ARCADE FUN AT HOME

There was a video game arcade midway on the walk between my home and middle school. Every day after school you knew where all the kids in the neighborhood were. We'd all rush to be the first to get a spot in front of an arcade cabinet because in the late 80s you didn't play video games on your phone or television set. You played video games at an arcade! 

My twelve year old self dreamed of one day building a video arcade in my home. Fast forward to today and filling up space in your house with full-sized video game arcade cabinets may not seem as glamorous in the 21st Century as it did back then. Wow saying "21st Century" still seems so "futuristic" to me.  

That doesn't mean childish fantasies still can't come true. There are a variety of retro-style miniature arcade models available now that can let you imagine having your dream game room. My kids really did have a mini arcade in their playroom as they were growing up with Pac-Man, Tetris, Frogger, Q*Bert and Fix it Felix Basic Fun! video games. While they still play them from time to time now they are twelve themselves they tend to spend more time on Animal Crossing and Fortnite. Things are so much different now from when I was twelve years old!

DRAGONS LAIR PLAY SCALE ARCADE MACHINE

Here is some 80's nostalgia for you! New Wave Toys has released a limited edition sixth scale reproduction of the 1983 arcade game DRAGONS LAIR. While this version of the video game is a lot smaller than what you would have found in an arcade it looks and plays just like the original Dragons Lair.

Dragons Lair came out when I was a ten year old kid with a love of Dungeon and Dragons and video games. So I was fascinated by this cutting edge arcade game that used laser disc technology to bring high definition animations by famed Hollywood cartoonist Don Bluth (The Secret of NIHM / The Fox & The Hound) to a dungeon crawling adventure you could play. I was always excited to pop some quarters into this arcade game so I could immerse myself into the fantasy of being the knightly Dirk the Daring attempting to rescue the beautiful damsel in distress Princess Daphne from the evil dragon Singe who was guarding her in the spooky castle of the foul wizard Mordroc.

While this officially licensed replica of the original arcade cabinet may only be 12" tall it features authentic controls and the actual game engine to play just like the original Dragons Lair. Despite its diminished size once I started playing this New Wave Toys Replicade version of Dragons Lair it was like time traveling back to a 1980s era arcade. The imagery pops off the 4.2-inch screen and really looks just like the animations from the original Dragons Lair arcade game. 

While I became immersed in the game play using the sixth scale arcade cabinet, there is also a port on the back that allows for HDTV connectivity. So you can play Dragons Lair on your television set if you like. Plus there are USB ports on the back so two players can plug in external joysticks to use instead of using the cabinet's built in controls. The back panel also includes two speakers and a volume control dial providing excellent sound quality during game play.

There is also a hidden drawer in the back panel that stores a replica Mini LaserDisc player. I'm sure there is an audience that appreciate this but I personally would have preferred an external joystick included instead like New Wave Toys included with their Replicade version of Street Fighter. I'm using this space instead to store the recharging cord for the built-in lithium ion battery that powers this play scale arcade game.

The cabinet is sturdily built with wood, metal and plastic. It features high resolution cabinet art utilizing 3M vinyl overlays. Four miniature quarters are included that can placed inside a coin storage compartment that is sealed with a die-cast metal door.

Independent digital displays embedded above the game screen keep track of player's scores, lives and credits. An illuminated marquee and LED cabinet accents are some additional special effects that make this replica Dragons Lair arcade cabinet shine. The 50 cent coin displays even light up like you are used to seeing on an arcade machine.

Click on one of lit up coin slot buttons instead of sliding in quarters to activate game credits for one and two player modes. Click on the other coin slot to activate a game options menu. You can control things such as the number of lives Dirk the Daring has during a game ranging from 5 to UNLIMITED and difficulty levels from easy to hard. This menu also lets you control screen brightness and audio settings among other things.

With collectability in mind, New Wave Toys Replicade Dragons Lair comes packaged in three boxes. The first is an actual shipping container, the second is a mock shipping container meant to mimic the crate an actual arcade cabinet would be delivered in, and the final is a Replicade branded display box. The main display box is covered with sharp graphics and full of useful information on the details and capabilities of this toy. My Dragons Lair is currently displayed on a shelf in my home office but I've kept these boxes in case there is ever a reshuffling of decor of the this workspace.

