BOARD GAME SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE

unboxboardom.com

Hey, Hey, Hey ... we just received a package in the mail from unboxboardom.com! A Geek Daddy was invited to participate in a review of the unboxboardom.com subscription service through this blog's affiliation with U.S. Family Guide. My family LOVES our game nights so we are excited to see what this board game subscription service has to offer.

Each month unboxboardom.com subscribers have the option of receiving one of three selected board games from the service that arrives in the mail. For those people that love game nights this is a great way to always have something fresh to play ... and who isn't GEEKED to get something fun in the mail?! So what is in the box?

Of the three choices to pick from this month, I selected FUSE because it looked to be an energetic game to play with my teens that didn't take a lot of effort to learn the rules and would be fun for the family to play together. It is a cooperative game where all the players work together pretending to be a counter-terrorism team trying to diffuse bombs planted on a ship. The clock is ticking and if you run out of time: KABOOM!

geek daddy blog

Players have to roll different colored and numbered dice to match up specific combinations on game cards to diffuse the bombs. When the dice are rolled, players must decide who will get which dice, but each player must take one and only one. To add excitement, there is a free companion app with a built in timer, sound effects, and voice overs to provide extra intensity to the game!

I'm excited for our next family game night to play FUSE. Stay tuned for my ageekdaddy.com review of our unboxboardom.com experience coming soon!

CASTLE PANIC TABLETOP GAME

Fans of the tower defense video games will be geeked about CASTLE PANIC from Fireside Games. It brings the popular genre to the realm of board games. A hoard of monsters is attacking your castle in this cooperative tabletop game. Work together to prevent your Keep from being overrun for a fun game night involving two to six players.

I took on the role of King Arthur and my son joined me as Prince Valiant as we defended Castle Bravehold versus an army of goblins, orcs and trolls. Monsters range in how menacing they are with goblins taking one hit of damage to kill, orcs two hits, and trolls require three hits of damage. They are marching on a game board divided up into grids labeled Forest, Archer, Knight, Swordsman, Castle with our castle located at the center of it all. Monsters don't attack players directly but rather destroy castle walls and towers by entering the spaces the structures occupy. If all your castle towers come crashing down, the day is lost!

Players pull from an action card deck each turn. Cards allow for players to utilize archers, knights, and swordsman to attack monsters when the monsters are in designated zones related a defender type. So, an archer can only attack a monster when it is in the archer arc, a knight in the knight arc, and swordsman in the swordsman arc. Also, the board is divided into colored zones and only your warriors that match a zone's color can attack monsters within it.

Cards can also be pulled that allow players to utilize a tar cauldron to slow down the approaching army as well as fortify or rebuild walls. Players can trade cards and strategize how to cooperatively attack monsters and utilize special actions to be victorious against the hoard. All the monster tokens must be exhausted and at least one castle tower still standing for the players to prevail.

The game begins with a number of designated monster tokens prepositioned on the playing board as instructed in the rulebook. Each player has their own turn to draw cards and engage in actions. Following each player's turn their is a blind draw to add two more random monsters into game play. A dice roll determines where each of the monsters is placed on the board. All monsters start in the forest arc where they can't be hit or damaged by castle defenders. The monster then moves one arc closer to the castle each player turn unless they are stopped by the players.

Each monster is a triangle shaped cardboard token with artwork depicting it. The number of hit points of the character is printed on the tips of the triangle and the highest number should be pointed towards the castle. As the monster takes damage the triangle is spun around to show the existing amount pointing in the direction it is marching. So, if a troll with three hit points takes a point of damage by an archer and another point of damage by a knight, it will show 1 point as it enters the swordsman arc. If players knock a monster's hit points to zero, the token is removed from the board and can't be replayed.

In addition to the general warrior goblins, orcs and trolls there are also Boss Monsters that can randomly appear during the token blind draws. Each has a special effect that goes into effect when they are first drawn. After that, these monsters behave like regular warriors. The Boss Monsters in the CASTLE PANIC base game are:

GOBLIN KING

The Goblin King never arrives alone. When his token is pulled, draw three more monster tokens to go along with his. All four tokens are placed immediately within the forest arc.

