ANOTHER SEASON OF DOCTOR WHO COMING TO DISNEY+

You know who will be back for some new adventures soon! A second season of brand new Doctor Who episodes is coming to Disney+ and will be available to stream starting Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 12 AM Pacific Time. New episodes from this eight-part season will premiere weekly.  In Season 2 of Doctor Who on Disney+, the Doctor meets Belinda Chandra and begins an epic quest to get her back to Earth. But a mysterious force is stopping their return and the time-traveling TARDIS team must face great dangers, bigger enemies and wider terrors than ever before.

Emmy® Award winner Alan Cumming (“The Traitors”) will guest star in the second episode as Mr Ring-a-Ding, a happy, funny, singalong cartoon, who lives in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally. However, in 1952, after years of repeats in cinemas across the land, Mr Ring-a-Ding suddenly looks beyond the screen and sees the real world outside — and the consequences are terrifying. Cumming is returning to the Whoniverse after previously playing King James I in the 2018 episode “The Witchfinders.”

Showrunner, executive producer and writer Russell T Davies told ageekdaddy.com, “Only Alan Cumming could give a runaway cartoon so much wit, malice, danger and fun. He makes the whole universe of ‘Doctor Who’ wilder and madder than ever, and it’s an absolute honor to welcome him on board the TARDIS."

This new season stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra and Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday. Previously announced guest cast includes Rose Ayling-Ellis, Christopher Chung, Anita Dobson, Michelle Greenidge, Jonah Hauer-King, Ruth Madeley, Jemma Redgrave and Susan Twist.

COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS NOSTALGIA COMIC BOOK SERIES

Scott Hoffman (aka Babydaddy) of the multi-platinum selling band Scissor Sisters makes his comics writing debut with NOSTALGIA, a noir adventure about a futuristic rock star that takes cues from Hoffman's own life as a musician. NOSTALGIA features mesmerizing art by Danijel Žeželj, colors by Lee Loughridge, letters by Steve Wands, is designed by Rian Hughes and edited by Greg Lockard and Will Dennis. NOSTALGIA is a five-issue series that will be released weekly beginning on June 13, 2023 and is available from Amazon’s Comixology Originals exclusive digital content line.

NOSTALGIA takes place in a dark future that mirrors our current anxieties and divides, from politics, to climate change, and what our future world may look like. When a mysterious package with an image of a shell on it arrives at the unlisted address of Mr. Craig Mancini his interest is piqued. Mancini, also known as music performer Nostalgia, begins to reminisce about his past, ditches his tech and goes to meet the mysterious stranger behind the parcel. This encounter blows his mind and takes him down a path unraveling all that he knew to be true.

The series explores what it means for artists to share themselves with the world. It’s also about how we look at our past and redefine our own stories, and how art is a way to transfer our lives and memories to other people. Most importantly, it examines the idea of fame, connection to the world, and where connecting to other people will ultimately take us, especially considering the dangers of being so connected and constantly inundated with the inner workings of other peoples’ lives.

“I culled a lot of ideas from my personal experience and the incredible 12 years I spent in the band Scissor Sisters (2024 brings the 20th anniversary of our first album!)," Scott Hoffman remarked to ageekdaddy.com. “I also studied writing at Columbia University and am a big reader and fan of comics. Part of my intention with NOSTALGIA is to bring back my own nostalgia for an era of comics that I feel close to, particularly the 90s subversive Vertigo days—edgy, somewhat literary, more adult.”

Scott Hoffman (aka Babydaddy) is perhaps best known as the co-founder of the multi-platinum selling rock/disco/glam/pop band Scissor Sisters. Alongside Jason Sellards, aka Jake Shears, Scott co-wrote and produced the music, and from 2001-2012 the band toured worldwide, received (among others) an Ivor Novello and multiple Brit awards, garnered multiple top 10 singles and sold nearly 7 million albums worldwide. “I Don’t Feel Like Dancing,” one of their collaborations with Elton John, went to number one in 9 countries and was a top ten hit in many others. The band’s music was used in countless films and TV shows, and they wrote and recorded original songs for projects including the closing credits for the film “Party Monster” and a sequence in “Shrek: Forever After.”

