GHOSTBUSTERS FROZEN EMPIRE MOVIE REVIEW

Thank you Sony Pictures for inviting me to the Detroit premiere of GHOSTBUSTER: FROZEN EMPIRE that was held at Emagine Theatres' Royal Oak, Michigan location. The Ghostbusters franchise celebrates forty years of busting ghosts with a new sequel to the hit summer flick of 1984 that started it all...the original GHOSTBUSTERS movie. GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE is rated PG-13 for supernatural action/violence, language and suggestive references by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) though from this dad's perspective I didn't see anything particularly troubling that would be prohibitive of younger viewers who aren't inclined to having nightmares about ghosts from seeing it.

GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE returns the franchise to New York City after its cross country road trip to Oklahoma in the last movie. To honor the legacy of Egon Spengler and reward his daughter and grandkids for their contributions in foiling a new plot by Gozer the Gozerian to unleash anarchy, Winston Zeddemore bankrolls Spengler's daughter Callie (Carrie Coon) and her two children Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) to reinitiate the Ghostbusters business in New York City. They bring along with them the kids former science teacher and Callie's current love interest, Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd) as part of the Spengler family making up the new Ghostbusters team.

The movie begins with a haunting flashback scene and a fun, energetic ghost chase that highlight why this franchise can captivate you and has developed such a fanatic following with cosplayers and fan clubs around the world. Starting off the film with the Ghostbusters return to New York City and the campy tone of the original movies shows why this franchise is beloved by so many people forty years after the original movie debuted. I was GEEKED as the movie rolled through its first scenes that this might be the best Ghostbusters movie yet.

Yet then the movie's pace began to freeze like the victim's of the ghostly menace emerging to threaten the Big Apple. A big part of the movie begins to focus on a teen angst side plot involving Phoebe that while played well by Grace just is to be honest is awkward and awful dragging down the energy of the movie and really just was not very enjoyable to watch. Additionally, a lot of the one-liners and physical comedy that makes Ghostbusters entertaining were falling flat in this movie not causing me to chuckle while it was obvious that was the intent of the Director. The slow pacing along with a lack of ghost busting action scenes and moments that generated enthusiasm for the movie by the audience laughing out loud together put a damper on the film for me.

I really enjoyed GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE but one criticism was that it lacked a character with the appeal of Rick Moranis' Louis Tully. GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE attempts to address that with the inclusion of comedian Kumail Nanjiani who takes on a similar, though more heroic role, as Louis Tully. While I give credit to Nanjiani for having some nice moments in the movie, overall his role in the movie falls flat contributing to a lack of positive energy in the vibe of the film. I see what the film's producers were trying to accomplish with Nanjiani's casting and character but unfortunately in my opinion they whiffed in the effort.

The film also brought back two popular characters from GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE for some continuity between the movies, Lucky (Celeste O'Connor) and Podcast (Logan Kim). Lucky's role is puzzling because she has an important leadership role in a new paranormal research center Winston has created to support the new Ghostbusters' operations but states she is in town just for a "summer internship." Lucky also was a love interest of Trevor Spengler in the last movie but there is no connection between the characters, not event as friends of colleagues, in this film. Podcast has run away from home pretending to be at Space Camp so he can live with Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) over the summer to learn more about paranormal investigating. Aykroyd and Kim have some nice scenes together but it lacks the same impressive chemistry the Podcast actor had with Phoebe Spengler in Afterlife which is a detraction instead of an improvement from the previous film.

The film adds two shining performances in engineer James Acaster (Lars Pinfield) who plays a believable science geek and scheming specter Melody (Emily Alyn Lind) who provides a nice performance for a poorly scripted role. GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE also brings back a key adversary from the original 1984 film, Environmental Protection Agency investigator Walter Peck (William Atherton) who is now Mayor of New York. Atherton's character remains as unlikeable as ever and just as much as a thorn in the side of the Ghostbusters.

There are some nice nostalgic moments in GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE including returning to the original Ghostbusters firehouse headquarters and the library featured in the first movie. There are also some nice cameos including super geek Patton Oswalt and Slimer the ghost. I have to admit the Slimer scenes are great!

Of course, the remaining living Ghostbusters, Ray, Winston and Venkman (Bill Murray) along with their assistant Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts) suit up to help save the day. The big climatic battle scene that brings together the new and old Ghostbusters isn't overly dramatic which is disappointing with Ray, Melnitz, Venkman and Winston more being there to be in the moment than contributing to overcoming the movie's primary threat. Yet, seeing the four of them suited up with proton packs is a nostalgic treat for any Ghostbusters fan.

GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE also brings back the popular miniature Stay Puft marshmallow men from the last movie. They engage in similar hijinks as in Afterlife. They also are featured in a mid-credits post-movie scene. So, don't run out of the theater as the credits roll though you don't need to stay for the entire scroll through them.

All in all if you are a diehard Ghostbusters fan this is a must-see at a theater on the big screen. For casual fans it can be a pass though I did find it entertaining enough to recommend having you pick it up on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD or Digital for a family move night when it eventually is released on home video. You can preorder the home entertainment release now on Amazon.com. GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE gets a three out of five star Geek Daddy review.

2024 AUTORAMA HIGHLIGHTS

2024 autorama

Over the weekend, the annual AUTORAMA show was taking place at the Huntington Place convention center in downtown Detroit. More than 800 classic cars and customized hotrods were showcased during the event. When you live in the Motor City it is part of the region's car culture that fathers and sons bond over checking out cool rides. My boy and I did exactly that spending some quality time together enjoying all that AUTORAMA had to offer.

Here is a highlight reel of our walk around the AUTORAMA show floor:

My son's favorite car at AUTORAMA was this souped-up Ford Mustang. He'd love to take that out for a spin on a track! That car has some nice Motor City muscle!

2024 autorama hightlights

This gritty street racer with an Old English D on the grill caught my attention. Piecing together a vehicle to race against your buddies on a rural dirt road or urban back alley for drag racing bragging rights is like an elixir of youth for a middle-aged dad like me. So, this was one of my favorite cars on display at this year's AUTORAMA.

IMPROVING YOUR CHILD'S RC CAR DRIVING EXPERIENCE: A GUIDE FOR PARENTS

remote control cars

Remote-controlled (RC) cars are a popular choice among kids for playtime fun. However, the joy of controlling these miniature vehicles can sometimes be overshadowed by frustration when maneuvering becomes difficult.

Besides, let’s be honest here. How many parents have had to secretly replace or throw off an RC toy that got damaged in a matter of days? Kids are all sorts of fun, but they can go through toys fairly quickly. RC cars are always at high risk because not every child gets the hang of it!

Why you need to improve the driving experience
Children, especially those with limited driving experience, can find it challenging to control RC toys effectively.

Maneuvering the car around obstacles or through tight spaces requires a certain level of skill and coordination. Without prior experience, kids may struggle to navigate smoothly, leading to frustration and dissatisfaction with the toy. For instance, kids who don’t know how to ride a bicycle are more likely to crash their RC car!

Additionally, repeated instances of the car getting stuck can diminish the enjoyment of the play experience. By enhancing the driving experience, you can help your child overcome these challenges and fully enjoy their RC car adventures.

Choosing an age-appropriate toy
There’s no secret here. Selecting the right RC car for your child's age and skill level is crucial in ensuring an enjoyable play experience. Opt for models that are specifically designed for beginners or young children, and that are easy to navigate. These typically feature simplified controls and are easier to operate. Look for cars with rugged designs and bulky sizes, as these factors contribute to greater stability and control. Avoid purchasing advanced models with complex features that may overwhelm or frustrate your child.

Installing bearings
One effective way to improve the performance of an RC car is by installing bearings. Bearings are small metal components that reduce friction between moving parts, such as wheels and axles. By replacing the stock bushings with bearings, you can enhance the car's efficiency and maneuverability. The good news is: You can find plenty of YouTube tutorials on how to replace those for RC toys, and you can find cost-effective quality bearings from specialist suppliers, such as this Chinese bearing manufacturer

You won’t believe the difference bearings can make. They enable the car to move more freely, so it becomes easier for kids to control. Another advantage of bearings, they help prolong the life of the car by reducing wear and tear on critical components.

Installing suspensions
Another modification that can significantly enhance the driving experience is installing custom suspensions. We all know what suspensions do. They absorb shocks and vibrations. They do exactly the same for toy cars and help create a smoother ride on various terrains.

For RC cars, especially those controlled by beginners, custom suspensions can make a world of difference in handling and stability. They allow you to adjust the car's ride height and stiffness to suit your child's preferences and driving style, and to accommodate the terrain. So, if you’ve got a bumpy yard, this is a golden opportunity!