ORC WARLORD

Place this fierce military commander in the forest. Then immediately move all the monsters on the board, including the Orc Warlord, one arc forward.

TROLL MAGE

The Troll Mage emboldens all monsters to press the attack. Just like the Orc Warlord every monster on the board moves forward one arc in the same turn the Troll Mage is placed on the board.

GOBLIN HEALER

When this healer is placed on the board, all monsters immediately regain one point lost to damage. Fortunately, this is a one-time effect, yet it can still have a major impact in pushing forward or extinguishing a wave of the monsters' assault.

The difficulty level of a game of CASTLE PANIC can be impacted by adding or reducing types of tokens. For example, not including trolls in the game essentially creates an easy mode. For our first game, to moderate the difficulty a bit, we included all the goblin, orc and troll warriors, but only utilized the Goblin King and Healer tokens out of the Monster Bosses. There were a few waves of monsters where we may have been overwhelmed if the Orc Warlord and Troll Mage appeared and instituted their special effects. So, the Monster Bosses absolutely impact how challenging of a game you play.

Passing cards back and forth while talking through our actions was working out well; but then we had some bad card draws and suddenly our castle walls were breached. I had two mortar cards in my hand but couldn't use them without combining them with brick cards to rebuild the walls. Prince Valiant though pulled two brick cards in his draw!

We were able to repair the breach just before the monsters were able to surge in. Then in our next few turns cut down the attackers fending off this wave of their assault. This gave us a chance to catch our breath and stock up on our arsenal of action cards.

We weren't guaranteed victory yet though. We had a succession of monster draws that brought out a challenging group of reinforcements made up mostly of trolls and orcs which are no pushover to defeat. Then things got worse as the Goblin King and Healer arrived on the battlefield to reinforce the monster army assault on Castle Bravehold.

It appeared as all might be lost as the trolls began to overwhelm us. But then there was a glimmer of hope. The last of the monster tokens was drawn! We just had to outlast those that were on the game board before they tore down the towers within our keep. Could we hold out?

We had some luck come our way! The Prince pulled during one of his turns a "Draw 2 Cards" action card to let us add extra attacks to our defense. He was determined to valiantly fight the enemy!

While he was fighting off the hoard, I took charge of fortify a wall and pour down some tar to slow down the attackers buying us some extra time.

Yet the monster army didn't cease their push to destroy the castle! They began tearing down the castle's walls and towers. Two towers fell! If all the towers fell, we lose the game. Damage done to the monsters as they tore down the castle and the aid of a Barbarian helped us clear out the intruders from within it.

Then suddenly victory was in our grasp! There was only one monster left on the board. A hero dispatched it and then there were no combatants left to assault us. We had outlasted the monster army. We were victorious!

The game lasted about an hour and we had a really fun time playing it. It is recommended for ages 8 & up making it a nice selection for a family game night. It has rules that are easy for kids to grasp but yet the game play is challenging enough to keep adults like this Geek Daddy entertained. Based upon the good time my son and I had playing CASTLE PANIC it absolutely earns a Geek Daddy nod of approval.

The game utilized cardboard game pieces instead of plastic miniatures which also contributes to it having a younger player skew then tabletop games tend to be averaging these days. I've been getting a little tired of painting gaming miniatures lately and liked the mechanics of using CASTLE PANIC'S cardboard tokens so that didn't interfere with our enjoyment of playing it. For those who really want to play CASTLE PANIC with miniature figures there is a Deluxe version coming out that features those style of game pieces.

Additionally, for the basic edition of CASTLE PANIC there are expansion boxes to add variety to the game. The Wizard's Tower provides magic spells that you can use to fend off the monster army; as well as adds new combatants to battle such as imps, centaurs and ogres; and new bosses to challenge you including a basilisk, chimera, and dragon to fight. Crowns and Quests provides an element of role playing presenting players with twelve characters that have unique abilities who are charged with going on up to 18 different side quests that compliment the overall game play. Once you've played a few games of CASTLE PANIC add some expansion packs to keep it exciting.

DICE THRONE CHRISTMAS

dice throne

We're having some DICE THRONE Christmas-time fun playing the SANTA v KRAMPUS edition of the game. I picked up this DICE THRONE box set featuring the two characters in a Kickstarter campaign by Roxley Games earlier this year. It's a DICE THRONE CHRISTMAS battling these two holiday spirits against one another in this tabletop game.