As a writer/producer, Scott has worked alongside Jason with artists such as Bryan Ferry and Kylie Minogue (their collaboration “I Believe in You” was a worldwide hit, debuting at number 2 in the UK charts). Since the band’s hiatus, Scott has been working for/with other artists including Demi Lovato, Melanie Martinez, Tinashe, Chris Brown, Ariana Grande, additional work with Kylie Minogue, and FRENSHIP (whose “Capsize”, which he co-wrote, has earned over 550 million streams on Spotify alone). In addition, he has written original music for films including "Kill Your Friends" and has scored three major television shows including "The Great Indoors" for CBS and "Hoops" for Netflix.

Danijel Žeželj is a graphic novelist, animator, illustrator and painter. He is the author of twenty five graphic novels and eight short animation movies. His work has been published by DC Comics, Marvel, Dark Horse, Heavy Metal, Image, Glénat, Dargaud, Eris Edizioni, The New York Times, Harper’s Magazine, etc. Since 1997 he has created a series of multimedia performances merging live painting with live music. They premiered in Europe and the USA. In 2001 in Zagreb, Croatia he co-founded a publishing house and graphic workshop Petikat. He lives and works in Brooklyn and Zagreb.

Amazon’s Comixology Originals exclusive digital content line is available at no additional cost for members of Amazon Prime and Comixology Unlimited, and for purchase at amazon.com/comixology. Each and every creator in XINO is bringing their A-game to fulfill that purpose and tell stories that distort and destroy expectations at each turn," President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson commented to ageekdaddy.com. "Each issue is packed with potent and powerful content – and is definitely not for the faint of heart."

It was the story of "a guy hopelessly mired in the role of being a sci-fi hero." The chance of his script being picked up by a Hollywood studio was 1 in 10,000 but five years later his story now named "Galaxy Quest" was showing on movie theater screens around the world and featured a stellar cast that included Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver and Tony Shalhoub.

SCI FI REIMAGINING OF JULES VERNE NOVEL

Author Jules Verne (1828 - 1905) set the foundation for the action adventures and science fiction stories enjoyed today by writing novels such as Around the World in 80 Days, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. He explored technological themes when many of these topics were fantasies rather than the reality we know today. To his credit many of Jules Verne's stories are still amazing to read even though they are more than a hundred years old and I've encouraged my kids to pickup some of his titles when selecting library books to bring home. Captain Nemo isn't just the name of my favorite sub shop, he is an incredible literary figure created by Jules Verne.

Stopping by my local comic book store to look for something new and interesting to read, I discovered LIGHTHOUSE by Image Comics. This comic book is a reimagining of a lesser known Jules Verne novel "The Lighthouse at the End of the World." It takes an adventurous tale set in a time on Earth filled with wooden sailing ships and pirates and retells it with a science fiction twist featuring rocket ships in outer space.

Jules Verne's "Lighthouse" is set in the 1850s in a time before the Panama Canal when rickety sailing ships from Europe and the East Coast of the United States must make a hazardous voyage around South America's Cape Horn to get to the West Coast of America and Asia. To try and make the voyage safer a lighthouse is built along the ocean coast of Argentina to assist passing ships in navigating treacherous waters. A small skeleton crew maintains this lighthouse built at the "End of the World" and is relieved by new staff to maintain the facility via a supply ship which visits every three months.

The story begins with head lighthouse keeper Vasquez along with helpers Moriz and Felipe beginning their shift in this out of the way local. Shortly after the supply ship departs though there is a new arrival at the lighthouse ... Pirates! They plan to utilize the lighthouse to wreck ships instead of guide them. The pirates will then scavenge the wrecks for booty.

The pirates quickly dispatch Moriz and Felipe but Vasquez escapes into the wilderness surrounding the lighthouse. Vasquez then struggles to stay alive while also circumventing the pirates efforts to utilize the lighthouse to misguide passing ships into crashing their vessels. Can Vasquez hold out until the supply ship arrives with help?

