HOT WHEELS LEGENDS TOUR 2024

hot wheels legends tour 2024

Toy manufacturer Mattel made a stop on its HOT WHEELS LEGENDS TOUR in the Motor City this weekend. Sponsored by Mobil 1 and Walmart, the event showcases real cars made to recreate the look of Hot Wheels and existing vehicles that served as the inspiration for being crafted into miniaturized diecast toy cars by Mattel. The HOT WHEELS LEGENDS TOUR'S Motor City stop also had on display hotrods and other customized cars that local people could have judged to have their vehicles entered into a competition where the winner will be replicated into a 1:64 Hot Wheels diecast car that will be made available to add to toy collections.

The Hot Wheels Bone Shaker hotrod was one of the most popular cars at the event. Every parent there was getting pictures of their children with this car. It really stood out!

Gearheads have to love the 1968 Corvette, the Midas Monkey, that Mattel commissioned Gas Monkey Garage to build. This car marked the first time that Hot Wheels had reached out to a tuner about building a car from scratch to be the inspiration for creating a diecast toy and used in promoting the brand. This is a sweet ride that any Gas Monkey fan will be geeked to get a close up look at.

My son's favorite car on display was an original Dodge Viper in mint condition. This is one of the few auto show concept cars that actually became a reality. Manufactured in Detroit the Dodge Viper is a great example of Motor City Muscle. It looks sleek and has the speed to match its appearance...a very nice ride!

My favorite car there was probably the least glamorous. A recreation of Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane's police car from the Dukes of Hazard television show. While most attendees weren't paying attention as they walked past it, I discovered the trunk was filled with autographs and memorabilia from the cast and crew of the Dukes of Hazard. I loved that show as a kid ... it was must see TV each week when a new episode aired!

2024 AUTORAMA HIGHLIGHTS

2024 autorama

Over the weekend, the annual AUTORAMA show was taking place at the Huntington Place convention center in downtown Detroit. More than 800 classic cars and customized hotrods were showcased during the event. When you live in the Motor City it is part of the region's car culture that fathers and sons bond over checking out cool rides. My boy and I did exactly that spending some quality time together enjoying all that AUTORAMA had to offer.

Here is a highlight reel of our walk around the AUTORAMA show floor:

My son's favorite car at AUTORAMA was this souped-up Ford Mustang. He'd love to take that out for a spin on a track! That car has some nice Motor City muscle!

This gritty street racer with an Old English D on the grill caught my attention. Piecing together a vehicle to race against your buddies on a rural dirt road or urban back alley for drag racing bragging rights is like an elixir of youth for a middle-aged dad like me. So, this was one of my favorite cars on display at this year's AUTORAMA.

BATMOBILES ON DISPLAY IN THE MOTOR CITY

2024 autorama batmobile display

In addition to showcasing more than 800 classic cars and customized hotrods, the 2024 AUTORAMA that took place this weekend (March 1 - 3) included five generations of batmobiles and two batcycles on display. Holy Hotrods Batman! Featured were the original batmobile from the 1966-live action television series along with motorcycles ridden by Batman and Batgirl in the show as well as the cars the Dark Knight drove in the movies Batman Begins, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Justice League.

1960 ERA BATMOBILE

batman

From January 12, 1966 though March 14, 1968, the adventures of Gotham City's caped crusader and his boy wonder sidekick were broadcast across the country on the ABC network. Batman, played by Adam West, and Robin, played by Burt Ward, engaged in a variety of comic book style battles with epic villains during the television series 120 episodes that spanned over three years. And while the show was filled with great actors and actresses playing its heroes and villains, it was a car that may had the most memorable role. Everyone knows and loves the Batmobile from this Batman tv series!

The vehicle was custom made for the show. Prior to this tv show, Batman drove a simple non-descript red sedan in the comic books and an average looking Cadillac in the 1940s film serials.  Television producers though wanted to have the hero have his own unique tricked out hotrod that would wow audiences. So, they purchased a Lincoln Futura concept car that Ford wasn't planning on bringing into production and transformed it into a crime fighting weapon. The concept of Batman having a cool looking, techy, super car was born!