In DICE THRONE a player during his or her turn can roll dice up to three times to activate character's unique attack modes that are triggered by certain configurations of the roll of the die. An opponent can then roll dice to defend against attacks. Characters also have special abilities that can be utilized and upgraded during the game. Plus, players also have a deck of action cards that can be used to manipulate dice rolls or empower other actions to surprise foes. DICE THRONE combines strategy and an element of luck in a fast-paced game of role-playing gladiatorial combat.

SANTA

dice throne

Don't let his festive cheer, jolly smile and mugs full of egg nog lull you into a false sense of security. For those on the naughty list, you better watch out. You better not pout. Santa Claus is coming to pound!

Santa has a two positive status effects that can be earned during a game that are represented by tokens. These can be gained to provide positive benefits for your character or inflicted to deal some pain to your opponent. Status effects tend to be earned through being incorporated into an attack mode or granted via an action card. Santa's status effects are cheer and egg nog.

Cheer allows Santa to re-roll or change one of your die in a roll to a 6. Santa can cash in one cheer token to re-roll one of their dice. He can spend three tokens to change any one die to a 6 after a roll. Santa has a limit of holding no more than 3 cheer tokens in hand.

Santa can get a number of different benefits from Egg Nog. He can spend up to three Egg Nog tokens to provide him the opportunity to roll one die at any time to trigger a bonus effect. Santa can hold up to 5 Egg Nog tokens in hand.

dice throne christmas

On an Egg Nog roll if Santa gets an Axe symbol die he deals 2 pts of damage to an opponent that is undefendable. If Santa rolls a holiday bell, he gains 2 pts of health and gains 1 combat point. Combat points are spent to utilize action cards and some character abilities. If he rolls the Christmas Star, Santa gets 2 pts of health and draws 1 action card to add to his deck.

Santa has some truly festive attack modes. His "Trim Your Tree" attack involves rolling for axe symbols. If you get three axes that deals out 4 pts of damage to your opponent; four axes deals out 6 pts; and five deals out 8 pts. "Rosey Cheeks" is triggered by getting a small straight (1-4) which gains Santa 1 cheer token, then has him give out 6 pts of damage + an additional 1 damage point per Cheer tokens in his hand. "Reindeer Games" can be used with a large straight (1-5) created from one or a combination of your three dice rolls during a turn. This attack provides Santa with one Cheer token and two Egg Nog tokens then deals 4 pts of damage + 1 pt per Egg Nog in your hand + 1 pt per Cheer token. There are only five dice so you can never have six dice in a straight or one of a kind.

dice throne santa

The Christmas Star die has a lot of power for Santa in DICE THRONE. A configuration of three Axes and two Christmas Stars unleashes "Festivities" which provides Santa with 2 Egg Nog tokens and doles out 7 pts of damage to an opponent. Four Christmas Star symbols triggers the "Holly Jolly" attack mode which gains Santa 2 Cheer tokens + 3 Egg Nog tokens and deals 6 undefendable damage points. Five Christmas Star dice provide you with "Comfort and Joy"...the ultimate attack! Santa gains 4 Egg Nog tokens, gives out 10 pts of damage and immediately gets an additional Offensive Roll Phase allowing to start a new attack from scratch right away skipping the opponent's turn.

When it comes to Defense, Santa Claus can "Egg Noggin' It." After an opponent finishing rolling the dice during their Offensive Roll Phase, Santa can roll four dice. For every Holiday Bell rolled, he gets an Egg Nogg token. For every Christmas Star rolled, Santa gets a Cheer token. While these don't directly off-set damage pts inflicted, Santa's defense does provide some nice ways to counter attacks.

KRAMPUS

dice throne krampus

At Christmas, Krampus brings bad tidings and coal to all who have misbehaved. And if he wasn't rotten enough on his own, Krampus has also scavenged through abandoned gifts and brough to life an army of minions. These Rejects love to support Krampus in causing great discomfort and pain!