HOT TOYS SIXTH SCALE COLLECTIBLE FIGURES

Hot Toys has earned a reputation for making action figures that are amazing sixth scale reproductions of what sci-fi and superhero characters look like on the silver screen in movies they are featured in.  These are some of the most impressive action figures you can get your hands on and the ones they've created for THOR: RAGNAROK are amazing to look at.  These figures have incredibly detailed body sculpts, are dressed in costumes that use first-rate materials, and equipped with top notch accessories.

THOR

Marvel Gladiator Thor Marvel Sixth Scale Figure has a head with a movie-accurate detailed likeness of Chris Hemsworth, the actor who portrayed the character in THOR: RAGNAROK. It has a muscular body that has over 30 points of articulation and seamless elbow joints as well as four pairs of interchangeable hands (relaxed, fisted, open handed, fitted for holding weapons) to provide a lot of flexibility in recreating poses from scenes in the movie.  Dressed in his gladiatorial armor, the sixth scale figure also comes with a red-colored cape, helmet, shield, and a variety of weapons including swords, daggers, and a mace.

One of the highlights of the movie is seeing the Incredible Hulk stomp into a battle arena to take on Thor in a gladiatorial match.  Hot Toys has done a smashing job of recreating the likeness of the character as he appeared in the movie as a sixth scale action figure. Marvel Hela Marvel Sixth Scale Figure has a head sculpt with a striking resemblance to Cate Blanchett, the actress who had the role in THOR: RAGNORAK.  The action figure wears a headdress with black-colored horns, a specially tailored movie accurate Hela outfit with magnetically attachable green colored cape, two swords, and a damaged Mjolnir to grasp in her hand just like how she humbled Thor with his hammer in the movie.  The toy also has 28 points of articulation as well as seven interchangeable hands (gesturing, relaxed, sword holding & one for holding Mjolnir).

New Chewbacca Action Figure is Hyper Jump Beyond the GI Joes & Barbie Toys of my Youth

Being a Star Wars fanatic, I'm always coming across interesting things related to the Sci-Fi franchise through the blogs and social media accounts that I follow.  The newest item to catch my attention and make me go WOW! is the 1/6th scale Chewbacca action figure being produced by Hong Kong-based HOT TOYS and distributed in the United States by California-based Sideshow Collectibles.  When first observing pictures of this Chewbacca action figure I thought it was a piece of artwork or Star Wars promotional material, but no it is a very detailed toy!  This action figure isn't anything like the GI Joes I had or the Barbie dolls my sister played with when we were kids, this toy looks like it could be the actual Chewbacca if a fictional character could be real.

Hot Toys recently acquired a license to produce Star Wars 1/6 scale collectible action figures and they've gone all out to make one of the best toy reproductions ever of one of the Star Wars universe's most beloved characters.  Chewbacca is over a foot tall ( 14 inches / 36 cm) covered in fabric that provides the illusion the Wookiee is covered in fur and features 30 points of articulation so that the figure can be posed to replicate poses from almost any scene in Star Wars.  I've never seen a toy that has done a nice job attempting to replicate Chewbacca's fur until now and from these preview images it appears that Hot Toys has done exceptional work.  The action figure also comes with some excellent replica accessories to compliment it including Chewie's cross bow, satchel and the head set he wears while co-piloting the Millennium Falcon.

Chewbacca's not flying solo though as his infamous smuggler partner Han is also getting his own figure as Hot Toys kicks off its new Star Wars line.  Han Solo is a little shorter than his Wookiee compadre, keeping these toys movie accurate, at a foot tall (12 inches / 30 cm) and is dressed in his outfit from the original Star Wars movie A New Hope complete with the laser pistol that he shot first with at that friendly chap named Greedo in that well known neighborhood cafe on Tatooine.

There is nothing "cheap" about these toys, including the price tag. Both figures will be available in April 2015 but can be pre-ordered now on the Sideshow Collectibles website with Chewie being priced at $254.99 and Han at $229.99...or both can be purchased together as a package deal for $479.99.  At this price and level of detail these action figures really are toys for adults that would be especially great for decorating a home office, game room, or man cave with. While these aren't cheap to purchase they are definitely unique pieces that would be excellent for any Star Wars fan to show off and enjoy.