Image Comics "Lighthouse" takes the plot of the 1850s era Jules Verne novel and sets it in a distant future sci fi setting. This lighthouse is a giant super computer on a space station in a far off corner of the galaxy that assists space ships in navigating transit through wormholes which allow mankind to travel millions of light years in short periods of time. Without this space station to guide ships traveling via wormholes is very tricky and dangerous. The lighthouse though has made traveling throughout outer space almost routine.

At the edge of the galaxy, there is a giant supercomputer known as the Lighthouse. The only brain powerful enough to navigate ships through a sargasso of naturally occurring wormholes, potentially cutting months or even years off a spaceship’s journey. Three humans, one alien, and a nanny bot have manned the remote station for years in relative peace until the arrival of Captain Kongre and his band of cutthroat pirates threatens the future of civilization and reveals that each of the Lighthouse crew has been hiding a shocking secret.

Like in Jules Verne's original story, the small crew maintaining this remote space station finds itself highjacked by pirates. Why try and take over ships when they can just crash them into asteroids and scavenge the wrecks with help from the Lighthouse. This comic book adaption of the Jules Verne "Lighthouse at the End of the World" adds a sci fi twist to the plot and takes the story off in a few different directions from the original novel adding some originality to the inspiration material.

Image Comics' first issue in a 5-part mini series is on comic shop shelves now. Featuring captivating artwork by Brian Haberlin and a fun science fiction spin on a classic adventure tale with this adaption written by David Hine, I'm enjoying reading the first installment of Image Comics Lighthouse which starts off the mini-series with a double-sized issue. I'm geeked to keep reading the rest of the Lighthouse story from Image Comics!

STAR TRECK TRIDIMENSIONAL CHESS SET

Play chess like Captain Kirk, Spock and the crew of the starship Enterprise did with this screen accurate as seen on the original Star Trek television series game set available now from The Noble Collection. Enjoy a sci-fi angle to this classic game of strategy as players utilize a three dimensional chess board. While the rules are fairly similar to standard chess play there are some 23rd Century adaptions for science fiction fans to geek out over with the tridimensional layout of the game as well as the addition of mobile board sections that are in motion throughout a match. There are new rules to expand the fun of your matches to where no chess game you've played has gone before!

My son and I have been having some good times battling one another in Star Trek Tridimensional Chess. It takes a few games to get down moving up and down in addition to across the chess board. Plus your opponent being able to move board segments offensively and defensively adds an extra dimension of strategy that takes some getting use to. But once you have a few matches under your belt the game becomes comfortable to play and really isn't that intricate to get a grasp on.

The Noble Collection's Star Trek Tridimensional Chess Set looks just like the one played by Captain Kirk and Spock on the tv show but it isn't just a prop replica. It is a fully playable game adapting chess rules that has provided my family with numerous exciting bouts in our basement game room. Whether you are a chess player or Star Trek fan this game is a great addition to incorporate into your family game nights. Plus it makes an incredible addition for anyone who has Star Trek themed decor in a home or office.

The Star Trek Chess Set is approximately 13 inches tall and features translucent acrylic elevated game boards. 32 diecast game pieces representing traditional chess pawns, bishops, rooks, knights, kings and queens are included with the set. It takes about five minutes to set up the chess set out of the box and begin playing though as I said it may take a few matches before you completely get the new game rules mastered. Once you get the game down this is an energetic, exciting version of chess to play.

SNOW PIERCER

Warner Bros Home Entertainment provided this dad blogger a free Blu-ray. Opinions expressed are my own.

Hasn't been much of a winter when it comes to snow fall this year but a bunch of it has just been dumped on us by some recent storms. Winter weather conditions made today a snow day with our local roads impassible this morning but by the afternoon our local DPW had done an excellent job of digging us out. So my daughter and I bundled up and hit the sledding hill for the first time in awhile. We had a lot of fun getting outside and racing down the slopes!