Krampus has a negative and a positive status effect available to him. The negative is that he can give out coal tokens to opponents that prevent them from obtaining combat points. After an opponent has accumulated four coal tokens, the next time they would gain combat points they must remove all the coal tokens from their character board which has the effect of reducing the amount of points they would have earned by 1 pt. To be honest I'm not that impressed by this effect.

Krampus' positive status effect is that he can earn gift tokens. He can have up to three of these tokens at any time. Krampus can spend these tokens to add a Reject companion into the game.

A Reject companion put into play can be used immediately or you can wait to utilize the benefits it provides your character. Be strategic because there are action cards that can be combined with Rejects to really add some mischief to a game. Once you activate a Reject's ability to use against an opponent then it is discarded so don't just use them whilly-nilly. Rejects are an awesome way to overpower an opponent which can give Krampus a real edge in duels.

dice throne christmas

Krampus main attack is to use a switch to swat opponents. Three dice with a switch symbol deal 5 damage points; four deal 6 damage pts; and five deal 7 pts. A small straight (1-4) causes some "Misbehaving" gaining Krampus a gift (which can be used to gain a Reject) plus deals 7 pts of damage. A large straight (1-5) lets you add one Reject or activate the powers of a Reject in play without having to discard it thereby letting Krampus use it again in another turn. Plus, a large straight causes 9 pts of damage to an opponent.

The Horns symbol has a lot of power for Krampus. Rolling four Horns lets him gain a gift token, add a Reject companion, inflict 2 coal tokens on an opponent and deal them 9 pts of damage. Rolling five Horn dice creates "Discomfort and Pain" with Krampus' ultimate attack. He gains a Gift token, adds 2 Reject companions, and deals 10 points of damage. Plus, he may activate one Rejects powers without having to discard it afterward.

dice throne game

Krampus defense is "Deviled Eggs." He rolls three dice after an attack. If he gets two Switches, Krampus inflicts a Coal token on an opponent. If he rolls a Present, he gains a Gift token. If he gets a Horned symbol on his dice roll, Krampus deals back 1 pt of damage for each Reject he has in play.

So, which character is your favorite? The demonly Krampus with his Rejects or the saintly Santa with his Christmas cheer? Both of these characters can also be played against those in other DICE THRONE editions. How do you think Santa Claus would fare in a battle against Thor? Who would have the upper hand Krampus or Loki? Which other characters from the Marvel edition of DICE THRONE would you like to see Santa or Krampus battle against?

DICE THRONE MARVEL EDITION

marve dice throne game

Warriors from multiple dimensions and times have been transported to a gladiatorial arena to engage in combat to see who is the greatest champion among them in the dice-rolling tabletop game DICE THRONE. This Yahtzee inspired dueling game from Roxley Game involves the tactical use of unique abilities and the manipulation of dice rolls to battle opponents who roleplay from a fantastic lineup of characters ranging from a Barbarian to a Vampire Lord. It is a fun, fast-paced game that is complemented by fabulous artwork incorporated into its components.

And now players can take on the roles of characters from the Marvel Universe in their DICE THRONE battles. The Marvel Edition of DICE THRONE incorporates the Scarlet Witch, Miles Morales Spider-Man, Loki and Thor into gameplay. Battle in one-on-one duels or multiple player battle royals among these Marvel characters or incorporate them into gladiator matches versus warriors from any other published DICE THRONE game. Pit Spider-Man versus Shadow Thief, Scarlet Witch against a Monk, Thor taking on Paladine, or Loki engaging against the Tactician for example.

This Geek Daddy took on Groot to see who would come out on top in the sibling rivalry between Thor and Loki a DICE THRONE Marvel Edition bout. Thor has strong attacks to overpower adversaries; but Loki utilizes illusion and trickery to his advantage. We studied the rules and got ready to jump into the DICE THRONE arena playing as the Gods of Thunder and Mischief. Every player character starts with a set number of health points and the first combatant to reach 0 loses.

op games

The game starts off with each player rolling a die. Highest roll gets to go first in the turns. Each player starts off four action cards in their hand that can impact offensive and defensive moves by your character. You can accumulate up to six cards in your hand at any given time during the game. You also start with 2 combat points which are a currency that is needed to play action cards or to potentially utilize some of a character's unique abilities and skills. For example, action cards range from 0 - 2 combat points to activate. The game includes health and combat point trackers for each character to make keeping track of these stats easy.