In conclusion, there’s so much you could do to create a fun RC experience for a younger or less experienced kid. When you think it only takes a few modifications for your kids to drive the RC car with confidence and ease, there’s no reason not to do it!

In Photosynthesis, take your trees through their life-cycle, from seedling to full bloom to rebirth, and earn light points as their leaves collect energy from the revolving sun’s rays. Carefully pick where you sow and when you grow, as trees in the shadows are blocked from light, and from light points. Players score light points if their trees are in the direct lines of sun rays or taller than the trees blocking them from the sun rays. In a second phase, players use their light points to reserve seeds or trees, then plant or grow them on the board. Points are scored by maturing trees and removing them from the board.

NEW ALBUM FROM JESSA CAMPBELL AND THE SAPLINGS

jessa campell and the saplings

Bringing a funky flair to dynamic music that celebrates the rich biodiversity of the forest, FOREST FLOW, the second album for families from Parents’ Choice Award-winning Jessa Campbell & the Saplings, was released today. Forest Flow is available on all major music platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and Bandcamp. This new album from Jessa Campbell and the Saplings incorporates elements of hip-hop, pop, dance, and folk to create a fun, engaging kindie music experience that kids will love.

From her home in Portland, Oregon, Jessa Campbell writes upbeat, danceable, STEM- and ecology-based songs that are inspired by the musical tastes of her own children and informed by the styles of the adult bands with which she regularly performs. Forest Flow is a collaborative album, weaving together contributions from some of Jessa’s favorite artists and friends: GRAMMY-nominated hip-hop musician SaulPaul, LDW (Portland’s Talking Heads tribute and new wave/funk band), TravisT of Eastern Sunz (multi-award-winning hip-hop duo), Palo-Mah (Mexican-American folk songstress), and Native hip-hop artist 2 8 Tha Native.

While its focus is on ecology and STEM-related topics, FOREST FLOW avoids feeling preachy or didactic. Instead, the songs are playful and imaginative, encouraging kids to explore the natural world, discover its wonders for themselves, and get up and move their bodies. Age-appropriate and easy-to-sing-along-with lyrics make Forest Flow wonderful for family car rides or dance parties at home.

forest flow album

The album kicks off with “Rainbow Flow,” which features two-time GRAMMY-nominated Saul Paul and is already receiving airplay on SiriusXM’s Kids Place Live. “Movement is Chemistry,” a Talking Heads-inspired synth-pop number that is also receiving airplay on Kids Place Live, was written with and features LDW. On “Vuela, Vuela, Fly,” Palo-Mah and Campbell sing a bilingual story about monarch butterflies who start out as eggs on milkweed plants in the United States and end up traveling all the way to Mexico, where the song’s lyrics change to Spanish.

“For this album with the newer pop/dance/hip-hop sound that I’m bringing to the table, my band is made up of musicians who play with LDW,” Campbell commented to ageekdaddy.com. “These fabulous musicians are top notch players who really take the show to the next level for families. LDW’s lead singer, Lawrence Orleck, and I have been performing together for 8 years in that ensemble! Since we both have 7-year-olds, we decided it was time to write some funky music for our kids, whose musical tastes have expanded since the 2019 release of my previous kids’ album, the folk-oriented Can You Feel It?”

Make learning fun by incorporating STEM into fun things like music has been one of my parenting mantras. So, I'm GEEKED that Jessica Campbell has provided me with some free digital download codes for FOREST FLOW to giveaway. If you have a preschool or elementary school aged child in your life don't miss out on this blog giveaway!

Just complete the rafflecopter entries below before 11:59pm ET on June 18, 2023 for a chance to get FOREST FLOW for free. Winners will be randomly selected from all eligible entries. Must be a United States resident 18 years or older to participate in this promotion. Good luck!

Jessa Campbell bridges the worlds of music and ecology, enchanting young audiences with the wonders of nature through her songs. With a background that includes performing in the national touring production of the hit television show Dragon Tales, Jessa is no stranger to children’s entertainment. She has traveled the world as lead singer/dancer on Holland America world cruises, sung backup for Wayne Newton, and headlined many festivals with Portland-based LDW (Talking Heads tribute and original funk band) and Taken by the Sky (Fleetwood Mac tribute band, in which Jessa performs as “Stevie Nicks”). Jessa has studied with Lorna Luft, Barry Manilowe, and Doug Hallenbeck, and she has also been privileged to learn from several world-renowned vocal teachers during time spent performing at the Chautauqua Opera House.