Autorama provided for a close up view of a replica of the original Batmobile and Batcycles from the 1960s era tv series starring Adam West and Burt Ward. The vehicles have been autographed by a number of the cast from the show. With its double-bubble roof, fins and rocket engine this sure is a sweet ride!

TIM BURTON-ERA BATMOBILE (1989 - 1992)

tim burton batmobile

The batmobiles driven by Michael Keeton in the Tim Burton directed Batman movies was meant to have a gothic vibe and darker tone for the film compared to the campier Adam West ride. This batmobile was inspired by the vehicles of 1930s era salt-flat racers and the sliding canopies of fighter jets. The movie car was powered by a Chevrolet V-8 to give it some Motor City muscle!

BATMAN FOREVER (1995)

val kilmer batmobile

The Batmobile driven by Val Kilmer in the Joel Schumacher directed film had more of a sci-fi inspiration to it compared to the one utilized by Burton. Designers took inspiration from under the sea in jelly fish and outer space with creatures from the film Alien to design this adaption of the Batmobile. There was an emphasis from the movie studio to lighten up the imagery of Batman to make the toys based on the film more appealing to kids.

batmobile

While this Batmobile didn't take design cues from prior makes and models of cars, it was built on a Corvette platform and utilizes a 345-horsepower Chevy 350 ZZ3 V-8 engine. While the body of this Batmobile may look like a toy, it is the real deal if you were to take it out on a race track. The vehicle on display at Autorama also sports Val Kilmer's autograph on its frame.

BATMAN BEGINS (2005)

Director Chris Nolan wanted to have his Batman, Christian Bale, driving a vehicle that had more a real life military vehicle image to it. He envisioned a mashup of a Lamborghini with a Humvee.  In essence, Nolan wanted a super-fast tank. The batmobile that resulted became known as the Tumbler.

gothem city batmobiles
batman tumbler

The Tumbler is equipped with 44-inch monster truck tires and a Chevy LS1, 5.7-liter V-8 engine. This movie car was so fast that a Mercedes camera-car could hardly keep up with it while filming scenes for the movie. The Batmobile Tumbler is a beast!

JUSTICE LEAGUE (2017)

movie cars

Ben Affleck's Batmobile in the Zack Snyder DC Comics inspired movies is a leaner version of the Tumbler. It looks more like a fast, futuristic armored car versus the Tumbler's tank-like appearance. While the Justice League version of the Batmobile doesn't have working machine guns and missile launchers, it does have a real life Ford F350 Raptor 700 horsepower truck engine in it. Vroom! Vroom!

Five generations of Gotham City batmobiles on display in the Motor City. Which batmobile is your favorite? I'm torn between the Tumbler and one that wasn't on display at Autorama, the muscle car driven by Robert Pattinson in 2022's The Batman which had more of the appearance of a hotrod versus a techy super car. Yet, I would be GEEKED to take any of these batmobiles for a spin and it was awesome to get a close up look at these five cars at the Autorama display.

IMPROVING YOUR CHILD'S RC CAR DRIVING EXPERIENCE: A GUIDE FOR PARENTS

remote control cars

Remote-controlled (RC) cars are a popular choice among kids for playtime fun. However, the joy of controlling these miniature vehicles can sometimes be overshadowed by frustration when maneuvering becomes difficult.

Besides, let’s be honest here. How many parents have had to secretly replace or throw off an RC toy that got damaged in a matter of days? Kids are all sorts of fun, but they can go through toys fairly quickly. RC cars are always at high risk because not every child gets the hang of it!

Why you need to improve the driving experience
Children, especially those with limited driving experience, can find it challenging to control RC toys effectively.

Maneuvering the car around obstacles or through tight spaces requires a certain level of skill and coordination. Without prior experience, kids may struggle to navigate smoothly, leading to frustration and dissatisfaction with the toy. For instance, kids who don’t know how to ride a bicycle are more likely to crash their RC car!

Additionally, repeated instances of the car getting stuck can diminish the enjoyment of the play experience. By enhancing the driving experience, you can help your child overcome these challenges and fully enjoy their RC car adventures.