Every turn starts with a player gaining 1 combat point and drawing an action card. At this time a player can also discard a card from their hand to buy 1 combat point. Next the player can roll any number of their five dice up to three times to activate a single offensive ability. Players can either utilize the numbers on the dice or the symbols to activate different attacks and defenses. So, in my first roll Thor the die had the numbers showing 1,3,3,5,6. I kept the 1 and one of the 3s and re-rolled 3, 5 and 6. The second roll came up as a 1, 2 and 6. I kept the 2 and rerolled the 1 and 6. My third roll came up a 4 and a 1. That gave me a small straight 1,2,3,4 which triggered a lightning rod attack dealing 7 points of damage to Loki.

dice throne marvel edition

Opposing players though can attempt to Defend against an attack. Each character has a unique defense ability. Loki's don't really prevent damage but allow him to essentially utilize or gain a skill or ability from any roll of the die during his defense move. In this situation, Loki's roll of the die allowed him to gain another action card but he still had to subtract 7 points from his initial 50.

Now it was Loki's turn. Groot drew a card to add to his hand and added one to his combat points moving him to 3 on his dial tracker. On his first roll of the die, Groot's dice showed three with scepter symbols and two with illusion symbols. Loki then inflicted his confuddle attack upon Thor which inflicted two status effects plus seven points of damage upon Thor.

dice throne

Each character may have one or more status effects which are represented by tokens. Positive or Negative status effects can be gained or inflicted on yourself or other players. Status effects are usually activated or inflicted via dice rolls activating an offensive ability, such as Loki's Confuddle attack, or through a player utilizing an action card to trigger one.

dice throne marvel

Loki actually has three status effects that he can utilize: Illusion, Bag of Tricks, and Spellbound. Loki utilized these status effects to negatively impact and damage his opponents more than direct attacks against them. When combating Loki he will try to have your head spinning with these status effects.

Utilizing Illusion, when Loki is attacked he can present the other player with three face down Illusion cards. The attacking player picks one card to flip over and resolves the attack based upon the text on the card. Illusion could have no impact at all on an attack or could totally eliminate any negative impact on him.

loki status effects

Loki's bag of tricks makes a player who has been inflicted with the status effect to remove it at the beginning of the next turn after it has been inflicted by rolling one die. On a roll of 1, the player loses one combat point; on a roll of 2-5, Loki chooses whether the player heals two health points, gains one combat point, or receives two damage points; on a roll of 6, Loki gains two combat points. Bag of Tricks is especially valuable when there are multiple players in a game who Loki may want to ally with and in 1x1 combat Loki can potentially up his own health or combat points from its use.

Spellbound allows Loki to limit an opponent's attacks. When inflicted, a token is placed so that it covers the name of an opponent's offensive ability. Loki can use this to eliminate another player's easy to gain attacks such as the high and low straight triggered offensive abilities. This causes the attacker to be more reliant on the luck of the roll of dice and could befuddle offensive options against Loki,

dice throne

dice throne

Thor has two status effects of his own: Guard Break and Electrokinesis. Utilizing Guard Break, Thor can roll one die after completing his offensive roll phase. If the outcome is 1-3, Thor's attack becomes undefendable! The Electrokinesis status effects can be used to boast Thor's abilities or cashed in to draw one action card.

Thor also has a companion, his trusty weapon Mjolnir, which has its own special rules and is represented by its own token of the magical hammer. Throwing Mjolnir provides one point of undefendable damage against an opponent. Mjolnir is thrown or retrieved by discarding an action card or by triggering an offensive ability that includes throw or retrieve instructions upon it. Mjolnir can be a game breaker for Thor if he uses it strategically.

marvel dice throne

Who do you think prevailed in this epic battle between Loki and Thor?! To find out, I encourage you to play out your own DICE THRONE Marvel Edition game to see who comes out on top. Which of the two is your favorite?