She began writing ecology-based songs with her young students in a “Wonders of Nature” class at a local learning center. Together, they explored simple science concepts through music, which ultimately led to the creation of Jessa’s first family album, Can You Feel It? released in 2019. Can You Feel It? landed a Parents’ Choice Silver Award, was featured on SiriusXM’s Kids Place Live channel, and enjoyed the "High Five Album of the Week" spotlight on Australia’s Kinderling Kids Radio.

SEVEN CAR BASICS EVERY VEHICLE OWNER SHOULD KNOW

Owning a car, especially for the first time, is an exciting experience. It’s a sign of adulthood and that you’ve grown up. It comes with quite a few responsibilities, however, and you’ll need to actually take care of your car. That’s where many first-time owners can get overwhelmed.

With a few car basics you need to know, you shouldn’t have a problem getting started with this. You’ll not only be in a better position to maintain your car, but you’ll have everything you need if you run into any issues.

As complicated as these can seem, it’ll be much easier than you’d assume. With seven particular car basics, you wouldn’t have a problem with your new car.

Car Basics You Need To Know: 7 Important Tips

1. Get Some Emergency Kits

No matter how new a car is, there’s always a chance it could break down. That’ll happen even if you’ve spent a decent bit of time and money maintaining it. You’ll need to be prepared for this to happen at any point, so it’s worth having some emergency kits in your car. A roadside kit also wouldn’t go amiss.

When you’re putting these together, make sure there’s a first aid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, a tow rope, and similar items. They’ll make sure you’re able to look after your car and stay safe while you wait for someone to come out and fix your car for you. Since there’s no telling when a breakdown can happen, it’s worth always having these kits in your car.

2. Have A Spare Tire

When you first buy a car, it’ll likely come with a spare tire. If it doesn’t, it’s worth investing in one. You’d be surprised by how often you could need to replace a tire, and it’s always worth making sure you have something to replace it with. It’ll avoid the need to call out a professional just for a flat tire.

There’s usually the space for these spares in the boot, so you shouldn’t have to worry about having somewhere to keep it. When you need it, it’s simply a matter of switching it for the flat or burst tire. Make sure to pick up a new spare when you can to have one whenever you need it.

3. Get It Inspected

Car inspections are vital to making sure your vehicle runs smoothly. In many places, they’re legally mandatory, so you’ll need to know when to get a state inspection and where to go. Usually, there aren’t any problems with this, and it’s just a matter of taking the time to get it done.

If there are any problems with your vehicle, the inspection will highlight them and you can get them fixed. Since it helps keep your car running properly, there’s no reason not to get this done.

4. Replace Fluids

Your car needs various fluids to operate properly, but these run out over time and need to be replaced. Make sure you do this as and when you need to, as you could run into more than a few issues if you don’t. Your car could seize up and cause a breakdown if you don’t, so it’s worth focusing on from the start.

Make sure to check your fluids, such as your oil levels, regularly to see if it needs to be replaced. Don’t wait until they’ve run out to replace them. As soon as they start running low, top it up to make sure your car runs properly.

5. Perform Regular Maintenance

One of the more notable car basics every owner should know is they’ll need to perform regular maintenance for their car to run properly. Replacing the fluids, as mentionede a problem, a few things could start flashing every once in a while. One of the more notable is the check engine light above, is just the top of the iceberg with this. You’ll need to check and rotate the tires, get the engine checked regularly, and much more.

It’s worth getting a professional to do this for you to make sure there aren’t any hidden problems with your vehicle. If you’re a first-time car owner, most of these could go over your head, making a mechanic the better choice to look through it.

6. Check The Check Engine Light

You’ll have quite a few things on the dashboard. While most of these shouldn’t be a problem, a few things could start flashing every once in a while. One of the more notable is the check engine light. If this starts flashing, there’s a large problem with your car, and you’ll need to get it checked out quickly.

It's a sign there’s something serious wrong with your car, and you should stop driving immediately. It’s worth getting it towed and taken to a mechanic to find out what’s actually wrong with the engine. You risk your own safety otherwise.

7. Look After The Shocks & Struts

The shocks and struts are much more important to your car than you might’ve thought. They’re an essential part of making your drive comfortable while protecting a decent part of the vehicle. While they mightn’t need much work with newer cars - if any - they can have problems with other vehicles.