Choosing an age-appropriate toy
There’s no secret here. Selecting the right RC car for your child's age and skill level is crucial in ensuring an enjoyable play experience. Opt for models that are specifically designed for beginners or young children, and that are easy to navigate. These typically feature simplified controls and are easier to operate. Look for cars with rugged designs and bulky sizes, as these factors contribute to greater stability and control. Avoid purchasing advanced models with complex features that may overwhelm or frustrate your child.

Installing bearings
One effective way to improve the performance of an RC car is by installing bearings. Bearings are small metal components that reduce friction between moving parts, such as wheels and axles. By replacing the stock bushings with bearings, you can enhance the car's efficiency and maneuverability. The good news is: You can find plenty of YouTube tutorials on how to replace those for RC toys, and you can find cost-effective quality bearings from specialist suppliers, such as this Chinese bearing manufacturer

You won’t believe the difference bearings can make. They enable the car to move more freely, so it becomes easier for kids to control. Another advantage of bearings, they help prolong the life of the car by reducing wear and tear on critical components.

Installing suspensions
Another modification that can significantly enhance the driving experience is installing custom suspensions. We all know what suspensions do. They absorb shocks and vibrations. They do exactly the same for toy cars and help create a smoother ride on various terrains.

For RC cars, especially those controlled by beginners, custom suspensions can make a world of difference in handling and stability. They allow you to adjust the car's ride height and stiffness to suit your child's preferences and driving style, and to accommodate the terrain. So, if you’ve got a bumpy yard, this is a golden opportunity!

In conclusion, there’s so much you could do to create a fun RC experience for a younger or less experienced kid. When you think it only takes a few modifications for your kids to drive the RC car with confidence and ease, there’s no reason not to do it!

PERFORM THESE 5 CHECKS BEFORE DRIVING YOUR CAR IN WINTER

winter car maintenance tips

You should be taking steps to maintain your car at all times, but let’s be honest, most of the time your car won’t face problems if you forget a few of the small maintenance tasks. You can go a month or two without checking the tire pressure and it won’t be a huge deal.

Unless you’re driving in the winter… Winter car maintenance is far more important thanks to the temperature dropping. It can be well below freezing overnight and this has an impact on your car. If you jump in and drive off without performing some key checks, your car may face a mixture of problems. This can hinder your safety and damage critical components of your vehicle.

So, before you set off for winter journeys, make sure you perform these five checks:

Fuel

Always check that you’ve got enough fuel in your car throughout the winter. If you don’t, you can face a couple of problems:
  •  Running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere when it’s very cold
  • Your car not starting because there’s not enough fuel in it
The latter can happen when your fuel is in the red zone. There’s technically enough fuel in there to get you to a gas station, but the cold weather makes it harder for your engine to ignite such low levels of fuel. As such, you turn the ignition but the engine doesn’t kick into action. When you’re heading home from a journey, double-check that there’s enough fuel for the next one. If not, fill up on gas and then head home.

When you’re not sure if there’s enough fuel to take you to a gas station, you should try to get there by other means. Perhaps a friend will let you ride with them and you can fill a jerry can up with fuel to take back home. Or, if you break down due to a lack of fuel, call a towing service to take you to the nearest gas station.

Oil

Next, you need to check your car’s oil levels. This is a crucial part of winter maintenance as oil will lubricate the moving parts of your car engine. When the temperature drops, these parts can get a lot stiffer and will need even more oil.

So, if there’s not a good supply of oil in your car, these parts will struggle to function properly and can cause catastrophic issues. If you’re not careful, it could permanently damage the engine and mean you need a replacement.

Some cars have oil level indicators but the manual way of checking is easy. Open your hood and locate the oil compartment - it’ll be on the engine. Pull out the dipstick and see if it is between the min and max levels. When the readings are below the minimum level, your car needs an oil top-up! Keep in mind that oil contracts when it’s cold, so you should check these readings when your car is still warm. Otherwise, it may seem like you’ve not got enough oil, causing you to overfill.

Tires

You put a lot of faith in your tires when driving in the winter. Rain, snow, and ice lead to terrible driving conditions as the roads have less grip. For this reason, experts suggest having double the minimum tire tread level for additional traction.

