tired. Some people get a sore throat or have a runny nose or feel achy. It can be hard to notice if you are sick. That’s why it’s really important to tell someone if you start feeling bad at all.

Why do you have to wear a mask if you are sick?

Just like any sickness, you can spread germs to other people if you cough or sneeze. The germs stay inside the mask and don’t spread to others.

I am not sick. Why do I have to wear a mask?

Some people can get very sick because their body can’t fight the virus as well. Wearing a mask can help protect you from the germs that make you sick.

Can you die from coronavirus?

It is true the virus can make you very sick, but that doesn’t happen very often. Most children who get sick just have a few symptoms, like a cold or the flu. People who are very sick go to the hospital so they can have extra care. We don’t want you to be afraid, and there are lots of things that can keep us from getting sick, like handwashing and staying away from big crowds.

Can I catch coronavirus?

The virus spreads like a cold or the flu through germs. There are things we can do to keep you from catching it and spreading it to others. We are being extra good about washing our hands really well and even more than usual. Try to keep your hands away from your face, eyes, mouth, and nose. If you feel like you are going to sneeze or cough, do so into tissues or your elbow.