You might need to get them replaced or repaired at some point. If you hear any rattling or if there’s any rocking back and forth as you go over bumps, then your shocks and struts need to be looked after. Thankfully, this is a relatively easy fix, and you shouldn’t have to pay too much to replace them. You’ll be back to having a comfortable drive before you know it.

Car Basics You Need To Know: Wrapping Up

With a few car basics you need to know, you shouldn’t have a problem looking after your new car. Since this can be an essential part of being a responsible car owner, there’s no reason not to focus on this from the start. It’ll save you a lot of time and hassle, and even some money.

Regular car maintenance, knowing the shuts and struts, and getting your car inspected are all notable parts of this. With how important they can be to looking after your car, they’re all worth considering and getting done.

TEE TIMES

detroit dad blogger

My son wanted to go golfing for his special birthday activity to celebrate turning fourteen today. I know some people here in Michigan still hit the links outdoors in December but with the winter weather we decided instead to try out the brand new GOLFZON simulators at the Tee Times location that just opened up this week in Rochester Hills. I took my son and two of his friends to tee it up at this new golf simulator venue for some birthday celebration fun.

They played an hour long round of golf at Pebble Beach which gave the boys the experience of playing on scenic oceanside California links without the expense of actually going to the real site. The indoor facility also had the vibe of playing a round of clubs on a course rather than the feel of just swinging clubs at a driving range. Though when a player isn't up instead of sitting in a golf cart waiting for a turn, you sit in an area designated for your group either on leather couches or bar stools with a table for holding food and beverages that you can purchase from the facility's kitchen and bar. Available are appetizers, sandwiches and salads that all looked good from what I saw other folks eating; but the boys just wanted to share a pizza which wasn't available on the Tee Times menu so I took them over to the Hamlin Pub to eat after they were done playing.

The kids played on a state-of-the-art GOLFZON TwoVision Simulator which can portray 200+ different real-world courses to choose from. This simulator would cost $70,000 to install within your home so paying $50 an hour of "green fees" accommodating up to a foursome seemed a reasonable cost and provide a decent value for the experience. It has cost me $100 to treat my child and two friends to an hour of games at Dave & Buster's so $50 for the three of them to play a virtual round of golf actually seemed like somewhat of a bargain.

This simulator has a lot of high-tech aspects to it, yet it was easy to use and overly complicated to manage your gameplay. It has five distinct hitting surfaces that include fairway, rough and sand trap which sensors and displays that make sure you are hitting the ball from the appropriate spot on the swing-plate players stand on. This swing plate also can move in twenty-four different directions to replicate elevations and ground conditions of where you are hitting from on a course.

The visuals on the screen you hit into were good, but I was a bit underwhelmed by them. They looked like visuals you'd see in a video game rather than a real-life photography or videography. The boys commented it was like playing a Golden Tee arcade game with their gold clubs instead of a roller ball. Don't get me wrong the graphics were nice, but the visuals didn't immerse you into feeling as if you were actually looking out onto a real course.

TwoVision's highlight is its two advanced high-speed sensors that provide an accurate representation on where your ball would go on the course by how you hit it in the simulation bay. Whether it is hitting off a tee, chipping out of a bunker or putting on a green the sensors provide accurate representations of these experiences, so you feel as you are actually replicating the feel of course play. The boys liked that it was like playing a video game but had them going through the motions of the real-life activity. These three spend a lot of time at home playing video games against one another over Internet connections, so I liked that it got them out and about doing an activity together outside of each of their houses.

Most importantly they had fun trying something new. This place literally opened two days before we went but you wouldn't have known it because its staff was running the place very smoothly and professionally. Minimum booking time is an hour for $50; note though that if you are having fun and want to stay longer you probably can't because they book up and there is probably someone waiting for their turn to start as your time expires. Keep that in mind when making your reservation.

My son and his friends had a good time and we had a hassle-free experience so that is the primary reason Tee Times earned A Geek Daddy nod of approval. Whether you are just looking for something out of the ordinary to do or are a serious golfer wanting to play when there is six inches of snow on the ground, if you live in Metro Detroit check out Tee Times. For beginner golfers who may intimidated about going out on a course and having annoyed foursomes of more advanced golfers backing up behind you this is a great way to get some practice in before actually hitting the links. Note you do need to bring your own golf clubs to use on the simulators so don't show up without any in hand expecting to play.