It’s really smart to get a tread depth gauge to perform this check. Some people use the quarter or penny method, but a proper tread depth gauge will give the most accurate readings. It helps you see how much your tires have worn down and if it’s time to replace them.

Consider getting special winter tires for your car if you live in a freezing area with lots of snow and ice. Winter tires are designed to be a lot thicker and grippier, so they can handle these conditions better than normal tires.

Coolant

All car engines will need coolant to…well…cool the engine down. It’s what stops your engine from overheating, though you may assume it’s not as important during the winter. After all, cold weather means your engine will be colder, right? Surely low coolant levels aren’t an issue as there’s less chance of the engine overheating in these conditions…right?!

Surprisingly, car engines can still overheat in the winter. If anything, there’s just as big of a chance as there is in hot weather. Because the engine starts cold, it tries to work harder to compensate. Without the right coolant levels, this can lead to overheating.

There’s another key benefit to coolant; it contains something called anti-freeze. This solution stops the liquid from freezing inside your engine, so it doesn’t seize up in the winter. Check your coolant levels before every journey or you might end up with a frozen engine.

Lights

Lights are important throughout the year in all seasons, but winter is the darkest period of all. Consequently, your lights need to be on more often. You also need to ensure your fog lights work, just in case it gets hazy in the mornings.

Turn your car on and go through all the light settings to be sure they work. This includes your blinkers - people need to see when you’re turning! It’s a good idea to wipe the lights as well before you get in the car, just to get rid of any dirt or ice that’s formed on them overnight. Even a thin layer of ice can obscure the lights for any cars behind or ahead of you.

Speaking of ice, that’s sort of a hidden sixth check to do. Well, it’s not much of a check as you can clearly see if your car has ice covering it. Don’t drive off until it’s melted away. To do this, switch on the engine and turn the front screen de-misters on. This will heat the windscreen and you can sweep off any ice as it melts. If you’re in a rush, use an ice scraper to get as much off as possible. Never pour hot water on your windscreen as this can cause serious damage to the glass.

Now, you’re all ready to head out on a winter journey without fearing what will happen to your vehicle!

RUKO RC TRUCK

ruko remote control truck toy review

Thanks to RUKO for sending me one of their new remote control toy trucks to take outside and try out. This girl dad is going to be having some off roading fun with his daughter playing with this pink and purple styled amphibious Ruko RC truck. YES, I said AMPHIBIOUS! This remote control toy truck has an IPX6 waterproof rating making it great for having fun with it at the beach, running it through mud puddles or playing in the rain.

The truck's chassis height is optimized for having 4X4 off road fun. Climb over obstacles, race through different terrains, or jump it over ramps and hill. This 1:10 scale [15.3 inches long, 10.3 inches wide and 8.2 inches high] is meant to get dirty and wet through rugged play. It is built durable enough to take a beating and keep on running to provide plenty of off-roading 4x4 excitement.

The Ruko amphibious RC truck also has some nice features that enhance its useability and ease of use. This remote control toy truck includes rechargeable batteries to power it which provides approximately 50 minutes per charge of play time. Just plug it into a usb port to recharge. Oh yeah, they provide you with two batteries so you can run the toy while your other battery is recharging!

The RC truck has an anti-collision design includes sturdy front and rear bumpers to avoid damage when it crashes into things. The rear bumper also serves as a carrying handle. Plus, the truck has working headlights and brake lights that look really sharp.

Ruko 1601AMP3 Amphibious RC Truck for Girls

The only detraction with this toy is it has a very basic remote control. While the remote control works great for having this truck climb over obstacles, hurdling it through mud or having the toy spin around, steering it for turns or navigating a track can be challenging. Also, the remote control uses 2 AAA batteries which are not included. I had to make a special trip to the store just to get batteries for the remote control before we could use it.

ruko waterproof rc toy truck

So yes there are some detractions for the vehicle, but all in all it is a well built, durable toy that has the potential to provide hours of playtime entertainment. I appreciate that Ruko intentionally styled the toy to make it attractive for girls. Having fun off-roading and playing with remote control cars and trucks shouldn't be a "boy" thing. Hopefully this color scheme that is meant to be appealing to ladies will result in some quality daddy-daughter / mommy-daughter experiences that will inspire girls to be excited about STEM and motor sports and entice them into being gearheads.