LOKI VS THOR

Reveling in trickery, Loki the God of Mischief must be found hiding among his Illusions. Befuddling his foes with a deft hand, he will put a spell on you. Caution is advised when he smiles and graciously gives you a gift as his bags of tricks might backfire in your face.

marvel dice throne loki

Thor's attacks sizzle with energy, pushing the God of Thunder to new levels of power that can penetrate all manner of defenses. When he grasps the handle of Mjolnir, his legendary companion, he can call forth the lightning from the storm to bring low all his enemies.

Also joining the DICE THRONE fray are four more Marvel characters available in expansion packs. Marvel DICE THRONE 2-Hero Boxes let players bring Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Black Widow and Doctor Strange into the action. Captain Marvel's cosmic rays, Black Panther's Vibranium suit, Doctor Strange's Premonition and Black Widow's Time Bomb create a variety of new scenarios for players to engage in during DICE THRONE duels.

marvel dice throne

DICE THRONE is recommended for ages 8 years and older. It has an average game time of a half hour per match. These Marvel versions of DICE THRONE are available from The OP Games and are fully compatible with other Roxley Games editions of the game.

Who is geeked about the Marvel Edition of DICE THRONE? Which character are you most excited to play as? I'm looking forward to playing some matches as Dr. Strange!

MS MARVEL AND SHE-HULK MARVEL UNITED GAME NIGHT

Marvel United Game Night

Excited about the upcoming Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk live action series coming to the Disney+ streaming service, my daughter and I had some game night fun this weekend with these new leading ladies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Carnage is on a rampage in New York City and it is up to Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk to foil the villain's master plan in this game of MARVEL UNITED. It won't be easy as this alien symbiote has a number of offspring to battle before you can go head to head with him. Plus he is continuously transforming more people around the City into dangerous clones of himself that speed up the time frame of his master plan coming to fruition.

Ms Marvel She-Hulk Marvel United Game

Why is Carnage trying to infiltrate the labs of Stark Industries and Oscorp while flooding New York City with an army of monstrous Symbiotic clones? Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk leap into action to battle this evil threat! They don't have much time though ... if Carnage completes ten turns he WINS and that timeline speeds up as he assimilates innocent bystanders as hosts for the Symbiote organisms that make up his alien army. There is no time to waste in stopping Carnage!

Carnage belongs to a race of amorphous extraterrestrial organisms known as Symbiotes, which form a symbiotic bond with their hosts and give them super-human abilities. Carnage has no regard for life and a desire to promote total chaos. Yet he can be methodological and meticulous in his plots to become the dominate lifeform on the planet.

Ms. Marvel is a leading character in Marvel's development of a diverse lineup of superheroes appealing and relatable to new generations of young fans. This Pakistani-American hero has the power to shapeshift being able to transform her body to do feats such as elongating her limbs or enlarging her fists. Ms. Marvel often teams up with Squirrel Girl and America Chavez to create an amazing trio of girl power that can give any bad guy a run for their money!

After getting a blood transfusion from her cousin Bruce Banner, Jennifer Walters gained all the powers of the Hulk without losing her personal consciousness or sense of conscious in fighting for justice as the She-Hulk. She is a combination of brains and brawn! In addition to her solo crime fighting endeavors, She-Hulk has also been a part of the Avengers and Fantastic Four superhero teams.

Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk have a lot to take on in a limited amount of time. Before the can even tackle Carnage head on, this super duo must clear threats from four locations and either defeat nine Symbiotes or rescue nine bystanders. Plus, in this MARVEL UNITED game scenario the heroes must also defeat three of Carnage's henchmen in combat before unlocking the big boss char acter for a final showdown.

Ms Marvel
She Hulk

We focused on the tackling the henchmen and clearing location threats as our first priority. She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel tore through the henchmen and unlocked three of the four locals trying to move forward to battle one-on-one with Carnage. Unfortunately, Carnage was able to capture numerous people off of New York's streets adding them to his alien army and speeding up the completion of his master plan by giving him some extra jumps ahead on the Spawn Track further reducing the number of turns She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel had to work with. BAM! The villain was victorious this game night.

Ms Marvel vs Carnage

Doah! Unfortunately, you can't win every game; but it is fun trying! Win or lose it is always a good time playing MARVEL UNITED during a family game night. Looking forward to a rematch against Carnage and watching the Disney+ Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk tv shows.