After we got home it seemed a fitting day to watch this sci-fi tv series I've been wanting to see but couldn't because we cut our cable and it is broadcast on TNT. Now that the first season is available on Blu-ray, I'm finally going to be able to catch up with what is going on in SNOWPIERCER! I'm going to binge watch it tonight after the kids go to bed.

Set almost a decade after the world has become a frozen wasteland, SNOWPIERCER revolves around the remnants of humanity who inhabit a perpetually moving train, with 1,001 cars, that circles the globe. Class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival play out in this television adaption of a graphic novel series. Yeah it may seem like a goofy premise but it based upon a comic book full of sci-fi goodness! Plus the show stars Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind) and Grammy & Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs (Hamilton).

You can pick up SNOWPIERCER: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON on Blu-ray or DVD at Best Buy to add to your home entertainment video library. Purchase it via a Geek Daddy affiliate link and this dad blogger will receive a small commission at no additional expense to you. Your support of ageekdaddy.com is appreciated!

SNAP SHIPS REVIEW

My son is in those tween aged years where kids are beginning to outgrow playing with toys, but that hasn't kept him from being absolutely delighted by SNAP SHIPS from PlayMonster. He has spent a lot of hours building these sci-fi themed spacecraft and engaging in imaginative adventures with them. His enjoyment of SNAP SHIPS has put them at the top of my family's list for favorite new toy this year. And we are aren't alone in appreciating SNAP SHIPS as they've been named a finalist in the "Construction Toy of the Year" category for the Toy Association's TOTY awards.

The heroic Forge battle the villainous Komplex for interstellar superiority within the SNAP SHIPS universe. Construct a variety of impressive vessels to combat one another ranging from patrol craft, troop transports and battleships. These sharp looking models are a snap to put together and my son really likes them because they look great to display in his room.

In fact, I think he has more fun constructing these model spaceships than actually playing with them. Though I have caught him having some space battles in his room with his SNAP SHIPS so they do have a lot of playability for even tween aged kids. He has liked them enough to ask for some more SNAP SHIPS as Christmas gifts this year.

Here is a build through video with my son demonstrating how to put together a SNAP SHIP. PlayMonster has done a nice job making it so that the parts to these toys are easy to snap together yet durable enough that they won't fall apart when being played with. The constructed products look so good you'd think a lot more effort than actually is necessary was put into assembling the toys.

And while they look nice for displaying these toys can be played with too without worrying about them easily breaking. In fact while we were taping this video, one of the assembled SNAP SHIPS got knocked off the table and when we picked it up after wrapping up filming this build through not a piece had separated or broken apart from it. As you'll see in the video though, if you make a mistake putting a toy together or want to make rearrangements it is no big deal to pop out parts and move things around.

Easy to assemble yet durable for play are sure to make SNAP SHIPS a hit! Also taking advantage of the blind bag collecting trend in toys, each SNAP SHIP has a mystery accessory included with it that you won't know what it is until the package has been opened. Maybe it will be a turbo boaster, laser cannon, or missile system to give the toy an extra edge. You can buy multiple of the same SNAP SHIP style and get all sorts of different mystery accessories which adds some extra excitement to constructing them.

Also PlayMonster has added some out of the box elements to help bring SNAP SHIPS to life. There is a YouTube animated series that adds some personality to the mini-figures that come with each SNAP SHIP and provides inspiration for imaging space battles with the toys. Additionally there is a free app for Android and Apple devices that provides augmented reality features that can enhance the experience of playing with the physical toys.

I'm a sci-fi geek so this dad blogger couldn't resist getting some of these spaceship toys for my son. That worked out well because he really loves them. As a parent, I appreciate not only that he is enjoying the toys but also they provide repeat playability, durability and originality ensuring that we are getting value for the money spent on them. That is complimented by a very reasonable price range of $12 to $50 dollars that gives you a lot more bang for your buck than some other construction toy brands. So SNAP SHIPS have earned a Geek Daddy nod of approval based upon the affordability, innovation and entertainment these toys provide.