I also appreciate the waterproof aspect of this toy that greatly expands upon the playability and durability of the toy. Create a ramp to jump it into a pool...take it along on a beach vacation...go outside on a rainy day to play in the mud. The IPX6 rating is a very nice aspect of this toy.

waterproof toy truck

This is a very nice entry level remote control toy at a reasonable price which can be exceptionally fun for either young children or adults to have fun playing with. Therefore, the Ruko 1601AMP3 Amphibious RC Truck for Girls earns a Geek Daddy nod of approval. It is available to purchase on Amazon.com.

IS YOUR VEHICLE REALLY SAFE TO DRIVE?

geek daddy

As soon as you get behind the wheel of your vehicle, you’re putting yourself at some level of risk. That risk can vary based upon how you conduct yourself behind the wheel and other drivers you encounter on the road. While you can't control the driving of others, when it comes to safety you can control your own skills and the maintenance of the vehicles you drive. Whether or not your driving experiences are safe can depend heavily on the condition of your vehicle, and there’s a lot that you need to be aware of.

Cars are complex, and while they may seem durable, they can break down very easily if not cared for. Experiencing a fault while you’re driving can put you and other drivers at serious risk, so you should be doing everything you can to ensure your vehicle is safe on the road.

LISTEN FOR THE BRAKES

The brakes on your car are a key component standing between you and a collision, so you’re going to need them to be fully functional every second you’re driving. If you ever need to make an emergency stop and your brakes aren’t working as they should be, you’re going to crash. Over time your brakes will wear down and will eventually need to be replaced. Pay attention to how your brakes feel and whether or not they’re squeaking as you slow down. If there’s a noise coming from your brakes, it might be time for a change.

VEHICLE PULLING TO THE SIDE

Driving in a straight line shouldn’t be a challenge, but if it feels like your vehicle is resisting that, it might be a sign that you’re due a wheel alignment. If the wheels on your car aren’t properly aligned, it will do more than just pull to the left or right, you’ll notice that the wear on your tires is inconsistent and that it’s more difficult to stop. If you’re noticing any of these problems, you should have your car checked as soon as possible.

TIRE REPLACEMENT

When was the last time you had your tires replaced? Tires are durable, but they’re not going to last forever. If you’re rough on your tires, then you’ll need to replace them even quicker than others. As the tires wear down and the treads become more shallow, it becomes more difficult for them to grip the road. Your tires are keeping you from losing control of the vehicle and making it easier for you to come to a stop when you need to. Neglecting to replace your tires can lead to a collision on the road.

DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS

You should never be too careless about the warnings that are shown on your dashboard. If there are lights indicating that there is a problem, you should ensure it’s dealt with as soon as possible. Take your car in to be serviced, and they can run diagnostics to get to the bottom of the problem. It’s better to have it sorted quickly, as it can prevent any further damage from happening to your vehicle. The lights are there for a reason, it’s better not to ignore them.

IRISH DANCING

Irish Dance

After seven years of ballet, my daughter wanted to try something new that she said would be more fun to do. So for the last three months she has been learning Irish Dance via Zoom. No easy task with the pandemic preventing her class from practicing together in a dance studio but she has made the best of the situation.

Her beginner class had a performance today at a local park as part of the dance troupe's Spring recital. Have to give my daughter a lot of credit because she is starting off in an all-ages class full of little kids. I bet a lot of people her age would have been embarrassed to perform in this situation but she stuck with the class and led them all through their recital routine. The girl wanted to get involved in Irish Dance and if this is what it took she was all onboard to participate. I love the lack of ego she demonstrated!

Proud of her for giving it her all during their first non-Zoom performance together as a group and for being a great team player at the Motor City Irish Dance Spring Recital. Hopefully by the end of the year she will be graduating to a level in the troupe where she is engaged with kids who are more her age and overall level of dance experience. You have to start somewhere though and she is very excited about her Irish Dance experience.
